Is Disney going to cast a bunch of white people in the ‘Mulan’ live-action film?

mulan1

Last week, Disney announced that they were fast-tracking their live-action remake of their popular animated film Mulan. Mulan is beloved by many, many people, and many of those people were really, really worried that Disney was going to completely f—k up a live-action film. One of the biggest concerns was and is that Disney will hire white actors to play significant roles. The other big concern is that Disney will change the story significantly so that the story of a woman’s self-sacrifice and badass-ness will become all about some dude-bros.

At first, there were jokes made about all of the whitewashed “dream casts” for Mulan, like Disney was going to cast Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey or something. Disney insisted that of course they were going to hire Chinese and Chinese-American actors, which is good news (and hopefully they’ll stick with it). But then over the weekend, there were reports that the script was changed so that Mulan would have some kind of “white savior” figure. Sources say… no, but with some caveats.

Disney recently began its search for a leading lady to star in its upcoming live-action version of Mulan—an actress that, the studio clarified, will definitely be Chinese. That declaration eased concerns that the film might end up whitewashing a story based in Chinese legend, like several films that have come before it. Much of that goodwill dissipated, though, on Monday, when rumors flew that the film will feature a white male lead. Now a source close to the project has confirmed to Vanity Fair that the lead love interest in the film will be a Chinese character after all.

On Monday, someone who said they had read a Mulan spec script posted an anonymous open letter to the site Angry Asian Man. The post claimed that the script featured a white savior type, a “30-something European trader” who falls in love with a teenage Mulan. Actor Joel de la Fuente tweeted in support of the article, sharing that he also read the spec script. “I can back you up on what you’re saying. I confirm everything you said about that draft.”

A source, however, tells V.F. that the spec script will not serve as the official script for the adaptation. “The spec script was a jumping-off point for a new take on the story that draws from both the literary ballad of Mulan and Disney’s 1998 animated film,” the source said. “Mulan is and will always be the lead character in the story, and all primary roles, including the love interest, are Chinese.”

The statement seems to confirm that the spec script might have included a white male lead, which would have been disappointing had it come to fruition. However, fans should be glad to know that when the live-action movie itself eventually hits theaters, Mulan’s story will stay true to the character’s roots.

[From Vanity Fair]

So yes, there was an original script where Mulan falls in love with an older white guy who “saves” her but the script is being changed and…okay. If Disney insists that they’re committed to making this film with a primarily Chinese cast, then I choose to believe them. I think they know that they’ll be wading into a huge controversy if they don’t hire Chinese and Chinese-American actors. But! I do think that Disney is going to put some white actors and white characters in there just because they can’t help themselves.

I thought the live-action versions of the films were going to be real people versions of the originals? Or are thy going to have twists to them like Maleficent? All I know is is that Mulan is an awesome movie, and they better not mess it up. 😠

That being said I would love a live-action version of Pocahontas. An original live-action Disney princes film would be cool too. Original films would be even better though lol

    • Ayra. says:

The thought of it is nice, I’ll admit but considering they’ve been struggling with casting actual Asian characters for a movie in China, lord only knows what they would do to Pocahontas. Not to mention the relationship with Native Americans would be… *puts that idea back into the shelf*

      • Lynnie says:

Oh true 😕. Maybe this is just me being optimistic, but I would hope that with the direct feedback of social media, if rumors of whitewashing came out Disney would quickly get thousands of reasons why that wouldn’t be such a smart idea. And/or possibly change the story up a bit a la Maleficent to reduce the problematic elements. Then again I can hear a Disney exec laughing in my face as I type this lol

    • LAK says:

There are several live action films telling the story of Pocahontas unless you want the disney specific version based upon the animation.

2005 film Starring Colin Ferrell called THE NEW WORLD. here is a trailer.

      http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0402399/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_28

1953 film starring Jody Lawrence called CAPTAIN SMITH AND POCAHONTAS also known as BURNING ARROWS

      http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045603/

Mind you, a Peruvian was cast as Pocahontas in the Colin Ferrell movie which was an improvement on the white European actress in the earlier film.

      • Lynnie says:

Thank you for the links! I know what I’m gonna be watching this weekend 😊

      • LAK says:

If you don’t mind subtitles, there is a chinese movie of Mulan. It came out in 2009. It’s called HUA MULAN or English language titles are MULAN: RISE OF A WARRIOR or MULAN: LEGENDARY WARRIOR

        http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1308138/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Infact, looking at imdb, there are 3 live action chinese retellings of this story and 3 other animations. Earliest film is from 1927.

