Pres. Debate Open Post: Hosted by Donald Trump’s delicate baby hands

wenn29541344

Considering every single media outlet in America has been hyping tonight’s presidential debate as the biggest political/entertainment/television event in history, CB and I thought some of you might enjoy a safe Open Post. Tonight’s Open Post hosts are an obvious one: Donald Trump’s delicate little hands. Marco Rubio got the ball rolling on insulting Trump’s tiny baby hands during the primaries, which led to some of the grosser back-and-forths during the debates. As it turns out, Donald Trump has a massive inferiority complex about his childlike hands.

As for the debate… it starts at 9 PM EST and it will air on ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox and all of the cable news networks. There’s also tons of available live streaming online, just check YouTube, CNN, Buzzfeed, etc. They will go on for 90 minutes with no commercial breaks. The debate is going down at Hofstra University and Lester Holt is tonight’s moderator. I like Holt a lot and many people feel like he’ll be pretty fair overall, and he’s unlikely to “pull a Lauer.”

The debate comes at an interesting/terrifying moment in the campaign, because most polls have Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump nearly at a dead heat nationally, with Clinton losing some important ground in the swing states. Even Nate Silver seems to be freaking out a little bit, and when Nate Silver freaks out, it’s time for everyone else to start screaming. But last week’s polls won’t make much difference if there’s a clear winner and loser in tonight’s debate. I hope to God Hillary brings her A-game. And I hope to God that every American wakes up to the fact that we cannot elect Donald Trump’s tiny hands to the White House. Please.

We’ll have coverage of the debate tomorrow, and CB and I will be tweeting some stuff tonight too. My Twitter is here at KaiseratCB. Celebitchy’s Twitter is here.

… so what are the rules for the drinking game?

Because I’m not looking at that face or listening to that voice while sober.

    • Kaiser says:

There is no drinking game because I don’t want anyone to die of alcohol poisoning.

      • lilacflowers says:

We have stars and stripes Hersheys kisses and rollos that they did for the Olympics. We haven’t quite worked out the rules yet as to what will be the trigger for eating one or the other. We’ll stay sober but might gain 10 pounds.

      • Christin says:

Despite my love of chocolate, I have no appetite tonight. Most debates have a quiet, respectful audience, yet I suspect this one will be a circus. I hope I am wrong.

      • smd says:

Exactly Kaiser! He just repeats certain stock phrases over and over again! Anxious about this debate.

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

I’m providing all finger foods tonight, Kaiser, in honor of Donald’s widdle pink fingies. Crispy quesadillas, guac with blue corn chips, petite chicken enchiladas. All Mexican dishes to thumb my nose at his bigotry toward people from south of the border. Drinks: Dos Equis and Corona with lime wedges. Anything stronger would get my friends and me trashed too soon to enjoy the proceedings.

      • Sam says:

We did a “foreign buffet” – just to stick it to xenophobia. I made some little German desserts, we did some Indian dishes, a little Arab mezze, etc. Just to remind ourselves of why Trump sucks so badly.

      • Marieeeee says:

At this point she’s content to just sit back and let him scream himself hoarse and show his panties. I’m proud of her composure. Seeing them side to side it’s painfully obvious that he’s an absolute buffoon.

        I have a winning temperament!!

        I am cackling

      • Miss Jupitero says:

I’m the gal with a pitcher of gin…..

    • Rice says:

I’m not American so I don’t know what’s in the US constitution. Can an elected president be removed from office for legitimate reasons? I ask this because IF Drumpf wins and takes up office at the WH, then does something really catastrophic to the country and/or citizens, can he be removed?

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

Yes, Rice, impeachment is possible for serious offenses — Richard Nixon comes to mind –Watergate. And Bill Clinton had impeachment charges brought against him by the Republicans in Congress.

  2. Tiffany27 says:

Y’all let me know what happens. I honestly don’t have the stomach for tonight. I cannot hear that man’s voice for 90 mins.

    • Janetdr says:

      That’s how I feel.

    • Marieeeee says:

This is exactly my problem too… I want to watch, but not certain I can deal with him for that long. His face, his voice, the stupid ass tiny pointy finger gestures, I know I won’t make it. And that’s not even taking into account the nonsense that’s sure to come out of his mouth.

    • EM says:

Consider me done with this election. I will vote for Hillary but frankly she and her campaign have totally blown it.

