Kate Upton: ‘L.A.—how do I know who’s who? You all look like sisters’

upton cover

Kate Upton is one of three cover ladies for the October issue of Glamour. Joan Smalls and Emily Ratajkowski also got separate covers, and I’ll be covering those stories separately (or maybe not in Smalls’ case, just because her interview is pretty boring). Anyway, Upton is back to modeling after a brief hiatus where she tried to become a movie star, to somewhat mixed results. I mean, she got chances but Hollywood was just sort of *shrug*. So she re-signed with a modeling agency and I’m guessing she’s refocusing on getting modeling work. In any case, I didn’t hate her interview at all. She talks about body image, the modeling industry and how it’s good to be different.

Did she always want to model? “I knew nothing about fashion growing up, because in Florida you just wear bikinis and flip-flops. But kids can be cruel, and they used to make fun of me for having long legs and bushy eyebrows. My mom would flip through magazines and say, “Look, all these models have that too.” I decided I wanted to be a model.”

Whether she was ever told to lose weight: “All. The. Time. At first I tried to diet to become their image, but eventually I realized that it wasn’t realistic—that this is just the shape of my body. So I had to block them out. I think that the people who are the loudest about wanting to change you are the people with the least amount of vision and creativity.

Her confidence: “Where I grew up, it was considered a great thing to have a curvy body to fill out a bathing suit. For that to be a negative was so confusing to me. And besides, when I started working, I was booked constantly, mostly for catalog work. So when people were saying, “Oh, she doesn’t have the right look for a model,” I thought, Then why am I working every single day? There are so many different directions you can take in the modeling industry, so many ways to be successful.

Her breakthrough year in 2013: “That was a really cool moment. The fact that people were having a conversation about whether I should conform to fashion or not gave me a great platform, because I wanted to show that you shouldn’t conform, you should be the best you, the healthiest you. You shouldn’t always try to change yourself, because then how are we going to tell anybody apart? It’s like L.A.—how do I know who’s who? You all look like sisters.”

Whether negative comments affect her: “In the beginning it was so hurtful. But I have to say, the other day I was reading some negative comments, and I was thinking they were really funny. So I guess they don’t anymore.”

Inspirations: “I love what I do—I love fashion. Whatever you wear, it really sets the tone for the day. If I’m in sweatpants, I fully become that person—I’m lazy and kind of a mess. The opposite is also true; fashion can give you confidence. And things have definitely changed in the industry, mostly for the positive. We’re more accepting now. For me, someone like Ashley Graham, who loves her body and is always talking about it, is inspiring.

What’s weird is that I remember the rise of Kate Upton and how truly pearl-clutchy people were about what Upton meant for modeling. Yes, she’s blonde, “wholesome-looking” with big boobs, but people really freaked out because she had hips and she didn’t look like a standard size-zero model. She became a de facto spokeswoman for “curvy models” even though, looking back on it now, she really wasn’t that much bigger than regular models. And I do think Upton opened up the door for someone like Ashley Graham, and for a larger conversation about body diversity in fashion/modeling.

She has Hips??! If Anything That is Decidedly an area she doesnt have, she would be straight up and down if she didn’t have the ginormous #waterboobs ( Don’t @ me just Looks at her forge of empires or whatever that commercial for a game was, is Incredibly distracting?!?! LOL)

    • Penny&Pinky says:

@QQ , I was thinking the same thing. She has big boobs but she doesn’t have the hourglass figure

      • QQ says:

Right, I mean even in the pics in this post she is clearly doing the Side and Toot Pose that the slim/small hipped gals do for the ‘Gram to emulate “curves” she is just naturally big boobed which basically means sample sizes wont do past that point, Reminds me a LOT of Toccara’s Body All boobs and not much else( Holla Terribly Problematic ANTM watchers!!)

      • Yup says:

Toccara! I loved her and also Yaya. Aww ANTM. “WE WERE ROOTING FOR YOU!” Thanks for the memories.

Also, re- Kate Upton- Thank you for saying it so I didn’t have to.

    • tegteg says:

haha it’s true, she has a cylinder body shape. no hips, just tig o bitties.

      • AG-UK says:

She has the body that is made for Levis 501’s waist/hips almost the same. In High School I would kill to wear Levi’s but sadly that’s NOT me.

    • Embee says:

Sincere question: what do people mean by “having hips”? Because I thought she flared out from navel to hips, which is what I thought having hips meant. She doesn’t have much in the back, for sure.

    • Angel says:

Thank you! She is beautiful but does not have curves..except boobs.

