Duchess Kate in Sentaler & Carolina Herrera in Canada: cool coats or meh?

wenn29606559

The Duke and Duchess are now far enough north where they can no longer wear breezy late-summer clothes. These photos are from their visit to Yukon on Wednesday, where they traveled to Carcross and Whitehorse. It was this second stop to Carcross where Kate wore her first Canadian designer of the trip! Kate light grey-blue alpaca-wool sweater coat in these photos is by Sentaler, which is apparently one of Sophie Trudeau’s favorite Canadian designers. A lot is made of Kate’s collection of coats, usually coatdresses or long coats that she simply never takes off for royal events, but I tend to think that at this point, Kate’s taste in coats is too conservative. That being said, I like this sweater-coat. It’s something I would pick up in a shop… if it was on sale, because it retails for $920. My biggest qualm about this outfit: the combo of black jeggings with brown cowboy boots. Just say NO, people.

Below, I’m including some photos of Kate in a bright red coat by Carolina Herrera in Whitehorse (a gold-rush town). The color is great on her, but I’ve always said she should wear more red. This is pretty basic theme dressing for Kate though – she just went with the “theme” of wearing lots of red, for Canada. As for this coat… it’s okay, but Kate’s Button Obsession is getting worse, right? And for some reason, she loves it when buttons are placed on coats right at nipple-level.

    Really beautiful in both outfits.

    • Megan says:

Check out the shoes with the red coat. Not nude, and they have details!

      • graymatters says:

I love the shoes, and I understand the clutch with them. Somehow, though, the clutch doesn’t work with the coat, but the shoes do. Maybe because the shoes have that red detail and aren’t right next to the coat.

      • Hazel says:

Finally! Interesting shoes! Agree about the clutch with that coat, and the coat’s weird button placement– especially considering it doesn’t fit her right, the coat pulls at the buttons & the left side seems to hit higher than the right.
As for the grey coat, I thought at first it was a temperley London wraparound sweater. Very similar to some of TL’s, particularly those sleeves. And as for those sleeves–I’d look like a heavyweight boxer in those. You’d need a skinny set of arms to pull that off.

      • kaiko says:

Oh heavens to Betsy, they are SHOES!!!!! I doubt the woman even picked them out herself! Is this really all we have to say about Kate Middleton? Her shoes are cool?
        Bar meet floor…nuff said. She’s a joke. I’m out.

      • Hazel says:

Kaiko: yep, that’s all I’ve got. What else is there to say about this privileged, clueless woman

    • mellie says:

Agree. Both are really pretty, and the boots and shoes are fab too. She is ‘stepping’ up her shoe game!

    • Maum says:

I know!!!!! At last someone told her that she didn’t need to nude or match.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

Yes. I think she’s been styled better on this trip than ever before. Thumbs up on both coats, and yes, she looks fab in red.

    • minx says:

Yes, I love those coats. Very nice.

    • ravensdaughter says:

I love how she mixes it up when she visits Canada. Formal outfits mixed with posh country.
Oh, to be so slender. She can wear anything….

    • Lexie says:

Love them both! She’s looking great this whole trip!

  2. Shambles says:

Her hair is up! She looks nice.

    • Goats on the Roof says:

She’s worn her hair back a lot on this trip, and I think it makes her look so much more put together.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

She does, Shambles! It’s such a classic look, and what a welcome evolution of her personal style!

  3. Lora says:

    I hate both outfits

  4. Lainey says:

Love the sweater coat, one of the few things she’s worn that I’d love. The red coat is boring. How hard would it have been to find a Canadian designer to make it instead of American? She’s meant to be promoting Britain and Canada but wears American again. Just the other day they were praising her for repeating and thriftiness and in one day wears two coats that are over a grand each. 🙃😐

    • LadyMTL says:

I love the Sentaler sweater too; I would buy it if I could afford anything from the line to begin with (the fall – winter coats are soooo gorgeous). I agree though that it would be nice if Kate wore more Canadian designers on this trip, and moved away a bit from the red coat / red dress / red everything theme she seems to have chosen.

