Kerry Washington welcomed baby Caleb Kelechi Asomugha two weeks ago

One of the last times we saw Kerry Washington out in public was at the Emmys in September, the photos in this post. To me, she looked like she was ready to give birth any day. And as it turns out, she was just a few weeks away from giving birth, which she did very quietly yet again. Kerry kept her first pregnancy and birth VERY undercover for the longest time, although we did eventually find out that she gave birth to a little girl named Isabelle Amarachi Asomugha. This time around, we’re learning that she gave birth on October 5th… to a boy! They named him Caleb Kelechi Asomugha.

Kerry Washington has added another little gladiator to her brood. E! News has exclusively learned that the Scandal star and hubby Nnamdi Asomugha have welcomed their second child together. The actress gave birth to a baby boy, Caleb Kelechi Asomugha, on Oct. 5. Other details were not immediately available.

E! News confirmed Washington’s second pregnancy in May, after her baby bump was on display while attending the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, D.C. Kerry and Nnamdi’s happy news came as the proud parents continue to raise daughter Isabelle away from the public eye.

[From E! News]

Because Kerry keeps her private life SO wrapped up, many people have theorized that her marriage is in shambles or that she and her husband never spend any time together, etc. I don’t know what to say about that kind of speculation. The fact that Kerry flies under the radar is a good thing, and I like that she’s not pimping details about her family constantly (or at all). I hope her marriage is strong, because two babies in two and a half years is no joke.

As for this baby’s name… it’s come to my attention that some of you are irritated by the fact that I like to rename babies! I just like trying to figure out the nicknames, which are always fun. I mean, do you really think Kerry is always going to call her son “Caleb Kelechi”? No. He’s going to be Cal or Cali or C.K. And much like Isabelle’s name, Caleb is a pretty popular boy’s name, but she chooses unusual (unusual in America) middle names so I guess it all evens out.

I like nickname speculating too, and I’ve always liked the name Caled. Congrats to Kerry and her husband!

  2. Locke Lamora says:

I like the name. And I like nicknames, mainly because my name can’t be made into a nickname, and I always wanted one.

I have the exact same reason for loving nicknames! My name is too short and I’ve never had one 🙁

    • InVain says:

Ditto! I’ve promised myself I’ll give my kids names that can be shortened or nicknamed.

I have a name that can form a few variations. The full name a beautiful longer name that’s adult, then there is a nickname that is shortened and also fairly adult sounding then it has the nickname with the “ie” sound at the end. Lizzie/Jennie etc. I always thought I’d stop being the Jennie version when I was a grown up; but somehow the kid version nickname stuck. (:

Hey Kaiser, the middle names are of Igbo origin (Nigeria) where her hubby comes from. Kelechi and Amarachi are very popular names among the Igbos here in Nigeria

    • Alix says:

Oooh, cool. Do you know what the names mean?

      • vilebody says:

Kelechi roughly means “glory to God” and Amarachi means “God’s grace.” Love Kerry, and love the names.

Edit: Scar beat me to it haha

    • ZIZABET says:

Kelechi means Praise God. and people who are called Kelechi here are often nicknamed K.C. and pronounced KayCee.

    • Original T.C. says:

Thanks Nigerian Celebitchy friends for explaining the names. I like how Kerry and her husband are trying to give their kids both Nigerian and American cultures. Congrats to both.

    • oce says:

Yes! preach – I am Olivia Chioma 🙂 and I go by both names. Friends call me Liv/Olivia/Livvy/Livs. Family call me Chioma/Chichi/Chump

    • Kath says:

I was just about to ask if anyone knew if her hubby’s surname was Nigerian. CB commentators are a wealth of knowledge!

I love that so many people from across the world are on this site. Thanks guys!

  4. AG-UK says:

  5. Common Sense says:

  6. Lucy says:

Caleb is a lovely name! Congrats to Kerry and her husband!

  7. Scar says:

I’m an Igbo gal from Nigeria. Same tribe as her husband. Amarachi and Kelechi are native names which means “Grace of God” and “Praise God”. Her husband is definitely a Christian and quite close to his roots

  8. ria says:

She is so beautiful, so talented too.
The names are really good sounding together.

  9. Jayna says:

Caleb is great. Why would he be called Cal?

  10. Ada says:

Kelechi and Amarachi are not unusual names. They are very popular Igbo names here in Nigeria where her husband is from. And I’m sure many Igbo Nigerians in the US bear these names.

  11. AMAZON says:

Yes, im also igbo. And the names are beautiful!

  12. ZIZABET says:

I am Igbo and Nigerian and I love the names. Kelechi is a beautiful name as is Amarachi.

  13. Londerland says:
