Michael Fassbender & Alicia Vikander finally posed together in Venice

Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander have arrived in Venice to promote The Light Between Oceans, the film where they fell in love, on and off-screen. After more than a year and half of acting somewhat squirrelly about their relationship, they are sort of being forced to pose together to promote the film. To be fair, they don’t seem like they’re being “forced” – they both seem happy enough to pose together upon their arrival, just ahead of the photocall. The other dude in these photos is writer-director Derek Cianfrance. Alicia’s tie-dyed dress is by Prabal Gurung!

Fassbender and Vikander have been doing interviews ahead of the big Venice premiere tonight too. Entertainment Weekly has gotten a lot of exclusives, like this interview where they talked about how they don’t like to talk about how they’re together but they’ll talk about how they got together because of the movie, where they got together. EW also did this piece where Fassbender and Vikander talk separately about the other’s work. Fassbender talks about how Vikander makes unconventional choices for an actor. Hm…[opinion redacted].

Even though I loathed the source material (the book is awful), it seems like the film is getting decent reviews. Deadline called it an “engrossing drama” with “superb performances.”

I saw this movie a few weeks ago and was impressed. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

    • Rachel says:

I would like to see it. We don’t make it to the theater to see too many movies, but I’d make time for this one.

Off topic, but I love her sunglasses.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

I don’t think I could watch it. Any tear- jerkers about children just unravel me.
That said, it does look good.

She looks great ( though looks like she is still trying to maintain the “cool as a cucumber” thing regarding their pairing), love the dress (but not the clunky heels), and he looks openly happy with her- interesting as they have mostly been on the QT since the beginning of their relationship.

  2. lilacflowers says:

My great aunt is insistent that I take her to see this sometime this weekend. It had better be good. At least, I’ll have Fassy to stare at.

    • LadyMTL says:

My mom and my aunt have been making noises about us seeing it this weekend too. I have no real objections, it looks like a decent enough movie. (I didn’t read the book). And yes, staring at Fassy for a few hours is a nice bonus!

    • Sixer says:

      The book is truly terrible.

But actually, the kind of terrible book that you can see might make a half-decent film. It’s a shame they usually do it the other way around and butcher lovely books with trite, dire films.

I’m panicking about A Monster Calls – a lovely book about grief for kids, formulated and subsequently written by two of my favourite authors for young people. I’ll cry rivers of bitter tears if the film is sappy and awful and, in particular, sullies the late Siobhan Dowd in any way.

      • Luciana says:

I didn’t realize they were making A Monster Calls into a movie…yeesh. Not sure how I feel about that. The book was pretty much perfection IMO and I don’t know if any movie will come close.

      • Sixer says:

Yep. Liam Neeson is the monster. Sigourney Weaver is gran. Felicity Jones is mum.

I’m just praying it doesn’t go wrong

(BTW – The Savage by David Almond is along similar lines and just as good, if you’re interested, Luciana.)

    • trilby227 says:

My friend saw it at an early preview and she liked the movie. She said it made her husband cry, so bring tissues.

  3. Goats on the Roof says:

No opinion on their relationship, but her shoes! I want her shoes!

    • Agapanthus says:

Yes, I want the shoes too! I love her style, it’s so simple and natural looking. Plus, she has the most fabulous skin!! I would run around near naked if I had skin like that! 😂

  4. HH says:

They make a very cute couple. Not a full 10, because it’s Alicia and not me, but a solid 8. 😀

  5. Locke Lamora says:

She looks great, I love her bangs. He looks like he showered. Also a plus. They seem like a nice couple.
As for their official debut as a couple, either be private or not, but don’t drop hints like they did for the last year.

I like her much more than him, but really, how does she make unconventional choices for an actor?

  6. alice says:

I’m just glad somebody finally convinced Michael to whitening his teeth.

    • ell says:

      lmao, best comment

    • QQ says:

As Much as I was ready to say “COME THRU WHITESTRIPS!” I think his Shark Teeth are just being backlit? like the actual light is helping

Also : That dress is HIDEOUS: Is like it wanted to be a Caftan and also a Hippie dress and also something from the Ross Dress for Less “Dress event” racks

    • Jae says:

Yay to succumbing to pressure of unrealistic and ultimately unhealthy beauty standards

  7. Margo S. says:

She kind of looks pissed in these pics with fassbender…

  8. GingerCrunch says:

Glad to hear some good buzz on this. Looks right up my alley! Just saw ‘Steve Jobs’ and was mesmerized by his performance. Ok, and him! Yum.

  9. B2C says:

Oh my he is stunning. I could look at him all day

  10. Mia4S says:

He’s apparently finally taking a vacation after filming non-stop for several years. Looks good on him!

  11. SM says:

she looks lovely, the dress, the hair. The shoes however ruined it for me.
Regarding the movie, it looks like a very emotional and dramatic story, I want to see it but yet I am reluctant. Raising a small child turned me into an emotional wreck, I can not deal with stories about lost or hurt children at the moment.

