Julia Louis-Dreyfus won 5th consecutive Emmy, thanked her dad, who passed Friday

Last night’s Emmy Awards was full of poignant moments which made me want to hug my loved ones and tell them how much they mean to me. Julia Louis-Dreyfus was the first award-winner to get me choked up, when she thanked her dad, William Louis-Dreyfus, who passed away on Friday and said that his opinion was the only one which mattered. Julia won her fifth consecutive Emmy, her sixth overall, which gives her the most wins in that category ever, over both Candice Bergen and Mary Tyler Moore. In her speech Julia also referenced some of the craziness going on with the election, saying “While I’m apologizing, I’d also like to take this opportunity to personally apologize for the current political climate. I think that Veep has torn down the wall between comedy and politics. Our show started out as a political satire, but now feels more like a sobering documentary. So, I certainly do promise to rebuild that wall and make Mexico pay for it.

I’ve heard a lot about Veep kind of being prophetic now that Trump is a candidate, and there was an interview on NPR with the writers of the show saying that they wouldn’t have written some of Trump’s antics into the show because it belies belief. Veep also won for comedy series for the second year in a row.

In terms of fashion Julia was in a lovely v-neck Carolina Herrera gown with a polka tulle overlay. I can’t decide if the criss-cross belt detailing at the bust is bizarre or edgy but the dress looked pretty on camera and her styling is impeccable.

Here are some more ladies in black. Allison Janney was up for two categories last night, for supporting actress in a comedy for her work in Mom, which went to Kate McKinnon, and for guest actress in a drama for Masters of Sex, which went to Margot Martindale. She was in a striking Badgley Mischka gown with a a deep v-neck and a high leg slit. I like the mix of fabrics in this gown but it could do without the goofy bow at the waist. I wish she would have brought her hot young boyfriend on the red carpet with her.

Amy Schumer was in Vivienne Westwood, in a silhouette we’ve seen on her before. She kept putting herself down when she was being interviewed by Giuliana Rancic and that’s her shtick but it’s getting tiresome as we’ve discussed. Apparently when Giuliana asked Amy who she was wearing she saidI’m wearing Vivian Westwood and an OB Tampon.” I don’t even remember that, I guess I wasn’t paying attention. I don’t fault Giuliana for asking women who they’re wearing. I get “ask her more,” but this is the whole point of the red carpet and it’s not anti-feminist to love and appreciate fashion. We can do both. Amy brought her sister as her date on the red carpet, and her boyfriend was seated next to her in the audience too.

Why is she pulling a face in this photo?

i am sure the designers that supply them with free dresses (and often pay them obscene sums for photoshoots and “endorsements”) are happy to have someone answering like that.

I like Julia Louis Dreyfus, but honestly, 5 emmy wins in a row? That just seems a bit much. I know the show is great and she’s hilarious but there are so many other deserving actors in that category. Makes me aware of the fact that it isn’t just about the body of work. It’s also about the person and how much they are liked in hollywood….

    • Neelyo says:

Louis Dreyfus is always outstanding, but she outdid herself this season.

I don’t think there was any way they could NOT give it to her for the work she did this year.

      • Nicole says:

Agreed Veep is amazing to me. Heads and above expectation and this year was just another level for her. Also her speech had me in tears by the end.
Allison Janey looked amazing last night. And I love her on Mom.
Won’t talk about that last person because I’m beyond over her

      • AG-UK says:

I watch sometimes on the train going to work but have to stop myself as I start laughing out loud she and Tony Hale.. I love love that show. I also love Silicon Valley too.

      • Ames says:

This. JLD is amazing. An absolute treasure. I used to bemoan the fact that she won everything but then I started watching Veep and I take it all back, she deserves every award, always. She elevates every single thing. She is THAT good.

    • Naya says:

The politics are so infuriating. So basically she is familiar to the old white folk who comprise the voters because Seinfeld. We know they barely bother to watch the other submissions which is why shows that appeal to younger audiences struggle at the Emmys (unless they can build such a heavy media momentum that the old dudes become aware of them). I’m just glad Rami Malek didnt have to wait as long as Tatiana Maslany to have his rightful moment.

But yeah, enough with the Julia worship already. Shes alright but so are a bunch of other actresses who didnt even make the nomination – still pissed at the Orange is the New Black snubs.

