Donald Trump got booed at the Al Smith Dinner, Hillary did well though

Last night was the big Al Smith Dinner, the event that takes place during every presidential election cycle. It’s an annual event, I believe, but every presidential cycle, the Smith family and the Catholic Church invites the Democratic and Republican candidates for president. The results are historically mixed, although the dinner has had a pretty good run in the past two election cycles. Then Senator Obama appeared at the dinner in 2008 with Sen. McCain, and both men were funny and self-deprecating. In 2012, Pres. Obama appeared with Mitt Romney, and again, both men correctly read the room and tossed some funny and civil jokes at each other’s way.

Coming off the third and final debate, no one really thought that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton would be able to even maintain a thin veneer of forced civility. HRC has cleaned Trump’s clock so thoroughly, and Trump is so thin-skinned, petty and lacking in discipline, humor and grace, many believed that the whole night was going to be a trainwreck. Trump spoke first, and for a few minutes, I honestly thought he was going to pull it off. He had some genuinely funny jokes, but then it just devolved.

The “carpenter” joke was great, the “pardon me” joke was solid, and the Melania-plagiarism joke killed in the room. But everything after the Melania joke, it just went off the rails. Is Trump the first candidate to get booed that hard at the Al Smith dinner? Perhaps.

Then it was Hillary’s turn. Hillary, as we know, is diligent and prepared. People were saying ahead of this speech, “But she’s not funny!” I disagree. As we saw throughout the debates, Hillary is a great sniper. She’s great with a fast quip, a sassy comeback. That combined with good speechwriters made her speech just the right balance. She was very funny, and then she moved in the last third of the speech to something more conciliatory and diplomatic tone, almost like a State of the Union speech. Good practice.

My favorite jokes? “I just want to put you all in a basket of adorables. And you all look so good in your tuxes, or what I call, formal pantsuits.” I laughed so hard at her Michael Bloomberg joke: “It’s a shame he’s not speaking tonight, I’m curious to hear what a billionaire has to say.” And of course this one: “Donald really is as healthy as a horse, you know the one Vladimir Putin rides around on.”

18 days until election day, peeps. Let’s keep it together!

I really love her whole look. And i did find him to be funny.

That dinner was civilised, even Hilary laughed at his jokes, she was charming as usual.

    • LiterallyaShambles says:

He looks like a pig in a tux, and she looks amazing. Only Hil would find a way to turn a suit into a ball gown.

      • Melly says:

She had to wear a suit because she was there to give Donald the business!!

      • LiterallyaShambles says:

        Yaaaaas.
        She is THE HBIC.

      • Megan says:

Trump is an overgrown toddler monster in a fancy suit.

      • LoveIsBlynd says:

Well let’s not insult pigs- but Donald Trump looks uncomfortable in anything. He’s just an itchy character and it’s painful to contemplate his his skincare/hair game. Hillary on the other hand chose exactly the right color and style while presenting as both regal and relaxed. I have to ask- were the audience members “booing” at Hillary supposedly taking an Haitian village or at Trump’s unhinged humor on the topic? I’m not certain.

    • Tanguerita says:

you must have watched a different show then. The first five minutes of his speech were palatable, but the rest was just his usual orange deranged self.

      • Melly says:

That’s how I saw it too. Trump went down hill fast

      • Nancy says:

I was going to say the same thing. The only funny thing he said was about his wifie giving the exact same speech as Michelle, then wham he started with the attacks and the boos were heard which never happened before at this dinner. It is an impossibility for him NOT to be an asshole and make audiences squirm at his blatant arrogance and lack of any normal guidelines of human dignity…..shall we said he can’t hide his sociopathic existence….other than that he is awesome…lol……gotta to laugh sometimes……18 more days!

      • Kitten says:

        I agree with you guys.

Even when he tries with every fiber of his being to restrain that deep-seated hatred, it just comes bubbling out of him uncontrollably.

      • Radley says:

I bet he wrote the second half of his speech himself. Either him or that gross Breitbart editor guy. Fail.

The fact that his funniest joke was made at his wife’s expense speaks volumes about him. He’s such an egomaniac. And then the way he ordered her to stand up after. Ugh.

      • milla says:

for his standards. for trump, he was ok.

you cannot really expect more from him, he did not ruin the event, plus i think people should lighten up, he is not gonna win anyways.

      • RedWeatherTiger says:

Yes, bitter, angry, caustic, and incredibly unfunny.

    • Lucy says:

She looked great but OMG his hair!! What in the Hell did he do to it!!

      • Boodiba says:

It looked like big patches were going to get loose and escape right?

      • Lucy says:

Yes! He over-gelled some larger patches of hair I think and combed them weird…he looked even more ridiculous, and it’s hard to say that because he ALWAYS looks ridiculous

    • eggy weggs says:

I love her. She’s so great. I voted early today and it was a pleasure and an honor to vote for her.

    • isabelle says:

His first 10 minute, he was funny, the Melania joke was maybe best joke of the night. As usual he starts off OK for him and then dive bombs into a suicide mission.

