Sarah Paulson in green Prada at the Emmys: stunning or just too hyped?

Sarah Paulson came to the Emmys pretty much a sure thing: everyone loved her portrayal of Marcia Clark in The People Vs. OJ Simpson, and out of the entire cast, Paulson got the best reviews (along with Courtney B. Vance). So Paulson sort of came out knowing that she would win. Thank God she did win! But my point is that everyone was geared up to see what Sarah would wear for her big night, and I think the fashion people convinced themselves ahead of time that she was going to look amazing, before they even saw the dress. That’s my explanation for why everyone was like “this Prada gown is the best thing ever!!” It’s an okay gown, a bit low-cut for Paulson, and it’s a pretty color. It’s constructed well. But why was everybody going crazy about this look? The hype didn’t match the reality. Also: Sarah’s date was the real Marcia Clark who – just my opinion – still looks sort of shell-shocked after all these years.

There were a lot of bright and bold colors on the Emmys red carpet, and many of those bright colors looked amazing and striking. Mandy Moore’s gown was not one of them. Mandy wore this Prabal Gurung gown which… um, looked awful. This mustard-saffron shade is so difficult to wear and, well, she should have chosen something else. The ruffles are the worst too.

I saw Sarah’s dress and immediately thought of Christmas wrapping paper.

  2. AmericanInOz says:

    Stunning.

Her earrings and dress were amazing on camera. Her speech was really good too. No complaints!

  3. Gena says:

I thought Sarah looked absolutely stunning, to be honest. One of my favorites.

  4. Aiobhan says:

The only issue I have is the neckline. I am not sure why I don’t like it, but it does not work for me.

I love everything else about her look though.

    • Esmom says:

It reminds me of the JLo Grammys dress, probably because the color is similar along with the neckline. Too plunging and severe. Sarah’s dress has a few too many bells and whistles for me, I could see her in something slightly more understated. Love her, though!

      • Scarlet Vixen says:

@esmom: Yes! I immediately thought of that ‘infamous’ J.Lo dress, and now I can’t unsee it!

Ah…remember when a super deep vee made fashion news everywhere because it was so unusual and surprising? Now EVERYONE has their boobs out and wear sheer skirts.

      • Chaine says:

Yup, my first thought was J-Lo did it first, and better. The neckline is not right for this actress, but otherwise, the dress is beautiful and love the color on her.

      • stinky says:

J-Lo did not do it better.
She stole the show, but hardly because it looked good.
        Please.

  5. Marie says:

Ellie Kemper’s gown looked way better than Mandy’s and it was in the same color spectrum. It may actually be my favorite of the night.

  6. Dippit says:

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one to not quite get the hype about SP’s dress. It’s a good dress, and she looked good overall, but it didn’t send me into raptures.

  7. jeanpierre says:

I don’t like the blonde hair but she looks good overall.

  8. msd says:

I love the colour of Mandy’s dress (every time I see it on the red carpet I’m reminded of Michelle Williams in Vera Wang at the Oscars) but the dress itself veers into twee – too many ruffles!

    • Mrs. Darcy says:

Yeah I don’t think the color is the problem/looks bad on her. The makeup is too much and the ruffles way too much though.

    • Michelina says:

Yeah, I actually felt like Mandy Moore pulled this color off, which isn’t really easy to do when you’re fair skinned.

  9. Macheath says:

I think she looks absolutely beautiful; gorgeous colour and construction. Really suited her even if it isn’t an out of this world design.
I think Mandy’s makeup looks a little heavy with the dress but I do like the colour a lot.

  10. lilacflowers says:

Sarah’s dress was very Mother of the Bride but she made it work.

  11. mellie says:

I loved it, and her hair is just perfect for her!

    • Nancy says:

Her body is too slim to pull off a plunging neckline like that. I like the dress but not on her. I hate the blonde hair and style. Funny how we look at the same people and see different things. She’s a good actress and her Emmy was a lock. She was perfection as Sarah Palin….I couldn’t suffer through another O.J. movie though, the reality of the original events didn’t need to be replayed twenty years later.

