Guillaume Canet defends his ‘strong & intelligent’ partner Marion Cotillard

wenn20646699

Do you feel sorry for the crap thrown at Marion Cotillard in the past week? I do feel sorry for her, for the most part, although I think Marion also got thrown under the bus by some people who really, really wanted the Brangelina Split to be about Angelina Jolie being cheated on. That story would have suited a lot of people’s narratives about what was supposed to happen. Marion also had a difficult time because of an unexpected confluence of events: she had gotten to the stage of her pregnancy where she was showing and about to announce it, plus in the middle of the Brangelina Split news, Paramount released a “sexy” new trailer for Allied, boasting of Brad Pitt and Marion’s on-screen chemistry. The idea of an affair was compelling, I get it. But Marion insisted that it wasn’t true. And now her partner/baby-daddy is saying the same.

Marion Cotillard’s partner Guillaume Canet is speaking out against rumors that Cotillard had an affair with her Allied costar Brad Pitt, or that she had any role in his divorce from Angelina Jolie.

“I don’t usually make it a habit to comment on rumors made about us,” the actor-director, 42, wrote in French on Instagram Friday, alongside a picture of a “Danger” road sign. “I also don’t usually talk about my private life which until now I’ve always protected attentively … But the fury of the tabloids, the venal stupidity of some people calling themselves journalists, the haters who feel braver behind a keyboard, drive me to speak of the pride, love, respect and admiration I have for Marion staying as strong and intelligent in the face all these stupid and unfounded accusations,” he added.

“I think we’re all living with much more important things at this moment and now it’s time to move on and raise the bar a bit,” Canet continued. “Even if there’s so much work for some, I want to be positive. And as Marion said so well I hope you get better and aspire to something in your life than constantly sending s—!”

[From People]

You know what I love? That both Canet and Cotillard used the term “the haters.” Is that a thing in France, or amongst French-speaking people? To dismiss people as venal, idiotic “haters”? Or is it just a consistently weird translation issue? It’s just that the last time I heard someone English-speaking dismiss someone as a “hater,” it was Donald Trump! It’s a dated speech pattern, I’m just saying. Anyway, fine, whatever. Marion and Guillaume want you to know that they’re fine and she never banged Brad Pitt. I believe them… I guess. You can see Canet’s Instagram here.

Um… Did we ask him?? I Mean Is all good and well but is it not strangely Thirsty for these two to be issuing statements about other people’s Marriage Demise? LOLOLO

    • grace says:

Yeah, so strange for them to get into the spotlight when, in fact, the media did that instead! I say kudos to Guillaume for defending his relationship and his partner!

    • AlleyCat says:

@QQ I agree! Marion already issued a statement last week. No one cares about that rumor (or them) anymore.

    • Cherry says:

Yeah, I dunno. Lainey has a story about ‘Allied’ being boosted by the Brangeleaveya publicity- is it mere coincidence that they released that ‘“sexy” new trailer’ in the middle of the Brangelina Split news, plus a statement from Marion referring (indirectly) to the film, and once the storm around that one died down, now another statement from Marion’s partner? I mean, would we still be talking about an alleged affair between Brad and Marion if it wasn’t for the fact that Cotillard and Canet keep bringing it up?

      • Meg D says:

Jesus what planet are you living on?

      • Minxx says:

Exactly. One statement from Marion or a joint statement from her and Guillaume would have been enough. But he had to wait to get himself some publicity later on. Thirsty as hell.

      • Spiderpig says:

One of my best friends works in a hospital and is married to a B-list TV actor (the kind of actor who doesn’t do interviews or red carpets). One time he got photographed kissing a slightly infamous (colourful love life) actress on the cheek/corner of lip and my friend had paps outside her front door and her workplace for two days. She was forced to take time off work because of the intrusion.

Yet the tabloids barely even covered it, just a couple of small articles on page 27 or something. They didn’t print any of the pap shots of my friend. For the average person it would not be on their radar and they would scoff at the idea this small amount of tabloid gossip could be intrusive.

Civilians have no clue what it’s like. Whatever you see in the press is maybe 5% of what the person experienced.

    • sunny says:

I don’t actually think it is thirsty at all considering the press was insinuating that she had a role in that marriage demise and speculating on the child she is carry.

These two have been together for a decade and have been pretty low key. I think these statements are more about cutting the press off at the pass then any general thirst….

      • qwerty says:

Yeah, not thirsty. You might think people have moved on but I’m sure their phones are still ringing 24/7 for comments.

      • Eleonor says:

        I will be pissed too.
Probably she was all happy for the pregnancy, and the media all over the world are speculating about her being in love with Brad and pregnant with his baby.