    • zinjojo says:

I can’t either — I can read about it in real time, but can’t watch it.

  3. Sam says:

Oh, I’m already through in the kitchen making the snacks for this one. I’ve parked my butt on the couch for this. It’s either going to go extremely well for Clinton or it’s going to destroy her. My husband has a friend at CNN and they’re actually saying the rating could potentially rival the Superbowl. But he’s convinced that tonight will pick the winner.

Since I am currently a lazy preggo, I can’t drink – but I do so wish that some bingo cards existed for this. You know, certain buzzwords the Donald is guaranteed to say:

    Benghazi
    Vince Foster
    Monica
    Whitewater
    Emails
    Putin
    Ivanka
    huge

    ..did I miss any?

  4. OSTONE says:

I cannot bring myself to watch it, but Hilary needs to kill it so she will stop losing momentum.

    • Christin says:

I wasn’t going to, but I have decided to watch it real-time and see how it goes.

From what some people are saying, one has thoroughly practiced and the other has not. Now I don’t know, but that is what they are saying. 😉

      • lilacflowers says:

Trump’s team has been putting it out that he hasn’t practiced but several days ago, Scott Brown was bragging about how he helped with debate prep.

      • Jwoolman says:

Lilacflowers – was he prepped by Scott Brown or Scott Baio?

      • lilacflowers says:

@JWoolman, together the two of them have less than one brain so there’s no real difference.

  5. lucy says:

Thank you for the safe space. This is the only outlet I will consider attending. I need the community support.

  6. KB says:

I’m visiting family in Chicago and they’re all TrumpNuts. Much more reason from my family back home in Texas. Fortunately, it’s unlikely their lunacy can turn Illinois away from blue. Unfortunately, our sanity probably can’t save Texas from going red either.

    • Trashaddict says:

KB, non-TrumpNut here. Please don’t paint Chicago with that brush. Couldn’t bear to watch the debate, but it’s been the source of some fantastic quotes lately-

  7. Little Darling says:

We are having a heat wave here in LA and between the heat and the Cheeto I’m feeling like I’m going to get ragey the moment I see his clown hands.

2016 has been a rough go so far. Maybe this crappy year will end with planning the inauguration of the first woman POTUS, which will help make up for all the other horrible shit that’s happened this year.

    • Hecate says:

I’m suffering here with you, Little Darling – both in this heat and during this debate. It just all feels like a punishment

      • Little Darling says:

It’s brutal! I’m watching in the dark, melting into the couch trying to not get totally worked up when he talks, which would only make me overheat.

        In sweaty Solidarity!

  8. Looty says:

My husband won’t watch, I feel like I want to witness history and stand by Hillary. God help us all.

  9. Jayna says:

My nerves are shot. This debate is against a reality show asshole. I am petrified Hillary will go into a coughing fit or something.

    • smd says:

Jayna, good description! I feel the exact same way my nerves are shot and I don’t think I can watch it. Hope that people will take time to listen to who has an actual plan and not someone that just makes up incredible lies as they go? Hoping Lester Holt lays down the law and give me some dang fact checking and discussion on foreign policy! Not fluff actual issues and clear cut plans on how to address the issues.

    • Christin says:

So far, so good! She is hitting her stride, and he’s fear-word-filling his time.

  10. Timbuktu says:

I don’t think I can handle watching it live. 🙁

  11. MC2 says:

Pulling up my seat now…..hoping that my mom has blood pressure medication for my father…..taking deep breaths…..hoping my mom can drive to me quickly with said medication. This might be a bumpy ride.

    • LinaLamont says:

I hope your mom has some bp med to spare for me.
All that repulsive pig is doing is yelling over Clinton, and, Holt is doing nothing to moderate.

  12. aang says:

I can’t even get angry any more. I’m just sad and tired. My father in law, who grew up in WWII Germany, and watched his father be dragged away to a camp by the Nazi’s for being a communist is voting for Trump. Because Mexicans(anyone who speaks Spanish) and Muslims. I don’t think he has ever even met a Muslim. And we have every few Mexicans in our area of NY. Lots of Puerto Ricans. I don’t think he cares to know the difference. And try convincing him Puerto Ricans are as American as any other citizen. He can’t see the similarities between Trump and Hitler. And if I try to tell him to substitute Muslim for Jew and Trump for Hitler he becomes enraged. Oh, and “Not that many Jews died in camps. ‘ONLY’ about one million. They exaggerate the numbers.”
    Please feel sorry for me.

