Sophie Hunter in a caped Valentino sack dress at UK premiere: hot or not?

wenn29907909

I used to say this all the time, but Sophie Hunter looks so much like Catherine Keener, right? It’s happening again in these photos from the London premiere/screening of Doctor Strange. After joining her Cumberhusband at the LA premiere late last week, Sophie and Benedict Cumberbatch are back in the UK. I’m guessing that Benedict will probably make it to a few more countries this week, then he’s off to New York next week to prepare for Saturday Night Live and his first time hosting that show. I don’t know what to expect there – he’s a proper theatre actor so he knows how to do live performances. But I suspect that some of the skits might be awful.

As for these photos photos… Sophie, I believe, was trying to stylistically channel Doctor Strange’s cape, maybe. Her dress is Valentino, one of her favorite labels – she wore a few Valentino gowns in 2014/15, and she had a custom-made Valentino wedding gown in 2015 too. I like the bold hot-pink and I don’t mind all of the fabric and the cape. If she wants to wear a sack dress, so be it, she’s pregnant and entitled. The one thing I would change would be the high neck – with that much fabric going on, the mock-turtle isn’t necessary. Her makeup is fine and the matchy heels are… inoffensive but not great. I think she spilled something on her dress too? That sucks. Benedict also wore Valentino!

What else? Benedict did a Q&A session with the Guardian where fans submitted questions or something. I skimmed this – go here to read. Bendy is so tame these days.

I do like that Sophie is looking especially loved-up in these photos. Non-alcoholic Comet Sophies for everyone!

    No.

Usually her dresses are fine. This one? No.

    • LoveIsBlynd says:

Wow, I love it. The bright pink is a contrast to the nun shape. Not just any personality could pull this off, but she has hipster sexy. It works.

  2. SM says:

Awful dress. Not even pregnancy is an excuse for that.

    • Sasha says:

Pregnancy is most definitely excuse to wear just about anything. ))
I am not a fan of the dress. I don’t even know what the designer was thinking. But the color is nice.

Cumby looks great in a suit.

      • Cee says:

She was very very pregnant at the Oscars and even though I hated her styling the red dress was better. Or even the one she wore to the Globes or similar.
This is just a hot pink sack.

      • lightpurple says:

@Cee, she was second trimester at the Oscars on February 22, 2015. The kid wasn’t born until June.

      • Cee says:

Late 2nd/early 3rd. Still super pregnant. I don’t think she was papped off the RC, right? Unless you count that pap walk in London that was published here and she looked ready to give birth and be done.

  3. Freespirited says:

I think she looks more like a cross between Vera Farmiga and Catriona Balfe.

    The dress is a no.

    • lannisterforever says:

OMG spot on (with the resamblance)! I also happen to think she’s very pretty and find it odd so many people consider her plain.

      • Sullivan says:

I think she’s pretty. An English Rose type.
The dress isn’t hideous, it’s just not… anything.

    • Sabrine says:

The dress is a gorgeous color and looks good on a pregnant lady. I might have changed the neckline as it’s a bit too much. The body language is unmistakable. These two only have eyes for each other.

      • nmoley says:

”These two only have eyes for each other. ”
Meh. She’s smiling. He’s being polite.

      • LiterallyaShambles says:

I guess by impregnating her twice he was also just being polite?

      • nmoley says:

Well, he’s a very polite guy, isn’t he? Would never say no to a lady:)

      • MI6 says:

        Literallyashambles: that was classic 😅
Yeah, you know those Brits. Polite to a fault. Or a pregnancy.
It doesn’t matter what she’s wearing. They are clearly in love. Good for them!

      • Cee says:

lol I’m sure he tripped over her and now she’s pregnant again.

    • Sasha says:

She reminds me the Queen Elizabeth’s sisters. They look so alike, she could be one of them.

  4. shelly* says:

I’m getting a Vatican Cardinal vibe off that dress. She has a lovely figure, its a shame to swamp it with all that fabric.

    • Elaine says:

I was getting a vintage Red Cross nurse’s cape crossed with a nun’s habit vibe from the style of the dress, but I can see where you got the Cardinal. I don’t hate the pink, but red shoes? She dresses to confound anyone who sees her. (The white Valentino tent with the black heels she wore to a fashion show is burned onto my retinas).

Could someone explain “loved up”? Knocked up, I get, but “loved up”, not so much.

  5. freebunny says:

This dress is only good if you’re 8 months preggnant or 80 years old.
But Lady Cumberbatch never knew how to dress.

  6. Jamie says:

She’s beautiful. Glowing. I love the color of the dress. It works for her.