  12. Kate says:

He talked about their relationship a little on TODAY this morning

  13. ell says:

this dress + shoes look super comfy. i hate the bangs though, no one ever looks good with bangs.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I’m the opposite. I think 90% of people look better with bangs. Sadly, I’m not one of them.

    • D says:

I think most women look younger with bangs

      • SM says:

I’m considering either bangs or a claire underwood haircut at the moment. The thing stopping me is the fact that most people seem to hate bangs. For what it’s worth I think she looks good with the bangs

      • D says:

@SM It doesn’t matter what most people think, it only matters what you think – it’s your hair 🙂 If you want bangs, go for it! (Although the Claire Underwood haircut looks really good too)

    • GingerCrunch says:

You should see me without bangs! EEK!!

  14. tracking says:

Normally her style is too twee for me, but she looks stylish, sexy, and effortless here. Love it and yeah, her +1 ain’t too shabby.

  15. Rocio says:

They really look good together. I love her dress.

  16. Cee says:

I want her dress, shoes and sun glasses. And her boyfriend.

  17. CornyBlue says:

I heard this movie as a whole is not very good though it features solid performances by Alicia Vikander , Fasbender and Rachel Weisz. Hope she atleast manages a back to back nomination and Weisz is back with a bang.

  18. Bonzo says:

    I like them together.
    I want her sunglasses.
    I love her bangs.
    Hate the shoes.
    He’s looking good and rested.
Not sure I’ll see a tearjerker, even if the performances are great. I’ll have to be in the mood.

  19. Patty says:

LOL. I was just going to say I love the dress and the sunglasses but I hate the shoes. I’ll admit it I kind of like them as a couple.

  20. SKF says:

Hmmm… I’m sure the performances are great but I highly doubt any of the three main actors can do a decent Australian accent. It’s one of the hardest accents to pull off and the list of actors who’ve managed to do it is very short. Kate Winslet sits at the top of the list.

    • Bex says:

Judging by the trailers, they didn’t even try! Is it supposed to be set in Australia, or have they just moved it to a non-specified place? I spent a lot of my childhood there and it’s so so painful to me when actors try to put the accent on. Winslet gets kudos for pulling it off twice (with regional variations!). Dev Patel’s in the new Lion trailer sounds decent. Anybody else, no.

  21. Abigail says:

    Gorgeous, beautiful couple.

  22. Cat87 says:

I like the dress just can’t with those shoes. I am just disappointed Fassbender is now being more open about Vikander, cause the movie. I still feel they are awkward about doing premiers together. The whole private couple thing is BS but the story behind their coupling is actually very sweet. the director had both of them write love letters to each other like the couple in the movie. true hipster romance write actually letters to each other instead of instagraming. it’s very sweet story and would change people’s perspective of how they came to be.

  23. Moon says:

Shame the promos aren’t featuring Rachel Weisz more

  24. spidey says:

Prefer his smile to his shark grin.

  25. Linna says:

The reviews are quite terrible. I haven’t seen it yet but looking at the trailers there’s so much crying and overacting going on, doesn’t look good. Especially miss Vikander, is there a film where she doesn’t overdo emotional tools? Quite frankly, I’m fed up with this acting style. A bit of subtlety would make her a better actor… More looking forward to see Weisz, I adore her since The Deep blue sea..

    • Abigail says:

Not anymore. There are some really good reviews now.

      • Corey says:

Really? I don’t think so. Critics and audience alike – It’s bouncing back and forth from 62% to 58%… Quite sad knowing you work a character so much but it doesn’t pay off.

    • S. says:

The reviews are mixed. Vikander os being praised by everyone. Her performance in EX Machina is very subtle, and this role is deeply emotional. It doesn’t require subtlety.

      • Corey says:

@s. – Hahaa, what reviews have you been reading, dude? Everybody complains about the over the top never ending weeping. Gee…

  26. perplexed says:

With sunglasses on, he could probably pass somewhat for Prince Harry (an older version).

I don’t think they look bad together, but for some reason he always strikes me as much wilder than her. But I have no proof to base that perception on. She always looks reserved and lady-like, and he looks like he could be flirting up a storm somewhere.

    • Corey says:

Lady-like for the red carpet. Judging by her friends’ party pics she likes to drink and party…

  27. Andrea says:

We read this in bookclub and everyone loved it except for one person. I just loaned this book to my best friend who is a guy and he loved it also. I am not sure why everyone hated it. is it because they take another woman’s baby? because Izzy is off her rocker? The one woman in our bookclub who disliked it couldn’t handle the couple pretending the child is there—but this can happen sometimes. I am excited to see the film but one friend stated that it isn’t as good as the book(she saw an early preview of it).

  28. WyoGirl says:

    Where’s Rachel?

  29. vv007 says:

I actually think together she makes him look rough and his age is definitely showing. If anything she looks even better next to him! Like the dress, hate the shoes.