    • Christin says:

You have my sympathy. I truly don’t understand the blinders some supporters have. His own words are terrible, plus he has ZERO elected office experience.

    • MC2 says:

I feel so sorry for you. Trump slept with a book of Hitler’s speeches for inspiration for Jimminy Christmas sake! Talking to someone that can’t see the connection to others must be infuriating. Hugs to you.

    • smd says:

Aang I hear you, my inlaws think he is great and I just cant. They say since he’s an outsider and a great businessman “snort” he can’t be bought and he’ll tell all those long time politicians to go to hell. Geez, it kinda seems important that a president can compromise to get things done, that they value all people as equal and they are measured in their responses. I’m worried! And they think Hillary is a lying she devil. I’ve basically stopped any visits or events with them the last 6 months due to their fervent views on this election.

      • Little Darling says:

A woman I know (who is INCREDIBLY religious) said that she was glad that God had given us such an upstanding Christian candidate. I kindly pointed out a lot of non Christian things he’s done and she said that that was all before “he found God.” I then pointed out that some of these things happened like last week and she said it was all media spin. So I then pointed out to her that everything wrong he did before the election was because he hadn’t found God and everything after was media spin, and by that logic he could do no wrong. She then (un-sarcastically) congratulated me for seeing the light and getting past my liberal bias.

      • Little Darling says:

Pretty sure I saw clown hands shaking when he sipped the water.

Does he even know how to succinctly answer a question? I can’t follow him. I hear country, blah blah China, Mexico, take back our country, are we talking money yet? Like, what?? Take one thought and go with it.

      • SusanneToo says:

This “outsider” crap!! I need a crown, so tomorrow I’m cancelling my dental appointment and calling a welder. That’ll show Dr. Know It All!

      • Justjj says:

The birth certificate. For the love of baby Jesus. I especially liked the run on word salad… Referring to cyber warfare as “the cyber” and nuclear arms as “the nuclear”. Is English his first language? Hillary should have spoken up more. It’s so hard because it’s like watching Barney the dinosaur debate Bill Gates. How do you argue with that? Hillary was dumbing it down as much as she could. My problem area: race relations segment. Did anyone else feel like at one point discussion of criminal activity seemed synonymous with race relations? There were some iffy moments but I think Hillary is just trying to tone it down for the illiterate masses.

    • mayamae says:

I’m convinced that there’s nothing, literally nothing this nut can say that would turn away his fans. It’s actually frightening. The Trump signs are increasing and his polls are increasing because Trump is normalizing xenophobia, rabid nationalism, and white supremacist sympathy. David Duke himself said Trump is signaling us (white supremacists), and not one Trump supporter questions their support?

Hitler’s book at his bedside for years. Citing Mussolini’s tyranny in an admiring way. Praising, and even doubling down in that praise, of Putin’s “strength” and leadership. Hitler, Mussolini, Putin, and white supremacy code – Trump is clearly showing what type of leader he will be. He’s making no attempts to hide it. Why don’t his fans care?

      • SilverUnicorn says:

        “Why don’t his fans care?”
Because many like to live in denial and many others never experienced the horrors of Nazism and fascism.

  13. Diana says:

I live miles and miles away in a small port city in the middle east and I’m sh*itting my pants at the thought of a president trump. America …FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

    • smd says:

Diana those of us in the States are just as worried and so saddened. 25 years from now how will his rise to power and popularity be explained?

  14. Lahdidahbaby says:

Announced earlier tonight: They had to build up Hill’s podium an even foot (he’s 6’3″ and she’s 5’3″) so their height would be equal…but they just took their places and hers doesn’t look that built up to me.

  15. MC2 says:

    Shout out to equal pay!

  16. Lilacflowers says:

He made a very sour face when she brought up equal pay for women.

  17. Christin says:

Is it my TV color settings, or is he orange-free? She looks fresher in the side-by-side. He was glaring / squinting the whole time she spoke.

  18. Sam says:

Is he…on something? He sounds so…sedate.

    • Jayna says:

I noticed that. I guess Kellyanne, his campaign manager, is his horse-whisperer and calmed him down before the debate by cooing in his ear and batting her eyelashes at him. He listens to her. He will rev up as he goes along. He’s just calming his nerves in the beginning.

    • Little Darling says:

He is trying really hard to stay normal. You can tell. But it’s still very early in the night. This man can’t stay calm and poised for any length of time.