    • Amanda G says:

I agree, folks are infatuated with her breasts and don’t even notice how tiny the rest of her is. She has a lovely figure, but she’s not “curvy” or plus sized or voluptuous, etc.

  2. Tiffany says:

Whoever did the makeup for this shoot did a great job. The minimum look really works. Kudos.

  3. Castor & Pollux says:

    Edit

  4. Pri says:

She looks amazing. They always go cray with her lashes, to turn her into Marilyn. Not here. Well done.

  5. Yolanda says:

I never understood how Upton could be labelled as curvy. She has big boobs but absolutely no hips or waist. She is a beautiful woman but by no definition is she curvy!

  6. Erinn says:

“I think that the people who are the loudest about wanting to change you are the people with the least amount of vision and creativity.”

I agree with that for the most part. If a brand or photographer, or whatever wants you – they should be able to make something just as amazing with you as you are rather than expecting you to be the same way as all the other people they have shot. If they need to do the same thing every time with the same ‘style’ of person – then just how inventive are they?

  7. Jegede says:

Kate Upton already joined a select group when covered SI 3 times consecutively.
Her three peat put her in the company sahred only with Elle Macpherson and Christie Brinkely. Fact
She’s also one of the few SI models that has gone to the other fashion spectrum with HB covers, Vanity Fair covers, several Vogue editions (including the big ones UK, USA, Italy).

The snobbishness of how she was not a deserving model of this attention according to ‘online fashion connesieurs’ was eye roll inducing. Meanwhile several dead eyed beanpoles that look like girls you would find in the Metro at 3am sniffing for undesirables were praised as being ‘edgy’, ‘non basic’ and ‘deserving’ (??) of Vogue covers.

I dunno if time has left Upton behind, what with the new generation of Insta models, but here’s to her trying to get back up there.

    • Erinn says:

I think she’s more marketable than talented. Not to say she doesn’t have any talent or anything – but she was EVERYWHERE for a while. And I think largely because companies knew she’d be talked about – and because SO many men were drooling over her. She had a big bust, she was pretty but not in the same seemingly unattainable way that people like Giselle are, and she seemed like a cool girl. She was like the hot girl that wasn’t afraid to get messy. The Carls Jr ad, and the Go Daddy ads are a perfect example of that.

    • teacakes says:

She was a gimmick whose fifteen minutes in the high-fashion spotlight as the token ‘curvy and appealing to men’ girl ran out long ago, and now she’s got no chance of catching up to the Gigi Hadids etc who are currently hot.

Brutal, maybe, but them’s the facts.

  8. Brit says:

I wish you would cover Joan smalls’ interview because she’s a woc and said some intelligent things about woc models.

  9. nicegirl says:

    I love Kate Upton.

  10. LAK says:

I’ll be the snarky one and lol at her comparison of catalogue modelling vs fashion modelling.

The point about catalogue models is that they are not special. They are ordinary, everyday types who wouldn’t startle the horses and are unnoticed in catalogues.

That’s not to disparage their work because having steady catalogue work is good. It’s the bread and butter of modelling and one can make decent, if not spectacular money.

Fashion modelling is a different animal and she should thank her lucky stars that she made the transition.

    • teacakes says:

@LAK – exactly! Catalogue modelling is bread-and-butter, but it doesn’t have anywhere near the prestige of high fashion.

And she never really did cross over into high fashion – she was just Anna & co’s gimmick of the season c. 2012-13 as ‘the big boobs model with lots of thirsty male fans’. When her fifteen minutes were done, she faded almost instantly – size aside, she was no Sophie Dahl or Crystal Renn, who could make clothes look glorious no matter what size they were.

  11. Freddy Spaghetti says:

I like what Kate has to say and at least she knew when to quit acting, unlike another featured cover model who keeps trying…

  12. Cinderella says:

She started out thin, got heavier, got thin again. There are no similarities between her size and that of AG’s at this point.

  13. Nilber says:

I swear I thought that pic was of Denise Richards at first.
Maybe it’s the massive migraine that I have at this point but I did a double take.

  14. Trixie says:

“in Florida you just wear bikinis and flip-flops”

When will people stop generalizing? I live in Florida and nope. I don’t wear bikinis and flip flops and none of my friends do either. Kate and her friends may, but that’s them not all Floridians.

  15. my3cents says:

She’s talking about LA women looking all alike – sorry to me she looks like a typical LA model/actress, pretty, blond, big breasted- actually I would not be able to pick her out.