    • Chetta B. says:

I love it as well. Classy and different.

    • Josephine says:

Thank goodness someone else likes it. I think it’s cool. The color is great and the shoes are fun. It’s demure, but not every dress needs to show off her figure. I think she looks classy and I would think that the dress would be great if the pregnancy is making her feel lousy.

    • Snazzy says:

      I love it too 🙂

  7. AG-UK says:

The colour yes the style not so much.. if it were more fitted or not so billowy would be better.

  8. Stella in NH says:

She probably wanted to be comfortable. I bet it has pockets!

    • Janetdr says:

I love pockets! I love this color and think the shoes blend okay. The dress does seem kind of huge for this early on.

  9. grabbyhands says:

I would agree with Kaiser that the dress would have been saved by a different neckline-a boat neckline or maybe something nearly off the shoulder. She looks a little frumpy here. I hate hot pink, though.

  10. Deanna says:

Is there a big stain or her chest, or is it just the lighting? edit: oops, just noticed that Kaiser noticed it too.

I like the colour, but not the style.

    • lightpurple says:

There is a big stain on her dress. And were it me, I either would not be posing for pictures or I would be posing in such a way that the stain wasn’t front and center, even if it meant making him stand in front of me a little.

  11. lightpurple says:

Comet Sophies Shoutout! But I’m keeping the absinthe and vodka in mine.

  12. AnnaKist says:

Dress: Not hot. The colour is lovely on her, though.

It’s just hit me how much she looks like my sister-in-law. On the other hand, she and hubby are starting to look like brother and sister.

    • freebunny says:

There’s some theory about how you marry someone who looks like you.
I think she shares a lot of common traits with BC, not always the most flattering, but sadly for her, not his talent.

  13. Lennox says:

If only Solange had worn this.

  14. MissMerry says:

they look like siblings, and that makes me uncomfortable…

    • tundra says:

@missmerry exactly! I thought the same. They are like twin or something. And I don’t even mean to be mean. Actually I only know them through tom (Interview for war horse).
But all the best wishes for their baby! 🙂 <3

  15. Lindy79 says:

I like the colour and her hair and make up look nice too. Shape isnt great but shes pregnant so meh…

Benny was on this morning (like gma for Britain) and briefly confirmed the pregnancy with his usual enthusiasm 😂

    • j says:

yeah it’s the shape. color, makeup, hair are good imo. but she is pregnant so lol i dont want to judge. comfort is priority #1

    • Bonzo says:

I’m with you… the color looks nice, but the shape isn’t flattering. I like her hair and makeup. I like the red shoes too.

Is Bendy dull as a doorknob now that he’s a family man or what?

  16. kai says:

I don’t know why it bugs me so much that she’s (seemingly) on every carpet with him, but it does. Love the outfit, though.

    • tundra says:

I don’t know, she is his wife. So it’s normal for her to be with him on carpet like other HW couples.

      • seesittellsit says:

@Tundra – Didn’t you get the memo? When other stars’ wives do the natural thing and do the RC with their husbands, it is because they are their wives. When Sophie Hunter does the RC with her husband, it’s famewhoring.

    • Meg D says:

She hardly ever does red carpets with him, mainly only for major awards ceremonies or premieres of films he’s in. So same as basically every single actor’s significant other on the planet. There are tons of actors who do every red carpet around, who show up to every single premiere (of films they are not in), press night, product launch, shop opening, minor awards do, etc. etc. etc.

Having said that it is quite amusing watching the Tumblrites’ increasingly desperate attempts to paint Hunter as some kind of famewhore or villain by pointing out that she does very ordinary things that everyone does. What’s next? Using toothpaste? Breathing?

      • Cee says:

FFS why even go to Tumblr to read the nonsense directed at them? It’s not even fun to read what some people think.

Enough is enough already. Lets stop mentioning the “crazies” and what they do in another site.

      • Sasha says:

Cee, you just talked to the 2 of those tumblr people below. )) They don’t contain themselves just to tumblr.

      • Cee says:

Sasha TY for the heads up. I had my doubts lol I did have fun, though.

  17. nmoley says:

She is smiling to him, and he’s like: it’s really nice of you, dear, you may stop now…

  18. bread says:

A pink dress with red shoes? Yikes! I think it might have looked good on someone else or with a different styling but right now it’s overpowering her in every way an outfit can overpower a person. If only she’d worn her hair up, or pushed her shoulders back, or had any kind of attitude other than that simpering smile she does.
P.S. Did she get lip injections? I remember her being rather more thin-lipped before…

    • freebunny says:

You may be right about the lip injection, or maybe it’s just the make up.