“We know they barely bother to watch the other submissions which is why shows that appeal to younger audiences…”

Pardon me, but, who’s this “we”?
I’m so tired of ignorant, uninformed, outsider rants about how the industry works. Reading snippets here and there, bringing your own prejudices, claiming slogans over and over…these do not facts make. There’s a difference between false declarative statements and celebrity gossip. Viewers will always be disappointed. Someone wins; someone loses. And, in the end, even though I’m personally involved and a recipient, it’s just a gold-dipped statue (among many)….. it’s not that important. That’s entertainment!

        You tell em Lina!!

      • Naya says:

You’ve convinced me, its actually a completely unbiased merit based system. Just like the rest of the world. Anybody who complains just has sour grapes. You have to be joking.

Firstly, way to assume that I am an outsider to the system. Secondly, published “insider” accounts on how the system works and why it fails are a search engine away. Every single time theres public consensus that the voters got it wrong, its followed by an industry discussion on why we need a younger more diverse crop of voters. This cant be news to “insider” like you. But in case it is, I found you a nice excerpt from the worlds most inoffensive industry ass kissing publication – TV Guide.

“Now, voters still have to check off acknowledging that they’ve seen the episodes, but , most people probably haven’t watched all of them. Drama and comedy series have seven nominees each — 7 shows x 6 episodes each = 42 episodes! And 42+42=84! That’s not even counting all the other peer group categories they can vote in. This year, the submitted episodes will be available to stream starting the week of Aug. 8. Voting for winners runs from Aug. 15 to Aug. 29. It’s safe to say no one will make all that the time to watch over 100 episodes in that period.”

      • Timbuktu says:

Wait, OITNB did not get any nominations??? Or didn’t win? That sucks either way!
But then again, I’m not a huge Julia fan, and I don’t get VEEP.

      • Bridget says:

I disagree with you there – JLD and Veep have been stellar, and I think it was appropriate that OINTB was bypassed this year. But taste is all subjective! And yes, we know that Emmy voters especially get stuck in a rut (I would have loved to see Amy Poehler recognized at least 1 of those 5 years)

Though if anyone watches Veep, it doesn’t exactly appeal to the old white man conservative crowd. It features some of the most profane language on TV.

      • Naya says:

I dont know, I think a political satire starring a Seinfeld alum with a large supporting cast and only two POC, one of whom is lucky if she gets ten lines a season, is exactly their jam. Even if some of the older foggies in the academy dont watch the show, Julia is still their most familiar, and in their minds likeable, name on the list. Its not like they have the time or inclination to search out something new. Thats how one actress ends up with five consecutive wins.

      • Bridget says:

I happen to think she’s been the best, and the show has been the best, for years. She blew everyone else on that list out of the water this year.

      • Naya says:

I happen to seriously disagree. She is an ok actress. Nothing more. Constance Wu has far better comedic timing imo. Plus that last season was a shark jump and my only lol moment was when Airforce 1 had to land during the inauguration, which also happens to be the final scene. On the othe hand I can point to at least three egregious OINTB snubs starting with Natasha Lyone and the lady who plays Morelo. And the entire writing team for folding serious issues into a funny show and somehow still capturing the nuance in those issues. I could go on about other shows that were snubbed at nomination or lost to inferior work.

But as you said, tastes are subjective. If thats the case, then the system needs to take that into account. If tastes are subjective and theirs clearly skew one way, then there should be measures to prevent one subjective taste from dominating all others. Ditch the voters and start afresh with a more representative group. Reduce the number of categories they can vote for then find a way to force them to actually watch submissions. Place a limit on how many times any one person can take home this “subjective” award.

What I am saying to you is that your tastes are not more valid than mine or the people who are railing on Julias sweep on reddit or twitter. These are not the Olympics. A five year sweep is not proof of talent, its proof of a system thats rigged in her favor.

      • MB says:

        Couldnt disagree with you more.
Every time I watch Veep I am absolutely blown away by the talent of Julia Louis Dreyfus. The writing on the show is great but, more importantly, it is what she does with that material that leaves me in total awe of her ability.

