PETA mad at Jessica Simpson for performing at SeaWorld

Jessica Simpson pulled out the daisy dukes from the back of her closet to perform at SeaWorld in San Antonio, Texas over the weekend. She paired the cut-off shorts with wedge heels, a white crocheted top and an bizarre gray poncho-type vest with a kaleidoscope pattern of pink diamonds. PETA sent Simpson a sternly-worded letter ahead of the performance. The animal rights organization wasn’t taking offense to anything she was wearing as her outfit wasn’t cruel to any particular critter. PETA wanted Simpson to forgo the concert at SeaWorld out of respect for the captive sea animals forced to perform against their will. They tried to make it personal, with a play-on-words reference to the way her weight gain and loss has played out in the media:

People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals’ special projects manager Michelle Cho has written a stern note to Simpson and her manager/father Joe, asking them to consider pulling the concert in protest about the dolphins kept in captivity at the tourist hotspot.

In the letter, obtained exclusively by WENN, Cho writes, “As someone who is used to living in a fishbowl and having the public weigh in on her every move, you might like to give some thought to the animals who are forced to be ‘on display’ their entire lives. Imagine being forced to do stupid tricks and swim endless circles in a bathtub. Life for whales, dolphins, polar bears, and fish who live in tanks and cages is like a bad reality show that plays 24/7. There are no commercial breaks, and the show is never cancelled.

“In 2004, the stress of performing at SeaWorld proved to be too much for one orca (whale) named Ky. After becoming agitated during a show, Ky attacked and repeatedly slammed his trainer underwater as a packed crowd looked on in horror. SeaWorld, which owns most of the captive orcas and dolphins in the U.S., has one of the worst animal-care records in the country. Countless animals have lived and died in misery in these marine theme parks.

“We’re asking you to support the dolphins. Please reconsider your decision to perform at SeaWorld and promise not to appear at venues that exploit animals in the future.”

Obviously that didn’t work, because Simpson did the gig as planned, which was part of SeaWorld’s “Bud & BBQ” concert series. PETA previously named Simpson one of the worst dressed celebrities due to her penchant for fur, so it’s not like she’s going to start caring about the plight of dolphins and whales in captivity. Here is more information about dolphins in captivity from the World Society for the Protection of Animals.

People for the ethical treatment of EARS should be outraged 0.o

  2. Obvious says:

Of course they have one of the worst track records. when you’re open long enough and have a majority of the animals, you will always have the worst record. And yes the animals die-everything dies!!!!!!!

    PETA, go to hell.

  3. Codzilla says:

    Genevieve: LOL! No kidding.

  4. sarcra says:

Ugh, I love animals, but I hate PETA.

  5. PersonEnjoyingTricksyAnimals says:

PETA never ever sees anything but what they want to see. Give me some evidence that these animals are abused. Abuse is not the same as training. Dolphins out in the open sea do tricks for people on their own. I’ve seen it! They were uninvited and unexpected and just stared playing around for us next to our boat. What a joke PETA is. They should start sending letters to every dog owner in the world to tell them to stop making their dogs fetch sticks and roll over.

  6. sarah says:

PETA seems to have started with a little integrity, but it just seems crazy and totally out of touch. They have lost all credibility.

  7. Trillion says:

Was “Puppet Show” over her name on the marquee?

  8. yadira says:

I feel more bad for those poor pair of shorts she is wearing. They look like they are ready to burst at the seams

Peta is ridiculous. They are a bunch of bullies and use these attention seeking celebs to carry on their dirty deeds

  9. BB says:

Person: I hate Peta deeply. But SeaWorld is disgusting. Do you know how many whales die, for one to be captured? Read this news piece if you have five minutes: http://www.10news.com/news/13334667/detail.html
and I think you will change your mind.

Do you know that when they caught the original Shamu, the guy who caught it admitted that he harpooned its mother and let her drown in the sea?

  10. barneslr says:

Ah, steak tonight…my own little mini-protest against PETA says anytime I read about them, I eat steak for dinner that night. Hubby will be firing up the grill!

    Yummy! Thanks, PETA!

  11. BB says:

hmm I don’t know if the link works, but google:
“SeaWorld investigation: Secrets below the surface” – please read and form your own opinion, based on the testimonies of the people who captured whales for seaworld. Peta sucks, they do more damage than good to the animal causes

  12. SolitaryAngel says:

@ Genevieve: LOLOLOLOL!! Made my day, girl!

Second, CB–I don’t think the Daisy Dukes were EVER in the back of her closet! She’ll be Pamela Anderson–looking, and wearing those same damn raggedy pieces of crap one day, you’ll see. Jeez. She’s an embarrassment to our whole GENDER.

  13. stewie says:

    to trillion…

LMAO…yes, they had top billing, but she got the bigger dressing room.

  14. dizzybenny says:

  15. mel says:

who the hell gave peta the permission to dictate to people what they can and can not do. they get on my last nerve.

  16. trish says:

Isn’t Pamela Anderson opening up a steakhouse or something?
    Anybody hear anything?

  17. daisyfly says:

Anytime Peta says anything, my eyes and ears turn off.

    It’s automatic.

  18. Ggirl says:

Why can’t she ever get the microphone thing right? God Bless her.

  19. Bridget says:

Please get rid of the ugly shorts and forget trying to look country. Jess needs all of the appearances that she can get. But who is the idiot that scheduled her to sing anyway?

  20. ChristinaT says:

if by “forced” PETA means being given fish and pats as reward then yes they’re highly tortured animals :/

  21. Hieronymus Grexx says:

Hey Peta, I just ate fish for dinner yesterday, come persecute me.
