Emma Stone in Versace & Giambattista Valli in Venice: gorgeous or twee?

wenn29459283

Here are some photos of Emma Stone at the Venice Film Festival on Wednesday. I’m including photos of Emma at the photocall and premiere for La La Land. The premiere dress is the sparkly silver Atelier Versace, and the photocall dress is the green and pink Giambattista Valli. The photocall pics came out early in the day on Wednesday, and I made the choice not to post them immediately because I thought the Valli dress was so unimpressive. While I’m always happy to see Emma doing the film festival circuit, that dress in particular did nothing for me. But the Versace? I love it. It’s so dramatic, especially for Emma (who doesn’t always do “drama!”).

Until I sat down to write this post, I had not watched the trailer for La La Land, the film starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, which premiered last night in Venice. I honestly hadn’t paid attention to what the film was about, I only knew it involved Gosling and Stone. Then I heard that it involved singing and I was like, “Nah, pass.” So I watched the trailer and…I still feel that way.

Don’t get me wrong, Emma and Ryan are beautiful and they seem to have so much chemistry together. But I’m probably still going to give this one a pass. Is it because I’m cynical? Is it because seeing two beautiful young people fall in love whilst singing doesn’t do much for me? Perhaps I am cynical. And Emma says that younger people (not me, then) should stop falling into the Cynicism Trap. Emma told the Daily Beast:

“What I would hope young people would take away from it is, I don’t know if you remember when Conan O’Brien left his show… but he made a speech at the end of it, and he said ‘to let go of cynicism’ and that ‘cynicism was the ugliest quality’ to him. And I think something about Damien [Chazelle, the director] and what Damien created, and the hopefulness and the joy and the beauty of this medium but also this story… this movie is in no way cynical. It’s about dreaming, and hoping, and working toward something to achieve something, and I think young people have fallen into a lot of cynicism, and making fun of things, and pointing out the flaws in everything, and this movie is anything but that. So it’s a huge joy to be a part of it and show it to young people. This is what I hope young people will do—work hard to achieve their dreams and hope, instead of be cynical.”

[From The Daily Beast]

Sure. I understand that, the plea for less negativity, less judgment, less cynicism, less jaded hopelessness. The thing that always happens with me is that I think I’m so jaded and over it, then a commercial will make me cry, or I’m genuinely moved by some inspirational news story. Or I’ll meet someone truly negative, and suddenly I become the most positive person ever (“I disagree, everything is awesome!”). But will all of that help me enjoy a movie that looks hella twee?

Don’t like the dress but I’m so excited for the movie. It’s already got the Oscar buzz after yesterday. Singing and dancing are things I love so I’m pumped for this movie

    • I’m at the Venice Film Festival and saw it yesterday – it’s AMAZING. The best movie I’ve seen in years and both Emma and Ryan are so, so good in it.

Gonna see “Light Between the Oceans” tonight, less excited for that one but mayeb it’ll surprise me.

      • a reader says:

I’m so jealous! I’ve been looking forward to this one. I adore Emma.

And she looks STUNNING in both dresses.

    • Bonzo says:

I used to loved musicals when I was younger so yeah, I’ll be seeing this as the feel-good movie among the horde of dark & depressing fare that we’re served up at Oscar time. It’ll be a nice change. Glad to hear it’s getting good reviews.

      Love the Versace dress!

  2. ell says:

i love the versace dress, which is unusual as i find versace super tacky usually. giambattista valli is a take or leave in my books. neither of these designers are my favourites.

btw, this movie looks so boring to me.

  3. Locke Lamora says:

As most Versace dresses, the premiere dress is very ugly. The Valli dress is lovely.

I fully embrace my cynicism. It makes living in this horrible world a lot easier. And when people like Conan O’Brien talk about not being cynical it just makes me roll my eyes.

    • GreenTurtle says:

Uh yeah, I like some of Conan’s humor, but he hardly shies away from being biting and cynical.

  4. Seraphina says:

I love Emma Stone. She just looks so happy and genuinely pleased to have gotten to the heights she has reached. And so her lack of fashion taste (in my opinion) are thrown out the window. Beautiful girl and lots of talent. She will go far.

And so now I can say I think looks aweful on her. She looks like a disco lamp. But if she likes and feel comfortable in it, go for it (although she could wear other things that would look great on her). Sigh

    • Locke Lamora says:

I love her too. She’s by far my favourite young Hollywood actress. And her fashion sense is usually great, I don’t know what happened with that Versace dresa.

    • Marny says:

I have to say, Seraphina, your response actually made me laugh- in a good way! Positive sentiment followed by negative sentiment followed by positive sentiment, and so on. It’s very cute 🙂

    • G says:

Pretty much this. Love Emma Stone, so even though I’m not big into musicals… I might consider watching this one. Also like her and Gosling together.

  5. lenje says:

I don’t dig either dress, but she looks very healthy! At least compared from the last time I saw her pics — months ago? Anyway, I like what I see of her.

    • a reader says:

She’s put on weight for the Billie Jean King bio-pic. I think she looks fabulous as well, because for a while there I felt she was looking overly slim (not shaming, just observing).

