Amal Clooney wears Gucci to the United Nations summit: sailor-ish or lovely?

FFN_Clooney_Amal_CHP_091716_52177185

We haven’t discussed Amal Clooney since June!! I’ve sort of missed her, mostly because she is genuinely fun to cover. As I mentioned in that George Clooney story a few days ago, George and Amal spent the entire summer at his home in Como, Italy. Clooney has historically spent most of his summers in Italy, although it does feel like George and Amal were “away” for a lot longer this summer in particular. I also theorized in that Clooney story that the reason that there were so few photos of the Clooneys this summer was because one or both of them was recovering from some “work.” Who knows? I think Amal looks particularly well-rested, but no, I don’t notice any particular work. Maybe George was the one who will look “different.”

These are photos of Amal at the Women in the World reception at the United Nations on Friday. For her first big appearance in months, Amal wore this “mod” Gucci dress. Am I the only one who sees something naval/sailor-ish with this dress? Am I hallucinating sailor looks because of the Duchess of Cambridge? I think it seems naval to me because of the combination of cream and navy and big gold buttons (on the sleeves). It does have that mod flavor that Amal seems to like – the silhouette reminds me of, like, a stewardess’s uniform from the 1960s. Pan-Am, maybe? Unlike Duchess Kate’s parade of beige pumps, Amal actually loves different and sometimes weird shoes. She paired this Gucci dress with Giambattista Valli shoes that have a mirrored chunky heel. I don’t think the shoes really go with the dress, but sure.

Amal attended the conference because she was celebrating the appointment of a new UN goodwill ambassador named Nadia Murad, and the new UN program Nadia’s Initiative. Amal spoke about Nadia’s harrowing journey through being held captive by ISIS and seeing most of her family get slaughtered by ISIS fighters. Murad is Yazidi, and she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in getting people to understand the living hell the Yazidi people have been put through by ISIS. You can read more here. Amal also did a pre-taped interview with the Today Show which will air on Monday.

George’s back has bothered him for a long time. If he’s taking huge time off for surgery, I bet it’s on his back rather than cosmetic. I know Hollywood can be that shallow, but I imagine the pain limits his film choices more than a couple extra crinkles.

    • Naya says:

It was also around the time when the organization he founded and finances was finalising the investigation that ties South Sudans president and the rebel leader is the same corruption scandals. Between the back problems and that, I wouldnt expect him to be preening much less seeking surgical intervention to aide said preening. George is one of the good guys.

    • HappyMom says:

He was in DC last week. My parents walked right past him in a big group of suits.

    • g.lamerek says:

Why do I get the feeling they are planning a political move. At least George is and she’s perfect for wife compared to the string of starlets he paraded.

    • sasha says:

George would nevaah have any cosmetic work done. He didn’t have his webbed eyelids done 8-10 years ago and, of course, his back/neck/spinal cord thing is still causing him so much strain and pain that he rides motorcycles for over a thousand miles with his best man Rande.
And, by the way, hasn’t he been good-deed-doing by bringing South Sudan’s leaders to task while looking quite healthy?
You know, the same shady guys he was dealing with to bring sovereignty to the South?
I love how people bring his back into the mix whenever convenient.

  2. als says:

Those shoes have great concept but a terrible design.

    • Jegede says:

      Her shoes are hideous.

And do the appearance of her feet zero favours.

    • What was that says:

      Confession time…which ages me..
Mirror heels were big news around this 60’s early 70’s ..I was very young but all I wanted was a pair of mirror heels..
So they are period appropriate …I guess if you are a costumier or fashion historian ..
I loved them..plus all the colours that were ‘new’ for shoes..lime green etc and yes beige!
Before that it was black or brown you would struggle to get anything else ..
Certainly not much choice ..on the UK high street until the Fashion Revolution ..and ‘pop culture’
Oh how I loved mirrored heels!..

      • Katherine says:

Mirror heels? Maybe for strippers. The fantasies of little girls are quite funny.

      • What was that says:

In the UK at that time I was not even aware of strippers and they would have worn stilettos I think…and that type of fashionis from the Kardashians…
We would not even think of that and would not show flesh like people do now
My culture and background are not so sexually orienatated ..
Mirror heels would not have any connotation like that to anyone at that time ..or even now I suspect…
Cleavage etc is more in that line..but people would never show that daytime then..and certainly only a hint!..see Sophie Loren vs Jayne Mansfield photo !!
It is clear that there is a gulf of understanding
I would never think of this style as strippers ..lucite heels but only as I have seen them commentated on by US observers…

  3. Nic919 says:

Amal sometimes has kooky style, but this dress works for the event. Besides she knows how to dress for work events because she has actually held down a job, unlike Kate. I also think it was smart of them to cool it with the press interaction because there was an overload last year.