    • SusanneToo says:

Not any more – he’s shouting, interrupting and gesticulating.

    • M says:

      Except for the constant sniffing…

    • Size Does Matter says:

      Anti-bark collar under there somewhere.

  19. Onerous says:

Um, Trump’s first answer was nonsense and it’s not even over! Not good, Donald!

  20. smd says:

Oh Lilacflowers! Toasting and waving dahling🍸🍷🍹! Keep us updated too much for me to live watch, I feel like I’m going to have a panic attack. Sounds like many of us here just can’t.

  21. MC2 says:

    #trumpeduptrickledown love it!

  22. MC2 says:

    He can’t not interrupt….

  23. Aang says:

She looks great. Strong, healthy and young!

  24. Jayna says:

Trump is sniffling Ha-ha. Who’s sick now?

  25. Onerous says:

And she did it! Got right under his skin with the comment about daddy’s money! Woo hoo!

  26. G says:

I have only been watching for this current jobs question. Has Trump answered a single question? And will this moderator call him out on it? He just lets Trump talk over everyone.

    • Little Darling says:

As far as I can see, he is not capable of answering questions. He maybe kind of starts and then just steamrolls the talking point far away and circles around to his own points, whether or not they answer the question.

  27. Jayna says:

    He’ s screaming over her.

How is that allowed? This is how he won in the primaries . They allow him to shout over others and interrupt. and he won.

Hillary needs to call him out for shouting over her when it’s her turn.

He’s uncontrollable. It’s how he wins the deplorables over

    • Little Darling says:

I know!! I’m ragey and hot at the fact that no one seems to regulate this guy. Why not?

      • Jayna says:

This was my fear. I can’t believe Lester didn’t call him out for interrupting her right and left while it was her turn.

      • Sam says:

Ratings! The more he yells, the more a spectacle he is. The networks are salivating over this guy, trust me.

My husband is on the phone with a reporter friend who just said (on speaker) “Somewhere, right now, a broadcast news exec is having an orgasm over this.”

    • MC2 says:

She needs to keep asking for the clock to start again. If they don’t allow this in football how can this be allowed here!

    • Christin says:

Nearly 30 minutes into this, and Holt finally tells him it’s her two minutes. And he interrupts both HC and Holt within those two minutes. He’s just running on fear mongering and distractions.

Here we go with the tax return topic…

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

I thought that too! At one point I posted that she should turn to him when he was hollering during her turn and yell STOP, but Sam pointed out to me that if a woman did that she would be considered shrill, a bitch, all the words that are used against women competing in a man’s world. It’s true, and that really sucks.

  28. Jayna says:

    Fvck off, Donald

  29. SusanneToo says:

Now the tax audit lie. Call him on it!!!!!!!

    • MC2 says:

Come on Lester- get that bone!

    • Christin says:

And refusing to pay a fair share of taxes and stiffing contractors. An architect he allegedly refused to pay is in the audience, she says.

He’s already sounding a tad winded. And sniffling.

  30. Little Darling says:

OMG my 13 year old kid just walked in asked if it was SNL or live , and then he said, so he really yells like that?

    Hahaha.

  31. LinaLamont says:

Welp…. the only time he shut up while she was talking is when she called him on hiding his tax returns.

  32. Kittahlove83 says:

Clinton rightfully called him out on his tax returns. While HRC does look calm and put together. Trump’s make-up artist deserve a bonus, he is a realitively normal shade of human. His refusal to answer questions is maddening

  33. Melisande says:

Ooooohhhhhh boy. The husband wants to listen to the debate, so I’m streaming, but holy cats. It is hella difficult to listen to Trump’s BS. Seriously. His comment about how much money he made the last year and how if he’d known 15-20 years ago he’d make that much… made me want to puke. And he thinks it’s that kind of thinking we need? SWINDLING thinking is what we need??? UGH… this man. And I don’t even want to get into the fact checking.

  34. Jayna says:

She came at him great with Donald not releasing his tax returns.

  35. Jayna says:

    And he pivots.

  36. HeyThere! says:

His beady eyes while he’s drinking water and glaring at her while she talks….lol that’s all. Can’t take either one seriously.

    • SusanneToo says:

Just look at that ugly, sour face. On top of all of his other defects who would want that face representing us?

    • Camille says:

And whats with him sniffing all the time. Did he snort something that didn’t agree with him.

