Sarah Hyland in Monique Lhuillier at the Emmys: bizarre or fashionable?

Sarah Hyland made the bold move of pairing a Monique Lhullier embroidered top with dual side trains with a pair of black pants. We get a lot of our fashion IDs from The Fashion Court’s twitter and they have a runway photo of this outfit with white pants, but the pants are embroidered and look too busy. I do like the white pants better in theory, but not in lace as it competes with the embroidery. This is a bold choice and I like the elegant floral and butterfly pattern on the top. Seeing all of these dresses with embroidery makes me want to learn how to do it. Her hair and makeup are also perfection, I was impressed by all the good styling last night.

Here’s Sarah’s costar, Ariel Winter, in Yousef Al Jasmi, which is a dress Kylie Jenner was seen in during NYFW, only shorter. Ariel said on the red carpet that she loved the dress, saw it and picked it because it was “sparkly” and she “loved the fit of it.” Ariel likes formfitting fashion and she often dresses like a Kardashian, so it makes sense that Kylie has worn this. Sarah and Ariel were there to support Modern Family, which didn’t win in the two categories it was nominated in, best comedy and best supporting actor, for Ty Burrell. Modern Family has won so many Emmys so I don’t think anyone was broken up over this.

Julie Bowen was in Lela Rose, in an all white sheath dress with bronze metallic straps. This is an understated, polished look but there’s something off about her styling. I’ll be delicate – hopefully it will settle.

Constance Zimmer, like Sarah Hyland, was in Monique Lhullier, in this white cap-sleeve gown with a fuchsia brocade-like print. This is too bright pink for me. She was up for best supporting actress in a drama for UnReal, which went to Maggie Smith, of course, who didn’t bother to show up as usual. That was an ongoing joke last night and it worked I thought. Constance talked to Chris Harrison on the red carpet on ABC and he told her he wanted a cameo on UnReal, which is loosely based on The Bachelor. Oh and Kaiser wants me to say something about Constance’s hair. This is the classic helmet hair we had in the 90s. I had this hair in college in a dark red color inspired by Scully. It’s not surprising to me that 90s hair is coming back too and that it’s just as fug as most of the fashion.

Sarah’s dress is a poor knock off of the Dior mess that Emma Watson wore a few years ago. That outfit was bad, and so is this. I will give half a point because it is different, though.

    • Lyka says:

Yup, and Kiernan Shipka wore a similar piece (also Dior) to the Emmy’s last year. The contrast of the black pants is too stark for me every time, but a big smile elevates anything.

  2. Georgia says:

I love Constance’s dress but not the hair. And I need her lipstick ♡

    • LannisterForever says:

Yeah, Constance’s look is amazing except for the hair. But she even pulls that off because she’s such a boss lady!

I like Julie’s look too, but the girls both look awful.

    • Machiamellie says:

Agreed. I had stars in my eyes when I saw the dress. So lovely!

  3. Jegede says:

    Ariel Winter………..I’m sad.

    • MC2 says:

I agree. There is something ‘off’ about her to me- like she is parading self confidence but is really lacking in the worst way underneath it all. But maybe I’m reading into things too much……I guess if I saw anyone in that green swimsuit with cut of shorts she wore last week I’d think “damn- they must be hurting inside”. I hope I’m wrong and she’s really young. I am glad to see someone who is not a size 0 sporting the fashions like they all do (minus the green swimsuit debacle).

I love Sarah Hyland and love her here. Would have preferred white pants but she looks great.

  4. HH says:

I really like Sarah Hyland’s choice. I like that it’s bold, but in an understated way.

    • I Choose Me says:

Me too. Great fit, great styling and she seemed to love it.

I dislike Ariel’s dress. Beautiful girl and the fit is great but sheer plus sparkly will never not look like Vegas-y.

      • HH says:

When people dress in a hypersexual way it seems like a shtick or gimmick. That’s what I get from Ariel Winter, the Kardashians, Emily Rajatowski (spelling?), Courtney Stodden, Blac Chyna, Amber Rose, Miley Cyrus, etc. I don’t know if I can think of anyone who dresses in a hypersexual manner and it seems genuine.

  5. lucy2 says:

I like Constance’s dress but the hair and makeup combo was not my favorite.
I kind of like Sarah’s looks.
Ariel, step away from all things Kardashian! I usually like silvery dress that have a vintage, art deco look to them, but that one is too see through and not flattering.

  6. Deanne says:

Ariel Winter is becoming her own troll. She chooses to expose as much skin as possible, which is her right, but the clothes wear her, she doesn’t wear them and they tend to be unflattering. Then when people inevitably comment on social media or in fashion segments on talk shows, she accuses them of body shaming and being sad and pathetic. She needs to grow a thicker skin if she is going to continue to dress that way. She’s a beautiful girl with a cute figure and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to look sexy, but her clothing choices as of late have been really bad.

    • Machiamellie says:

Agreed. Even after the breast reduction, she is curvy and always will be. She needs dresses that are tailored to her shape, not to a more willowy figure.

      • Wiffie says:

        Machiamellie-

I’m going to wax philosophical here, but…. why? Why should she choose something else because people think it’s more flattering? Is it REALLY hurting anyone if she picks a dress she loves that doesn’t “look good” (which is subjective anyway). What harm does it REALLY do to not dress for your body type?

I get the intent, and if someone wants the input and wants to dress in the most flattering way, fine, but we still have a right to dress dowdy, Ill fitted, tacky or sexy, if that’s what makes us tick and feel good. Right?

  7. Emily says:

I thought Sarah Hyland looked really cute and was surprised to see that so many people didn’t like it!

    • ichsi says:

Yes, it’s very pretty and I absolutely envy her for being able to wear something that gives you hips.

  8. QQ says:

LOVED Sarah’s situation That embroidery on TV Popped!

This is The Best Julie Bowden has Looked in a while, both weightwise and Picking something that is actually flattering for her

IDK Constance Zimmer is Working for me

  9. Kk says:

I like Sarah’s outfit but do not like the hair/makeup. She is beautiful and would look better with 1/2 the makeup and no blonde highlights. The hair/makeup is kind of Real Housewives of OC. She doesn’t need that much embellishment.

  10. serena says:

Sarah Hyland is always cute but I really loathe her hair colour, it’s so Jennifer Aniston and I don’t think it suits her that much, tbh.

  11. Frey says:

Sarah top would be stint with a white skirt or something. Those pants ruin in.

And the other Modern family sister looks tacky.

  12. Amanda DG says:

I dig Sarah’s dress because it’s different and something I would want to wear since I’m not much for skirts or dresses.

Her co-star looks bad…she tries way too hard. She’s too short and curvy for an ice-skater-looking dress.

  13. Pmnichols says:

Ariel Winter needs to either burn that hideous dress or invest in Spanx. 100 percent horrible.
