Is Cate Blanchett’s husband Andrew Upton fooling around with a 27-year-old?

wenn23344188

Cate Blanchett met Andrew Upton back in the 1990s. She always said that they had an instant connection, and she knew within a few weeks of knowing him that they would get married. They did get married and they are now the parents of four children: Dashiell John, Roman Robert, Ignatius Martin and their youngest, a daughter named Edith Vivian Patricia (they adopted Edith in 2015). I always thought Cate and Andrew’s marriage was totally solid. They never seemed to have any drama, and they worked together constantly, especially when they took over the Sydney Theatre Company for several years.

Last year, they moved to America on what seemed like a temporary basis. I suspected that Cate wanted to work more in film for a few years. They still keep a home in Sydney, and it seems that Andrew has been spending time at the Sydney home while Cate and the children are in America. And more than a week ago, a paparazzo got some photos of Andrew looking especially cozy with a young actress:

Her name is Harriet Dyer. She’s 27. He’s 50. From Star Magazine:

Cate Blanchett knew Andrew Upton was The One after just three days of dating – and the two are set to celebrate their 19th wedding anniversary in December. Or are they? As Star has learned, Upton spent the evening of October 11 with actress Harriet Dyer at the Strawberry Hills pub in Sydney while Cate was thousands of miles away in NYC with their children.

“Drinks were flowing. Andrew and Harriet’s hands were all over the place,” reveals an onlooker, who watched the pair play a flirtatious game of pool in the company of friends at the local watering hole – just miles down the street from the home he shares with Cate and the kids.

“At one point, Harriet rested her head on Andrew’s chest and he wrapped his arm around her, whispering something in her ear.”

Upton has worked with Dyer on past productions at the Sydney Theatre Company – but as the pictures suggest, they may have gotten person. “Andrew and Harriet looked uncomfortable with the camera snapping away,” says the spy. “It they hadn’t spotted the photographer, who knows what might have happened? Even if it was innocent, it certainly left a bad impression.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition]

This story has been weaving its way through Aussie and British tabloids and media outlets for days now but so far, most American sites and outlets aren’t talking about it. It’s possible that Harriet is merely a family friend, a work colleague and a drinking buddy. It’s possible nothing untoward was happening. It’s also possible that Andrew Upton is a dog. Poor Cate.

This is Harriet. She’s pretty. And young. Cate Blanchett’s ruffles are going to cut a bitch.

No no, no no no no no, nonononononononnoooooo 🙁

  2. detritus says:

I still love that dress. It’s striking and sculptural and just beautiful.

I hope this is a deal they have or something, he gets to flirt with decades younger women… I can’t find a nice spin for this. I’d be grossed out if my partner was all over someone so much below the rule of 7, and that they were getting so flirty, even if they didn’t physically cheat.

    • SM says:

I love it too, how can you deliberately mess up a relationship with the Queen Kate? She is the elegance in every possible way. Those pictures do not look like a regular night out with a family friend..

    • Kitten says:

      Me too! Love it.

  3. Spiderpig says:

He looks exactly like a hobbit.

  4. Margo S. says:

I don’t know about the rest of you, but that looks like some next level flirting. Is arms around her like that? Damn. But again, maybe they have an open relationship and cate doesn’t mind him fooling around with others….?

    • Rhiley says:

It is very inappropriate, even if all are good friends. You don’t hold on to another like that when your spouse is away. In the words of the great Judge Judy, “Don’t pee on my leg and tell me it’s raining.” He is either full on fooling around or he is dangerously close to fooling around. Who knows, though, maybe they have an open marriage. I will be honest, Cate Blanchett makes my toes curl so in my mind I think she could be getting some on the side to, and I hope it is with another woman.

    • crtb says:

If they do have an open marriage, I doubt that she would agree to him flaunting it in public.