    • Eleonor says:

      agreed.

    • HH says:

Her fashion is sometimes kooky, but I do like that a woman can be smart with a powerful job AND into clothes.

Really happy that George and Amal had some time away from the spotlight, though. That’s when I had a tough time them seriously, especially in the line of work that she is in. Felt like too many pap walks.

      • QQ says:

YES MAAM! everything you said HH.. Actually most of the times, excepting those gloves I’m with her in the crazy Fashion! She has a Vision and sees it through and makes it occasion appropriate

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

Yep. And I like the dress. It’s one I would happily wear. The shoes? No.

  4. Prairiegirl says:

    Love that dress!

    • Chetta B. says:

Me too. And she’s not a frou-frou movie star, she’s a lawyer who just happens to be married to one.

  5. Shelly says:

It works. Looks professional. My personal choice would have been a narrower Gucci ribbon but that’s me.

    • Tris says:

      Agreed on all points!

    • Esmom says:

I really like it. Polished and professional yet glam. I think Angelina would have looked amazing in this instead of the sheer-sleeved black dress she wore for her recent speech.

    • Katherine says:

There is nothing professional about those shoes. She also wears way too much make up to look professional.

    • Anthi says:

Agreed about the ribbon, I still like the dress though and the shoes, especially because this type of high heel can be comfortable if you have to stand up or walk despite its height.

  6. cindyp says:

Dress is too short, she needs to cut her hair or pull it back. Why do woman with too long hair play with it in public?

    • tracking says:

The dress length is fine imo but agree her hair overwhelms and would have been better back or up.

    • Brittney B. says:

Wow, if she’s an example of a woman “with too long hair”, I hope you never run into me.

      How antiquated that comment is.

      • Em says:

Agreed. I hate these prescriptive ‘rules’ which get thrown at women and one of the worst is this idea that you shouldn’t have long hair after a certain age (or that you can’t wear it down in a professional environment). Really, people? I have zero time to tuck my hair up into a perfect, polished chignon everyday and I suspect neither do most of us. I hate it when people portray women as being inherently bitchy and judgmental of each other (guys can be every bit as bad IMO) but sometimes reading the comments here, I feel like we are so, so, so harsh on these people. It just feels icky.

      • Misa says:

Em, I agree with everything you wrote, even though I love styling my hair in braids (but my hair is also a bright pink-chocolate brown ombre 😉 ).
I too noticed a bitchiness-overload recently, not only here. I’m all for having fun with gossip but some people (mostly women) can’t get a break. I too didn’t like Amal from looking at the pictures, but then I watched an interview and wow: she is the real deal. And much more beautiful in motion, like most of us, except models…
And the “rules” bother me too: it seems there’s a lot of them, from the age when one should marry, to the lenghth of one’s hair, to the kind of people one should date, and sadly they are mostly there for women. But then we harshly criticize women like Taylor Swift (who is particularly hated and whom – disclaimer – I don’t like, especially not as a musician, but I do feel bad for) for mini-managing her public image and inventing stories about herself. I would, too, if I were famous: it’s a way to protect one’s “true”self. People might tear the celebrity persona to shreads, but the real person remains hidden.

      • rosalee says:

for years I dyed my hair dark brown had a chin length bob. I simply stopped – now I have salt and pepper hair that ends near my waist, at least once a day someone will make a lovely comment about my hair. Of course I’ve heard the comments about women my age should have short hair and I say piss on it.. it’s my choice and it looks fabulous

      • KiddVicious says:

In my early 20’s I worked with a lady who was mid to late 50’s. I had really long hair and she would constantly tell me to enjoy it while I could because once I’m 30 I’ll have to cut it off. She could never tell me why I had to cut it off, I just had to. I’m in my 50’s and I still have really long hair. I have cut it short, I’ve had many different hairstyles, but I’m not keeping it short just because I’m over 30.

Back to Amal – I like the dress and the shoes. I thought the shoes were too clunky at first until I saw the mirrored heel, then I thought they were kind of cool. The only thing I don’t like is the Gucci ribbon. I always think “tacky” as soon as I see the Gucci stripes on anything.

      • cindyp says:

So sorry Brittney B, I’m sure your hair looks lovely no matter how long or short it is or how old you are. ??????

      • Katherine says:

It’s not about the hair length. It’s about how her hair is not work friendly. It looks like she needs a stylist just to move from room to room let alone work through a day.

      • Anthi says:

Her hair are gorgeous and I call bullshit on the term “work friendly”, what does that even mean? And who cares if she needs a stylist for her hair, if she can afford one good for her, she doesn’t go to work naked, she just goes with long wavy hair, she is a lawyer not a street fighter or soldier, in what way exactly are her hair not “work friendly” or a hindrance to doing her job. Do they fall in front of her face and can’t read the documents lying in her desk? What?!?!?!