    • Zimmerman says:

Am suffering from some serious sweater coat envy. It’s also available in some other nice colors! If only, it were pocketbook friendly!!!!

    • Nic919 says:

And she already has so many red coats she could be wearing. So much waste. And the buttons at nipple level look stupid on her.
At least the sweater coat is Canadian and promotes the frickin country she is vacationing at taxpayer expense.

  5. LuluPolly says:

Are you saying NO because they are cowboy boots or because they are brown? Brown boots and black jeggings look great together IMO.

    • Eden75 says:

I was going to say that too. I dunno, she looks just like people we see in the street everyday for a change and I think she looks great in the wine cardigan, jeans and boots.

      • LuluPolly says:

Some people hold onto the outdated fashion view/rule of never wearing brown with black. It’s silly. I have one pair of brown boots , they cost me tons of money and they look good with everything.

    • graymatters says:

I think brown and black can work, but in this case the brown is jarring against the black and gray of the whole outfit. What bugs me about the boots, though, is that they’re suede. Cowboy boots are designed for ranching and all its mucky glory; suede gets destroyed by a rainy driveway. It just makes her seem so superficial and useless. Or maybe that’s just me, projecting her apparent personality onto her clothes. I’d wear that cardi, though.

      • LuluPolly says:

I think you’re right about the style. I’m not into cowboy boots at all. The cowboy boot does not really go with her outfit or occasion.

      • Babyswans says:

Do you live anywhere cowboy boots are popular? I only ask bc if you do, then you’d know there are cowboy boots you wear with an outfit and then there are cowboy boots you wear for ranching. No way would I ever wear my Lucchese boots to work in the mud. Most western work boots are round toed. Most non work boots are pointed.

It took me decades to get on the cowboy boot train, but now I kinda love them. Except when I see grown women in cowboy boots and shorts. That’s a no & s costume.

    • Goats on the Roof says:

Just coming to say this myself. I see a lot of people mixing skinny black pants/leggings with brown riding boots this time of the year, and it’s not a bad look IMO.

    • L84Tea says:

I like the whole outfit, except I think her other boots would have looked better than cowboy boots. That’s my only complaint.

    • Scal says:

I don’t mind the whole black and brown thing, but it’s also a trick of the light-those are totally blue jeans not black.

  6. Frannydays says:

Aw they kind of look in love!

  7. Aiobhan says:

I would live in the light gray sweater coat every day.

The red one is a little too conservative for me, but it looks good on her.

    • Mel M says:

Love the grey one! I saw someone I follow on IG in it last Christmas but I think it was cream and I loved it so much. Then I looked it up and saw the price tag, so bummed. Still love it though.

  8. hnmmom says:

The picture of her in the grey sweater coat is lovely. She looks fresh-faced and happy. Tying back her hair adds a touch of subtle glamour. The best I’ve seen her in years. Love that red coat if there were no buttons on it.

  9. Anna says:

The arms on that coat give me some cartoon-robot arm vibes. but she does look great

  10. Sullivan says:

She looks pretty and natural in the grey sweater. I like it.

    • Citresse says:

Yes, Kate seems to look her best when wearing casual outfits. It makes sense when you consider the fact she has an uncanny ability to make most (not all) expensive outfits look cheap. I’m thinking in particular of when the Chinese visited HM (state visit) and she wore what looked like a t-shirt dress in red at the banquet.

  11. iralagi says:

I like the shoes. Finally she wore something that is not basic, nude and/or from LK Bennet. I hate those LK Bennet shoes.

    • Citresse says:

Yes the shoes were certainly a nice change from the stilettos. The shoes looked like something HM would wear (block heels) though HM as a young woman didn’t like her heels nearly as high as Kate’s.

  12. Morriea says:

I love the Carolina Herrera coat.
Kate is extremely thin, it shows in the jeggings or skinny jeans and cowboy boots. In close up photos the skinny jeans are loose around her knees , that’s SKINNY!

OVERWLL THE CLOTHES HAVE BEEN much better this tour, or the appropriateness of the clothing I should say, because no fly ups, no too short skirts, and hair much better.

Still I just find Kate so dull, nothing really special about her.