    • holly hobby says:

I didn’t think he was that funny. He threw in a she hates Catholics quip which was weird because this dinner was for Catholic charities.

      • Lightpurple says:

And she seemed to have much better rapport with the Cardinal. If he thinks he has the Catholic vote, he is in for a rude awakening

      • Kristen says:

Yeah, as a Catholic myself this one is a no-brainer: I’m voting for Hillary and so is my entire family.

      • Dinah says:

So many forget when Trump was an avowed atheist. He still is, only using a religion to get votes.

  2. Esmom says:

She is funny and self deprecating. And I’ve always found her warm, too, so I’ve never gotten the criticism.

I think after the third debate people have finally, finally relaxed a bit, knowing there’s no way Trump will win the election. I know I feel a bit lighter after Wed night, too.

    • Sarah says:

I agree with you. I’ve never understood the “she’s so unlikable” stuff. I’ve always thought she’d be a hoot to hang out with.

      • Lightpurple says:

I had the opportunity to sit at a table with her and Barbara Mikulski during a luncheon. She was very personable, wanted to know all about everyone at the table, and once the formalities were out of the way, she just chilled, drank wine with us and added quips as Barbara told hilarious stories about the Senate. Fabulous

      • Bridget says:

That sounds so awesome. Though I’m curious how much $$$ you had to be donating somewhere to be seated at that table 😉

      • Lightpurple says:

@Bridget, $100 to John Kerry’s presidential campaign. Several other democratic women senators attended as well.

      • Veronica says:

I think she tends to come across as uncharismatic in non-candid settings or direct interviews – even my mother, who is HUGE Hillary supporter starting way back in the early 2000s, acknowledges this. She strikes me as more personable when you place her in a more relaxed settings or catch her outside of the political arena. I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing – I think she just tends to be very business oriented when business is actually being done – but we are a shallow species, so it matters more than we like to think. It certainly hasn’t helped that conservatives have been working on undermining her reputation for years in preparation for her presidential run, and just the general misogyny we throw the way of ambitious women.

(It’s also a baffling criticism in a campaign when the opposing candidate is so ridiculously inarticulate and aggressive.)

      • Chewbacca says:

Yeah, considering how much affection she seems to have for ALL the women on SNL who have spoofed her over the years, she’s funny and self deprecating. She seems to be genuinely flattered they would think of it or make the effort. Very classy.

  3. V4Real says:

Every time I see Cardinal Dolan I’m reminded that he was at my college graduation and received a honorary Doctorate.

Trump fell flat as usual. Hillary was on point.

    • Melly says:

Trump had a couple funny moments, like the Melania joke, but he went downhill fast. By the end of his speech I was cringing. I have NEVER heard anyone get boo’d at this dinner!!! Trump didn’t understand the point of the evening. He would have been better off having more self depricating humor to balance out his attacks.
When he started his melania joke and said “Michelle Obama” I got myself ready for a fight. Keep that perfect woman’s name out your mouth, Trump!!!

      • mia girl says:

        Melly-
I had the same reaction when I heard him say Michelle Obama! I was like “oh Hell no” and was relieved and amused at the ultimate end of the joke.

But even still, him saying her name offended me. Her name coming out of that putrid mouth is just not right! Lol.

      • Kitten says:

Remember that long ago we established that Trump projects his own feelings about himself onto others.
Also recall that he called HRC a “nasty woman”.

All hyperbole aside, Trump is truly a NASTY human being.

      • lucy2 says:

I did too, I thought “oh don’t you dare joke about Michelle!” but I did think the crack at Melania’s speech was funny.
His “joke” about Hillary pretending to not “hate Catholics” sucked the air out of the room. His boos were well deserved.

I thought she had some very good zingers, and then wisely closed with a positive but serious message.

      • mayamae says:

Quite a few political wonks stated there has never been booing at this event. And what makes it more interesting is the crowd is overwhelmingly conservative Republicans.

  4. Maya says:

She raised the roof with her jokes – my fav was the Statue of Liberty and that she took performance enhanced drug called preparation.

I am glad to finally see my fellow CB readers starting to like, admire and support Hillary. The debates showed her intelligence, hard work, strength and dignity while yesterday showed her wonderful humour.

America – you are lucky to get this amazing woman as your first female president.

    • LinaLamont says:

I love Michelle Obama (the whole family), but, people forget what a strong, proactive First Lady Hillary was. She wasn’t as stylish as MO, but, damn, she worked hard to get things done– important issues. And, she was excoriated for that.

      nastywomengetshitdone.com

Hillary. Michelle. Elizabeth. Yeah. Great to see and hear them leading the charge. 🙂

    • Lama Bean says:

Performance enhancing drug called preparation had me LOL. I think she was throwing shade beyond just preparation for the Debates in there. I like how she used “performance enhancing ” drug. That makes me think of stamina, which then makes me think of viagra. Then I think of Donald and his age and how he cannot be virile or have the stamina without viagra. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but I’m still cracking myself up.