  37. Lahdidahbaby says:

She’s calling him out on all the workers he has stiffed — GOOD!

  38. lisa says:

i think he looks and sounds like a joke

but i know there are people watching this right now thinking he is amazing (i guess i should say tremendous)

    my god I’m scared

  39. Apples says:

“I will release my taxes when she releases her 30,000 emails” or “I’ll show you mine if you show me yours.” – D.Trump, a 4 year old presidential candidate

    • Jwoolman says:

Her e-mails have all been recovered to the satisfaction of the FBI and nothing damning was found. She didn’t do anything special to prevent recovery. (Deleting a file just tells the computer it can reuse the space, the right software can recover the data. I used to do this myself even months later when I accidentally deleted something I needed.)

  40. Lahdidahbaby says:

I think with him butting in and monopolizing this “debate,” she shouldn’t just stand there smiling when he goes on and on., drowning her out when it’s HER turn! I think she should turn to him at these times and bark “STOP!”

  41. Apples says:

I cannot even imagine being married to a man like that – he is revolting. Simply revolting.

  42. Little Darling says:

See, she’s asked a question, she repeats the question and then bullet points her answer and plan. That’s how you do it Donnie!

    • smd says:

He is incapable of that little Darling. A fact that should upset mote people but it doesn”t. I want him to blunder big, either freeze totally or so something so foul even his ardent supporters would say “What?”

      • SusanneToo says:

There is absolutely nothing so foul or even criminal he could say that would turn off his most ardent supporters.

  43. MC2 says:

The answer to issues with race relations in our country (was that the exact question) is law & order?! WTF?!

  44. SusanneToo says:

    What a f*****g, disgusting POS.

  45. Aang says:

A very against police judge??? WTF? Can he speak English please?

  46. MC2 says:

She called out how crappy mandatory sentences are! Woo hoo!

  47. Little Darling says:

You know what else I’ve prepared for? I’ve prepared to be president.

    BOOOOOOM. Atta girl Hillary.

  48. Lahdidahbaby says:

What a prick. His revisionist Birther bullsh*t is shameful!

  49. MC2 says:

    Birther——is he unraveling?

    • Little Darling says:

I’m wondering very seriously if he is on some type of cold medicine. He’s clearly suffering from a cold, I wouldn’t be shocked if he had a fever. That could be why his color is better today and not so orange.

      • smd says:

But he is in perfect health always! NY times is doing a live feed with several reporters commentaries and that I can do.

      • Jwoolman says:

He’s seemed to have a respiratory infection for quite a while, so it’s not something too recent. I thought he was uncharacteristically quiet about Hillary’s lack of a press conference to announce an antibiotic prescription, and wondered if he was quiet because he had recently been prescribed one also. Even though a cold is viral, secondary bacterial infection can make it worse and for a man his age, a doctor might have given him antibiotics either as a precaution or because he was already showing signs of a bacterial infection. Or (gasp!) he might have also been diagnosed with bacterial pneumonia since that seems to be going around in political circles.

  50. Jayna says:

    Pivot, Donald.

No, Donald, you didn’t accept the birth certificate. You went on for years after making tweets about it..

    • Kittahlove83 says:

I think the Mr may suffer a stroke – he’s absolutely livid with the things Trump is saying

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

Year after year! How can he think we don’t remember all the years he insisted on that shameful Birther lie? AFTER he now claims he KNEW Obama was born in the US! He’s like the fecking Wizard of Oz standing behind his little curtain and bellowing like some great and powerful being.

Sadly for him, the curtain is open and we can see you in there, Trump, bleating like a damn goat.

    • MC2 says:

I am actually shocked that he admitted that he knew Obama was born in the USA once he saw the certificate…..in 2011….wow!

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

If he did know, then he’s admitting what a dishonest, cynical, opportunistic liar he was for repeating the Birther accusation for another 4 + years!

  51. phlyfiremama says:

    Trainwreck. They both suck.

  52. LinaLamont says:

    “Uncle”.
I have to hit the mute button every time that POS talks/yells. There isn’t enough booze, pot or bp med in the world for me to get through this.

  53. Lahdidahbaby says:

I’d love to see a tally of his talk-time tonight compared to hers! He has gone WAY the feck over!

    • Jayna says:

I agree. He got more time than her. The debate ran over 90 minutes because he talked over his time or came back in again.