    • kibbles says:

So many of these presumed “open marriages” are just a free pass for the husband to cheat. A lot of these wives allow it only to keep up appearances and reluctantly agree to stay in a marriage with a dog.

      • Maya says:

As a woman in an open relationship I can tell you that is definitely not always the case. Due to our lifestyle, we have quite a few friends who are either swingers or in open relationships and more often than not, it was originally the woman’s idea.

  5. BeBeA says:

I have an angry face, sad feelings, and concern for Kate and her kids.

  6. Scar says:

After Brangelina, no Hollywood divorce can surprise me anymore. Not The Knowles-Carters not Wilson-Hanks Not the Yeezington-Kardashians. None

    • Maya says:

      Same

    • jinni says:

Oh come on. It wasn’t like they were together for years. They were only married for two years. Now Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins break up was a “damn, really?” celeb break up.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I don’t/didn’t care for most of these couples, but I was just thinking, you know whose split would really sadden me? Hugh and Deborah. Tjey’re probably the only celeb couple I care about.

  7. trollontheloose says:

the Tim Burton and Depp and Co dance.. once they hit 50 they want the younger version of their actual wife. They’d rather trade “sans etats d’ame”.

  8. OTHER RENEE says:

If they spend long stretches of time apart then this is no surprise. Sad but no surprise.

  9. Alice says:

Cate and her husband new and disliked each other for years. One day it clicked and they married quickly after the first time they had sex. She talks about it in an Ellen video. The intro to this article is not exactly right.

  10. QueenB says:

i thought they had an open relationship. i cant see Blanchett as the kind to live a monogamous life.

but i thought they were seperated anyway. i mean we rarely see them anyway but arent they pretty much living countless miles apart? and trying to sell property. seems way more likely they are split up already.

im pretty sure we will get a split announcement soon. they were over for a long time i guess but i am sure Cate would have liked to have kept all of this out of the papers.

    • paolanqar says:

I don’t understand why you say that you cannot see Cate as the kind to live a monogamous life but I agree on the second part.
They are selling properties and that is 99% of the times a signal for an imminent break up

    • AnnaKist says:

I was thinking the same thing, Queen B. They might have quietly separated months ago, but not (yet) felt the need to make an announcement? They’ve got their Sydney house up for sale, but so far, no takers.

      I love Strawberry Hills pub!

      • msd says:

Ha ha, this is funny. I know this place, it’s a pub in Sydney lots of actors go to because it’s near a theatre in Surry Hills. Theatre folks tend to hug and mwah-darling each other a lot but Cate’s husband is clearing keeping his hands clasped while leaning in to listen. Harriet Dyer has a boyfriend, an Aussie actor Cate and Andrew also know. Daily Fail photo assumption at its finest. Also, I believe they’ve been in the UK not the US. They got a house there although they’ve been photographed a lot as a family together in Oz recently with Thor shooting. Anyway … their big Sydney house was sold ages ago, about the same time they adopted Edith. It’s only back on the market now because the dodgy buyer couldn’t get $20 million out of China! Not that it matters, they still own three more places in Sydney. I bet they got to keep a chunk of money when the buyer couldn’t follow through too. Oh to own so much property.

      • Skye says:

        @msd, great info!

    • Bridget says:

They’ve lived huge swaths of time separately through her career, I thought? Hasn’t he always been based in Sydney while she’s constantly on location?

But yeah, this is one of those couples that I’ve always wondered how they can last because of the sheer amount of time they spend apart.

  11. lightpurple says:

Isn’t Cate in Australia filming Thor: Ragnorak?

    • CharlotteCharlotte says:

Even if she is in Australia, Thor is filming down the road from me on the Gold Coast; Sydney is still 850km away.

Can’t stand Cate anymore, but if Andrew is cheating on her, that’s low. Hopefully it’s a situation that she is/was comfortable with. Even if they are splitting.

    • jetlagged says:

She wrapped a few weeks ago. If they are split up, it might get tense soon. Cate is starring in a play in New York that Andrew is directing. Rehearsals start soon I think.

