Ben Affleck on parenting: ‘all of a sudden you feel so vulnerable’

"The Accountant" Los Angeles Press Conference
Ben Affleck has The Accountant opening in a little under two weeks, so we can expect to see him out and about in LA often in the interim. These are photos of him at the press conference and with his son Samuel, four, which were taken last week. Affleck plays a math whiz who becomes a financial consultant for international crime syndicates. It costars Anna Kendrick and JK Simmons and looks like an excellent thriller. Affleck has shown that he can direct and now he’s flexing his acting muscles post Batman. In a new press conference for the film, Affleck talked about his kids and how, as a father, he can relate to the dilemma of the man who played his father in the film. His character is on the Autism syndrome and his interests get channeled into learning advanced math.

In the R-rated thriller, Affleck plays the accountant, Chris, a math genius with a mysterious set of special skills who also happens to be on the autism spectrum. Chris grows up with a very strict, very physical father who encourages his sons to fight their way out of conflict, but does so out of love for his “different” son. Affleck told reporters the fictional parenting style gave him pause.

“That’s what I thought was the most heartbreaking thing about the story and it was definitely moving to me as a parent,” Affleck said. “I face dilemmas that we all do everyday about what’s the right way to raise children, what’s the right thing to teach them? Every moment there comes a crossroad.”

The Batman v. Superman star said that he does his best to make the right parenting choices for his children without getting too caught up in the deeply emotional aspects of normal growing pains and childhood vulnerabilities.

“When you have kids, what’s that expression, ‘Your heart is outside your body,’ all of the [sic] sudden you feel so vulnerable and this fear of a child being vulnerable is very very powerful,” he said. “I can see why it made for a really interesting character in the father. Here’s a guy out of love and compassion and fear for his son, actually ends up kind of brutalizing him and abusing him and it’s a really interesting look at what’s the appropriate way to channel the intense emotions we have as parents, it’s not easy.”

I remember Katherine Heigl saying that parenting was like having your heart outside your body. It’s a common enough saying. Affleck’s interviews are usually good because he thinks deeply about things and he gives thoughtful answers. Sometimes he’s throwing people under the bus for his own choices, but this is not one of those times. He is being somewhat revealing though, in that he admits that there are crossroads with kids and that he’s trying to figure out the right thing to do. I suspect he’s talking about his relationship with his children’s mother as much as his children.

Affleck has several other new interviews as part of his press junket. In an interview with E! he talks about helping his kids with their math homework, as it relates to his character in The Accountant. He said that “Jen’s very good at math” but that he’s worried his kids will surpass him once they reach seventh or eighth grade. He’s asked if he’s “surprised at the interest” in his successful coparenting with Jen and he answers “very little surprises me.To ET, Affleck talks about taking his daughters to meet Taylor Swift, where they were dumbfounded. Fox 5 got him to discuss the critical reception to Batman vs. Superman, and he made it clear that it was a huge hit and that he personally liked it. He said the film was “judged not necessarily on execution so much as on its tone” and that “People seemed to want [it] to have a lighter tone.” It was very dark, but it was also too long and meandering.

Okay finally something I can stand behind. Parenting is vulnerable AF! I totally was NOT prepared for the feeling of inate primal connection that would occur once the baby left my body. Of course I knew it was profound, but I didn’t know that any emotion my child felt I would *automatically* feel a million times more inside of my body instantly? I said the other day just when I think I could not be more proud of my kids or more in love with them they go and do something and I’m ugly crying and I’m
For SURE my heart has expanded inside of my chest.

That said: Netflix added Dazed and Confused this weekend and god how I love Ben Affleck as O’Banian who flunks. That part was made for him. So good. Good ole pre tan, pre fixed teeth puffy haired Ben.

Sweet! I was just looking for Dazed and Confused the other day and I couldn’t find it. Watching it tonight!

  2. KB says:

I say “all of the sudden” too. I know it’s wrong, but I never catch myself until after I’ve said it!

And is that a paparazzo with his kid in the back ground of that photo?

