Gwyneth Paltrow in a velvet, lotus-flowered Gucci gown: lovely or tacky?

The look of the day is apparently Gwyneth Paltrow’s lotus dress. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Seriously, so many fashion sites are talking about this dress today. I don’t really get it. Gwyneth made an appearance at Elle Spain’s Style Awards last night, and I guess she was the only A-lister there (sorry, Elizabeth Hurley). Gwyneth has been a big fan of Spain for many years – she’s traveled through the country extensively and she’s apparently pretty fluent in Spanish. So, I guess it makes sense that she would go out of her way to attend this event, especially since they gave her an award for something.

As for the dress, it’s Gucci. And it has a big velvet lotus flower down the front. Why is this a thing? I mean, is the dress hideous? No, it’s not. It’s just not… Gucci? It’s just not a rich, designer look that I would expect from the fashion house or from Gwyneth.

Also: Gwyneth didn’t go to the event with her boyfriend Brad Falchuk. Is anyone one else wondering if there’s trouble in paradise with Gwyn & Brad 2.0? I think he’s still married. Her “date” for the event was US Ambassador to Spain James Costos.

Other photos… ordinarily, I think Olivia Palermo has great/interesting style, but not here. Her look is Dior. And I totally thought Monica Cruz was her sister Penelope. Monica wore Moschino and that’s a mess too.

I just don’t think Paltrow can pull off high fashion, someone like Cate Blanchet would have killed in that dress, but to me there is something ‘off’ when Paltrow tries to do edgy high fashion looks

    • detritus says:

I agree, it just doesn’t quite work on her.

      • SnarkAtLarge says:

It’s for someone with short dark hair and pale skin. Not for a natural beachy girl. She looks nice and the dress is cool but not for each other.

    • LadyMTL says:

For me, it’s those weird ruffly cap sleeves. In my mind’s eye the dress looks amazing without them, even on GP. (IMHO it also would have helped had she done something different with her hair.)

      • Mrs. Welen-Melon says:

Too many ideas in this dress. The 1970s Biba-inspired lotus and color palette is enough. With the 1930’s sleeves and the 1980s car wash skirt, it’s a mess.

Simplify the dress and put it on a more interesting wearer – Rooney Mara or Cate Blancett or Swinton.

      • detritus says:

        The sleeve are the clincher.
It’s like they should have applied that accessory rule to the dress.
Add whatever looks good, then take away one thing. Those sleeves. Or Goop.

      • yellow says:

It’s cute and I dig it… that said there’s no denying it’s also very 1997 or 98 feeling.

      • Janetdr says:

Me too-the sleeves ruined it, although w/o I still wouldn’t have been happy about the see- through skirt. I like the Lotus part though.

    • annaloo. says:

Does anyone remember Perfuma from the She-Ra doll collection? Goop looks like Perfuma gone evil. That’s not a compliment!

  2. TrueStory says:

    Love it.

  3. Lauren says:

    That dress is foul.

  4. Lukie says:

Love the dress but she can’t pull it off…and that hair and make up with a dress like that? Really? No. Just…no…

    • Emily says:

I like the dress, though I wish the skirt was just a skirt and not strips. But I had to scroll up again to check…yep. Gwyneth is wearing the same hair and make up she always always always wears.

  5. crazydaisy says:

I love the velvet lotus but the toe-revealing strip skirt, not so much. Sleeves are 50-50, but her face sure looks pretty, and she looks so happy, too!

    • Alarmjaguar says:

Different skirt and minus sleeves, it would have been great. The pink one is awful. I’m so over the deconstructed dress look (well, full disclosure, I was never into it).

  6. anniefannie says:

The capped feathery sleeves officially made it a “gilding the lilly/lotus situation…”

  7. tracking says:

    Preposterous.

  8. embertine says:

Line the bottom, cut the sleeves off, then we’ll talk.

    • Angel says:

      Right there with you.

    • Esmom says:

Yes. The skirt now looks like a car wash thingy. And as great as her legs are, I don’t need to see them here.

I actually like her hair and makeup. Some people think that look is stale for her but I have a feeling if she broke out dramatic makeup and an upswept do she would be criticized for that, too.

