Amy Adams tried to do some Duggar-esque hairstyle in Venice, right?

FFN_MASS_ArrivalPrem_090116_52161521

Here are some photos of Amy Adams and Jenner Renner at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday. They both arrived several days back, and I guess they’ve been doing press and having fun ahead of last night’s premiere of Arrival. I’m including photos from the photocall (Amy in the blue and green Fendi dress) and the premiere (the black gown). You guys know I love Amy and I think she’s crazy-talented and beautiful, right? Right. But her premiere hair is not good. It’s, like, Duggar hair. Why did her hairstylist give her Duggar hair?

There are a lot of films going through the film festival circuit this fall, and many of them hope to have “Oscar buzz.” Maybe I’ve just been doing this job too long (or just long enough), but I’ve started to see through some of the more obvious over-hyped campaigns. Too often, a film will come out of Cannes or Venice and there will be so much Oscar hype, but by the time November rolls around, everyone has forgotten about it. For what it’s worth, I don’t think that’s going to happen with Arrival. There’s a lot of hype around Arrival, the sci-fi We Are Not Alone alien-drama starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. Renner plays second-fiddle to Amy’s lead character, and while I’m still iffy about whether the film will be majorly Oscar-buzzy, I absolutely think Amy’s performance will probably be recognized. The feeling I’m getting is that this film will wage an Oscar campaign not unlike last year’s campaign for The Martian.

Last thing: Margot Kidder played Lois Lane in the Christopher Reeves-starring Superman movies, and Kidder is apparently not a fan of the new Superman-Batman movies. She especially hates what they did with the updated Lois, played by Amy Adams. Kidder said: “They took one of the best American actresses’ around, Amy Adams, and didn’t give her anything to do! I mean, how stupid is that? They made her what used to be the girlfriend, which kind of ended in the 60s with women’s rights.” The headline being generated from this quote is “Margot Kidder says Amy Adams’ Lois Lane is stupid.” That’s not what she’s saying.

I’m too distracted by Jenner Renner’s ugliness.

    • Jellybean says:

Then I am sure you are delighted that they didn’t include any of the many photographs of these two being extravagantly affectionate with each other. Amy wanted Renner to support her in this film, she got him and she is making it very clear she loves him, ugly or not.

    • Flamingo says:

@Jellybean I saw the photos and thought she looked like she didn’t want him anywhere near her.

      • Jellybean says:

Look again, watch the videos and listen to the interviews. They are good friends and have been for years, but especially since American Hustle. I think there is good chance they will be working together again soon with something music based. They were lined up for a Janis Joplin biopic, but I think time caught up with Amy on that one, despite how wonderful she looks,

      • Flamingo says:

@Jellybean He got paid more than her for American Hustle, right?

      • Jellybean says:

@Flamingo Something Amy says she was aware of when she signed the contract. Clearly it didn’t impact on their relationship.

      • Kathleen says:

I think Amy is one of those people that sees the best in people. And I think Renner is probably on his best behavior around her. He seems to genuinely adore Amy. I don’t care for Renner nor think he’s that attractive but I’m glad he is at least smart enough to realize that she’s a valuable, wonderful person worth hitching your cart to.

@Kate, I think Adams just genuinely adores Henry Cavill and he adores her. It’s one of the reasons I tend to cut Cavill some slack as a person because if Adams thinks he’s that great then he can’t be all that bad.

      • Jellybean says:

@Kathleen, I think having Amy’s regard is a good character reference too. I am not so sure he is hitching his cart to her though. In a recent interview she said they had been friends for 15 years or so, that is a long time to be on your best behavior.

    • ladysussex says:

Me too! Amy looks lovely, but I find Renner repugnant.

    • Flamingo says:

      **Jeremy. I just noticed, LOL!

    • WoManatee says:

      Jellybean isn’t biased at all…lol!

I’m sure they are friends, but in the pic of them where Amy is in the black dress it looks like she’s trying to pry his creepy a** off her.

    • ell says:

      hahahaha, very true.

    • Sabrine says:

She looks cute with her vintage hairstyle and the blue dress is very flattering on her. Her hair is not like the Duggar’s at all. For one thing it’s perfectly straight, no curls in sight.

  2. edith says:

didnt know that having straight hair and a middle part is considered “Duggar-Hair” now…

    • Goats on the Roof says:

Yeah, this isn’t really ‘Duggar’ hair to me. When I think of the Duggars, I think of the crispy-curly hair with straight bangs all the girls used to have that the mom still wears to this day. I think Amy’s hair looks too long and the center parting isn’t the most flattering, but this is a pretty standard look.

      • lucy2 says:

Yeah to me long does not equal Duggar, unless it has the fake curls and crispy bangs.