  13. Meow says:

God help me – she looks GREAT in that top outfit.

  14. MIssyD says:

Kate looks freshly botoxed in all these Canadian trip photos. Where are the forehead wrinkles?

    • Goats on the Roof says:

Oh, the Botox is strong with this one right now. The photos in the red coat where she’s having a big laugh but nothing from the eyebrows up moves make the work totally obvious.

      • MIssyD says:

There have been plenty of close ups as well and no wrinkles (unless all the pics have been cleaned up and photoshopped). She’s only 34… how does one get so many wrinkles? To me, 34 is still really young!

      • Who ARE These People? says:

        Smoking, sun and genetics.

    • Nikole says:

She definitely did botox. She can’t even move her forehead and near eyes too, it more freeze. But look at the last picture, on the light you can see that she got bad unsmooth skin.
to Who ARE These People? – and she loves to grinning all the time

    • kaiko says:

I’ve noticed not just the botox but her mouth and smile and the whole lower part of her face look REALLY different. Like maybe she got a few nips and tucks to decrease the Middleton jowls she was starting to sport. Her outfits are nice, but shouldn’t she always look stunning when money is no object, n’est ce pas?

    • Charlie says:

I’m not sure why all you folks are saying Botox for this trip. There are a number of photos where her forehead is quite wrinkly. It really surprised me, as I thought she’d had work done in August, the month of Royal disappearances. Scroll down here to see some wrinkles: http://royaldish.com/index.php?topic=15232.3495. I kind of wondered if she was trying to get pregnant again.

  15. Rivkah says:

Love the grey sweater- very Olivia Pope

  16. jeanne says:

What is with the touching? She has touched William several times in the exact same way that I’m convinced some of their people told them to act more affectionate in public and this is what they came up with. I’m not one of those people saying they don’t like each other. I assume they love each other but the touching to me looks so obviously orchestrated for the masses to fawn and say “look how in love they still are. She can’t keep her hands off him!”

Any thoughts or am I just reading too much into it?

    • Lisa says:

I’m with you Jeanne. Most of the time she just trails after him like a puppy and he generally looks annoyed with her. Not the case on this trip. (I’m still mad though that my tax dollars are paying for this little vacation especially given the ridiculous size of their entourage).
Also, it might be my screen but her jeggings look blue to me, not black.

    • Zimmerman says:

      @Jeanne

There are three possibilities on the touching in my opinion:

      1) you already mentioned the first
      2) the marriage is in trouble and it is a desperate Kate move
      3) She’s pregnant and craving closeness

      • Nic919 says:

Or she saw how the Trudeaus are naturally affectionate and wants to emulate them.
It seems one sided though so that makes it look worse. Both Trudeau and Sophie reciprocate the affection. Will still barely seems to acknowledge her.

      • Zimmerman says:

That’s a good one, but yeah makes her look desperate!

    • Starlight says:

I was thinking the same compare the pics anytime before there is no touchy apart from the olympics when they celebrated

    • Betti says:

Kate has always been more touchy feely than him, he clearly doesn’t like public PDA’s so this is clearly them trying to show that they are ‘still in love’ etc.. The fact that its his thigh she keeps touching does seem to indicate a more ‘sexual’ closeness than affectionate/emotional, this is something that i have done with BF’s when feeling a little ‘frisky’. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s feeling broody and wants another child.

  17. Seraphina says:

I’m not impressed. I agree she looks just like any other female walking the streets. And Kaiser, I have noticed her nipple level buttons and it drives me crazy!

    • Zimmerman says:

She may want to give an illusion of bust, but it is irksome!

    • Mezz_Dame says:

Yes, the Duchess of Buttons does live up to her moniker, but having taken sewing classes, they do tell you to line up buttons across the midline of the bust (roughly the nipped area) so the seams don’t pull apart and create a gap.

  18. The Original Mia says:

The red coat is similar to the other 10 red coats she owns. No need to purchase a brand new one, but that’s Waity. I like the grey sweater. It’s the rest that is meh. Don’t understand the grey with the black jeans and brown boots. Black cowboy boots or another sweater coat would been better. Odd pairing.