“All I know is is that Mulan is an awesome movie, and they better not mess it up. 😠”

Yes and yes and… yes. If “I’ll Make a Man Out of You,” also known as the greatest Disney song of all time, is not included in this film, I will go to every showing in my area and just scream at the top of my lungs.

  2. MissMerry says:

this could also be part of the plan: let the public find and spread rumors about white actors and love interests then when we use asian actors and mulan is still badass, the audience will get boners about us and it.

  3. Ayra. says:

Why can’t they just leave this and other classics alone? Stop, don’t touch it, don’t look at it, don’t breath on it. Reminisce that you did well and move on.
I feel like the only good thing that might come of this is the exposure some Chinese actors are going to get.
The “white savior” shit just has me twitching EVEN if they took it out…why the hell was it in there in the first place???!

This isn’t even in production and I’m already livid.

    • Amelia says:

      Seriously.
      +1 to all of this.

Milan was an integral part of my childhood, -!; I will bloody riot if they screw this up.
Also, no Donny Osmond soundtrack = no deal.

  4. vaultdweller101 says:

Nothing of substance to add, but I always thought that Li Shang was the hottest of the Disney love interests. The way he strode around that mountain totally shirtless, in the middle of winter, while everyone else was fully clothed… I hope they pay attention to this particular detail when casting.

    • INeedANap says:

YUUPPPP loved him! And I love that it’s a plot point that he defers to her cunning and strength in the end. He doesn’t save her, and she saves him twice.

I am worried the new film will have a Chinese love interest who will still save the day, rather than letting Mulan be the center.

    • Anners says:

Lol! He’s definitely my cartoon crush! And I love how he was the one sexualized in the film, not Mulan. She’s my favourite Disney heroine. ***pleasepleaseplease Disney don’t mess this one up!***

    • I Choose Me says:

Whew. I’m not alone. Mulan is my favourite Disney character and Shang is definitely the best love interest of them all. Eustace aka Flynn Rider is second.

    • Justjj says:

I agree that Li Shang needs to be super hot for the purpose of accuracy* I hope they don’t cast any white people. That would mess up everything.

  5. Red says:

There’s no doubt that they will find a way to insert a white man. Their concession will probably be that she saves him instead of the other way around but that’s it. There will be a white man in Mulans story.

    • Algernon says:

Won’t be surprised if they get a name actor to voice a CGI dragon sidekick. I don’t think they’re dumb enough to put white actors in lead roles in this movie.

  6. DSA says:

Disney is all about happy endings…

For happy endings to happen, they need white people.

    The End.

  7. Mia4S says:

Interesting how as children we did just fine with the animated Mulan that had ZERO white POV characters. 🤔

Sigh…I will be very disappointed if they feel the need to go there. At minimum we will see some white merchant who serves as “narrator”. 🙄

  8. MellyMel says:

There are no white people in the animated version, so why put them in a live-action one? You can have a very successful movie without a white person cast as this has been proven over and over again! Disney better not mess this up or live-action Aladdin for that matter.

  9. Margo S. says:

There is no need to put white actors in Mulan… ugh. If anything, I hope they have eddie murphy reprises his role as Mu-shu and maybe a Latino as the cricket!

  10. Saks says:

Nooooo!! (*insert Steve Carrell screaming “no” gif*)
Mulan is still one of my favourite movies. My dad took me to watch it when I was a kid and we both adored the film. Mulan is a badass and I love that the love story isn’t even explicit in the film, and that the main thing is how she finds her own worth and succeeds as a woman.
I’m going to be so mad if Disney ruins this one… 🙁

  11. Veronica says:

Please stop, Disney. You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for my teenage crush on Li Shang to be validated by a real life actor playing him. Don’t ruin this for me.

  12. Scarlet Vixen says:

I wonder if they added a white male lead to the spec script in the hopes that it would more easily be greenlit, then the plan was to ditch him and have an all Asian cast all along? Even that theory (that casting a famous white actor makes a movie more likely to be made) is problematic. But I doubt Disney ever had a real intention of shoving a white dude in the Mulan movie for no good reason.

