Daniel Radcliffe: ‘It’s pretty undeniable’ that Hollywood is ‘racist’

Here are some photos of Daniel Radcliffe out and about in London on Wednesday. He’s promoting his new film, Imperium, which is why he ended by being interviewed by the BBC. Most of the conversation was not about his film though – he was asked about race and Hollywood, and his answers are pretty interesting. Radcliffe has been talking about race a lot recently, saying that he’s disturbed by his friends in England, some of whom are the sort of pro-Brexit folks who hate immigrants, etc. While chatting with the BBC this week, Radcliffe mostly talked about race in Hollywood though:

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has said it is “pretty undeniable” that Hollywood is racist. He told the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire programme the film world was seen as “very, very progressive”, but was “lagging behind” industries in encouraging diversity. Radcliffe also said it was hard for gay actors to come out for fear of being typecast in gay roles.

The 27-year-old British actor has starred as JK Rowling’s child wizard in several films since 2001. But his latest screen role, in the thriller Imperium, is as Nate Foster, an FBI agent who goes undercover to infiltrate a white supremacist group.

Radcliffe told Victoria Derbyshire this had led him to think more about racial issues, and to consider how close to “mainstream” some of the opinions in the film had become. He criticised the Republican US presidential candidate, Donald Trump, saying he had “stirred up” feelings of “fear and hatred”.

Asked whether Hollywood was “racist”, Radcliffe, who is on the panel that chooses Oscar winners, said: “It’s pretty undeniable. We like to think of ourselves as being a very, very progressive industry, but we have been lagging behind in all kinds of areas. ”

Radcliffe also voiced concern that gay actors felt unable to come out because “I suppose then people just want to cast you as gay”.

In 2012, the actor declared himself a supporter of the Labour Party, having previously backed the Liberal Democrats, and has since voiced support for leader Jeremy Corbyn. Asked about recent allegations of anti-Semitism within Labour, Radcliffe – whose mother is Jewish – described them as “absolutely awful” and “shocking”. But he said he was still likely to back Labour at the next election “if it was a choice between that and the Conservatives”.

I get why this is a big headline in the UK, but to me it’s just sort of a shrug? There’s a context to what he’s saying, and he’s not wrong. Donald Trump has made white supremacy more mainstream. Hollywood is lagging behind the curve in racial acceptance and diverse casting and storytelling. Would I say that all of Hollywood is undeniably racist? No. But I don’t think that’s what DanRad is saying either.

    Welpington! He Gets It!

What can I say? I love him so much.

I like little Dan. A lot.

I think he was actually on Victoria Derbyshire (that’s one of our daytime talk shows about politics) because he could get a bit of current promotion in AND had been the topic of a British Twitter spat over the Labour leadership contest. Harry Potter himself is pro-Jeremy Corbyn, while JK is vehemently anti-Jeremy Corbyn, so it was all very topical. (It’s very much like Sanders v Clinton).

OH NOES! WHAT IS A LABOUR-SUPPORTING POTTERHEAD TO DO?

But you can always count on little Dan to have an honest, thought-through and heartfelt position on everything.

    He’s 27? Ugh, I’m old.

I try not to idealize celebrities because that almost always ends very badly, but I’m so impressed by how well he’s turned out. He seems like a genuinely nice, thoughtful guy.

My company worked with him a few years ago when Horns was being made. He is the tiniest little guy. Very nice though.

I’ve definitely always gotten the impression that he was a very small man but he also seems to be a genuinely nice person and I find him very likable.

Yes! Swiss Army Man was so great. His interviews are funny, smart, and his responses are typically very succinct and well thought out. He’s talented and doesn’t take himself too seriously. Just seems really nice and down to earth. I wish him and Paul Dano would do more stuff.

All of this! I was the only one in my family who really enjoyed Swiss Army Man. I thought it was great- the soundtrack is really good too. He’s an amazing person and I really hope that he continues to give great interviews and be a genuinely kind person. I have never read a bad word about him and that makes me so happy.

Never found him hot, understandable since I think he looked 10 when I was 20. I’m 34 now and never like beards but him plus beard is pretty hot:-)

I love that he’s such a well-spoken, smart, vocal celebrity. And I’m glad that he totally gets the reality of racism in Hollywood. I think that for issues like sexism, racism, and homophobia, the active and vocal presence and participation of allies–people who may not be part of the oppressed groups but who stand up for their rights–can make an enormous difference.

We “honk” for celebrities we want more posts about, right? Honk Honk. I just love this man. I will be absolutely devastated if it turns out he is a narcissistic a-hole. I know part of my love is an extension from my love of Harry Potter; however, he’s always insightful and seems so truly genuine.