  19. JenB says:

I like her outfits! It is refreshing to see her in a different style pump. The hair looks nice too.
This pictures make me long for crisp fall weather which has yet to arrive in southeastern virginia.

  20. TeamAwesome says:

Black+brown is fab, but black, brown and grey together would not have been my first choice. That said, I want that sweater coat in all the colors. I adore the shape of the collar.

Since you mentioned the nipple buttons, that is literally all I can see.

But her expression whilst laughing still looks like Fire Marshall Bill to me. Skull and teeth. Bless.

    • Timbuktu says:

Agreed! Love the jeans and boots, love the jeans and sweater, but sweater + boots – not so much. It’s not like she’s a working girl who couldn’t afford to buy another pair of boots! I think grey boots would have made her look even more polished than it already is.

  21. cindyp says:

Sigh, she never gets it quite right. I like the sweater but why gray? Would have been great in a more vibrant color that complimented the brown boots. Even her hair; nice that it’s up instead of blowing all over the place up but the bun is more of an evening look. How about a cute ponytail? Coat is ok but needs a patterned scarf. I will be her stylist for free!

  22. vava says:

The red coat. NO to those nipple buttons, that designer blew it and Kate did too by wearing this mess. I thought that coat, and that hairstyle made her look really aged. I know people twice her age that look more put together than she does (plus they can also speak intelligently.).

The second outfit. With this ensemble, the above mentioned hairdo seems to look OK and it’s nice she doesn’t have her hair flying all over the place. This way we can see the collar/lapels. The sweater coat is fine, but the sleeves look too tight. For once I don’t mind the skinny jeans on her because her rear end and crotch are covered up. They also are the perfect pants to wear tucked into boots. Kate in cowboy boots = theme dressing for Western Canada.

    • Olenna says:

Ditto to everything, but I think the hairdo is a bit aging in this case. The high-heeled cowboys must be a theme item she wanted to throw in because they certainly don’t go well with the outfit. IMO, ankle boots or a sleek knee-hi boot would have looked better.

      • vava says:

A nice sleek ponytail might have looked better. Or perhaps a top knot, higher up on her head? That low chignon seems better for an evening event or situations where she is wearing a hat. She was in great grandma territory yesterday.

Kate needs help with her shoe game.

      • Olenna says:

Agree, Vava. Her shoe game and hair game are both off, and a ponytail would have added some much needed ‘chic’ to this look.

  23. Kaz says:

The hairy duchess looks so much better when all that hair is tied back! The grey cardigan/coat, skinny jeans and cowboy boots: looks very casual – I think black boots or a stronger colour cardigan would have looked a bit sharper and smarter.
She’s doing alright: no flashing but nipple buttons instead!

  24. Rose says:

God, finally some new shoes. I like the shoes but not with the coat. But I do appreciate that she didn’t wear another pair of nudes or try (and fail) to match with red shoes.

I seriously am loving that sweater coat. I love a black jean/boot combination, but to me these jeans are reading blue? Could just be my screen. My biggest problem is the shirt peeking out of the sweater. I would have gone with something softer.

Overall, Kate has looked very happy on this tour. I remembering thinking in India she looked much happier than usual – it might be an unpopular opinion, but I think she really enjoys being on tour and would do it more often if William was so inclined.

    • Tough Cookie says:

What’s not to enjoy? Same taxpayer-supported life in a different location. More new clothes/shoes/hats.

  25. seesittellsit says:

I like the red coat – it’s very Jackie Kennedy – all she needs is a pillbox hat. But it’s a nice fall color, I like her hair up, right length, very Duchess-ish. I like the pale blue coat (full disclosure: I’m a sucker for anything in the powder blue range, including china, curtains, bedspreads . . .) but I think the casual outfit is a bit disjointed: brown boots, blue jeans, light blue sweater jacket. I’d have opted for darker boots.

  26. NOLA says:

Love the Canadian sweater cost. Absolutely gorgeous and I want a knockoff version immediately! I wear my cognac colored boots with black leggings all the time, so ThaT combination doesn’t bother me either. The red coat – meh. Color is gorgeous on her but the coat is pretty boring.

