Scarlett Johansson’s gourmet popcorn shop in Paris is a success, maybe

The things we do for love! In Scarlett Johansson’s case, what she does for love is “open a gourmet popcorn shop in France.” ScarJo married her French husband Romain Dauriac a few years back, and they split their time between America and France. I guess Romain’s sister needed a job and Scarlett has been looking for a good popcorn place in Paris, so they decided to go into business together. The shop – called Yummy Pop – had a “soft opening” on Saturday, and these are some photos from the opening.

Scarlett, Romain and Romain’s sister all worked behind the counter for the opening. Scarlett even wore an apron! How quaint. Judging solely from the photos, it doesn’t look like Romain was helping much – he doesn’t seem to be dealing with the popcorn, nor working the register. He must be “managing” the ladies. It’s also being said that there will be a “grand opening” at a later date. Hm…

As we discussed last week, I don’t have a problem with gourmet popcorn in general, although let’s face it: popcorn is one of those things that’s super-easy to make at home. I guess the French don’t have the relationship with popcorn that we do, which is why it sort of pains me that Yummy Pop doesn’t seem to offer a really standard “light butter and salt” option. No, the Yummy Pop flavors are “Real Vermont Maple” and “Strawberries and Cream” and “Chocolate Covered Strawberries.” Will this be a success? Will real Parisians love American-style gourmet popcorn? Or will it just be popular with tourists?

We’ve got a pretty good relationship with popcorn I’d say… Not as good as Americans obviously, but we’re not completely lost on it.
I’m actually a bit lost on the thought of gourmet popcorn, imagine the prices. Do you it with a fork?

I would imagine it’s meant as finger food; however, I am American and a popcorn junkie, and I always eat my popcorn with a spoon. My kids and husband have teased me about this for years. I love caramel corn, cheese corn, or even just plain buttery popcorn, but I can’t stand to get my hands messy, so out comes the spoon! 🙂

I was at the Mark Twain Prize last night and gourmet popcorn was served at the fancy after party.

We have a fabulous gourmet popcorn place called Premier Popcorn. It’s amazing. They did our wedding favors because we had a fall wedding. Candy apple caramel popcorn or Parmesan truffle popcorn may sound weird, but it’s pretty darn delicious. Peppermint white chocolate or candied pumpkin spice makes a good gift alternative to peppermint bark. I don’t know about you all, but I would never take the time to make all of it myself and wrap it in a pretty tin and everything. It seems like a very American thing though. She looks stunning in these pictures! Wow.

It’s funny because people tell me I look like Scarlett and most of the time I don’t agree, but in these pics I can see the resemblance. Maybe because she looks like a regular person (making faces) and not like a glam pinup?

    • teacakes says:

@lannisterforever I actually think she’s gorgeous (her face that is) in these pics, so if you look like her as she is here, you’re probably gorgeous too.

For roughly $7USD a bag I hope it tastes really good, I’d be willing to try it at least once….

  4. Lightpurple says:

She must have a good relationship with her sister-in-law if they’re willing to start a business together

The French don’t view popcorn the way we do. In fact they’re flavor is sucre which is weird. But I’m guessing it’s a hit with tourists, hence why it’s open in the most touristy area of Paris. People probably showed up to get a glimpse of her. Plus it’s Toussaint holiday (two week October vacation) most Parisians are out of town. Kind of dumb to hold your grand opening when most people left for vacation.

    • Coconut says:

The article says this was the *soft* opening, meaning you’re open but you may still be working out some kinks (small problems). In a few weeks or months, you have your *grand* opening, once things are running smoothly.

“Yummy Pop” sounds….inexpensive…like a children’s Air Popcorn machine with a booklet of “15 fun recipes to try.”

I love jalapeno and white cheddar popcorn so if I’m ever in Paris I would pop in (see what i did there?) and see what she’s offering.

  7. Hollz says:

I keep thinking that Yummy Pop is the name of a lollipop company. And then thinking, haha, she’s a sucker.

    • Mel M says:

Yeah the name is so lame. They couldn’t have thought of something better? More catchy and less obvious. It just sounds like a last minute decision that wasn’t really given any thought.

    That haircut…so bad

  9. paolanqar says:

Maybe. But have you seen those prices??

  10. Ice247 says:

Wait… Aren’t they divorced yet? Seriously, everytime I see pics of them they look so miserable and barely interacting with each other. Guess money is the new true love

  11. Angel says:

In France.. must wear Breton top. That’s all I got:)

  12. Mar says:

Candy and confections is big business in Paris so I could see this doing well.

I think popcorn is having a resurgence or whatever, because when I go shopping I now see tons of brands and tons of flavors. Even the full fat non diet flavors give better numbers than most chips or other bad for you snacks. I’m sort of psyched that there is another healthier option out there, but damn those hulls in my teeth

    • chaine says:

IDK. I have been buying bagged popcorn for several years thinking of it as a healthy snack. I probably eat three or four (popped) cups a day. Lately, my weight has been ballooning, and I surveyed my diet and learned that the popcorn I was eating was an incredibly high-carb food. I cut it out entirely and have lost like five pounds just from stopping eating it.

  14. elisha says:

Why is it so dark in there? WHy does she look like Kate GOsselin?

  15. Gippy says:

Indiana girl here – we’re serious about our popcorn! We even had my grandma’s homemade popcorn for party favors at our wedding. Nothing better than fresh, hot popcorn – that’s my main problem with these gourmet popcorn places, it’s never fresh enough! That being said, I’d still try some of their popcorn $7 isn’t any more than you pay in Chicago 🙂
