Calvin Harris new single is about ‘breaking out’ of a bad situation, interesting

As many of you mentioned in the previous Calvin Harris post, Calvin dropped his new single “My Way” today. I’m including the lyrics-video below. It’s not his best work, and I’m saying that as someone who actually likes some of the music he writes/produces. Like, there were many, many songs on his album, 18 Months, which deserved to be really big. “My Way” sounds like a throw-away, something he had an idea about but didn’t have the time to do a proper amount of follow-through. Here’s the song:

The main set of lyrics is this:

“Why wait to say, at least I did it my way? Lie awake two faced, but in my heart I understand”

“I made my move and it was all about you. I feel so far removed. You are the one thing in my way.”

So people obviously think he’s singing about Taylor Swift. Could be. The lyrics are cryptic enough where they could be about many different things, although I do think he’s talking about one person in particular. Calvin talked to iHeartRadio this morning about what inspired those lyrics:

“[The] song’s kind of about breaking out of a situation that you thought was a good thing. Then, you’re way more comfortable out of it. And it could be anything. It could be a job, or it could be a relationship. I had kind of the idea for the concept for a few years, but I didn’t know how to work out how it sounded.”

[From iHeartRadio]

Hm… “a situation that you thought was a good thing.” My take: I think Calvin has somewhat successfully rebranded his split with Taylor Swift. In the immediate aftermath, when Tay-Tay went running full speed into Tom Hiddleston’s arms paper knickers, Calvin got butthurt and he whined about it (through “sources”) to TMZ. But at some point, he chilled out and perhaps realized that he was better off without the Snake Emoji. The re-branding is part of that – he seems to be saying that what he had with Taylor was real (unlike the Tiddlebanging), but it was time to end it and once he got out, he realized how much happier he could be.

Also: he told iHeartRadio that he’s not going to do an album, he’s just going to release singles. Which means he has more freedom to release new music as he completes it, which means Taylor should be on notice. She’s not the only one who can write blind-item songs.

I think I caught him throwing shade towards Taylor’s possible interest in Zac Efron this morning. I live in Philadelphia and he was on our local radio station promoting his new song. The host asked him about his one-time underwear modeling stint, and if his body still looked like that. He responded “No, I’m no Zac Efron. I’ll never be a Zac Efron.” This was also right after he insinuated modeling underwear was silly, especially considering how seriously he takes his music. It was just a coincidental reference since yesterday all the outlets were discussing a possible Zac + Taylor hook up.

he’s so no over taylor, tbh. ‘way more comfortable out of it’ my arse lol

    • magz says:

yeah I heard that and Elvis Duran show. Plus he stated that the song is about him quitting his job at a grocery store to become a musician… sure Calvin, that’s it. Only you decide to release a song so vague..

      • Dominique says:

Yup, Magz, Elvis Duran! Glad you heard it too! I was rolling my eyes so hard during the whole thing.

Not going to lie, I kind of like it. Calvin and Taylor have a lot in common and in retrospect, their relationship made a lot of sense. They both come off as very immature and vengeful.

My first thought upon hearing “you were the one thing in my way” was the fact that Taylor wrote “This is What You Came For” which turned out to be one of his biggest hits, so he might want to hold off on acting like she was holding him back.

    • Tessa says:

It’s really not his biggest hit at all. We found love in a hopeless place feat Rihanna, which he wrote himself was 10 times bigger.

      • iralagi says:

LOL. TWYCF and My Way are like prequel/sequel. These two are perfect for each other. But I hope he’s not back to her. Be strong Adam!

I would shamef*ck him. *runs away*

  4. als says:

Yeah but Taylor is one of a few that can write pretty good blind-item songs. Calvin’s song proves that he is not one of the few.
Call Taylor whatever but her blind items and post-break-up feelings have great beats and fun lyrics.

    • Hannah says:

His beats are so much better than hers. Maybe she’s a better lyricist. Both of them have really cliched lyrics she’s marginally better.

      • someone says:

He has no lyrics. None. My way my way my way my way my way. Repeat.

Do you still call it the chorus if it’s the only line of the song?

Granted he does have catchy beats.

I like the song, but I would have enjoyed it more with someone’s else’s vocals. He said on some radio show that he wrote the lyrics in the past two months.

  6. Sixer says:

“when Tay-Tay went running full speed into Tom Hiddleston’s arms paper knickers”

There are days when I really, truly, love you, Kaiser.

(Although I am marginally disappointed that the scoring-out does not work with copy and paste).

Can’t w sit for taylor, reponse, I like all to well and clean

  8. Nicole says:

Lolol still Team Petty. So here for this.
Also I like this song way better than the last one so Taylor loses on that front too. Yikes.

  9. someone says:

There aren’t many lyrics to the song. Then again, there are never many lyrics in his songs. I thought maybe all I was seeing was a snip-it of the song lyrics that applied to Taylor but nope, that’s the whole song. I get that they are dance songs meant for clubs but come on now – at least have more than 8 repeated words. Build me a story line or something to make it worth listening to over again. Give me something to think about while you are saying “my way” 100 times in a row.

And seriously – if you are going to dis someone give it a little more effort than a whopping two lines.