      • Nasty Little Darling says:

I thought that one was hilarious, the Statue of Liberty one was hilarious. It was nice, in a way, to be able to see everyone laugh.

  5. Jayna says:

Her dress is very flattering on her. Love the color.

Donald was funny for two-thirds of his jokes. Then he began hitting below the belt, went very dark. Once he even started saying ugly things about her and there was no joke. It was so unnecessary and uncomfortable. He was really getting booed. He really screwed up by showing his ugly self yet again, at a charity function no less, and why he is not worthy of being POTUS.

Hillary was great. I give Donald credit. He smiled at all her zingers about him. No glowering. Although, Melania seemed to always be looking at him and his reaction to determine her reaction.

What a sourpuss Rudy Giuliani was. One little joke about him by Hillary, and he was stonefaced.

I would like to add that Hillary’s brief speech at the end was just beautiful and moving and really brought home how different her vision for the country is, and how Donald plays to the underbelly of the Republican base with fear and divisiveness.

    • Nancy says:

I agree. Giuliani used to be cool, right after 9/11. Last few years it’s though he’s a different person. He’s been going after Hillary with a vengeance and she finally got a chance to get him and wow, you’re right, the look on his face. Obviously being around the Dumpster took away any sense of humor he may have had.

      • lucy2 says:

Even if the jokes really do sting, at least fake laugh or smile. He looks like such a grumpy old fart sitting there stone faced while everyone else laughed.

Even Hillary managed to laugh hard at Trump’s jokes, when you know she really wanted to smash his empty orange head into the table over and over.

      • doofus says:

he’s still bitter about the Senate race.

      • Nasty Little Darling says:

As someone who lived and worked and had kids in NYC, 9/11 hit so close to home it was close to where we lived when my son was just a year and the way Giuliani came out and handled all of us during this atrocious crisis, it was so easy in to kind of fall in love with him just for helping us weather the aftermath.

However in the past couple of years this man has truly shown his real self, and I simply can’t condone or endorse him anymore. I think he’s a vile human being and that’s pretty much it, which is sad.

      • susanne says:

Guiliani was never cool. He just happened to be mayor when 9.11 happened.

      • Lama Bean says:

I’m with Susanne. Giuliani was only cool for 9/11. Before and after that he was a jerk. This is nothing new. Lest we all forget he announced he was leaving his wife to the press while she knew nothing of it? His kids don’t even like him.

      • LinaLamont says:

        I agree with @susanne & @Lama Bean

    • LoveIsBlynd says:

As much as I loathe the man, Donald can have good comedic timing and comes off as charismatic. Yuck. However, with his dark personality, his speech writers either passively aggressively loathe him as well, or he goes off script “speaking from the (evil) heart”. While HRC subtly speaks to his misogyny and anti immigration stance by describing how he’d call the Statue of Liberty a “4′, Donald can’t muster up any “wit” and simply calls Hillary “crooked” and “hateful” makes the crowd uncomfortable.

    • Flan says:

Watch the balding guy sitting behind Trump. He pulls a big WTF face at some point when he’s talking.

Guess he thought this would be a dinner filled with light-hearted jokes and not someone just going off on a rant.

  6. lightpurple says:

The facial expressions on the man next to him were everything. Where did that crap about hating Catholics come from? And it looked like the Cardinal was holding her hand through most of his speech.

    • Esmom says:

The “hating Catholics” thing comes from — shocker — one of the wiki leaks emails. She doesn’t hate Catholics — hello, Tim Kaine is Catholic — but Trump bots are trying to see if that might stick.

      • Oya says:

Thanks for explaining this. For a minute I thought this was more Donald-projection and it was a weird revelation that he hated Catholics.

      • boredblond says:

The email was neither to or from HRC..it was from one staffer (who reportedly is Catholic) to another. I honestly didn’t think either were hilarious, but his second half was despicable considering the setting. I loved seeing Maria Bartiromo cracking up at the statue of liberty joke

      • Mathilde says:

The emails were between two Catholics. I’m Catholic and talk like that with other Catholics all the time. It’s what most Catholics do!

  7. Deedee says:

Hillary looked great. Loved the color and the gown.

  8. lizzie says:

this HRC comment slayed: “people look at the statue of liberty and they see a proud symbol, a beacon of hope for people around the world. donald looks at the statue of liberty and sees a 4. maybe a 5 if she loses the torch and tablet and changes her hair” LOL – I DIED.

anyhow – that Melania joke killed b/c the room is full of woman hating jerks. she should still be furious that his team gave her that speech (she did not write it on her own – GIVE ME A BREAk) and then rolled her under the bus after the plagiarism thing happened. now for her husband to further embarrass the crap out of her? i think they will divorce within a year.

    • Jayna says:

Melania is going nowhere. She is how old now, early 50s? Her twitter posts, before he got the nomination, were that of a rich wife and former model, photos centered around her, a hairstyle, vacation, etc. She likes being a trophy wife to a billionaire.

      • Christin says:

Supposedly, she’s 46. I always think she’s older than that.

