Advertisers still don’t want to have anything to do with the Duggar Family

duggar

A few days ago, I clicked on (and read) this story about Jinger Duggar and her “sex plans.” I wish I had not even looked, because the story made my eye twitch. It was all about wide-eyed innocence and front hugs and “fast tracking” a wedding so Jinger and her shady fiancé can bone with daddy’s blessing. I’m not joking. The story actually read as just a recap of the latest episode of Counting On, the spinoff of 19 Kids & Counting. 19 Kids & Counting was canceled last year in the wake of Josh Duggar’s creepy-molester-pervert scandal. The show HAD to be canceled because TLC lost advertisers across the board because of Josh Duggar. But TLC was still in bed with the Duggars, so they came up with the idea of Counting On, which was supposed to focus on the younger Duggar women/girls, mostly Jessa and Jill, aka the likeable and sympathetic Duggars. But Counting On has just turned into a rebranded 19 Kids & Counting, and advertisers still don’t want any part of it.

As In Touch previously reported, more than a dozen advertisers who made a large buy on cable television that spanned several networks balked when their ads ran during season one of Jill & Jessa: Counting On due to Josh Duggar’s scandals. And now, four more companies have issued statements saying they were surprised to learn their spots aired during the season two premiere of Counting On. Many are pulling their ads:

• GERBER LIFE: “The Gerber Life ad was inadvertently shown during the premiere of Counting On. We have been assured that Gerber Life ads will no longer be shown during this program.”

• TRIVAGO: “We did not have control over when the advertisement ran, as it was a direct response buy. We did not purposely intend to advertise during any specific TLC program.”

• THUMBTACK.COM: “At this time, we are not buying TV ad space for particular programming or programs, rather for networks or groups of networks in aggregate. Your question [about whether it was the company’s intention to air during Counting On] however has opened a discussion internally on this topic.”

• HOTWIRE: “Hotwire’s ads appear on many cable networks including AMC, Bravo, HGTV, TNT, TBS, USA as well as TLC Network. While we are able to select which cable networks air our ads, we do not select the specific shows. After further consideration we have decided to remove this network from our plan.”

Now, with so many companies pulling their ads off the show, TLC is left to air promos for other TLC programs instead of paid ads.

[From In Touch Weekly]

Hotwire, Gerber and Trivago are some of my favorite peeps now! I love that corporations still don’t want to have anything to do with the Duggars, even though Josh Duggar is in the wind. Creepy Jim-Bob and Michelle still make a lot of appearances on Counting On, and the show still pushes the Duggar lifestyle. I also wonder about the ratings – by most accounts, Counting On is highly-rated for a cable-reality show, but the ratings are still not as good as they were before everybody learned the truth about Josh and the family. So here’s my question: why is TLC still trying to make the Duggars happen? And why is People Magazine still trying it too? The Duggars run to People with all of their exclusives these days, but if I was an editor for People, at some point I would just say “no thanks.”

    One word: GOOD.

    • Santia says:

Yes! Between People and TLC still shoving them down people’s throats, I’m glad they’re not getting advertisers.

    • Sabrine says:

Good and hope it stays that way. It’s unfortunate some of them are still getting t.v. gigs though.

  2. Why? Because creepy freak shows are cool so long as they don’t happen to you and you can profit from it.

    Seriously.

Sometimes I think without laws there’d be a lot of ‘reality TV shows’ that would go way past the realm of common human decency.

You don’t find discretion in the eyes of a TV producer or magazine editor.

  3. Zuzus Girl says:

Good on the corporations. Who watches this oppressive, misogynistic crap? I come from a strict Catholic background but almost everyone in the family believes the way most people do; pro-choice, gay rights, civil rights. I don’t know anyone (even staunch Republicans) who back up these asswipes. And those ‘girls’ are cloying as hell. Stand up yourselves dammit!

    • Algernon says:

There are a lot of people who think they’re promoting good old fashioned family values (I know because these people are in my familiy), but now that the daughters are getting married so young, and with no education to speak of, people are starting to question it. Like my mom, who used to love this show said, who doesn’t want their daughter to be independent and capable of taking care of herself? Weirdos.

  4. Patricia says:

Yes, good! I was actually just thinking about how they would have the children’s doors locked at night so the sons wouldn’t come abuse the daughters. So despicable.

  5. Chetta B. says:

    Proper thing.

  6. Trixie says:

I read that Us mag article and Jinger sounds like a 14 year old with her first boyfriend, not like an adult ready for marriage. She really just wants to get married so she can have sex.

  7. Lolalulu says:

I kept reading “Jinger” as “Jingle” bc my brain can’t seem to process that ridiculous spelling. Petty points aside, it terrifies me that the Duggars still have an audience. And worse, I can’t imagine that all of their viewers hold such extreme far-right, militant Christian beliefs…which means it’s a lot of middle-of-the-road people who find them quirky, but harmless.

    • Lady D says:

Susan Smith, who drowned her five boys, and her husband were thought to be members of the Quiverfull society. He was planning on becoming leader of their local cult.
I feel so sorry for her and her late children. Such a tragedy.

      • Esmom says:

I think you mean Andrea Yates, not Susan Smith. My heart has always gone out to Ms Yates, she was clearly struggling tremendously for a long time and her worthless husband not only didn’t help her, he exacerbated her condition. Imo.

Susan Smith, on the other hand, never had my sympathy

      • Lady D says:

You’re right Esmon. It was Andrea Yates, not Susan Smith. SS drowned her two boys in their car seats. God what a horrific death. If I remember correctly she then blamed a ‘black man’ for kidnapping her boys. Foul and despicable woman.