  27. Beckysuz says:

I just realized I could never be a royal. They can’t wear sunglasses on outings, and all I can do is cringe looking at these sunny photos. I feel a light induced migraine coming on just looking at her squinting against the sun. So yes that’s why I could never be a royal…nothing at all to do with me being a married mom of three from Michigan 😉

    • Tough Cookie says:

There’s no rule against royals wearing sunglasses. Diana was photographed many times wearing them, on tour and at home.

  28. Cerys says:

The red coat is nice but very similar to the countless number of coats she already has. Surely she could have used one of them again? The big talking point are the shoes. Not only are they not beige but they are a different style from all her other heels. Has she been replaced by a doppelganger who doesn’t know the routine?? Lol.
I liked the more casual outfit although, personally, I would not have worn brown boots with black jeggings and a grey jacket. The jeggings look much better tucked into boots and with a longer top/jacket.
They certainly seem more relaxed and engaged with things when they are on tour compared to when they are in the UK. it’s quite sad that they can’t muster the same level of interest for the people who pay for their pampered lifestyle.

  29. LaMaitresse says:

All the clothes were pretty expensive for a trip paid by the Canadian tax payers. Bespoke McQueen, Herrera, Dolce&gabbana, Preen, for relatively poor areas, with the exception of Victoria. I’m not saying she should be wearing high street, but she’s not a Queen nor the Princess of Wales. Must be fun to raid Charles wallet, and have the cheek to ignore the poor man!

  30. Rocio says:

    The red ourfit is glorious.

  31. Alix says:

I hate to nitpick, since her hair isn’t flying in her face during this visit, but there ARE ways to do an updo that doesn’t look old and dowdy. Her hairdresser must hate her.

  32. Konspiracytheory says:

I am terribly fashion-challenged, so I learn quite a bit from reading here – thanks ladies! Having said that, even I notice/hate the nipple buttons.

  33. Kitty says:

So some of you guys say there is not a lot of coverage with this tour well guess what, today is the day the kids will be on show so they will definitely be a lot of coverage wouldn’t there be and lots of fawning.

    • Elizabeth says:

Their PR is playing it smart…start and end with kids…to get a lot of good coverage.
And the kids party is 10 AM and rest of the day is private!!
They have ‘worked’ just about 3-4 hours each day in this “tour/vacation” and then get private time as well. Waity is probably smarter than we all give her credit for, she waited for this life of pleasure and no responsibility at all!!

  34. Kat says:

I think she looks great in both outfits! I would definitely wear the first outfit. I know it’s your job and all, but the nit picking seems excessive. Just looking for something wrong. Would it be awful to say she looks good and leave it at that?

  35. Mamunia says:

Has anyone else noticed that with the red coat she’s carrying a tartan scarf? She did this the other day too. Not wearing the scarf, but had it draped over her arm. It’s so affected. She obviously puts a great deal of thought into her outfits, but still manages to get something wrong. Sad.

    • LaMaitresse says:

This is a lazy woman who makes what 90 engagements a year, mostly of the “fun” type, film premieres, Wimbledon, etc. She insulted the Irish Guards by crying off by the last minute, saying she had to stay home with the kids, when she has a full time nanny and part time help. I think I’d be a bit more charitable about her if she was a bit more willing to embrace her role like the rest of the Royal women of Europe, who haven’t had so many years to “ease” into the role, and Mummy practically living with her!

  36. Lucy says:

I want the grey coat!! And I like the shoes she wore with the red one.

  37. Kitty says:

Has anyone looked at the DM comments? I don’t know if the palace has anything to do with it but people are saying how Kate has charm and makes everyone in the room happy or how William couldn’t have picked a better wife Ect…

    • graymatters says:

Maybe she is charming in these sorts of social situations. It’s the easiest type of small-talk to learn and perhaps she listened to some guidance from the palace about the need to up her small-talk game. It’s good to see she’s improving, regardless of why. And I can’t believe anyone else could be happy with William, either.