      • Mannori says:

he’s not directing the play, he just adapted the text, so he’s not needed in NY at all.

  12. Jayna says:

Very inappropriate, and, sadly, it doesn’t appear like this is the first time, looking at their body language.

What is he doing now, now that he doesn’t run the Sydney Theatre Company? Spending time far apart, seeing this is usually no surprise with couples in the industry. I was surprised with their move, as he is so thoroughly entrenched in the Australian arts community, not America.

    • QueenB says:

” I was surprised with their move, as he is so thoroughly entrenched in the Australian arts community, not America. ”
as i said above: i would not be surprised if they were split up for months already.

  13. paolanqar says:

He should get his head checked because Cate seems like a well balanced woman with so much to say.
I would be heartbroken if i saw my husband behaving like that with another woman,
It is so sad when an ugly man in his 50s falls for a younger woman, probably only interested in his money/connections.
I really dislike men and women like them.

  14. Bex says:

Men confuse me. You are married to Cate Blanchett!

    • Jess says:

Exactly! I always thought that he must be really nice and supportive since she is so otherworldly amazing. Sounds like he’s just as predictable as other men. 🙁

    • kibbles says:

Many men, especially those with money and ample opportunities to have sex with attractive young women, will cheat regardless of who they are married to. Being with a gorgeous woman is great for a while until a man gets tired of the same thing and have to deal with the same problems that come with any long term relationship or marriage. If I were married in Hollywood I’d always be paranoid about the women around me and which one of them is ready and willing to sleep with my husband the second I leave town to film a new movie. There’s just too much temptation and too many thirsty young women looking for a sugar daddy.

      • Sandy says:

It’s not just men, though, he get bored with the same old think. Women can, and do, think the grass is greener and cheat as well. In Hollywood I’m sure it goes both ways.

      • Thurry says:

Why do we keep absolving men of responsibility? It’s always blamed on the other woman: she was a femme fatale, she was a slut, she was an irresistible temptation, blah blah blah blah. Jennifer did this with Angelina, she was so afraid to admit to herself on any level that her precious Brad was not as committed to their marriage as he should have been. Like Angelina held a Glock to his forehead while forcing him to sign the divorce papers.

      • kibbles says:

I’m not absolving men of responsibility. It takes two to tango. However, I have seen with my own eyes women who go after married man as if it were a sport. They love the chase and the feeling of taking a man from another woman. These men should have the willpower to say no, but it would be a lot easier if there were not another party so willing and eager to breakup a marriage.

      • Lex says:

        No.

People who want to cheat cheat regardless. If there’s no willing participant, perhaps it’ll be an unwilling one which is far worse. Or someone who is paid.

If you are married and you screw around you’re the only one cheating, not the other person. It is a 100% sexist viewpoint – if it is a married woman who cheats she is always blamed, never the ‘other man’. Open your eyes.

  15. Soror Bro says:

I always felt he was unworthy of her.

  16. Mannori says:

men, not matter how cultured progressive and seemingly intelligent, will never endure being the lesser part of the couple for so long. And Cate’s success has overshadowed him and his mediocre career as a playwright and director for so long.

    • QueenB says:

that does not really make sense after almost 20 years of her being the way bigger star.

      • Mannori says:

there isn’t really a rule on whats the right time to those feelings to come out…they could’ve be slow cooking for years..decades…a midlife crisis turning 50, her deciding to move to UK/USA, him feeling lost outside his Aussi theatre environment, where he felt he had some power….who knows, sometimes even the slightest thing could have triggered his “rebellion” to decide to punish Cate and her success the only way he has to punish her: by cheating on her….

  17. DavidBowie says:

I can’t believe that hobbit would step out on the Queen. Ugh.

  18. Myrto says:

How can you cheat on Cate Blanchett? And how can such an ugly dude pull so many gorgeous women? Utterly baffling.