      • swak says:

I have always said, that if/when he loses he will dump her as fast as he can and will blame her for losing. She’ll never file because she likes the life style too much.

      • Minxx says:

She’s 46, I believe. Which in Donald’s world means she’s WAY past her expiration date..

      • lucy2 says:

She probably liked it when he was just the “billionaire” reality tv guy and she didn’t have to be anything but the trophy wife.
She probably has NOT enjoyed all his dirty laundry being aired once he decided to run for office. His brand is taking a hit, his grossness towards women has been headline news, he’s the new figurehead of racism, and her whole history has been called into question, not to mention the plagiarism embarrassment.

      • LoveIsBlynd says:

I don’t love nor approve of this dynamic, but she’s a perfect wife for this type of man. She cues off of him for all affect, obviously she never disagrees nor causes any “problems”. She may be “expired” to him on a sexual level, but it’s likely he gets his sexual hits elsewhere. I cringe to think of his patriarchal control, but for whatever reason she seems to roll. I would be a shell of an human being and thoroughly depressed in her position, but who knows if this type of controlling relationship is her soul’s calling?

    • jwoolman says:

Yea, he really should have left Melania out of it. She’s probably hurting enough from all the jokes on comedy shows about it.

  9. Who says says:

Donald Trump and his supporters claim the media is out to get him, they are working for Hillary, but he seems to be doing a good job of digging his own grave without the help of the media.

    • Christin says:

A former McCain campaigner said today that when you realize you’re losing, you must decide how you’re going to do it. He’s decided to go down in flames versus a graceful, soft landing.

  10. jferber says:

Hillary slayed, as always. Did anyone else notice Hillary seemed to be wearing the same exact shade of pink Melania did during the second debate? Significant or not?

    • Kitten says:

Yeah I noticed the same thing right away..
But I’m going to go with *insignificant* simply because fuschia is a really hot color right now.
That makes me happy because I absolutely love fuschia and magenta. Hate every other shade of pink though.

  11. minx says:

He started off mildly amusing; then he degenerated into his usual ill-tempered bombast.

  12. Giddy says:

I was surprised that Donald had some good jokes, but when he began attacking HRC his mean temper was on full display. To have that particular group boo is pretty bad. But I love this: the Daily Mail has a bunch of photos from the dinner. In a couple of them Donald’s mask drops and you see him staring at HRC with extreme dislike. Even better, his combover failed him! In several pictures the combover and the bald scalp are easy to see! HA!!!

    • susanne says:

I could not stop looking at that bit of untamed hamster fur. On his left, toward the back of his ‘crown’. Kinda felt bad for a second. Like if my skirt was tucked into my undies.
The beginning of his speech, people were laughing, and I honestly don’t believe Trump thought he was telling a joke.

  13. Jezi says:

It was so disappointing to see that he didn’t get the purpose of the dinner and went off the rails once again. I was actually surprised that he was so funny in the first half of his speech. He should’ve stopped at the Melania joke because that seemed like it was where the comedy writer stopped and Donald took over. Like I can legit see someone writing it for him and him saying he wanted to add in his own jokes and then it was bad. Just awkward and uncomfortable for everyone in the room. The cardinal was disgusted and turned away from him. He laughed at Hillary’s jokes but you know damn well that the car ride home was hell for Melania. I hope she is smart to divorce him after all this. She seems like a prisoner.

    • Kitten says:

Exactly. This man needs to always stay on script because we know what happens when the train goes off the tracks.

    • Melly says:

The big problem with Trump’s speech was the lack of balance. He didn’t have enough self deprecating humor to justify to harsh attacks on Hillary. He made a joke about him being modest and a joke about Melania and that’s it. If he went hard on himself then went hard on Hillary, it probably would have had a different response. He just showed that he doesn’t have a sense of humor, and humor can be an important aspect of leadership. The overall message of his speech wasn’t inspirational or positive. Only Trump supporters wants to listen to a dooms day speech.
Also shows that most comedy writers are democrats.

    • Christin says:

WaPo posted a story today about his first forays into D.C. area real estate in the 1970s.

He tried to help his father rent apartments to lower income residents. One gentleman who witnessed his repeated efforts (via talking to groups of potential residents) said DT just ticked off people. Every time.

  14. jferber says:

I think Melania will not be divorcing him. If anything, he’d divorce her, or just continue with the “open marriage” (open for him, but not for her). She’s probably glad he’s lavishing his sexual attentions elsewhere (at least some of his sexual activities are consensual, I’d imagine), Before judging Melania, I’d like to see all that she gets out of this bargain. How much time does she really have to spend with him now?

    • Christin says:

My guess is that they have little interaction. Even if he does come back to the gold-covered apartment at night, I would say they maintain separate quarters and schedules.

      • Lama Bean says:

Agreed. I think she may have a lovah on the side. I don’t think he has stamina to have a side piece.