    • SusanneToo says:

Her lips look the same to me. I’ve always liked her loose, not overdone hairstyle, it looks great, imo.

  19. tundra says:

am I the only one wondering where Bc’s eye brow went? Cause I am not seeing any of em. lol

  20. seesittellsit says:

Not. Not. Not. Not. How could a woman who showed up in that beautiful black strapless gown a week earlier leave the house dressed like this? Does she have some evil fashion doppelganger who takes over every other time? She looks like a can of paint with a head stuck on it. Just awful.

    • Bonzo says:

That black dress was lovely. She is hit and miss with her fashion choices, mostly miss with a few notable hits.

    • Cee says:

I think his stylist is styling her thus all the hits and misses. During his Oscar campaign she had some truly hideous dresses while some were beautiful. She should try Packham! But I guess she wears what she is loaned/given. At least she’s tall enough to pull most of the dresses off.

  21. Joh18 says:

Did she mourned Pete Burns passing by her awful dress and heavy makeup in Westminster Abbey?

  22. nmoley says:

On the whole, when did he become so lizardly and ugly? He used to be beau-laid, beautifully-ugly, but now only the second part is true…:(

    • hermia says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one to see that. He used to be jolie-laide, and now he’s just plain ugly. I really don’t know what happened and I am puzzled. Age caught up with him already? Answers on a postcard 🙂

      • Sasha says:

That is why both of you comment exclusively on Cumby articles. He is so ugly, yet you can’t let him go. ))
I think somebody protests too much.

I personally think he has charisma that more than makes up for his unusual (we’ll call them that ) looks. But either way – beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There is more to it than just regular features.

      • hermia says:

Perhaps because we are so disappointed that he’s lost his looks? I do tend to be sorry when that happens, but that’s just me. I felt the same about Hugh Grant 🙂
I still love Sherlock, so I sort of read and comment, a bit here and there not always.
I’m finding that the super fans are getting more irritating than the so called “crazies” though.
One cannot say a thing and they swoop on one like vultures. 🙂

      • nmoley says:

        Well, we’re mourning the loss:(

  23. Bex says:

I must be losing my mind, because I really like this. The colour works beautifully.

  24. Who ARE These People? says:

They look content. I love that colour. I do hope and would think they smile more openly at home. This is clearly their red-carpet mutual game face.

    • CynicalCeleste says:

My friends who wore braces smiled exactly like this during their braces phase. After the braces came off, full-wattage.

  25. Bonzo says:

Bendy has good comedic timing in Sherlock and Starter for 10 so I think he’ll do just fine on SNL.

  26. JaneD says:

I love the color and the cut – so cool & flowy. I would wear this EVERYWHERE.

  27. Cee says:

Hell no. She is wearing a sack. A hot pink sack. Even if it is Valentino* Ready to Wear, this is a big nope. However her makeup is beautiful and I like her hair. But he looks a bit rough; either he’s lost weight or he needs to see a dermatologist because his face is melting.

*I love Valentino but this dress cape is… disappointing.

  28. Guesto says:

I like her style generally and think she looks lovely here.

    • shelly* says:

I do like it, but think its a bit swamping on her, considering her trim figure, having said that its better than showing acres of flesh. I like the earrings too.

I think she looks nice on the red carpet, and I really like her casual style too.

  29. Pocketfluff says:

Dress is hideous, they both look abit plastic to me? Had a bit of work done across the pond? He has definitely lost his looks! All I see now is alien lizard king! ; )

  30. Andrea says:

I’m embarrassed for her because of that stain—is it sweat??

I am not a fan of the dress (shoes are great) but something tells me she liked it.
Benny doesn’t do it for me anymore. He has aged poorly within the past few years. His short hair isn’t doing anything for him either.

    • Timbuktu says:

I think it’s too front and low to be sweat. But yeah, I’d probably duck out of posing if I knew I had a stain. She probably didn’t realize how prominent it was, it probably didn’t look so bad in the dark, but once those flashes started going off, it became quite obvious.

  31. Aulty says:

She looks good – the hair looks much better (and fuller, wiglets?) than during the Oscars carpet marathon. Back then she looked better with her hair up, but this look suits her well now. I don’t mind the dress, the shoes are hidy though.

  32. Beluga says:

The colour’s gorgeous, but there’s too much fabric for that bright a colour and it’s swamping her, especially with that neckline. It might have worked in a lighter material. The shoes are awful.

  33. Meg D says:

    I don’t understand the dress.

The hair — am I the only one who thinks this is the kind of style Waity should try out?

