Shailene Woodley’s half bun double braid at InStyle Awards: Pinterest worthy?

These are photos of Shailene Woodley at both the Environmental Media Awards, where she was honored for her activism, and at the InStyle Awards, where she picked up the Advocate award and sported the hairstyle in question. At the EMAs Shailene had her hair slicked back and wore what looks from afar like a nondescript dress with a black crisscross top and a striped skirt made from a patchwork of different fabrics. Up close it’s really lovely though and it has velvet, lace and net fabrics put together in a way that still looks harmonious. I really like this and look at the fabric trailing down the back.

At the InStyle Awards she went for a more risky outfit, a Sophia Theallet skirt and peplum top that was just too many disparate looks crammed together. The bottom half is lacy floral, the top is diagonal stripes with a leopard print collar and then a gold metallic peplum with a giant while honeycomb band around the top attempts to pull two totally different dresses into one (it does not succeed).

I do like her hair though, it’s clever and ambitious as it looks like a bun from the front but from other angles you can see that there are two rows of braids underneath. There’s something fun about it and it suits her personality.

My girl Shailene recently wrote a powerful essay for Time outlining how ironic it was that her arrest finally brought press attention to the indigenous people fighting the Dakota Access Pipeline. It turns out that she has a trial date for that arrest, which was for criminal trespassing and engaging in a riot, this January, and faces jail time. In the meantime hundreds more have been arrested while working to protect clean water. Here’s more:

Shailene Woodley is to stand trial in North Dakota early next year on charges related to her protest against the Dakota Access pipeline.

Woodley was among 27 activists arrested Oct. 10. The Divergent star, who live-streamed her arrest on Facebook, pleaded not guilty last week to criminal trespass and engaging in a riot.

Court documents show Woodley’s trial is scheduled Jan. 25 in state court in Mandan. She could face two months in jail and $3,000 in fines if convicted of the two misdemeanors.

The Standing Rock Sioux want construction of the $3.8 billion pipeline halted, saying it could taint water supplies and encroach on tribal burial sites. Protests supporting the tribe have been going on for months, with 269 people arrested as of Sunday.

It seems frankly ridiculous that she would get jail time for a peaceful protest or that she would even have to go to trial, but I hope that Shailene’s high profile case helps bring this important cause to the forefront. I also hope the Standing Rock Sioux successfully block the pipeline. The more people talk about it, tweet and post support the more pressure there is to protect the peaceful protestors and listen to their very legitimate concerns. The heavily militarized police response is troubling and Shailene and the other activists are helping to make that public knowledge.

The first dress is beautiful. I don’t like the braided updo.

    “engaging in a riot”

It really cheeses me off when peaceful protesters are put up in court with violent disorder charges. Symbolic mass trespasses in which the worst property damage is a cut fence, are not riots, as anyone who’s ever been caught up in a riot will tell you. Blocking roads and gates with passively-resisting bodies does not constitute violent disorder. It is, at most, obstruction, and thus a misdemeanour.

I didn’t think much of her before but now that’s she’s putting herself out there for a cause, yeah, she cool, rocks the dress and braids. Good for her

I’ve definitely softened on Shailene since her essay. As for her bun with braids, well, she looks nice, but I’m pretty sure I saw at least 3 girls with that hairstyle at my daughters formal (Aussie Prom) 2 years ago. It’s not exactly ground breaking, nor ahead of trends. Though, I don’t really see any Hollywood/mainstream red carpet fashion that is. Again, though, she looks pretty and comfortable and I do appreciate her natural ease with herself.

She’s gorgeous, I love the braids, and I give her props for sticking to her Boho style even when it’s risky.
Her Time essay was so powerfully moving, and I think she’s a force to be reckoned with. Mad respect for Shailene.
From a gossip standpoint: does anyone know if she’s still dating Nahko?

She has a down-to-earth, natural vibe. She’s willing to get involved and not just talk about causes she cares about.

On a shallow note, I like the hair. It suits her. Also, I bet she will grow old gracefully and naturally.

Love the first dress. Love the hairdo in the second.

I find her annoying most of the time, but I really respect her for this. It wasn’t a glamourous or trendy campaign, and she’s brought a lot of attention to it. Good for her.

I think both if these dresses are absolutely hideous but I don’t really care because I think she is AWESOME for this piece of activism! What is happening is atrocious, good on her for standing up against it!

Love the braids. Reminds me of a cheating way to get the undercut look.
Plus I love a good braid because I have braid envy and cannot do anything that looks remotely professional without feeling like my arms are going to fall off and wasting 2 hours.

I think she’s doing really impressive things. It’s brave of her to go to trial – pretty sure she would have been offered a nice plea bargain to make the publicity issue disappear and there has to be a genuine risk they will make an example of her, now. Good for her. She’s putting her money and her time, and potentially her actual freedom, where her mouth is.