      • Ennie says:

I had an uncle, husband of one of
My father’s sisters. He was very handsome, rich, nice family, tall and with European descent, a “real catch” in my hometown of old, decades ago but he did really really got around, he was married to my aunt for 75 years, but he mostly wh*red around many of those years. I heard stories when I grew up of how he felt
Entitled To touch unsuspecting women and propose sex to even his own sisters in law. In his very old age he had helpers, or probably one of my male cousins taking him to visit some “ladies”. It was kind of sick.
If trump has a side piece, it will be more for
His ego than his pleasure, and stamina be damned, the “ver beautiful” women that he favors will be getting paid somehow.

  15. SusanneToo says:

The always classy donald. What a surprise. Not.

  16. neelyo says:

Saw it on MSNBC and Al Franken pointed out before Hillary’s speech that he was interested to see if Trump laughed because he’d never seen him do so. I didn’t see him laugh but he did do that smug bullfrog smile he always does. I wish they’d shown his reaction to the Bloomberg joke because I’m sure that must have angered him.

The best though was Ghouliani. What a humorless loser. There was a great rundown on The Daily Beast of all of the people who have supported Trump who should be shunned after the election. Christie, Pence, Kellyanne Conway, that Breitbart guy, etc. have damaged our democracy and it shouldn’t be forgotten.

    • PunkyMomma says:

      smug bullfrog 😂😂😂

Ghouliani looked like Grumpy Cat (no offense to GC).

      • JudyK says:

LOL @ “Ghouliani”…love that. He gets the award for humorless Sourpuss of the evening.

      • Giddy says:

On MSNBC one commenter said that Ghouliani😉 should have had enough experience to know that the camera would switch to him after that joke. He looked malignantly angry. Maybe he now can see the damage he has done to his reputation by his full throated support for the Trumpster.

    • lucy2 says:

I remember a couple of years ago at the White House Correspondents Dinner, Obama did a bunch of jokes about Trump and he sat there like an orange grumpy turd. I expected him to do the same again here but I think his campaign must have drilled it into his head that he had to at least appear like he was laughing.

      • Lama Bean says:

A common opinion is that the 2011 WHCD (where Obama roasted trump) is where Trump really decided to do this presidential run.

    • isabelle says:

He is completely void of humor he doesn’t laugh and can’t make other people laugh . He doesn’t even make an attempt at it and seems to not understand its function in human interaction. He is serious all the time and intense on top of it. Completely humorless and that actually bothers me a lot. Humor is one of the top things you need as a leader, if not behind intelligence/wisdom. Its very important in breaking tension, getting important across without upsetting people, and makes for a level play ground. Its extremely important and he has none, zero.

      • Lady D says:

Agree about the sense of humour being of utmost importance. I switched doctors once because she had no sense of humour whatsoever. Personally, it disturbs me when someone has no sense of humour. I don’t know how to respond to people like that. It’s the same with people who don’t like dogs. I just can’t relate.

  17. LiterallyaShambles says:

CNN said it was unprecedented for a candidate to be booed at the Al Smith dinner. A historic election on all counts. I’m rooting for you, Madame President.

    • minx says:

I remember Obama and and McCain at this dinner in 2008, and Obama and Romney in 2012. There was mild roasting but they were civilized and friendly for the cameras.
      Trump has no class.

      • lucy2 says:

I disliked Romney in 2012 and was happy he didn’t win, but he looks like such a gentleman now in comparison.

      • Melly says:

Romney made an important point during his speech at that dinner. He said that even if you have political differences you still should have respect for the person. Politics isn’t everything. Maybe Trump should have listened to past speeches before he got up there to do a Comedy Central meets dooms day scenario roast.

  18. Eden75 says:

Trump was doing well right up until the Melania joke. I can’t believe that he went off the rails so bad after that. I was actually pretty impressed up until then. Hilary was laughing, even at a couple of the harsher ones. But wow, dude, you should have shut up after you asked the cardinal to talk to your wife. He always ends up going too far. How does his team let that happen????

She had a couple that didn’t do as well and a couple that were really harsh, yet hilarious. I will give Trump credit for laughing at the harsh ones. I do love her gentle jab at the 16 minute mark, very well done. Giuliani though? That man needs to get a sense of humour.

    • JurisGal says:

Eden: : I loved how stonefaced Guliani was, he must still be seething over Bloomberg, too. Guiliani is a joke.

  19. Robot Dog says:

The StAtue of Liberty joke was perfection on so many levels. There was the jab at his misogyny, but it also called out that in general Trump only cares about the part of America that fits his peabrained, hatefully narrow idea of what America should be. It tied in really well with Michelle’s amazing speech in AZ about who gets left out of Trump’s America.

Between HRC and MIchelle, Thursday was a great day for nasty women.

    • susanne says:

      Yes, Robot Dog!
I’m going to one of those dorky pottery places and making a nasty women mug.

    • mayamae says:

Are we reclaiming the word “nasty” as strong women? Fine by me. I wanted a bumper sticker inspired by RuPaul – HRC: Badass Bitch.

  20. Christin says:

Talk about ‘word vomit’. He just could not stop, even after the booing started.