      • Evil Queen says:

Me too. This is Marcia Brady hair. When I think of the Duggars I think of that horrible 80s poodle butt curl on the forehead.

    • manta says:

I thought the same. Tha’ts straight long hair with a center part. Didn’t realize that some reality Tv personalities cornered this specific hairdo.

    • amanda says:

This looks more like Gwyneth Paltrow hair.

  3. Margo S. says:

How is having your hair down and straight Duggar hair? That’s how plenty of people wear their hair all the time. That’s how my hair looks all the time since I was a child and I’ve never considered it to be like those people.

  4. Miss Jupitero says:

Would sugar hair involve a cheap at home perm and wierdspli bangs?

  5. Mgsota says:

I can’t think of one Duggar who wears their hair straight with a center part. Anywho, Amy looks pretty.

    • KB says:

Yeah, none of them do. The only similarity I see is the length. Several of them keep (or used to keep) their hair several inches too long.

  6. Jellybean says:

I think Amy will get a major studio push for this. Her reviews are great and the film is totally focused on her character. I love that she is centre stage. One of the things that annoyed me most about American Hustle is that she should have been given that stage then, but they had to bring in Jennifer Lawrence in a flashy but totally superfluous role. To me it threw out the whole story and made the hot younger actress the centre of attention, yet again.

  7. Arock says:

Duggar hair involves white rain mouse and a spiral perm- Maybe a little bump-it and aerosol, curling iron bangs- a la Jesse Spano.
Amy looks fine. Couple that with the fact that Jeremy renner looks like a crusty pug and she’s killing it.

  8. ichsi says:

I looooove the black dress! She really is one of the best so I’m glad to see she’s leading this one!

  9. Neelyo says:

More like she’s doing Nicole Kidman drag.

    • Kathleen says:

@Neelyo, she can’t help it if she resembles Nicole Kidman. I’ve always thought she looks way more like Kidman than Isla Fischer even though I know it’s popular for people to confuse Isla and Amy. It’s just that Kidman destroyed her face and Adams has, at least for now, continued to age gracefully and embrace the natural. I pray she stays that way.

  10. Redgrl says:

Love her body language – “ugh, can’t believe I have to stand next to this idiot!”

    • Jellybean says:

Photos can be misleading, look at the other photos from the event.
If you don’t believe me, listen to Amy who thinks he is a “wonderful and compassionate human being”.

      • ell says:

your stanning for renner in every comment is showing, jellybean.

      • Jellybean says:

Just pushing against the prevailing view, especially when it becomes vitriolic. I love to do that. It doesn’t change the fact that Amy clearly states what she thinks of Renner in that video and others are using a few pictures to infer something that suits them better. This is the start of a long press tour and probably awards season, so I am sure if I am wrong it will come out in the end.

      • Kathleen says:

@Jellybean, I don’t stan for Renner at all. I don’t really like him or think he’s good looking. But I do think Adams genuinely likes him. I think she sees the best in people and it’s also possible that men find they bring their best selves when they are with her. I dont’ think it’s a put on. I think she likes him. For what it’s worth.

      • Kitten says:

        I actually appreciate *The Dissenter*
        And I hate Renner.

    • Jellybean says:

      @Kitten. Fair enough.

  11. lilacflowers says:

One of her better red carpet looks, actually. Amy is a very pretty woman but her red carpet style often lacks something. She looks good in that black dress.

    • Keats says:

I haaaaaate that front zipper and what it’s doing to her torso and chest. Love the colors, skirt, hair, makeup, everything but that zipper!

(obviously this was a comment on the blue zipper front dress, oops! The black one is quite good)

  12. Green Is Good says:

I adore Amy’s blue and green trimmed, tea-length dress. And she looks lovely in it.

Margot Kidder isn’t wrong. Lois has been regulated to plucky girlfriend status, but the movie IS called Batman vs. Superman, so there you go.

“Duggar hair”? The hell are you talking about CB?

    • Kathleen says:

@GreenisGood, the fact that the movie is “Batman v. Superman” though is kind of part of the complaint, I would imagine. Margot Kidder was the true second lead of her Superman franchise with Reeve. She was cut out of Superman 3 only because she was protective of Richard Donner and the studio punished her for it. Teri Hatcher was the true lead of “Lois and Clark” in the 90’s–her name came first. Lois Lane isn’t supposed to just be a supporting role in an ensemble flick. Yeah, that happens to a lot of love interests but that’s not Lois. She debuted in Action #1 with Superman in 1938 and it’s equally her story. Lois Lane has her own YA novels. This franchise :should:: have been a true Superman franchise from the start with actual focus on HER story and instead it became a greedy vehicle for WB to start their own Justice League. I imagine part of Margot’s complaint is that Lois should never just be a character on the side. She’s supposed to be driving half of the story but WB has made that basically impossible now. (Though I do think Kidder would be happier if she watched the Utlimate edition of the movie because Lois had a ton of great stuff there.)