  7. TrueStory says:

I really really really like Amal’s public image.

  8. teacakes says:

yeah, it works – solid colour, clean lines, everything’s covered and no wardrobe malfunctions. Plus I love her shoes. I mean LOVE them. I wish I could get some like them.

Amal’s style is kind of wacky for me, but at least her taste is more interesting than that of the Duchess of Blandridge.

    • Jayna says:

There were some photos from May, maybe, of Amal attending some event on some issues as far as a meeting. I don’t know what it was. It was in a massive conference room with a U-shaped, long conference table where everyone sat. I coveted Amal’s dress. It was a Michael Kors dress.

  9. A says:

Stop sexualizing women playing with their hair or their hands or their lips. That you see something sexual in it is the only reason it bothers you. She is not flirting with anyone. She’s probably just anxious or bored.

  10. Felice. says:

    It’s a little Jackie.

    • Snappyfish says:

& bingo we have a winner. Jackie is what it looks to me she has been going for (or Clooney has been pushing her towards) her style prior to Clooney was a little more London sloane street. She looks good in clothes & she has lovely hair. I think everyone should insist on themselves & never emulate. Ever since Clooney married there have been rumors he wanted to run for office & what better way to legitimize an actor than a well educated Jackie-esque spouse

      • Jayna says:

George recently was asked yet again if he would run for office. He said again never. He said he has friends who are politicians and to him their life looks like hell.

He has consistently said this, that he has no interest. He likes his social and humanitarian causes he’s committed to. If anything, that’s where I see him focusing more as he gets older, with Amal included.

      • Jegede says:

        @Snappyfish

        But Jackie elevated outfits.

A lot of her wardrobe was actually simple, even non-descript. But Mrs K made them special.

Amal – on the other hand – always looks like she’s in costume. From the excess of her wannabe Sloane days to now.

  11. Rocio says:

IMO she looks amazing. Kate Middleton should take notes.

    • vava says:

I think she looks good too.

Kate is getting worse with time. She can’t make a speech, is very awkward during her performances, and has zero style.

    • Annetommy says:

She looks very thin. Like Kate Middleton. Not “body shaming”; fact. She is an impressive woman, however, which Kate isn’t.

      • TyrantDestroyed says:

Even if she’s slightly older than him I would had prefered William to get married with Amal instead of Kate. Both women seem to share a preference for a slender physique and a similar style but Amal is way more accomplished than Kate will ever be. And she seems to really care about humanitarian causes.

  12. Sunsetsnow81 says:

She looks gorgeous as usual! Love her style!

  13. Jayna says:

I love the dress on her.

Earlier in the summer George and Amal put on a fundraiser with another couple over in Italy. I think Lainey said the wife was a lawyer, also. There were a lot of photos of the event when they were all outdoors, and I thought Amal had one of her best looks ever in that white flapper-inspired dress. George looked great in his blue summer suit. They looked happy and made a nice-looking couple.

  14. Jayna says:

Nadia Murad’s story is absolutely heartbreaking. What a true survivor she is and an inspiration.

    • DSA says:

I just can’t imagine having to repeat the story for stakeholders/world leaders/court over and over. I get that it’s necessary to help others, but it would’ve seriously messed with my sanity. If it were me, I’d draft one PDF master file/maybe film one video and then be over with it.

Then again the initiative focuses of helping people “heal”, so maybe she’s taken cared of and provided with mental healthcare?

      PS: Sailor-ish is always lovely.

  15. what's inside says:

Shoes were not right for that event. She looked great otherwise.

  16. Eden75 says:

I think she looks lovely. I am not a fan of the shoes but at least they aren’t beige. I love her hair and think it looks fine and professional. As a professional woman with really long hair it really irks me when people make a big deal out of it being down and occasionally having to be brushed out of a persons face. It’s heavy and sometimes wearing it up is not an option (headache days) and sometimes, we just like to wear it down. It’s clean, it’s beautifully styled and she isn’t whipping people with it, which, on pondering, would have been awesome.

  17. Louise177 says:

Probably the only one but I don’t understand why people are trying to make Amal happen. I don’t see what’s so amazing about her. Also there have been photos of George this summer – biking with friends, out at restaurants. Baffled at the cosmetic surgery claims.

    • Jayna says:

Yeah, there were photos this summer in June and July in Italy and in California in August, one out on a motorcycle ride and another out with Cindy and Rande. I remember that photo because Amal was in some God-awful Stella McCartney pants. I don’t think anyone has been in hiding for plastic surgery. Plus, isn’t their home completed in England? When they are out there where the home is, they are never papped.