    • Melly says:

When he said “I don’t know if they’re booing me or you Hillary”, I literally screamed at my TV “They’re booing you, you F#%ing moron!!!!”

  21. linabear says:

Hillary was booed too at 13:10. I’m a lifelong democrat and HRC supporter, but just saying.

    • Christin says:

I watched most of it last night, and I didn’t think either of them were as smooth as past participants (footage was shown of several past ‘roasts’ by candidates since the 1980s).

    • JudyK says:

I’m a Democrat, too, but they both got a little too mean instead of making it the self-deprecating humor it’s intended to be for this particular event.

      • hmmm says:

I dare anyone to be that gracious and light-hearted after all his vile shenanigans against the Clintons and democracy. She was civil enough for me. I would want to smack him around he is so loathsome. He’s not even fit to kiss the hem of her skirt.

This dinner once again proved to me that Hillary has a heart and soul and feels things, is human, and that he is completely repugnant without humanity or decency.

She slayed him once again, with words. In public. I’m happy.

      • Melly says:

        I agree hmmm
A week before the dinner Trump literally called her the devil who has nothing but hate in her heart. Just the day before he called her a nasty woman. I think she was civil enough. Trump doesn’t deserve any better.

    • susanne says:

      I’m done at ‘devil.’
I know anywhere else I’d be roasted, but it’s because she is a woman that she can’t get as nasty as El Cheeto.

  22. jferber says:

I just realized that at 46, Melania is too old for Trump. They probably haven’t had sex since after the birth of Barron. She was dumping-age when she got pregnant (35), but the baby sealed the deal. She probably does have very little interaction with him now, which must be truly a blessing for her. I’d actually buy the coffee table book of Melania’s fabulous life (only if the Donald never appeared in it and the money truly went to charity).

    • Tiffany says:

I noticed at the end of the final debate that Melania did not kiss Casino Tangerine like the previous two. They are done. She is living on the same floor as Barron. I think she is waiting for him to file so she can clean his clock in court. She knows where the bodies are buried and damn sure is not going to sign a DNC agreement.

      • isabelle says:

She was definitely cold toward him and did kiss him at the first one. Their body language was very off.

      • Christin says:

She repeats that she is ‘independent’ in interviews, and often pivots back to herself and how things affect her. She’s repeatedly said that her focus is raising their son.

I think it’s possible this translates to having very little to do with her husband. He’s on record as saying he likes ‘no maintenance’ women, in terms of what they demand of his time and attention.

He has so many court appearances coming up, a divorce might not be scheduled until 2018.

  23. Karina says:

I had a hard time watching Donald speak. The lady behind him kept taking her gloves on and off. That’s what caught my attention.

Speaking about carpenters, did he ever pay those undocumented ones who worked on building Trump Towers?

  24. Eric says:

Even if HRC got booed, prepare to celebrate the Nasty Woman–Madame President if your Nasty!

    • susanne says:

I actually thought some of the ‘boos’ were ‘oohs,’ like, ‘that’s low, sister, but yeaaaah.’

    • LinaLamont says:

Google Rep. Brian Babin’s (R-Texas) comment about “nasty woman”.

      • Lightpurple says:

“I’m a genteel Southerner, Alan, I think sometimes a lady needs to be told when she is being nasty.”

Well, Brian, I’m Boston strong and sometimes I think a self-proclaimed genteel Southerner needs to be told he is a sexist jerk who has no place in the US Congress. I will be delivering exactly that message to your staff in both your DC and district offices by phone, by email, and by actual letter AND I will be making a contribution to your opponent.

      • LinaLamont says:

        @Lightpurple
        As a big-mouth NYer, I applaud you.

        nastywomengetshitdone.com

  25. aang says:

Did anyone else notice the chilly body language by Governor Cuomo towards Mayor de Blasio? Cuomo angled his body away and wouldn’t look at him even when de Blasio was taking to him.

    • LinaLamont says:

It’s no secret that they hate each other.

      • SMD says:

Lina Lamont and Light Purple, Trump lost a lot of conservative women voters in GA with that leaked tape. Why? Not because he is a sexist, racist, blustering xenophobic narccisti, but he used the Pu $$+ word. Seriously, that is so crude, vulgar and off limits even in private “locker room talk,” Lots of clutching of pearls and praying for DT but as my mother in law and her ladies prayer club decided, he really has no class. OK ladies if that’s what it took. Eyeroll!!

    • Tina says:

That was one of Hillary’s better jokes, when she talked about bringing mortal enemies together and mentioned Cuomo and de Blasio (it seemed to be about her and Trump at first).

    • aang says:

I know they have been feuding but I was surprised the Governor acted like such a jerk. I just expected professional behavior, not mean girl stuff.