I usually HATE remakes AND Mulan is my fave Disney movie. But, I’ve been hoping for a live-action Mulan for years and years. There was talk long ago of an live-action Mulan film with Michelle Yeoh, but it never came to fruition. So far the Disney live-action remakes have been good (Cinderella, Maleficent, Jungle Book), so I have high hopes!

  13. Green Is Good says:

Nope, they’re going to cast Tilda Swinton to play ALL the parts. (See Doctor Strange casting).

  14. daisyfly says:

This is what’s going to happen:

Mulan and Shang will remain Chinese (though not necessarily played by someone Chinese), but Mushu, Chien Po, Yao, and Ling will be played by a non-Asian actors who will receive top billing in order to draw the audience that would normally turn away from films with unknown or foreign stars.

Ken Watanabe will probably play the Fa father, which will allow them to say they have a notable Asian actor (despite the fact that he’s Japanese, not Chinese), and Daniel Henney will play Shang (despite him being Korean), because he’s a more current Asian actor. Mulan will probably be played by an unknown actress and they’ll cast Luke Evans as Shan Yu, because he’s a “great villain” who’ll be “just coming off of the smash hit Beauty and the Beast” and “he looks more Asian than others”.

    *sigh*

  15. ell says:

on top of being white, he was also a 30 yo falling in a love with a teen age girl. soooo much wrong with this script i can’t even, they’re being really smart changing it.

  16. Adrien says:

Well that sucks. At least let that romantic male lead be Daniel Henney.

    • Mia4S says:

He’s gorgeous…but he’s also Korean and 36 years old! I think they could do a bit better for Li Shang.

  17. Felice. says:

All Chinese except for Eddie Murphy. Let’s face it, he’s not doing anything right now.

  18. adastraperaspera says:

Adore Mulan! Wish we could keep the heterosexism to a minimum in any remakes. Little girls are being sexualized at far too young of ages as it is. As for the white guy. That is not plausible in any way for this time period, for many thousands of years of cultural and historical reasons, and so would be nothing but racist marketing propaganda.

  19. pinetree13 says:

Speaking of live-action Disney movies…I’m still mad at Disney for tricking me into letting my child watch live action Jungle Book. IT WAS RIDICULOUSLY SCARY FOR A CHILD!!!!!! Like a giant CGI tiger chasing a small child isn’t scary enough they had to make his face scarred and scarier and have jump scares. The scene with the orangutan was like something out of Jurassic Park only with a gigantic terrifying ape (WTH where is that in the original?!?!) instead of the more comical King Louie from the cartoon.
Basically that movie gave my son nightmares for weeks and all I could do was kick myself for being so dumb to show it to him.

  20. Girlnextdoor says:

Ok, so my dream cast for this features Remy Hii (prince jingim on “Marco polo”) as Li Shang, because daaaamn that guy is a smokeshow.

  21. serena says:

Mulan is my favourite disney animation EVER, so I really hope they won’t screw this up..

  22. VA says:

I think China has already made a Mulan movie?
It’s going all around the Tumblr.

  23. Beau Kitty says:

White men have to be in it, regardless of the historical significance. Just get Matt Damon to star in it. He is the white savior the Chinese apparently need: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/08/09/the-real-reason-matt-damon-was-brought-in-to-save-ancient-china/

    • Justjj says:

I REALLY hope they don’t cast a white male savior! Jeez. No more patriarchal colonialism Disney, you’ve done enough to set women and people of color back. Thanks.

  24. WTF says:

    Is water wet?

  25. Alldamnday says:

Pete’s Dragon is also a great live action Disney remake, they are killing it with those. I wish they had done this movie 10-15 years ago, there are a bunch of still-youthful 50+ hot actors that could have sold it 10 years ago. I find Tetsuji Tamayama (Japanese/Korean) attractive (also 36,so maybe too old).

  26. raincoaster says:

“Mulan” was not the original. The original was a real person. You can only mess with a real story so much.

  27. Solan says:

Lynnie: “That being said I would love a live-action version of Pocahontas”

James Cameron did one. It’s called “Avatar”!

  28. Kori says:

He’s Korean but Daniel Dae Kim is hot. And a great set of abs. If she was younger Ming-Na Wen (The original voice of Mulan) would be awesome. (She’s still looks about 20 years younger than she is) She kicks butt all over Agents of SHIELD. Her costar Chloe Bennett’s father is Chinese (her given last name is Wang) and she has great fight skills but she looks too Western to probably be considered. It would be funny to have two Mulans in one show though.