  13. lucy2 says:

I love her and will watch her in anything, and this looks GOOD. I’m excited for it, apparently it’s based on a book that was excellent. I love that the lead of an alien invasion movie is a woman for a change.
I don’t like Renner off screen, but I do think he is a good actor.
Margot was not wrong about the current Lois Lane role. It’s a waste of Amy’s time and talents, but good for her for getting some comic book movie money, I guess, and at least the role isn’t played by some 20 year old.

    • Kathleen says:

Did you see the ultimate edition of Batman vs. Superman? Because Lois is AMAZING in it. AS is Clark to be honest. The most infuriating thing to me when I watched it is that….whoever edited this movie for WB completely ruined the film through the editing choices. Lois’s entire investigation was cut and it’s so, so important to the movie! She gets to the bottom of everything BEFORE either of the men. It also shows Clark reporting in the poor neighborhoods of Gotham and taking a stand against discrimination of poor people in the press. It was just heartbreaking because I couldn’t believe these things were cut.
I so desperately wanted Amy Adams and Cavill to get to play a REAL Superman franchise with more focus on romance and sunlight and journalism. Instead we got…this. But I’m still happy she’s in the role.

    • Kitten says:

Agree with you about Renner–terrible person, solid actor though.
Love Amy Adams and her hair is GORGEOUS so not sure why she’s getting slammed…

  14. Kait says:

I thought it looked more like Goop hair – straight, middle part, not interesting at all, doesn’t fit with the event or dress

  15. SusanneToo says:

It’s Julie Barnes hair. Or, actually, my hair.

  16. moon says:

That last dress looks fug and cheap. I adore Amy as an actress, but she’s not a fashion girl.

  17. HeidiM says:

Is his jacket made of Sweat shirt material? Serious question.

  18. Grant says:

I think her hair looks great…?

  19. deevia says:

    Morticia Addams hair?

  20. Kathleen says:

One, I think she looks stunningly beautiful here. She looks like Nicole Kidman to me circa Batman Forever. I can’t be the only one who thinks she has taken on a Kidman vibe before all the plastic surgery. Two, she’s getting rave reviews for Nocturnal Animals ANd Arrival. So…wow. Good for you, lady. You get that.

Three, I loathe Jeremy Renner but she ALMOST makes him cute and charming. In a strange way, I almost feel like she they could maybe make a cute couple if he ever got his act together. But, I will also say….I think most of her male co-stars adore her. Ben Affleck was fawning over her beauty in American Hustle during that British interview where you go sit on the couch and drink and he was gushing over her when she gave him the humanitarian award. Christian Bale supposedly adores her and she’s admitted that he was “very protective” of her during the whole thing with DOR. And Henry Cavill has some really lovely quotes about her where he’s going on about how she “amazes” him and “surprises him every day.” And I remember Patrick Dempsey was crazy about her when they made Enchanted. I think a lot of her male co-stars just really adore her. She’s probably just a really nice person to work with.

Four, ok…I adore Margot Kidder and I’m not thrilled with a lot of stuff in Batman v. Superman but I do have to say….if you’ve seen the Ultimate Edition vs. the theatrical edition…Lois’s part was kind of AMAZING in it. She was a better detective than freaking Batman. The biggest issue I have with Lois in Bvs is that they cut all her good scenes and it really was toxic for the movie. And, I’m just mad that instead of letting Adams be her beautiful screwball comedy self as Lois LAne they stuck her in a movie where Batman was the focus. But I still kind of love her as Lois.

  21. Robin says:

That’s not Duggar hair. The top of the blue dress looks like a wetsuit.

  22. Abbess Tansy says:

I love both her hair and the clothes. She looks great and I just adore Amy.

  23. artnoosa says:

I like Amy so much and can not wait for this movie. I’ am a sucker for SFi. Yay

  24. Fiorella says:

I like this hairstyle , even on gwyneth it’s ok . Amy looks pretty

  25. Hannah says:

So confused by the “Duggar-hair” remark. I see that I’m not the only one. Pretty sure long and straight with a middle part pre-dates the Duggars…

  26. Sunshine Gold says:

She looks fantastic hair and all and the blue dress with Louboutins is great.

  27. Veronica says:

I love the dramatic music for what is clearly a nerdy AF scifi film. I do really like the non-anthropomorphic design of the aliens, though. That alone might be worth the viewing.

  28. Marianne says:

That isnt dugger hair, if it was it would be poofy on top with crunchy curls.

    Its just straightened….