With respect to your last comment that a five year sweep is proof of a system that is rigged in her favor. I agree that the sweep is not proof of talent. No acting award is “proof” of talent because artistic talent is, as discussed up-threat, subjective. Awards are an indication of who people in the industry think has done the best work. Majority rules. But conversely, I really dont see how winning five consecutive wins is proof of system rigging. She is considered, by many, to be one of the most talents comedic actresses out there. I actually think its quite disappointing and insulting to suggest that her award-show success is attributed to a system being rigged rather than her being blatantly talented and hard working.

      • Naya says:

To be clear when I say the game is rigged I mean by 1) the age, race and socio-economic status of the voters which predisposes them to a certain “taste”. Evidenced by the fact that it took media backlash to finally get an actress who plays up to 7 characters in one scene to win an Emmy, because her show skewed too young to catch their attention.
        2) the fact that the way system is crafted, its unlikely they are watching every submission.
        3) the fact that in the event they arent watching her submissions either, they have a safe and familiar name on the ballot; the star of the biggest sitcom of their heyday which (un)coincidentally appealed to exactly their demo – Seinfeld

Frankly, I’m insulted for every other comedic actress in the field that none of them are considered ” blantantly talented and hardworking” against an admittedly subjective test applied by a homogenous group and bandied around as “majority”. If it really is majority, why not test it? Get a more representative voting block and then test that “majority”. Lets see if she cleans up five years in a row then. One or two perhaps but never five.

    • Michelina says:

“I like Julia Louis Dreyfus, but honestly, 5 emmy wins in a row?”

This is why I don’t watch award shows anymore. They pick favorites and that’s who wins, each and every time. I guess it’s hard when someone is that exceptionally good, but still, how many times can you award someone for the same portrayal? At a certain point it does become unfair to newcomers, in my opinion.

      I do love JLD though.

      • Sansa says:

I know where your coming from, but I had not watched VEEP until last year, after so many wins, I finally broke down and binge watched it Backwards. It makes sense to me now why she keeps winning. She is just so funny in it, and the politics in Hollywood are liberal, so…

    • lucy2 says:

I love JLD and am a big fan of Veep – every one of those Emmys is well deserved.
That said, after 5 in a row, if I were in her position, I think I would bow out of the competition next year.

    • pf says:

But that’s the Emmys for you, always so predictable! They give the award to the same person year after year and people who deserve to win at least once never do.

      • Annetommy says:

Some great comedies of the last few years, including Parks & Recreation, Community, and Party Down, got little or no recognition while the same shows / performers win again and again and again.,.

    • Sarah says:

I loved her in Seinfeld, but I find she overacts and is just really not funny in VEEP. I dint get these Emmys either.

      • Justjj says:

I think on Arrested Development she had some moments but I agree with all of the above comments that the shows she’s in are suuuuuper white. Including Veep. It gets to the point now where people of color are so deliberately under represented in these shows, I can barely find them funny because all I’m thinking about is how white washed the narrative is. This is why I think Rupaul’s Drag Race is one of a few funny shows on TV.

  3. minx says:

Poor lady, you could just see–before she even said anything–that she was stressed.

  4. Tifzlan says:

I love, love, love Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Veep. Great show, wonderfully talented cast, amazing writing. She’s hilarious!

    • mellie says:

Agree….she’s so versatile, just look at all the shows she’s been a part of and how well she’s been in all of them!

    • Elyna says:

For a woman born in to immense wealth, Julia Louis-Dreyfus has a tremendous work ethic. I admire her for that and for aging well (yes, including wonderful *touch ups*). Love her cynical humour.
So very sorry to hear her father passed. Condolences to her and her family.

  5. Lauren says:

    Allison did bring her boyfriend!!!!!

  6. Jess1632 says:

JLD is goals! Fifth win in a row is amazing and she looks great

  7. Leah says:

    She’s a comedy acting genius!

  8. Jen says:

I need to know Allison Janney’s skin care regime immediately. Stunning!

  9. Dani says:

Wow much funny. Such genius. I’m wearing a tampon HAHAHAHAHAH FEMINISM, No. That’s not how it freaking works. This is the RED CARPET OF FASHION FOR THE EMMYS. If you do not want to be asked who you’re wearing, don’t walk the carpet. No one is there to see your face and applaud you for being a mediocre extra vulgar comedian who thinks she’s better than everyone. Girl bye.