    • Women tend not to be motivate by looks as much as men. That’s why men tend to watch porn, buy nudie mags and go to strip clubs more than women, they are more visually stimulated.

      • QueenB says:

thats not true. women are very visual too. look at how certain music acts or tv shows/movies are marketed towards women.

why women dont watch and buy those mags? because they are made by men for men. not much to see there for women. just like men love music but rarely scream for boy groups.

      • It’s not an insult to say that men and women are different because they are. Some research shows that men have a larger part of the brain that causes visual stimulation than women, others say it a result of learned expectations, some say both.
If there was money to be made from selling mags to women there would be a million out there. They tried with playgirl but it went out of business.

      • Sandy says:

If we are going on levels of shallowness, men go for looks and youth, while women like power and wealth. That’s how you get couples like Cheeto and Melania Trump, it surely wasn’t b/c of Tru live on either side.

    • Starkiller says:

Because, unfortunately for women, that’s life. Men who looks like orcs pull gorgeous women all the time. Women must either looks like supermodels, or receive abuse and contempt from said orcs merely for daring to exist.

    • kibbles says:

As long as the guy is rich and influential, he’ll have a slew of young women who will want him even if he looks like Quasimodo.

  19. They could just be friends, but IMO they are far too familiar with one another. People don’t usually have that much physical contact unless there’s more to it. With her spending time in the US. and him in Australia, they may well be split anyway. I’m sure they will work it out quietly. But, I kinda wouldn’t want to be Harriet.

  20. Kiki says:

Cate Blanchet is QUEEN in the entertainment industry. People may disagree with me on this one, but she is going to get her three or more Oscars like Meryl Streep. I absolutely love Cate and she is gorgeous.

However, I don’t believe this tabloid at all. Who to say her husband is with a collegue, or his niece.

  21. Patty says:

Comparing the two pics of Harriet and Cate and Harriet looks almost girlish whereas Cate looks like a fierce woman. I hope it’s not true but nobody really knows what’s going on in a relationship except the two people in it.

  22. Adrien says:

That is a very old looking 50 year old. He looks like Chris Dowd’s dad.

  23. Tig says:

Agreed-this is not the first time these two have been “friendly”. Sort of wondered if this is the trial balloon for the announcement of the separation, or did they go to some pub where folks didn’t have their backs, so to speak, and someone tipped paps/took their own pics. Re moving- granted, he may have felt like a fish out of water in America, but he would have been helping provide a home environment for his children. Guess not too important to him.

  24. Lorelai says:

I really hope this story isn’t true. But…those pictures. “Family friend” my ass!

What a moron this guy is.

  25. Sage says:

    I love Cate.

She had great chemistry with mr. Pitt in Benjamin button. They would make a nice couple.

    • Kitten says:

I like Brad a lot but he seems to be battling some serious demons and I don’t want that for Cate.

  26. Kitten says:

Ugh. Yeah those two look REALLY cozy.

If I may be allowed to be superficial for a moment, I have to say that I think Cate can do SO much better than that puffy dude.

  27. Locke Lamora says:

If he’s cheating on her he’s a dick.

But people in the comments are acting like he should worship the ground she walks on just because she’s better looking than him. Like he should be thankful such a woman even looked at him, which is ridiculous.

    • Kitten says:

Maybe that was part of the problem in their relationship?

Maybe he got tired of people saying that Cate is too pretty/talented/charismatic/____ for him.
I obviously don’t know the details, but that would be a classic scenario for a famous beauty and her not-so-famous significantly less attractive (sorry to say it that way but it’s true) husband.

      • Bridget says:

i wonder how that works for Christina Hendricks and her husband, because they get it a lot too.