    • Em says:

After people casting assertions over the paternity of their unborn child, I think he had every right to speak out. Not thirsty in the slightest, just two poor people dragged kicking and screaming into someone else’s mess

      • Minxx says:

I’d understand if they made those comments when the rumors were flying. Marion made a long-winded statement, clarified things and then two days later, when nobody was bringing it up anymore, her partner makes a big, indignant rant on his IG. I say it’s opportunistic and ill-timed. When this was happening, I checked his IG and people were asking him to “do something” and “defend your woman”… nothing happened. She made a statement herself. BTW, her partner never before bothered to defend her or even mention her on his IG (he’s more into di**k jokes, skateboarding, water skiing, dubsmash, horse jumping etc. and follows a whole bunch of models on his insta). He never attended any of her events, including the Oscars (both times she was nominated she attended with a friend). He is the father of her child but he’s not a good guy just because he made one statement to defend HIS manhood and get himself some publicity.

      • Meg D says:

The rumours are very much still flying. I bet any money they’re still being mobbed by paps and their phones are still ringing 24/7.

It’s extremely naïve to assume that a massive worldwide gossip scandal just goes away overnight.

Just because some random member of the public thousands of miles away is “bored” and thus no longer looking at all the headlines, doesn’t mean that gossip and all the harassment that creates it doesn’t exist.

This is the exact polar opposite to thirsty. If they were thirsty it would be the easiest thing in the world for them to sell a cover story to People or similar. One tiny online comment on his own personal account (where people have to actively look for it) is a positive model of restraint.

      • Bridget says:

@minxx: it’s been 6days since Jolie filed for divorce. It’s entirely appropriate timing for him to bring this up now.

      • Sasha says:

“I’d understand if they made those comments when the rumors were flying”

After Marion’s statement even here some posters kept saying but she didn’t say specifically “I didn’t have sex with Brad Pitt” a la president Clinton, and so to them her denial wasn’t valid. Canet had to come out and back her up.

    • Cran says:

@QQ if I understand your logic you find Marion and Guillaume “thirsty” because they are responding to comments directed at THEM through the media and fans regarding the paternity of THEIR child as well as the fidelity of THEIR relationship? How exactly is this none of his business? It’s most certainly none of yours. It’s most certainly none of mine. Your comment is thirsty compared to his because, again following your logic, “Umm…did we ask you?”

    • Meg D says:

Ummm… yeah how dare someone think the world’s press printing vindictive and damaging lies about them is any of their business!!

What a bizarre and fame-hungry thing, to rebut lies being told about you!

Obviously people very much do care. I have friends who have been tangentially involved in far smaller UK tabloid stories and have literally been unable to leave their homes because of all the paps, had the press repeatedly phoning their work (ordinary office job) which seriously damaged their careers, etc. There’s no way this global firestorm isn’t having a MAJOR impact on their day to day lives. One tiny little online comment is a remarkably restrained response.

    • Merritt says:

Once people tried to drag Marion into everything with Angelina and Brad, it became a bad PR situation for Marion and Guillaume. If he hadn’t said anything, people would have dissected that too.

  2. Shambles says:

    French Patrick Dempsey

    • Moon says:

Now that you’ve said it I can’t un see it. He really does look like Patrick Dempsey here.

    • sunny says:

Shambles that has been my name for him for years… So glad you see it too!

    • Atlima says:

He”s like the plainer, nerdier version of Dempsey.
I’m not impressed by his comments on the situation , he should have just said nothing.

Me thinks thee doth protest too much!
This dude is thirsty for some US , World publicitity!

  3. anonymous says:

good for him to defend wife and his family !

  4. iseepinkelefants says:

I live in Paris. I have never heard a French person say “haters” so it’s weird to see it brought up in their translations. What about those posters from last week who brought up alleged affairs? I don’t hear those rumors, I don’t hang out in university SciencePo circles, but it was interesting to hear so much gossip regarding these two and their open relationship allegedly.

    • IseeParis says:

I hear it quite often and heard it most at Uni, I think it comes from the “Haters gonna hate” meme which was/is popular among students. I thought it was also commonly used in English…

    • Val says:

Yeah I’ve never heard the word “haters” in French, definitely an American translation of something.
What I always find interesting is how people in France seem to detest Marion and think she is pretentious and not so smart, but then internationally she gets marketed as this super intelligent French star.

      • IseeParis says:

Well it’s really strange because I have often heard it, for example “C’est des haters” meaning “they are haters” when someone is very critical of something you do. Maybe it’s only in some part of the population who likes to mix French and English (Franglish as it is called) haha…

      • freebunny says:

Young people spending lots of time on Internet may use “haters”, but it’s not part of the common french.