  10. QQ says:

    PUSH THRU ALLISON !!! WHOOOOOO!!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE that even though they sat Giuliana out an entire award season, coached her out of saying Stupid Sh*t or acting like their BFF, The Stars just wont entertain her sh*t, Like E! is gonna need to go to plan be, She is Unlikeable and the big people have barely disguised contempt, and all she gave us yesterday was that trainwreck interview with Terrence and This Precious Moment with Cabbage Patch Crass Over here talking about her Tampon like we even asked her

    • Steph S says:

OMG, you JUST NAILED what I have been reaching for in my mind but couldn’t figure out…Amy Schumer is a living Cabbage Patch doll! Thank you!!!

  11. Darlene says:

Actually, Kate McKinnon was the first to choke up. Saying she missed her “pop”. They flashed to JL-D’s face and I thought “what’s that look?” and thought she was reacting poorly to Kate’s win, but then she got on stage right after and cried as the thanked her dad. πŸ™

I got choked up both times. πŸ™

    • lucy2 says:

Both moments were really sad. Both such funny talented women, I’m so happy they each won, but sad for their losses.

    • SusanneToo says:

The expression on Jerry Seinfeld’s face as JLD was exiting the stage was quite touching. You could tell he felt for her.

  12. Locke Lamora says:

I am amzed she was able to show up. My grandfather died last week and I feel like dying. I never experienced pain this strong. I can barely get out of my house so kudos to her for being able to go to the Emmys.

    • Chaine says:

Condolences about your granddad. I was thinking the same thing as you, how did she manage to do this whole event. She looks so sad in the red carpet pic. She must have wanted to pay tribute to him on stage if she won, and that got her out the door and through the night.

  13. I Choose Me says:

I don’t watch Veep but maybe I need to start. I’ve liked JLD in every thing she’s been in. This isn’t my favourite look on Julia but she looks good.

  14. Jess says:

The Emmys are notorious for getting hooked on the same actors or shows, which is annoying (even when, as here, it’s the amazing JLD). That being said, this was the most incredible year of Veep to date. It blew me away. Her speech did too – to go from so funny to so sad/heartbreaking like that was amazing. And it made me tear up.

  15. Jayna says:

Julia will be 56 in January. She looks fantastic.

  16. Sarah says:

People get on my nerves. No one has been better than her in the last 5 years. Some came close but no one has surpassed her work on Veep. Life isn’t a charity case. It’s not her job to make life easier for others. Instead of whining, how about work harder. This sense of entitlement is typical of those who want things handed to them. Too bad. JLD shows up and shows out every season. She should not be punished or belittled for being a comedic genius who continues to deliver. Great writing with great comedic timing has propelled her in this category. Strive to reach her level instead of wishing she lowered herself to yours.

  17. sunnydaze says:

So, my newest gem of a tv show is “Adam Ruins Everything” on TruTV. What’s so great about it is the stuff he “ruins” have actual corresponding citations, research you can download, it’s pretty awesome. Anyway, one of the newer episodes was “adam Ruins Hollywood” and goes into how awards are won, red carpet styling, it’s absolutely fascinating (and the lead actress from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend makes a cameo). Completely changed how I look at award season. Spoiler alert – it really is all about money, campaigning and “investing” in a particular actor to raise the network/show profile.

  18. Happymama says:

So how much is JLD worth now that her dad passed away and left the billion dollar empire?

  19. Trixie says:

I get that having a period shouldn’t be shameful and whatnot, but I really don’t need to know when other women are on their periods. It’s just TMI.

  20. Debutante says:

Julia deserves her win. Just because its her fifth in a row doesn’t mean she shouldn’t win anymore ! That’s ridiculous.
So what if others are deserving ??
They are not as deserving as her.
    Maybe next year.
This isn’t kindergarten where everybody gets a turn and a trophy.

  21. Mildred Fierce says:

JLD isn’t winning all these awards because a bunch of old white guys got together in a room and decided to snub all those minorities and lesbians on OINTB. She won because she’s good AND because the Emmys get in ruts with certain performers. Bryan Cranston is a good example. He won several times for Breaking Bad, and, while he legit deserved it, it meant that other deserving actors like Hugh Laurie, who never won for House, and Jon Hamm, who had to wait for the final season of Mad Men to get an Emmy, were overlooked.