  26. Minxx says:

“Donald really is as healthy as a horse, you know the one Vladimir Putin rides around on”.. I love her! 🙂

  27. Lilly says:

Does anyone else see the unbelievable hypocrisy of this event?? I have not seen a comment about it anywhere other than a tweet from one NYT reporter.
A bunch of religious leaders who hide buried stories for decades of unbelievable abuse in their church, hosting an admitted sexual predator who is the nominee of a major political party for the most important position in the country???? Meanwhile speaking like they are holy and wonderful people??
Everyone is all dressed up and laughing and slapping each other on the back, while abuse victims of not only the clergy of this church, but also the republican candidate are damaged for life.
    Why is this ok???

    • Kitten says:

      I think I love you….

    • Melly says:

      #ImWithLilly

    • susanne says:

If you will provide receipts I will be your bff. Seriously.

    • Goo says:

Lilly, you forgot the abuse victims of Hillarys’ husband Bill….

    • cindyp says:

Totally agree. Cardinal Dolan is a horrible person. When he was in WI he protected child molester priests & hid money from families that won lawsuits. He should be in prison himself or in exile with Cardinal Law in Rome. The hypocrisy of the Catholic Church is beyond the pale.

    • ataylor says:

Um. They’re not celebrating each other. It’s a charity dinner where the proceeds go to Catholic Charities of America. Yes, formed by the Catholic Church, but an organization that provides food, housing, medical services, and additional assistance to lower-income families, the sick, undocumented and the flat-out poor. My elderly neighbor, who ISN’T a Catholic by the way, gets her ridiculously expensive medications that aren’t covered by medicaid or medicare or SS (and Dr appointments) from them for FREE.

But way to miss the point of the event…

      • cindyp says:

Sorry, the fact that the church can get a bunch of rich people together to give money doesn’t excuse decades of sexual abuse & discrimination of LGBT people. The sight of Cardinal Dolan being treated with just reverence is just nauseating to me.

  28. SMD says:

DT can’t hold it together on home turf for a dinner. He can’t even fake his way through it. How in the world are you going to deal with contentious senate/house meetings, policy discussions that get heated with other world leaders? What part of the Presidents job are you remotely qualified for? This is not a TV show where bits and pieces are pulled together to make a coherent 15 minute segment. You have to be coherent and prepared always!!!@@

  29. SMD says:

Lilly, you got it. One reason I left the church. It doesn’t represent anything I believe in or know to be true. The old guard are shaking in their shoes, the outsider DT who they thought could take down HRC has instead shown every single disgusting belief they hold. DT has done irreversible damage to the Republican party. But they created this monster so they have no one else to blame! The fallout from this election will be talked about for years, I think it’s a historical turning point. The minority and women voting blocks are now powerful enough to sway an election. Indeed the bad hombres and nasty women will be Trumps Achilles heel, so fitting!

  30. Jayna says:

I’m really surprised there’s not more mention of her speech at the end. It’s really one of her best. I was very moved.

    • lightpurple says:

It was really well done and captured the spirit of the event and the message of Al Smith, as well as the caring message of Pope Francis.

  31. Elle says:

So I hate Trump with a passion that borders on unhealthy, but I watched both speeches, and I was shocked at his inability to read a room. For a guy who has spent so much of his life in front of cameras and as a business leader (even if purchased by daddy), his inability to relate to the crowd was bizarre. I’ve attended my share of charity dinners (much less prestigious) and have heard any number of business leaders, etc. talk and I can’t remember another person that even comes close to level of tone deafness of Trump’s remarks.

Also: I liked that Hillary copped to having speechwriters. Given their schedules, it’s insane to pretend any candidate has time to do everything, and to me, someone capable of delegating tasks to well-qualified individuals says loads about her ability to lead.

    • Alix says:

I’m very glad that HRC (or one of her advisers) nixed the idea of a “yo mama” joke from her speechwriters. Yikes.

And I join you, @Elle, in a visceral, passionate hatred of Trump. He’s never had to learn how to read a room, or develop even the most basic social skills, because he inherited Daddy’s mega-millions. I generally believe that every human life has value, but he’s really pushing me on that point.

  32. Guesto says:

I’m glad he remained true to himself. It confirms him as a man who has (a) no sense of humour and (b) absolutely no sense of propriety. And that can only be a good thing at this late stage of the game.

    @Lilly – brava. It’s such a tainted event. But then, American politics….

  33. gwen says:

With all the money Trump has you’d think he could buy a sense of humor.

  34. Soror Bro says:

There were some amusing lines from both of them. But Trump gave me the biggest laugh this week when he said ” I’ll accept the election result….if I win”

Although, not to be outdone, other political figures and the MSM tossed in a few zingers of their own over Trump’s claim that the election is rigged. Some said that Trump’s comments undermine democracy. Obama said that Trump’s comments sow the seeds of doubt in people’s minds about the integrity of U.S elections.

Oh stop it, guys. You’re killing me. 😆

  35. liz_bee says:

Trump looks like a GD penguin. Why does he insist on wearing ill-fitting clothing? I know he’s kinda overweight, but his pantsuits look like pajamas. I realize this is the LEAST horrible thing about him, but I’m sick of people dissecting HRC’s clothing choices and totally ignoring Trump’s tent suits.

