Jennifer Lawrence & Chris Pratt get romantic in ‘Passengers’: meh or yay?

A few months back, LaineyGossip referred to Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence as the Prom King and Prom Queen of Hollywood. It’s true – they are the two most successful young actors, and it seems pretty obvious that producers and studios would look to put them in a project together. That project ended up being… Passengers, a sci-fi love story. They filmed the project last year and the first trailer was released today:

I understand how this looked good on paper. Sci-fi, everybody loves something sleek and cool and futuristic. Everybody loves romance between two attractive people. Everybody loves action-drama too. But is it just me or does it seem… kind of blandly uninspired? Don’t get me wrong, I’m sort of curious to learn why their characters “woke up,” but is that enough to see the film? No. But I’m sure people will go see it, considering it stars the Prom King and Prom Queen.

YAY! They are my 2 number one celebrity crushes so this will almost be like p0rn to me 😀

  2. QQ says:

I Like her and I Definitely love Sci Fi… if anything the “romance” part of this is where I’m not as Interested as I could be.

  3. Rachel says:

I can’t get behind Chris Pratt as a romantic lead. I think he’s hilarious. I love him in his action roles. I just don’t buy him in this kind of role. And a “scifi love story” isn’t going to pull me into the theater to see if I’m wrong.

  4. Sarah says:

I don’t really see her as a romantic lead – I dont buy her as having sexy charisma/connection with anyone she’s acted with…

    • AuroraInSpace says:

LOL! Did you watch the trailer?

    • Bread and Circuses says:

*shrug* She seemed sexy-enough to me in that trailer. Maybe you just don’t connect with this actress’ work?

    • Camille says:

I’m not much of a fan of her either (I find her over rated and fairly irritating) and I think this pairing seems off – no chemistry (but not as bad as her and Bradly Cooper together, ick). The movie looks meh, I wish it had been cast with a different actress.

  5. HH says:

I don’t get Jennifer Lawrence. So, aside from money, I don’t get why she’s cast in anything. That being said, I’ve heard/read more about her rather than watched her in film, so that could be the cause for the annoyance. 🙂

  6. Tiffany says:

Michael Sheen!!! Lawrence Fishburne!!!! Andy Garcia!!!! I am in.

Oh yeah, Lawrence and Pratt too.

  7. MrsBPitt says:

I thought the trailer looked pretty good!!!

  8. detritus says:

They are too much the same.

I love them separately, but l don’t think I want to see them together if it makes sense?

  9. Hudson Girl says:

I read the screenplay when Keanu was attached to it and trying to get it made for years. It’s interesting and offers up some philosophical questions and thought, at least a little compared to the typical Hollywood stuff.
I’m curious to see what changes they have made to plot.

    • Vox says:

I would probably be interested if Keanu was in this. I find Chris and Jennifer incredibly bland so the movies does nothing for me without interesting leads.

  10. AuroraInSpace says:

I can’t wait to see Jennifer Lawrence in this! And it is wonderful they picked someone closer to her age and with charisma, like Chris Pratt, to star with her. I can’t wait to see them together!

  11. Erma Gerd says:

Two pieces of white toast. Meh. Not interested.

    • JFresh says:

+1 These people are not interesting any more. Should be Lupita and Justin Theroux. That would be hot.

  12. Jenna says:

People won’t care all that much, but this movie is VERY important in terms of where Hollywood is headed. Passengers is a big-budget studio movie that isn’t based on an existing property, but starring two of the biggest stars on the planet. Or at least two people that studios are very hot on. If this bombs, it could be curtains for movies like this any time soon. It’ll be used to say, “woah, even the biggest stars on the planet can’t sell an original idea, so let’s just make Star Wars 7 or another superhero movie.”

So I’ll be waiting in line for this regardless.

    • Nik says:

      Still not interested. *shrugs*

    • BadAssCompass says:

it’s really tragic what it has come down to, this supposed “not being able to sell original idea”. Passengers does not look anything more original than say Oblivion or Edge of Tomorrow, coincidentally both starring Tom Cruise not so long ago. And those did just fine. This just looks bland on a high budget. Actors have zero chemistry and seem more fit for a buddy comedy with their displayed acting chops. So it depends on how good the writing is and ultimately, a quality scifi depends on a deeper themes/morals about human existance. On a 150 mil budget great visuals and action packed sequences are the least what’s expected.