      • Kitty says:

@GRAYMATTERS, don’t you think William and Kate just don’t have the passion and heart with their charity work and Royal duties compared to Harry? Makes me sad.

    • Cerys says:

The DM has been really sycophantic during this tour. It seems Kate can do no wrong at the moment. Strange.

  38. Elizabeth says:

Does anybody else think that perhaps the Queen might have given them some “pointers” on tour behaviour during the Balmoral stay?

Kate has so far had no wardrobe malfunctions. Lots of red (yes, it’s Canadian colours, but she does love theme dressing). She seems to have been instructed to look affectionately at William from time to time. She doesnot normally puts her hand on his leg and we seem to be seeing one leg touch per outing. Either that, or there has been some shift in their relationship. Granny probably didn’t think she needed to specifically instruct William to read his briefing notes. 😛

Now the Queen needs to arrange ‘how to clap’ lessons for Kate! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asLjpRc32-M&feature=youtu.be&t=73 Dear god! why does she clap like that? Any neuro-specialists around to shed some light??

    • Cerys says:

I think someone has had a word in their ears. I noticed she actually ate something that she was offered during one of the trips. She usually avoids that sort of thing.

      • Elizabeth says:

@Cerys: good point…sometimes her refusal to eat is obnoxious…she refused tea in India as it maybe unhealthy being India is a ‘poor’ country ! Tea..a drink that is boiled over 100 degree Cel. good enouh to kill germs if they were there in the first place!

      • carolind says:

Could her refusal to eat in India have had anything to do with getting stomach bugs? I know the majority of British people that go there get stomach upsets and think how embarrassing this would have been for her. Nothing wrong with Indian food just that Brit stomachs are not used to it and takes time to get acclimitised. For same reason Queen willl not eat shellfish or soup which fills her up too much.

  39. perplexed says:

If she were a lady on the subway, I’d probably think she looked good. As a princess? I don’t know.

  40. Mothercluckers says:

I do think Kate is looking great n Canada. But can we talk about Will’s tight pants!? Especially when he is sitting?

    • Elizabeth says:

@Motherclukers – Kate flashed Canada the last time around..now its William’s turn! As he cant wear skirts, its too-tight pants that leave very little to imagination… urgh!

  41. Amelie says:

Love the sweater coat! I just thought it was a fancy sweater though but still something I’d wear!

Also I know people tend to dislike Kate’s affinity for skinny jeans. Which is fine but that is what they are, they are not jeggings. You can see the pants bunching at the knee like normal jean and jeggings don’t typically do that. Just bugs me how people keep calling them that. I used to own a pair of jeggings and they were not that comfortable and extremely tight, clung like a glove and showed everything. Kate is definitely wearing skinnies and they are pretty much all I wear too inside boots in the fall. That is a solid look IMO.

    • Sarah says:

I think skinny jeans are fine for her at home, but when on an official trip, they are too tight. Like any other professional, she has a dress code, and in those jeans she almost showed plumbers crack at a polo match in the spring. A nice pair of boot cut jeans, but looser like khakis, would be fine. But not skin tight jeans. Not professional. And as much as I can’t stand Reese Witherspoon, she wears nice jeans and looks very polished wearing them. Kate doesn’t look polished at all in her jeans. She looks tacky and underdressed.

I love the red coat on her, except for the button placement. Awkward. 🙂

  42. Betti says:

Am generally not a fan of her style but she has looked the best i have ever seen her these past few days. I wouldn’t be surprised if Natasha has been getting outside help with styling Kate or at least recommended a few of those dresses.

  43. carolind says:

I think Kate’s clothes on this tour look the best I have seen her in. Her style is much improved. By the way block heels serm to be popular in Britain just now.

Regarding how she looks overall she is never going to please everyone.

  44. Reece says:

I would say no to the boots because of their “cowboy” *eye roll*
Although I might die from the shock her NOT wearing the bright red shoes with the bright red coat dress. No matchy matchy, heading towards fashion-y…*Jefferson’s voice from Hamilton*Whhaaaaa???

    ETA: NVM spotted the clutch.

  45. Nikki says:

I think she looks really great!!