    • Betsy says:

He’s got little man syndrome. You can be any size, so long as you think you should be significantly taller/more built, and you purchase clothes sized for this significantly taller/more built version of your self. I’ve done the same when it’s gaining weight syndrome; it’s basically a denial of reality.

      • Soror Bro says:

“It’s basically a denial of reality”

That pretty much sums up the way I feel about this election. The reality is regardless of who wins the system will continue to be rigged in favour of the moneyed interests. The military industrial complex will continue to export death, destruction and misery with the full backing of the government as the government pays lip service about striving for peace. And of course the general public will act like it’s not happening. Denial of reality indeed.

    • Alix says:

Don’t forget the extra-looooong ties! I’ve said this before, but — I’d pay serious money for a Tim Gunn analysis of Trump’s attire (and general loathesomeness).

      • LinaLamont says:

Tim Gunn’s a clueless shallow moron. I remember when he commented on HRC in 2011…’cause, she spent too much time on work as Secretary of State and not enough time on fashion. I was disgusted when he gave his idiotic opinion.

“Why must she dress that way? I think she’s confused about her gender [with] all these big, baggy, menswear tailored pantsuits.”
        Yeah…He’s the epitome of maleness.

“I have a great respect for her intellect and her tenacity and for what she does for our country in her governmental role. I just wish she could send a stronger message about American fashion.”
Yeah…Her priorities are screwed up. They killed Bin Laden less than 2 months earlier than this interview.

        He wasn’t joking.

  36. Lightpurple says:

Members of Al Smith’s family are saying Trump crossed the line with his comment about Catholics and ruined the tone of the evening; that Hillary was wonderful; and would have gotten more laughs and applause if everyone wasn’t upset and made uncomfortable by Trump.

  37. Sara says:

I cannot stand Trump, however he is right when he does say the media is on Clintons side because the live version and replayed version are very different. The replayed one edited out HRC’s stumble to the podium.

    • JurisGal says:

Yes Sara, that proves the “media” is favoring Sec Clinton! What a ridiculous comment. Everything isn’t collusion or a conspiracy.

      • sara says:

        Jurisgal:

Then why is every video edited out!! Maybe if you opened up your eyes you would really see the actual truth.

      • Ange says:

Because a stumble doesn’t mean a damn thing perhaps????

      • JurisGal says:

Sara: Move away from the rhetoric and personal attacks –attacking those who do not agree with you does nothing to shore up a position, if you can call what you have a position. My eyes are open and they see ( even via the Internet) someone who is reaching for something that is not there. Who cares if someone trips? Let’s call for drug tests for everyone who trips! Let’s test the fitness to do anything for everyone who trips! Where , dare I ask, are you going with tripgate?
The ” actual truth”? What does that even mean? Someone tripped. Is that what people are basing their votes on ? Again, everything isn’t a conspiracy.
The same ” media” that spent countless hours on Benghazi and emails is biased toward HRC?
“Rigged?” That is just ” sad!”
Or, to borrow again from Trump, how ” corny” – such a stale position.

        To Ange: +1

    • Soror Bro says:

“We report. You decide. But we decide what to report.”

Anyone who thinks they’re making informed decisions based on the information thejy get from the MSM is kidding themself.

  38. Sara says:

    Duplicate post

  39. SMD says:

Holy heck Sara! She stumbled in a long dress and heels?!. OMG! That’s huge. I mean Jennifer Lawrence stumbles and falls all the time and she’s 30+ years younger..but you know a media conspiracy. Sigh.

  40. Hazel says:

I got the impression that Trump hadn’t even seen the speech before he read it.

  41. Ennie says:

Salma Hayek also came out with a story about Trump:
    http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_580a877fe4b0cdea3d879968

She says that he wanted to go out with her when she was with someone, and his vindictiveness when she turned him down.

  42. Miss Tahuna says:

I have a friend who has a special ability to “predict the future” by looking at someone’s face. Yesterday she came to my room when I was watching the news about american election from youtube. When she saw Trump’s speaking (at one of his campaign) she said, “Oh, the new president of USA.” I was shocked and thought she was just joking.
I told her that the man is a candidate of USA president and his name is Donald Trump. We both Asian who live in south east asia, my friend doesn’t know Donald Trump, I know him because i watched Apprentice and youtube. My friend usually right when she predicts something but I really hope this time she’s wrong.

  43. India Andrews says:

Both of them had their moments but neither one of them ran away with it.

  44. Ennie says:

In regards of the “bad hombres” and the hispanic /Latino vote, John Leguizamo wrote this essay, very nice and interesting:
    http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/21/opinion/too-bad-youre-latin.html?ref=oembed&_r=0

  45. Dinah says:

Donald Trump has never had a friend in his life. A user never does.

  46. Karina says:

Who was the lady in the red gown with a low-cut neckline behind the podium? She kept removing her gloves and texting on and off throughout Donald’s speech. Ugh. The strangest things can be distracting during a vile speech. Donald got booed…and there is more to come on November 8th.