      • IseeParis says:

Though you can see on Guillaume Canet’s Instagram that he did not use the word “haters” , he said something like “the hate of some internet users who feel stronger behind their keyboards…”

      • IseeParis says:

Exactly what I meant freebunny 🙂

      • Em' says:

I also noticed that they both used the term which is weird for people their age.
It’s really more a teenage slang, non ?
I don’t think I have ever heard someone use the French translation : “haïsseur”. “T’es trop un haïsseur” would have a nice ring to it though 🙂

      • Val says:

Uh, yeah I guess it depends on your entourage… Most of the people I hang with are from the banlieues so its mostly verlan and other slang, not usually Franglish! lol! (It reminds me of Norman’s ‘Bilingue’ sketch)

    • Lyonnaise says:

I work at a Uni, I hear it rarely and often just as a joke. I read his Instagram and the only word I think that could be translated into haters is “certains”, which, as an American who speaks French as a second language, I would translate into “certain people”. So yes Kaiser, I think this is just a strange translation.

    • Lapa says:

I’m french, I use the word “haters” or in french “rageux”, it doesn’t surprise me at all.
But in his statement he doesn’t say “haters”, he say : “la haine de certains internautes”, it means something like “the hate of some web users”.

  5. LannisterForever says:

    Why the “…I guess.”?

They both denied it, what do you need – a formal denial from Brad too?

  6. PrincessMe says:

I feel really bad for Marion (and them as a couple, in general). It must suck to get pulled into other people’s drama because you worked with someone. People have been making pronouncements about there being an affair, a possible pregnancy, the paternity of her child and on it goes. If they don’t nip this in the bud, it’s true; and if they do deny, people say well why did you have to comment, it’s none of your business. I mean, really?
I would hate to be in her position. I’m close (enough) with some of my male, married coworkers. I would hate to be dragged into their divorce by nosy people who think they know what’s happening in other people’s lives because a coworker has given me a ride home or we’ve been seen laughing and chatting.

  7. Crox says:

It must suck being her right now. She got dragged into a story she is neither connected to nor she can influence in any way. And it’s most likely the biggest tabloid story of the year.

It certainly didn’t help that she started showing, but nothing was made official yet, and then when Brangie split the rumours of Marion’s alleged pregnancy with Brad started emerging. And now it turns out she is pregnant.

I think that there will always be a rumour or two that the kid is Brad’s. People love a good conspiracy. I wonder will there be a paternity test just to put things to rest?

    • Luca76 says:

People that read Cdan and Blind gossip will always think he’s the dad. They’ll never admit those stories are bs.

      • Bridget says:

“But I read it on Blind Gossip so it must be true”

Those are also the people who are convinced that Darren Aronofsky is the father of not one but both of Natalie Portman’s children, all on the basis of BG.

  8. freebunny says:

He says “the hate of some people”, which the journalist translate with “hater”.
It sounds very normal in french.

  9. pix says:

I still have suspicions that she and Brad had an affair. Call me a skeptic.

    • Minxx says:

I do too. And this is why AJ got so pissed. But the baby is not Pitt’s.

    • Cali says:

And maybe AJ had suspicions that this baby could be Brad’s…. The whole thing is odd. I think there is a ton going on behind the scenes that we’ll never, ever know (as with 99% of celebrities).

    • Carmen says:

I think she’d be angry but I don’t think she’d leave and take the kids. There’s been no evidence that he’s been seeing Cotillard since the movie wrapped and that was four months ago. Some people want to think he actually left Angie for Cotillard the way he dumped Aniston for Angie.

    • Val says:

It would be so juicy though.

    • Atlima says:

I still think an affair happened.

  10. senna says:

This isn’t the worst defense of a relationship, and parts of it are quite sweet, but it always rubs me the wrong way when celebs complain about the stupid, baseless people who dare to be interested in the personal lives of public figures. Public interest is why these people have the careers and make the millions they do. I get that it’s hurtful to have your name associated with untrue rumors, but you don’t get to enjoy only the fun parts of celebrity because that’s what you want. It’s not that people are stupid or bored; it’s that celeb lives are packaged and marketed for public consumption, and people now expect this. Marion and Guillaume have been pretty down-lo especially in North America, but they have been associated with a very high-profile relationship thanks to Allied. IMHO it would have been better to focus on the positive – welcoming a new baby, their own happy relationship, their own opportunities and privileges – than calling people names.

  11. Georgia says:

Not the point, but Marion hair is GOALS!

  12. YesIsaidIt says:

I’m sure Brad started the rumors because it’s less damaging to be a cheater than a child abuser. I’m sure he would’ve rather have people think that had to be the reason for Angelina leaving him.

I really don’t think Angelina cared if he was with other people as long as he was decent to the kids when he actually saw them but he couldn’t do that because he’s a lowlife.

  13. Carmen says:

I noticed that the people who were crowing karma, karma, karma and how you get them is how you lose them, have been strangely silent now that it’s been established that karma had nothing to do with the breakup.

  14. Amelie says:

Haters was a translation of English language media from Canet’s French Instagram post. He states “la haine de certains internautes se sentant plus forts derrière un clavier” which in English directly translates to “the hatred of certain Internet users feeling braver behind a keyboard.” So no “haters” in the original French post.