    • Hummus says:

Yes came here to say this! I love her as an actress but it did make me uncomfortable when she was super thin I couldn’t see past it, hopefully she keeps the weight on it really suits her

    • SKF says:

Yes, totally agree. She was scarily skinny for a while there. It was all I could see when I looked at her. And when stars are that skinny it freaks me out even more because the camera puts on weight, so they must be terrifyingly skinny in the flesh. She looks so much better now. I hope she stays like this.

Both dresses are hideous and unflattering but she’s such a great gal that I don’t care.

    • G says:

Yeah, she looks fantastic! She’s looked healthier for a while, though I didn’t know it was for the biopic. Now she looks toned and strong, so if she’s feeling good like this I hope she keeps it up. Back when she first made it big she also had a lovely, healthy look, so I don’t think that super-slim thing she had going was just her natural body type.

  6. Jellybean says:

Ouch!! I hate both dresses, although the silvery one could be one of those that looks stunning up close and in motion. I am not sure about the movie. Singing in the Rain is one one of my all time favourites, but I find Gosling a bit of a turn off. Still, if his high pitched voice is going to work anywhere I guess it is here. I have my fingers crossed that he will be going for silent but deadly in Blade Runner, it is the only way I can take him seriously as a hard man.

  7. Flamingo says:

    Something off about her face.

  8. Rocio says:

That Versace dress is fugly. I really like the Valli one. It’s good to have Emma back! She looks better than ever. Those tennis work out paid off.

  9. Tiffany27 says:

The Versace one is nagl, the Valli one is better.

  10. La Montagne says:

Hadn’t heard of the movie until I saw a commercial for it last night… I must say I do love Emma’s singing voice in the trailer, even though the movie doesn’t interest me.

  11. alice says:

let aside the dresses (wait until you see the awful silk negligee she wore to the after party) don’t miss the film.

“But will all of that help me enjoy a movie that looks hella twee?” this last sentence you wrote is basically why people, young, old, all ages, shouldn’t miss a movie that is nothing but old Hollywood magic with the leads of two attractive people, as it has always been. Beautifully shot, simple, movie magic dreaming.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I think people just don’t respond to Hollywood magic anymore, which I dont think is a bad thing. This movie doesnt seem interesting to me, and one of the reasons is that it looks so twee. But maybe Im wrong.

    • Mimz, says:

I agree. I will watch the movie because I do love a musical, a romantic movie that is all about love and more love, and love. I’m not super romantic, but I miss watching a movie that ignites my senses and makes me dream… And her voice sounds lovely.
It seems like a good novel/romance put on screen. And I’m looking forward to it.

  12. Ji-Yun says:

The heavy brows don’t suit her. She’s too delicately featured so they make her look cross.

  13. SM says:

I love the dress she wore to the photo call. The evening dress is alright too

  14. Ashley says:

I’m so excited for this movie! I saw Emma Stone in “Cabaret” and I was blown away. I’m also elated for Pasek and Paul, lyricist and composer, to have their names attached to the film. 2017 is going to be a good year for them. Everyone check out “Dear Evan Hansen” on Broadway!

    • Bex says:

Dear god, that show made me weep. I saw it last time I was in New York and it’s stayed with me ever since. Ben Platt was remarkable. I’m so glad Pasek and Paul are getting this type of recognition!

      • Ashley says:

Ben Platt should win the Tony. And I love Benj Pasek so much. I LIVE for his tweets. I think a Tony is in Pasek and Paul’s future…and maybe an Oscar!! 😀

  15. kri says:

Silver dress GORGEOUS. Second dress…call Tim Gunn. I can’t even think of a good insult, as the ugliness of that green and pink rag has addled my wits.

  16. Bex says:

I think I’d love her premiere dress if it weren’t for the neck tassel things. I’m so excited for the film! I adore musicals- good musicals, terrible musicals I can enjoy ironically, the lot- so that trailer is like catnip to me. I’m a bit wary of raising my expectations too much though.

  17. QQ says:

I cringe at musicals so Im a Hard Pass on the movie ( Plus it looks super… mmm lemme see how i’ll put this… Whitebread?Corny? Fantastic color palettes though) BUT she herself looks very very good in these pics, much needed weight back on, interesting dresses! Good on her

  18. NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Good god- the green, pink and tumeric combination is horrid. The 1970s Christmas tree tinsel dress is not good either, but not as bad as the street length dress.

Her hair & make up look great in the Versace.

    • Tough Cookie says:

see, I thought the turmeric shoes (PERFECT description of the color, by the way!!!) really punched up the otherwise just-okay dress.

      • SheDoneAlreadyHadHerses says:

Girl you read my mind! I was wracking my brain on the name of the color. Those shoes are freaking gorgeous.

  19. KBeth says:

I think she’s so beautiful but both dresses are unimpressive.

  20. Marianne says:

I can’t wait to see it. im hoping I can get tickets for it at TIFF.

  21. Penelope says:

    Love both dresses on her.

  22. saltandpepper says:

    Bloody gorgeous.