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

Yep, and I hope they were keeping a tally of his talk time compared to hers. Interesting that with all his bluster and blab, she was the stronger one by the end.

With Trump, Less is More for sure, but he will never understand that because he loves himself so much. And that might be his downfall.

        One can hope, anyway.

  54. Matahari says:

“I have a much better temperament than she does” – The Cheeto

  55. smd says:

Susanne too, I know and that is exactly what blows my mind! And why I don’t even try having rational discussions with his supporters, they don’t care about facts. Since when is fact checking bad?

  56. Arpeggi says:

“I have the best judgment and the best temperament”

Yeah, sure you do you sniffling cheeto

  57. Lahdidahbaby says:

I loved to hear Hillary stop the debate to reassure the allies after Trump’s irresponsible, reactionary talk all season long! She sounded presidential reassuring the allies, and by contrast he looked like he had a screw loose.

Well, of course he did — because he does.

  58. noodle says:

well, as long as you call shawn hannity. he’s gonna tell you what a swell guy Donald is.
    Hillary looks sharp.
    that’s all i’ve got.

ETA: OMG. Donald is 5 years old

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

Yup, 5 years old. The whole debate he was all *I know you are but what am I* — total sandbox talk!

  59. Sam says:

Okay, when he said “we’ve become a third world country” my Father in Law (who grew up in a slum in India) actually choked on his drink and needed my husband to pound on his back. Thanks Trump, you almost killed a guy with grossly negligent hyperbole.

  60. Cheryl says:

HOW IS THIS RACE SO CLOSE??? HOW DOES THIS GUY HAVE HALF THIS COUNTRY BELIEVING IN HIM??

    I am so sad.

    • bonzo says:

He’s got much of the conservative, evangelical Christian vote, which is huge. They care mostly about abortion and lower taxes. Most don’t like him, but they despise Hilary more and will vote against her.

Mark my words, if Trump wins, it’ll be because of the evangelical voting block.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

It really is sad and discouraging. And fecking hard to understand, much less believe.

CHERYL that’s what terrifies me too. How can ANYONE think this guy is capable of leading the country? He’s psychopathic liar, a racist, a terrible person, a terrible businessman, and BIGLY ignorant. He’s also involved with a lot of business deals in Russia and other countries, which are clearly a conflict of interest. We haven’t seen his taxes OR heard from a real doctor about his health. How did he get this far?

Not a single straight answer from that nasty, lying, anus-mouth fool.

  63. Little Darling says:

Thanks for keeping me company y’all!!

    Cheers!

  64. MC2 says:

Do people think she did well? I am biased….but could she have turned some tides?!

    • Little Darling says:

I heard them say that he probably didn’t lose any of his people.

ETA they’re definitely saying he started okay and then clearly got rattled. Also talking about his rude faces. But mostly people won’t leave him if they already supported him.

She’s getting positive reviews for being cool, focused and on point.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

I thought she stopped the clock so beautifully when she stepped outside the debate perimeters to reassure our Allies that the crazy talk they’ve heard [from Trump, it was clear she meant] all thru this campaign season has NO basis in reality in terms of US policy, and assured them that we will stand with them.

    • SusanneToo says:

I thought she did very well, but it depends on who was watching. One of my local stations asked three college students if they were going to watch. Their responses:
      “No.”
“I’m not really interested and I have homework.”
“I’ve got better things to do.”

Jeez! I don’t understand that attitude. Or the attitude of why vote, it doesn’t matter either way. It does matter, fool!

      • Jwoolman says:

They can watch it later on the net if they get interested, probably when they hear people talking about it. We no longer have to drop everything and watch in realtime. They could have deadlines to meet, “homework” in college is a whole different level than homework in high school.

    • smd says:

Mc2, of course it depends on whose reporting but there does seem to be some consensus that Trump didn’t do what he set out to which was to gain more female votes, minority voters and middle of the road conservatives. He didn’t go crazy but he slipped up majorly in a couple of areas. Most noticeably, he almost totally avoided immigration yet that is one of his key cornerstones of his entire campaign. Clinton looked calm, she stayed on topic and wasn’t dismissive which would have just riled up her detractors. Lester Holt however was not a strong moderator!

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

I agree, smd, he let Trump trample all over him. He had no authority and thus he lost control again and again.