      • Gill G says:

Whatever about Prattle, Lawrence has shown she has the ‘chops’ for wayyyy more than ‘buddy comedies’.

This looks like fine popcorn entertainment – no more, but no less. And I hear the script is really good.

      • Neverwintersand says:

Though, the “Edge of Tomorrow” has zero original ideas, since it was based on a manga.

      • Chinoiserie says:

Edge of Tomorrow and Oblivion did make money but neither were hits really.

      • Trixie says:

Both Oblivion and Edge of Tomorrow are actually good movies – say what you will about Tom Cruise but he’s always good in his movies, and the female leads in the two movies are great.

This looks like it could be interesting, but the trailer isn’t great.

    • Ji-yun says:

True. I think it looks meh, but I will be willing it to do well just so that there will be more opportunity for original storytelling to come to the fore in Hollywood, which has become so stale in its ideas. I think it’s one reason that TV has had a renaissance: fresh, new (or new takes on) stories.

  13. Caitlin Bruce says:

I love them both separately but I don’t know I can’t decide if the trailer looks good or bad like almost forced?

  14. Kitten says:

Sigh. I predict another turd of a movie.

Pratt has no ability to transform himself which makes him perfect for action films, a genre that requires minimal–if any– range for lead actors.

In terms of acting. J Law is hit-or-miss for me and Pratt always screams douchey fratbro no matter what role he’s in so this is a NO for me.

    • Steph says:

Lawrence should go back to indie movies. She was her best in The Beaver and winter’s bone.

      • Kitten says:

        100% agree.

      • Josefina says:

She’s too Hollywood now to go back to indies. Even if she does, and even if she delivers the performance of her life, it would still not feel organic to me.

Hollywood actors have that, for me. They can be very talented and they can give great performances, but it will always be _____ acting. Leonardo DiCaprio is the prime example of this. Other actors can be very famous, but still dissapear into their characters and deliver something more organic, like Tilda Swinton.

If she went back to indies it would be like, oh, look. Jennifer Lawrence did an indie movie.

I’m not sure if anything of what I just wrote made sense.

  15. Freddy Spaghetti says:

I loved the trailer–count me in! And anyone who thinks Chris Pratt can’t play a man in love never watched Parks and Rec. He and April were epic.

  16. Lambda says:

It looks sooo cloying. Meeting cute, danger, conspiracy, self-sacrifice! Blegh (and I could watch Speed on a loop). The trailer felt like a mishmash of Sleepless in Seattle, Titanic, and Gravity. Hopefully the movie is more original than what the trailer suggests.

  17. Tara says:

TMZ just dropped a bombshell. I don’t know if they’ll get to it here today.

When I say bombshell, I mean bombshell.

  18. Georgia says:

I feel like I’ve already seen this film… and please please please don’t let Andy Dwyer die in space 🙏

  19. Alyce says:

I think this actually looks really good!

  20. tracking says:

    Meh.

  21. perplexed says:

When she plays someone age-appropriate, I think she’s really good.

  22. artnoosa says:

I want to see the movie but was bothered by how much they showed of the movie events.

  23. Leah says:

I love sci-fi so i will probably see it.

  24. Alex says:

This is going to be the most annoying press tour ever. The trailer looks like a boring ad of vanilla pudding.

  25. Ji-yun says:

I read the script (I think it’s still up if you google it. It’s by Jon Spaihts).

The script was interesting but suffered from some clunky dialogue and awful writing occasionally (for example, the character played by JLaw is described in ridiculously male gazey terms and “climaxes gorgeously” in a sex scene, while Pratt is a brooding-but-brilliant everyman, etc.). The trailer looks a bit meh to me, and I was actually quite looking forward to how it would all look and come together.

  26. Moon says:

Jlaw’s limited range as an actress really shows here…and their chemistry seems awkward and off.

    • Amanda DG says:

I do think she’s a good actress, but yeah, this is not for her.