      • jeanpierre says:

She was amazing in OJ, as was Courtney. I’m happy they both won. That show was very interesting to me as a foreign, I hardly knew about OJ case before. I understand why someone who was aware of it all would be overwhelmed by it though. That case is so crazy and sad.

  12. LuluPolly says:

Sarah Paulson is really awesome but she stole her hair from Claire.

  13. Emily says:

Her dress kind of reminds me of the famous J Lo “green dress”.

  14. ali says:

I like the dress, but not the hair. Robin Wright did it first and better, sarah looks like she went to her hairstylist with a picture of Robin Wright, or Charlize Theron for that matter, and said: “exactly like this!”

  15. Bridget says:

I like the dress, and it’s not like Sarah Paulson is known for having super red carpet style (I personally think it’s really interesting and like it, but she’s not pretty pretty princess).

  16. Mrs. Darcy says:

I love the colour on Paulson but not the dress, way too Grandma goes to Vegas. I think something sleek/more minimalist would have worked better with her haircut. I am happy she won though, she was awesome in People vs. O.J.

  17. Leah says:

Well deserved. Her performance was brilliant.

  18. Babsie says:

Dislike both dresses, but love LOVE Sarah’s hair. That look is excellent on her. Her makeup looks great too. And she so deserved the win. She was great in that show. So was Courtney Vance.

  19. I Choose Me says:

I love the colour and I like the beadwork/detailing but it didn’t wow me at all. Her hair and makeup though was good.

As for Mandy Moore, I like that mustard saffron colour but agree on the ruffles. That lipstick shade suits her.

  20. Kitten says:

Mandy needs to practice her red carpet posing because that “bored kid hanging out at the mall” look isn’t doing her any favors.

    • Poisonous Lookalike says:

      Yes!

Count me in with those who don’t like the color on her… even though I adore that shade, it just isn’t working for her.

  21. QQ says:

Dress Of the Night for me, The way that sparkled when she moved? The Hair?? the Earrings? (my Bf LOVED that!) *swoon* Her Boo Saying on Twitter “AM I SEEING HER?!?” was a Heart melter

  22. Applepie says:

    Whats SP doing with PMK????

  23. K says:

I love love love love Sarah’s earrings! The color of the dress is pretty as for the look it’s a bit 70s for me but that’s their look right now.

I hated Mandy’s, I love that color but she couldn’t pull it off, plus the bottom is not great. Mandy’s hair looked beautiful though.

  24. Frey says:

Sarah always looks fierce. But what is with Mandy Moore looking so glum these days? Saw her in a cute pink outfit recently, bUT she looks miserable there too.

  25. Chaine says:

Marcia Clark is one of those lucky people for whom aging and weight gain improves their appearance. I would give her a hair style update, though.

  26. Cerys says:

I thought she was great as Marcia Clark in the OJ programme and deserves the award. However the dress is ugh – the neckline, the material. It just doesn’t do anything for her and reminds me of a Christmas tree

  27. minx says:

    Ruffles, blech.

  28. mayamae says:

I think Sarah brought her friend Pedro Pascal, too. He was sitting on the other side of Clark.

I was so glad that Sterling won, and the audience seemed so happy for him. Scenery chewers like Courtney typically win (and did), but the more subtle acting is often over looked.

  29. Tara says:

Sarah’s look must’ve translated better in motion. Everything about it looks overwrought to me, hair, dress and WAY WAY too heavy makeup. Reminds me of Joan Crawford.

  30. Pmnichols says:

Loved her Prada dress. Hair, jewelry and make up were perfection. Her speech was wonderful and her “date” the cherry on top. Perfect all the way!!

  31. Debutante says:

Love it..love the low cut neckline, love her earrings, love her hair. Love her.
    Sarah rocks.

  32. phonetics says:

What do you mean “a bit low-cut for Paulson”? As in, you don’t think her boobs look great cause they’re not super perky? That’s messed up, she looks great.