      • MC2 says:

I agree and if we just go on what they both set out to do and if they did that- I think she wins. Nothing shocking or super surprising happened but there were some nuggets. I am interested to see if people latch on to him admitting that for years he lied about thinking Obama was not American because……..

I agree with the consensus that nobody that supported either side will likely change their vote but I am hoping that some people on the fence will be so disgusted by him that they vote to keep him out of the white house. I liked his idea of living near the white house but not in it. What a loon!

      • lilacflowers says:

On the very first question of the night, he made a sour face, complete with eyeroll, on the subject of equal pay. And everybody on the planet knows that his comment about Clinton not having the “look” to be President refers to the fact that she doesn’t look like she has a penis and testicles, not his “stamina” crap, which didn’t help his case either because it was also sexist as hell. So, no, no female who believes she deserves to be paid the same as her co-workers or who believes she should have equal opportunities would be swayed by him last night.

    • Moose says:

This reminds me of Kerry v Dubya in some ways. The people who will vote for Trump are attracted to his “normal-ness” and whether or not they want to get a beer with him. Kerry (and H. Clinton) were both very poised and “presidential” but a lot of people don’t respond to that.

    • Kate says:

She did fine, but Trump got what he wanted again. Everyone’s talking about him and what she said about him, no ones talking about her or her policies. It’s how he’s gotten this far, by making other candidates seem like afterthoughts.

To really win she needed to break through with a performance that overshadowed him, and she didn’t. He still got all the attention. It doesn’t matter if it’s negative attention, his campaign is fueled by negative attention.

He won’t have lost any of his voters, and she won’t have lost any of hers, but the race is tightening. She really needed to pick up some of the people who want to sit this one out, and I don’t think she did that here. Her campaign is still basically ‘Well, I’m better than that guy’, which while true, isn’t an enticing position to take. She needs to show people she’s a great choice, not just in comparison to Trump, and she’s not managing it.

    • Carmen says:

The NY Times is saying her chances of winning the election went up several points after the debate, so I think she won over some undecideds.

Woot! Team Hillary! She hung back and let him dig his own grave. Let’s not forget this is the first of several debates. She looked like the cat that got the cream by the end. Also, my friends and I turned it into a drinking game and my gosh am I sloshed right now! 😉

  69. aang says:

Lester Holt needs to take a seat next to Matt Lauer until he learns how long 10 seconds is.

    • LinaLamont says:

Yeah. Was gonna say something earlier, but, didn’t want to waste my breath… but, since you commented,…
I agree with you. Holt was abysmal.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

Ex-fecking-zactly! That was so pathetic, and the end result was that Trump got to talk WAY more than Hillary did.

The up-side us that it allowed Trump to hang himself by the tongue. Still, it wasn’t fair — but Lester was just too weak to put his foot down on that tongue.

  71. Moose says:

The one thing I will say is, Clinton says that she wants to rebuild the economy by taxing the wealthy. I don’t know that I believe she will do that. I think that’s the typical Democrat line but ya know, does that ever actually happen? Doesn’t really seem like it.

    • SusanneToo says:

Well, we’re pretty sure that the Republicans won’t.

    • Sam says:

The problem is that to change tax rates, that has to come from Congress. She can be all for it, but if Congress won’t do it, there is little the President can do.

    • Kittahlove83 says:

Well, sadly, that’s when I felt Trump was accurate when he said that’s typical politician speak. But clearly he doesn’t have any real plan either. I just felt meh about the whole thing.

    • Jwoolman says:

Taxes on the wealthy were reduced by Republicans, everybody had survived fine with the higher rates. But you can’t stimulate the economy with government programs if there is no source of the extra money needed (although we would have plenty if the military budget, doubled by Reagan, were restored to a saner level), so tax rates really do need to be restored. Even the IRS has complained of being so underfunded that it can’t effectively go after tax cheats (thanks to Republicans) and Medicare staffing cuts have made it very difficult to help people get what they need.

A major thing to keep money available for helpful programs really is just staying out of pointless wars. The Gulf Wars were very expensive and resulted in cutbacks on veterans benefits directly (both vets of past wars and people coming back from current ones) but also significantly increased the national debt and therefore the interest payments. It can take decades to pay off a war because of the debt incurred. We will be in even worse shape after just four years of President Trump than even after eight years of President Bush the Second. And we were in quite a mess, Obama pulled out a few miracles. Of course if the Trumpster starts WWIII, we’re toast. He could make large portions of this country and the rest of the world uninhabitable at worst and unsuitable for cultivation at best. He really doesn’t understand what he’s playing with, and I don’t know if whoever is trying to control him is much better (or will be able to control him). This is why you don’t elect erratic people like Trump as POTUS if you have half a brain in your head.