    • jbap says:

I don’t get how this shows J-Law’s ‘limited range’. (Surely her range is exceptionally wide – going from indie intense to rom-com – more so than most other actresses?) In fact, though the trailer looks a bit meh, it looks like an excellent role for her.

  27. Caroline says:

Is it just me or does this look like a fake-movie-inside-a-movie like Notting Hill’s fake “Anna Scott” sci-fi ??? Cue Hugh Grant watching through his Rx goggles LOL

(also it looks like hot garbage, esp knowing how Chris Pratt professes to be “too honorable” to his wife to actually kiss someone else on camera …. he already told us not to buy what he’s selling)

  28. TheOtherSam says:

They look fantastic for having just woken up in space. They look like they just stepped out of a salon in Beverly Hills. JLaw’s hair and makeup are perfect.

  29. Margo S. says:

    Spoiler alert:
I think I remember reading that he wakes up by accident and he chooses her to wake up with him. Because he doesn’t want to live alone on the ship. I didn’t realize he was going to then pretend that they both woke up by “mistake.” I’m intrigued. Can’t stand jlaw but Chris Pratt is great! Swoon!

    • DelilahJones says:

I remember that too! The whole time I was thinking “I know his secret! Wait? How do I know his secret?”

  30. Mari says:

I love Chris Pratt!! He and Paul Rudd are my favorites, that’s why I need to know this: recently I came across from various reports: foruns, Lainey etc that Paul Rudd is a douchebag. There’s like a division: some said he’s not that nice: dick, asshole, full of himself, cheater, treat people who are below him very bad. Between 2011 and 2013 Lainey from Lainey Gossip said he’s not that nice and in 2013 she tell this: “Paul Rudd, the nice, floppy-haired dude who makes women swoon, is actually a douche bag, the kind who compulsively checks his email in the middle of an interview and demands his assistant bring him his iPad. Now”. yeah…, it’s pretty sad, but I had my suspicions, that’s why a dig on internet. still do and have find some many stories. And if lainey said something like that I believe.
There’s also others who claims worked with him and said he was a total jerk. others when met him that he’s very quiet.

Of course people who claimhe is really nice, adorable, polite… I want to believe. but if there’s some many who said otherwise it’s strange… perhaps the fame has gone his mind. i’m seeing a lot of photos on instagram with him: super chill nice…
I don’t want to believe he is only nice with the famous people, wich is what’s apparently. And read some of his older interviews he came across someone very insecurity. The recently ones are little better when he said he’s not that nice. OK. perhapes he changed. Or maybe it’s a PR move.
If I wa he’s manager, agent i would sayto him should take a year off. Sometimes dissaperar is the best what a actor can do. He doesn’t need be everywhere like he does. God, is tiresome.
Also I realy want to believe he’s this charity guy… but I never read anithing bad about it!

I really like to know you guys with you have any tea, story to share. I became a fan recently so find this thing is very sad… we never want our favorites ones be that assholes.

Sorry for my bad english. xo xo

  31. Scarlet Pimpernel says:

    Feels like Brexit to me.

  32. Veronica says:

I’m all about sci-fi and romance, so I’m game. I know she can be a dumbass sometimes in interviews, but she recently had a no-name costar post about how gracious and upbeat she was while dealing with an asshole director on set, so I’ll give her the credit that her professional reputation seems legit.

  33. Dan Lopez says:

“they are the two most successful young actors”. WTF Pratt is 37 years old, and has guardians of the galaxy which was huge maybe because of him, and jurassic world did mega bucks because of the franchise, not the actors. I was an intern @ Village Roadshow in P D (project development) back in ’11 and still talk to some of the folks working there. The buzz is that the brass @ Columbia pictures are a little nervous about the tepid interest in this film. Especially when the 2 stars combined were paid close to $45 million, and probably each getting points on the back end as well. I love ‘me’ some J L, but I think I’ll Redbox this one.

    • Josefina says:

Yeah, that’s what I was thining about. Chris Pratt hasn’t exactly proven himself to be a box office draw. The success of his films can be attributed to many factors other than him. Especially Guardians – I don’t think anyone watched that movie because of him?

  34. Cassidy says:

Forget the movie, I’m looking forward to the press tour with these two!