  3. JoJo says:

I thought the E! video interview was pretty awkward toward the end, and Ben was visibly uncomfortable. The interviewer is the one probing him about homework and kids, and she also asks specifically whether Jen is better at math, and he is simply responding to her questions. It seems like a pretty obvious attempt from the interviewer to get him to reveal something about Jen or his separation until he shuts it down with the “Nothing surprises me,” and then you can see that they edit/cut that scene and jump to another part of the conversation. I’m sure this is just the beginning of months of press interviews for The Accountant and Live by Night where reporters are going to take the opportunity to try to force out some nugget about their separation/divorce.

I’m just intrigued by that paparazzi in the background of that picture of Jennifer Garner who appears to have brought his son to work with him….

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

At Lax,an autograph hunter takes his young child with him when he works. He explained that once he had the one and only autograph of a grumpy actor( Daniel Craig?) because it is his young son who asked it

    • A says:

He did and Jennifer calls him out on it in the video at x17

      • Moose says:

She uses her kids for good press and to stay relevant so she has no room to talk about what other people do with theirs.

  5. ScotiaGirl says:

There is a video on X17online where they ask her if she has any advice for Brangelina and she tells them she is dating Brad then starts giggling.

    • Kristin says:

Why would she say something like that? Normally I would never comment on JG bc she’s not worth my time and energy, but really? Way to have some compassion. That woman just needs to stop talking, I feel like every time she opens her mouth she never thinks about anything at all! Like her comments on how your not living your life to your full potential until you have kids bs. Some of us can’t have children! Shut the hell up!

    • Moose says:

She is legit stupid, like double-digit-IQ-can’t-read-the-temp-of-the-room STOOPID.

Only 9 comments and it was posted hours ago. I think the people who visit and post on this board are officially over Ben Affleck. I saw that he’s promoting The Accountant and telling yet more anecdotes about his kids. For someone who complains about the pap attention on his kids, he always seems to direct the conversation to them when he has another crap movie to sell. I wonder if they know that their parents’ selling them out are the reason that they’re hounded every day?

    • Lena says:

To be fair, I saw the e news interview and they brought it up – how do you split the homework help – stupid question but celebs have to answer All stupid questions or they look ill tempered I actually feel sorry for them – they rather just talk about the movie but stupid reporters only care about their private lives

      • Moose says:

He volunteered the stories about telling them about autism, introducing the girls to Taylor Swift, etc. He uses his kids for good press, there is no way to deny it at this point.

    • Jayna says:

I am looking forward to The Accountant. Ben isn’t over. He lies low these days and so isn’t clickbait for this group. That doesn’t have anything to do with box office draw out in the rest of the world outside of this forum. I think this movie is going to do well at the box office.

      • Moose says:

I think it will get pummeled by critics (Ben’s acting, lol) and then get pummeled by Jack Reacher.

He’s on the decline. Look at his fat, jowly face with those beady eyes. He’s trying to disguise it all with a beard but it’s not working. He just looks odd now.

      • Jayna says:

@Moose, I disagree that it will get pummeled by the critics if it’s as good as the one trailer I saw. Ben is a good actor, not great, but he’s done plenty of movies where his acting is fine if he picks the right project. The Accountant looks intriguing, with a fantastic supporting cast. I think the budget is smaller than a Jack Reacher movie anyway. The Accountant comes out a week ahead, so I think it will have a good opening.

I found the first Jack Reacher movie just okay, nothing more.

  7. B says:

He did an interview and wasn’t drunk and slurring? That face of his, wtf did he do to it? SMH He looks like fresh sh*t.

  8. Jayna says:

I loved Matt and Ben’s skit last year for their charities, flying the winner out to hang with them.

Their new one (Omaze.com/Boston) includes the winner coming and hanging out with Matt and Ben and Tom Brady in Boston. The promo skit is based around their fanboy man crush on Tom Brady and fighting over who is his bestie. I loved it. If you like Ben and Matt, then you will get a chuckle out of it, and it’s all for a good cause.

@Kitten better send in her $10 donation, and she can hang with Tom Brady if she wins.

    • JoJo says:

Saw the skit – loved it. 🙂 And I agree, think The Accountant looks like it’s going to be a solid movie.