  73. Nic919 says:

Hillary won this by a mile. Anyone watching that and thinking Trump can run a country has mental issues. He was more incoherent and idiotic than any other candidate in televised debate history.

    • Kittahlove83 says:

Yeah, but the point was to win more voters to your side… I’m not sure either accomplished that.

      • Jwoolman says:

I think Hillary actually did bring over some undecideds. We’ll see what happens in the polls in a few days. Some polls and at least one focus group (run by a conservative) including just undecided voters indicate that she was declared the winner by them by a landslide. I think a lot of people were put off by his rudeness, trying to grab the floor after his time was up and talking over her. She just continued to act like an adult ignoring the toddler in tantrum mode.

I wouldn’t expect Trump’s core supporters to shift regardless of what he said or did.

  74. Persephone says:

  76. Incredulous says:

So, Donald admitted to racism, tax-dodging and misogyny in a presidential debate and then stated he wants to run American foreign policy as a protection racket and insulted Rosie O’ Donnell on live broadcast-around-the-world presidential debate.

Oh, and his disgusted sigh when Hillary said “Black communities”. Also, his admission of not paying people and then whining that other countries don’t pay enough. Also also, the Republican candidate for the position of President of the United States hasn’t thought about NATO. Also also also, he characterized America as some sort of Mad Max land full of roaming gangs (Blacks, Hispanics) who shoot lots of people and his property in Chicago and Stop and Frisk is constitutional (apparently) and 4000 people were shot in Chicago this year, wait, 3000 people and…

    And…

    And…

Oh yeah, he’s rich, you know, really rich. Don’t ever doubt his riches, you filthy poors.

His comment about ‘Mericuh needing to be better at cyber[ing] was comedy gold, though, and I laughed for about three minutes.

The Republican party is not getting anyone in the White House before 2032 at the earliest, are they?

  77. Jayna says:

No one has brought up one of the most mind-boggling comments of the night. That is when he brought up how in one of the richest enclaves in the country, Palm Beach, he allowed rich minorities to join his country club. That was his response to Hillary bringing up his discriminatory housing practices years ago. i was on the floor.

    • Christin says:

I was floored by that comment as well. There was so much to
parse, not to mention body language. There is enough material for a dozen commercials.

Oh, and when he whined about her ads about him, I wanted her to respond, “The ones in your own words? Those?”

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

      YES!

  78. minx says:

It wasn’t even close. She pulverized him.

  79. Carmen says:

Now he’s claiming he lost because his mic was defective.

Something sure is defective, but it wasn’t the mic.

    • Jwoolman says:

He’s used that excuse before when asked in a phone interview about David Duke, the Klan guy. He claimed he couldn’t hear the interviewer very well, but his answer indicated that he certainly did hear the question loud and clear. He said that he didn’t know who David Duke or white supremacists were. But we have an interview with him quite a few years ago where he had a lot to say about David Duke, whom he had apparently met at some point, when Duke was also running for some local office. He knew who Duke was and what he stood for and thought he had no business being in politics. Trump has swung 180 degrees more recently. He really needs to learn that when he’s recorded saying one thing, he can’t deny it later.

    • Ankhel says:

Perhaps he’s talking about “Mick”, the least stupid and boorish voice in his head? “Brad”, “Dick” and “Chadster” probably locked him up somewhere ages ago, after “the Don” hit him with a lacrosse stick…

  80. naomipaige says:

I couldn’t stomach to watch last night, but some on-line polls say Hilary took the lead. Is that right? Did anybody watch?

    • Tate says:

I watched. No amount of spin can make Trump look like the winner. He really tried to hold it together and seem like a measured, calm candidate. That didn’t last for long. By the end he was speaking incoherent sentences, making crazy faces and being, well… Trump.

In contrast, Hillary looked and sounded polished. She had a command of facts and policies. She never let Trump get under her skin and showed a sense of humor when she needed to. Will this change the die hard Trump supporters minds?? No. But any serious undecided voter that watched that mess should be voting for Hillary now.

  81. Janet R says:

Kaiser, thanks you so much for doing this! I couldn’t bear to watch but by reading comments I was just informed enough that I could sleep : )
