Jessica Biel’s next career move: musical theater

Jessica Biel’s career is sort of in the toilet. Her big role as a stripper in Powder Blue is going straight to DVD. A similar fate is likely for Nailed, the film she did with Jake Gyllenhaal. Being “Justin Timberlake’s girlfriend” isn’t enough when you’re competing with actresses who can actually, you know, act. So what’s in store for Jessica’s next career move? Next up, she’s going to murder our ears!

Jessica confirmed to WENN (story via Showbiz Spy) that she has been taking voice lessons in preparation for a “one-off stage production” of Guys & Dolls in Los Angeles. Biel will be playing… Sister Sarah! Ugh, please no, no, no. In the film version of Guys & Dolls, Sister Sarah was played memorably by Jean Simmons, opposite a beautiful, young, sexy Marlon Brando as Sky Masterson. Jessica Biel, you are no Jean Simmons. Not even close.

Jessica Biel is taking singing lessons in preparation for her role in a one-off stage production of musical Guys & Dolls this summer.

The actress — who is currently dating singer Justin Timberlake — is to play Sister Sarah in the stage spectacular at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

“I’ve been taking voice lessons a couple of times a week and really getting to know the music and working that muscle again which has been quiet a very long time,” she said.

“I have to learn everything before we go into rehearsal because we only have 10 days to rehearse to put the whole thing together… It’ll be interesting. I plan on seeing the Broadway show soon, which I’m hoping is good.”

I don’t really have a problem with Jessica Biel in general, I just don’t think she’s very talented. Perhaps her career would be a lot better if she would just acknowledge that she isn’t the next Cameron Diaz or even Eva Mendes. Biel isn’t a film actress and she definitely isn’t a stage actress or a musical actress - perhaps a smartly-written television show? I could see her being good on an ensemble drama, or even a half-decent sitcom. In any case, going from dreams of film work to a “one- off stage production” in L.A. isn’t great news. The only bright spot for her is that she’s the new face of Revlon. Look at what a Revlon contract did for Jessica Alba! Oh, wait. Nevermind.

  1. sigh. Does anybody else miss her at Mary? She shined in that role. I find just about everything else with her hard to take.

  2. Jessica Beil looks like a guy in drag to me. Her features are a little on the manly side. She has no real talent; she should just hang it up. The only thing she has done is 7th Heaven, lets face it she has peaked! If she wasn’t dating Justin Timberlake, no body would remember her name.

  3. She would do well in a procedural crime show. She has a deep monotone voice, stony demeanor and as the previous poster mentioned, she’s kind of manly.

What is it with ‘Jessicas’? Every year there’s a new one who is proclaimed hottest thing and then once it’s realized she can’t do much besides pose, she vanishes. Alba, Simpson and Biel have all suffered the same fate. Well, except Alba and Biel don’t have dads who for the sake of their own ego, won’t give it up.

  4. That darker lipstick looks good on her. She usually has pale lips, which do nothing for her looks.

  5. Why do her upper and lower lips look exactly the same? Like two hotdogs about to burst? I couln’t for the life of me guess.

  6. I agree, though, a pretty girl who lacks talent can still have a great career.

The problem is she has to have charisma and presence. She needs to be either cute/ sweet or more edgy in attitude.

In order to have a successful film career you need at least 2 out of the following 3:
    -gorgeous face
    -acting ability
    - charisma/ charm/ presence

You can have tons of one of those and that will compensate for the lack of the other.

Biel seems harmless, but she is too bland. There is nothing interesting or different about her background or personality.

As for her looks- her body is a bit too masculine and big (thick and tall) IMO, and her nose and lips have been through too much work.
    But that’s a different issue.

I wonder how many strings Timberlake pulled for her to “get” this musical gig?

  8. Easy Virtue came out a while ago in England and it is absolutely brilliant.
I didn’t have particularly high expectations but it is very very enjoyable. And believe it or not Jessica is great in it! I have never liked her in anything else though.

  9. Katie,

I saw the movie as well. Jessica got REALLY lucky.

I agree with what the people say here though. She needs to drop off of the planet (like marry and have kiddies with Timberlake), and come back with a solid role on a Law and Order type of show. Or CSI.