    • WindowChair5 says:

I’m with you Meg. I don’t understand the dress either. It’s too heavy for her I think? And I think her makeup is too heavy as well. She looks better when she’s not wearing so much.

The shoes on the other hand, I friggin’ love them!!! I wish I had a pair myself. Perfect height and style and can be worn with anything.

Can you explain what “Waity” is?

      • Cee says:

Waity = Duchess of Cambridge, user of extensions and such.

If the neckline were different… and maybe show some arms to counter the heavy draping and overall lack of shape.

    • CynicalCeleste says:

The only way Waity would try this hairstyle is if all the disney princesses were doing it. And even then, I think she would stick with retro-disney-princess.

  34. jeremy says:

Did she steal that dress from Tilda’s garment rack? and Red shoes from Rachel’s shoebox?
Don’t wear the LadyGaGa-ish dress with ‘shopping in Tesco’ style makeup and hairstyle.

  35. Mac says:

It’s a girl! Poor Sophie only seems to receive used Valentino. Stain is probably because the model (who wore the same shoes) vomited and got splash back on the tittto area. Remember the Oscars dress? Valentino and had a weird protrusion in the front. Did the model stick her elbow through it and deform the fabric? And lastly her wedding gown. Lace was originally a nude/beige which appeared to have been bleached and dyed silver for Sophie. Guessing all the Valentino are damage/discard. Odd that she’d rather wear stained/warped/used Valentino than no Valentino. She looked better in LA and I don’t think that dress was designer at all.

    • Cee says:

      Sooo many points to make.
      1. Has the gender been confirmed?
      2. This is ready to wear, NOT couture. There is a difference. Mainly this is more mainstream, affordable and less “exclusive”.
      3. This dress belongs to Valentino’s Spring 2017 collection so definitely not a cast off as this isn’t available for purchase YET. A cast off implies 1 to 2 seasons back. She clearly has access to this designer house.
      4. Her Oscar’s dress was not Valentino. Do not remember the designer house, but definitely not Valentino. Was it Lanvin?
      5. She has worn clothes by different designer houses, mainly high echeleon ones.
      6. There is no shame in wearing an older season Valentino wedding gown. Considering the wedding took place in a very short time it would have been impossible to get her a couture gown (and the cost would have been astronomical). Having it altered, as you say, is a privilege.
      7. People sweat, especially pregnant women. Stop being so petty.

      • Viola says:

6: There is if you go public claiming it was custom made for you on a restored 19th century loom, after your own concept… Wear whatever dress you want, but stop trying to sound like all the wild animals of the forest made it for you because they were taken by your beauty.

      • Cee says:

Did she try to pretend she is Cinderella? LOL

I remember that Vogue article. Maybe they used an existing design and altered it to her taste and wishes. I still believe she would have had a couture gown if the wedding had taken place at a later date.

      • Mac says:

        1) Yes, with this dress.
        2) Ready to wear… as soon as the runway model took it off.
        3) I’m not implying it’s 1 to 2 seasons off, I’m implying that she wore a damaged Spring 2017 dress.
        4) you are correct. Oscars dress was a ruined Lanvin.
        5) Yes, Erdem dresses are the only ones that she gets non-damaged.
        6) See Viola
        7. You say Sophie’s sweat. I say vomit or blood from the last person who wore it. But for the sake of argument let’s compromise. maybe little kitty kitty kitty kit spit up all over it.

      • Cee says:

Ok Mac, we get it. You don’t like her at all.

      • Mac says:

What’s there to like or dislike? I’m just pointing out that she receives and wears stained gowns. This is a gossip site. I’m gossiping. I’m supposed to be out there “liking” her now. Says who?

  36. phlyfiremama says:

My mistake~I thought it was Sophie Turner, someone I actually CARE about!

  37. Abby_J says:

My first thought on the stain was boob leakage, but I’m guessing she isn’t far enough for that? I doubt she is still breastfeeding the first Cumberbaby, but I guess she could be? I can’t remember how old he is.

I started leaking with my first pregnancy around 20 weeks, and It was quite embarrassing on occasion, before I was introduced to pads to stop it from hitting clothes.

    • CynicalCeleste says:

      Yes, my thoughts exactly.

    • Cee says:

I think you can get pregnant even if breast feeding. It has happened.

That stain could be a lot of things.

      • Abby_J says:

I didn’t suggest that you couldn’t get pregnant while you were breastfeeding. It happens all the time.

I just said that the first thought I had was that the stain was right where a leaking breast would leave a stain.

  38. Wickedmish says:

Dress is fine, resting bitch face doesn’t match with the shoes though.

  39. Margo S. says:

    The totally look like siblings…..