I would rather see photos of them with Einstein, Louie, and Millie, anyway. What a great life those dogs lead, summers in Italy. LOL

  18. MrsBPitt says:

mmm….doesn’t look like she is wearing her wedding ring….

    • SilverUnicorn says:

In the third picture it’s quite visible.
I don’t understand all the craziness around the non-use of the wedding ring or the wedding ring watch for celebs, because I wore it for two months after the wedding took place and lost it for 6 months. Then I found it and never wore it again… for nearly 3 years now 😉

  19. Evil Queen says:

The dress is ill fitting and she has gotten too skinny. IMHO

  20. DiamondGirl says:

I think her hair suits her. It softens her strong features and she really is very pretty. Hate the shoes though.

  21. Lucy says:

I want my hair to look like that. Also, interesting/wacky details and all, I do like her style.

    • Timbuktu says:

Funny, I actually thought that in these photos, I can tell how much work it takes to get her hair looking like that. It looks like there’s some major teasing going on under the top layer on her head. It’s actually the first time I had this thought, her hair always looked very naturally thick to me, but here, the enormous difference in volume between the top and the ends actually makes me think that her hair does not look nearly as good without a very elaborate blowout and, probably, extensions, too.

    • Katherine says:

And you can have hair like that, Lucy, if you have a stylist come to your home every day to blow it out.

  22. felixswan2 says:

The shoes are terrible, and I usually dislike her clothing choices.

  23. cynic says:

I think Amal looks good in that dress. Also, RIP to Asia Ramazan Antar, a Kurdish female fighter who was killed on the front lines fighting against ISIS.

  24. amilu says:

I love the dress. Not so nautical that it’s a novelty — just a classy, clean nautical-inspired look.

  25. lisa says:

imo it’s a tad short for the occasion but she’s tall and things might just hit her a little short. unless it was custom sewn, it’s not always easy to lengthen something.

  26. Hazel says:

Love the dress, love the shoes, love her style. And her dress doesn’t look any shorter than that of the woman in the powder blue suit.

    • Eden75 says:

It isn’t. Power dresses and suits for ladies that are in around this age are all about this length. Finding anything longer is not impossible but it is the standard. It is pretty and fun, not dowdy and aging, without being improper. Almost every single one of my suits and dresses are this length, as is just about every other woman in business I deal with. In fact, even the older ladies have embraced it.

I think it’s a flattering length for everyone. Someone short like I am, below the knee cuts us off and we look stumpy. So past the knee needs to be floor length, which is not that appropriate for daytime business wear. She and the other lady are definitely within the lines of propriety on this one.

  27. A Fan says:

    Professional and classy.

On another note, she’s only two years older than Kim Kardashian.

[*But a lifetime away in dignity.*]

  28. Kitti says:

Stunning and smart – if I had daughters I’d like them to pick Amal as a role model instead of the lazy royal broodmares or the Karcrashians.

  29. Moon says:

Amal can wear whatever she wants, imo. She’s a highly accomplished and educated barrister, and if she wants to look like a fashion plate while arguing the finer points of law, why not? I do hate those shoes though, they look like they belong to a night out not a un event.

  30. sasha says:

The clothes she’s worn for the past few days, or at least those that I’ve seen in recent days, while promoting Nadia and her plight, have been total misses. Amal wants to stand out and doesn’t know how to rein it in for want of attention.
I have to say that I watched her UN speech on youtube and was impressed.
I just wish she’d put important issues such as this before her desire to be the center of attention.

  31. DanaG says:

Amal wants to be a fashionista and play lawyer. Go check out what she really does? It is a very quick read cause she barely works. She is wearing dresses worth thousands and thousands of dollars to these serious events she is there for the attention. Go take a look at Amal with her “client” Nadia Murad. This is the most amal has worked in a year she seems to spend most of her time shopping and getting her hair done. She is also a Junior not a senior barrister so she isn’t actually the real lead on these cases she is the “consultant”. The George and Amal show has taken a huge dive she comes across as an arrogant famewhore who spends money but does nothing for those really in need. Unless she can get some facetime on tv or pap shots out of it. George needs to ditch her he barely has an acting career let alone any sort of political career.

  32. Cerys says:

I have never been a fan of Amal Clooney or her fashion sense. However I like the dress and I think she looks good in it. She looks well-presented and professional without being stuffy.

  33. thaliasghost says:

I follow Nadia Murad on twitter, she deserves a bigger following so she can reach more people!

  34. molly says:

The only thing amal cares about is her designer wardrobe. This woman has defended dictators & terrorists, now she has gone to the other side to defend victims of terrorists? Give me a break! Nadia Murad deserves better.