      • perplexed says:

I don’t get how he wouldn’t have known people would talk about the looks disparity when he married her. It’s not as if it’s a slight looks disparity where subjective opinion comes into play as to who might be the better looking person in the couple — the disparity in looks is so broad and obvious. Maybe he gets tired of hearing it, but if he wasn’t going to like it I don’t get why he’d marry someone who looks like her when he looks like him. It’s not like she suddenly sprouted into being good-looking overnight. She looked like that when he married her.

  28. yeahiknow says:

Speaking as someone who’s husband cheated on them with a younger woman, this ish hurts. It’s one thing to get cheated on, but to feel like you’re an older model…. it just sucks. I hope these pics aren’t the whole truth, but regardless she’s Cate freaking Blanchett and gorgeous and could get anyone she wanted. If it is true, it’s time for her to trade up.

  29. elle says:

She looks like a poor man’s version of Cate.

    • Arwen says:

That’s what I was thinking too. Cheating is so hurtful but I always wondered why a lot of people who cheat chose to cheat with people who look or act like their current partners. I could almost understand if the other person was different (as in a variety is the spice of life excuse.) Cheating no matter what is hurtful but I feel like being cheated on with a newer model of myself would make me feel way worse.

    • Susannah says:

      Agreed! Thicker featured and younger.

  30. perplexed says:

Why would a 27 year old be interested in this guy? If he were a 50 year old Hugh Jackman, I wouldn’t ask this question, but in this particular case….huh.

    • Sandy says:

I don’t see him as particularly attractive, but maybe he is funny, nice, smart, charming etc. I mean, people wonder why Hugh Jackman is with his non-Hollywood plastic Barbie Doll wife, including doing mental gymnastics to prove he must be gay…maybe Hugh’s wife is just lovely like Cate’s husband might be (minus the possible cheating, of course).

      • perplexed says:

Hugh’s wife is attractive in the face though. She’s simply older. But if you look at her face, you can tell she’s pretty. Her features aren’t bad — he’s just so physically in shape that I suppose that overshadows the pleasantness of her face.

I get why Cate would have been attracted to her husband on the basis of personality, simply because she’s in the same age range. But I do question why a 27 year old would see anything in him, simply because she could find another 27 year old with just as nice of a personality.

    • Deedee says:

      He’s a director and she’s an actress?

  31. Guesto says:

Jesus. The shallow on show on here is so disturbing.

And from so many posters who act like they’re so above the physical! #hypocrisywritlarge

I like and admire both of them for their talents and the way they conduct their private life. If it’s the case that they’re going their separate ways, I hope it’s amicable and wish them well.

    • perplexed says:

He’s the one who’s 50, married with kids to a multi-dimensional 40 something year old, yet cheating with a 27 year old. I’d say he’s the shallow one.

  32. Molly says:

I hope it’s not true, but if it is, it just makes it so obvious that cheating is all about the cheater needing to feel better about himself. I mean, seriously, if you are going to cheat on Cate…

  33. Kath says:

OK, this will be the minority opinion, but judging from the DM photos, this girl is drunk as a skunk and hanging off Andrew Upton, while he’s being affectionate and pally – there’s no kissing or anything. In that second photo (which is a bit blurry here), she seems to be slurring something into his ear.

I’m sure this young actress woke up the next morning and is mortified by the pics, but I really don’t think they ‘prove’ he is cheating.

They were also with a bunch of other people who were getting their drink on.

  34. Molly says:

Whatever the case–and it doesn’t look good from those photos, assuming they’re not photoshopped–she will be fine. Just fine.

  35. cakecakecake says:

not MY Cate!!! time for her to turn him in for a better model..maybe younger.
    how dare he…

can anyone tell me what he does?? producer? fiancier??

  36. A Fan says:

There are a whole bunch on the Daily Mail where her arm is up and he’s leaning in. Don’t know what their deal is, but that pose is very sexual.

[*If we’re playing the photo assumption game, this doesn’t look good.*]

  37. Kori says:

There were rumors and blind items a few years ago about him cheating.