      • Betsy says:

I still feel for Andrea Yates. That poor woman. Her poor babies. And her idiot ex-husband who was more responsible for those five dead children than she ever could have been.

      • qwerty says:

Ugh. Her failure of a husband was supposed to be looking out for her, given she was not doing well mentally and was in no position to make decisions about having another kid. Instead, he just did what all fundie crazies do and treated her as a walking incubator whose potential children are more important than her health, or life for that matter.

  8. Astrid says:

    good

  9. JudyK says:

The entire family is in the business of making babies for profit. They turn my stomach. All of them. With a few exceptions, TLC is nothing but trash television.

Glad to hear the sponsors want nothing to do with the Duggars. Wise move.

  10. Minnieder says:

    Go away Duggars

  11. cindy says:

Josh Duggar face not got on any mornoning. No.

  12. Vaya says:

TLC use to stand for The Learning Channel. WTF happened? I don’t know anybody who wants to learn this crap. I don’t watch the channel at all at this point.

    • Izzy says:

Right? The channel no longer teaches anything of value; we literally learn nothing by watching it. History Channel too – I finally saw one episode of Ancient Aliens, and I can honestly say I am dumber for it.

    • Sunshine Gold says:

To be fair, the last time it was anything close to “The Learning Channel” was the late 90s. At some point you have to move on and realize it’s an entertainment channel, just like the rest of them.

  13. justme says:

then why are they still on TV?

    • tealily says:

Exactly. They had a great opportunity to distance themselves from these fools, but they just keep pushing it! Ughhhh.

      • Ican't says:

They keep pushing it because people keep watching it. The special they did after the scandal was a test to see if people would tune in and they did, that’s why we got the new show.

  14. grabbyhands says:

I expect this will last as long as the spin off shows aren’t quite as popular as the original. If it ever shows signs of matching it, advertisers will flock back and I’m pretty sure that’s what TLC is counting on or they wouldn’t have green lighted Counting On. I also think there was probably evidence that they were a lot more culpable in covering up for Josh Duggar and keeping them on the air in one form or another is how they keep it from coming to light.

    • yuck says:

And good ole’ Jim Bob has made sure there will be plenty of action this season—a hastily arranged courtship/wedding, another baby (maybe two!), “missionaries” returning from the mission “field” (lol), constant hints about more courtships in the offing, etc. If that doesn’t get them more eyeballs, then TLC will know it’s really over. Jim Bob claims to believe his TV audience is his mission field, but he understands that without anything happening, God’s word alone is not enough. So he makes things happen, the tried and true “reality” formula. In other words—it’s all fake.

  15. Insomniac says:

That’s disappointing about the ratings, though — as long as networks think there’s still an audience to watch families of bottom-feeders who exploit their kids for ratings, the next bunch of Duggars will be right around the corner. I want stuff like this to become so radioactive that nobody will look at it.

    • Lady D says:

Well, if pedophilia doesn’t get them removed from TV, it’s likely nothing will.
They are going to have to come up with some form of controversy to keep viewers attention, like a moral crisis that their religion can solve. I wonder if their religion covers one daughter coveting another daughter’s husband, or vice versa? How far will TLC push this family for profit?

    • Secret says:

I wonder the same thing about ratings. Who is watching this? People who don’t really read tabloids or watch much news? People who just take things at face value? Or do people hate watch this and then go comment on websites about how stupid and fake the family is?

  16. ria says:

I often read here on celebitchy about this family but since i am not american i never understood why they had a lot of fans.

When i read here that people watching hyper religious families living a life full of Restriktions, i just don’t understand what might be so interessting about them.
I read about them here because they always had so many comments and i thought at first i just confused about the reaction to them because i am from another country.

  17. Linda says:

Pretty well all of TLC’s programs have become ridiculous. I refuse to watch it anymore.

  18. velourazure says:

TLC is the bottom of the barrel, they make me sick. They are the modern day carnival freak show, searching for whatever sad person or condition they can broadcast to gawking, laughing viewers. In addition to corporate boycotts, humanity needs to vote with their remote controls and turn that channel off.

  19. Maum says:

Would love it if Jinger got married, went on the pill and had no babies for at least 10 years.

  20. Elizabeth says:

Besides commercials for various forms of birth control, alcohol, and dating sites, I think they should have PSAs every episode about gay rights, racism, women’s lib, the benefits of an education, etc.

  21. Nic919 says:

The parents should be jailed for exposing their kids to a molester. The entire family and their famewhore ways need to go away. Forever.

  22. Margo S. says:

    Ewww ewww gag barf ewww.

  23. Sparkly says:

I’m sure I’m projecting what I wish would happen, but Jinger seems to have some pretty intense “Help Me” face going on in that pic. I wish all those young ladies would be empowered to walk away.

  24. Donna miller says:

I will never watch that show!they should be done with
    It.

  25. Brittany says:

I do Love the Duggars but us as PPL should they Expolided their Family for Thoughtof Dolllards

  26. Pandy says:

These people are like bed bugs – difficult to get rid of! Bloated ticks feeding off the public carcass. The fact that they don’t let their spawn watch tv but they can “make” tv is quite the double talk.

  27. qwerty says:

(the US Weekly article) ” Joseph reiterated that the brothers would all have their eyes on Jeremy until he and Jinger walked down the aisle because the male siblings were “not going to just hand over” their sister to anybody. ”