  9. QQ says:

In Spain this passes the Fashion Taste (im not even being shady as an avid Hola! and Vanidades Reader from Childhood and as a Matriarchy bonding tradition, we practically as a family gather to behold what the Spaniard “well to do” “aristocracy” wears I Mean its Ultimate OTT/Printclashing to the max/fussy I Think Leticia has ushered some sense in the Lunacy!)

    • Lindsay says:

Queen Letizia? She does have an amazing sense of style, great taste, posture and tailoring.

    • Lindsay says:

I just thought about this, I’m sorry if that came across as rude. I wasn’t trying to correct your spelling or anything. I just don’t know a lot about Spanish fashion and was wondering if you were referring to her or someone/something else I should learn about. Thanks for answering!

That sound like such a fun tradition! I am so jealous! My Nana grew up during The Great Depression and wasn’t into fashion, she saw it as frivolous and her daughter (my paternal aunt) shared the same view. My mom hates it, her sister is indifferent as is my sister. My mom was terrified as I started turning into a girly-girl. Whenever I critique fashion with her it has to be totally off the wall stuff or beautiful, classic Oscar gowns.

      • QQ says:

oh no biggie *shrugs* My family is littered with girls/women and we like reading and doing Board games and such so we always pass around the Holas, the Vanidades while playing Parcheesi or doing nails, we might read the Corin Tellado romance story out loud cause it’s VERRYYY corny prose or straight up reenact the gatherings, Complain about the Grimaldis ( My Mom’s Faves) read the quotes out loud or the titles or the given aristocrat or discuss the Infantas sordid taste (Looking at Elena!)

      • From Spain says:

With all the respect, Letizia is not considered a Fashion Icon in Spain, since she is always dressed inappropriately for the acts and seems to think she is a starlet and not a queen.
        Also, She is completely plastic

  10. HK9 says:

The dress is deeply ugly. Velvet done right is so luxurious this time of year and somehow, they made this look like a bath mat that’s met in an accident.

  11. minx says:

Cruz’ dress is ridiculous, ugly, cheap looking. Who would look in a mirror and think, I look great!

  12. Moxie Remon says:

Monica needs to go to a tailor immediately.

  13. Bex says:

I think I’d really like it if it had been lined, which is what I think about 99% of the sheer dresses that have been everywhere for the last 3 years.

  14. MrsBPitt says:

All outfits are fug, fug and fug!

  15. NeoCleo says:

I have never considered Paltrow to be a beautiful woman. Interesting looking? Yes. Beautiful? No. The dress? Hideous.

  16. Malificent says:

I love the lotus part. But the sheer skirt and granny pants have to go. I keep waiting for that nasty Frederick’s of Hollywood style to die, and I’ve been sadly disappointed for the last decade. I’m all for tasteful, well-placed sheer, but 90% of the sheer skirt looks just end up looking sloppy and trashy. And the fru-fru sleeves could disappear too. But I love the lotus!

  17. Beatrice says:

I can just imagine the Project Runway critique of that hideous lotus dress–over designed (you need to edit), no taste, and sad with those granny pants. Tom Ford must be howling with laughter.

  18. kodakay says:

Her clothes are always “off”. She’s no clothes horse that’s for sure!

  19. Yesitstrue says:

Minus those sleeves, I love it!

  20. Snowflake says:

    Hideous

  21. I Choose Me says:

Can the sheer trend be over. Please? Pretty please?

Also I miss GNAT. I know she’d dislike this as much as I do.

    • Lindsay says:

Is she okay? Do you know? She has been MIA for a bit.

I am ready for the sheer trend to end and take all the silly cut outs with it (which is most of them but not all)

  22. Lorelai says:

    Tacky! Ugh

  23. poppy says:

maybe she’s worked out another deal with el corte inglés?
a new line of pantaletas de abuelita? pegote pantaletas?
she’s thrilled someone asked for her to attend something.

  24. Jo says:

Palermo’s style is lazy. Did you see her wedding dress?

  25. hnmmom says:

I think G’s too old for that dress. It’s the sleeves – they’re a tad on the frou-frou girly side and she does not have that vibe. And OMG can she PLEASE do something- anything!!!! – different with her hair?!?!

  26. The Other Katherine says:

I clicked on this because I wondered how you’d make a lotus flower tacky. Now I know.

  27. Candela says:

I think the colors of the lotus dress are too severe on Gwyneth, she needs something lighter near her face. other than that i like the dress.

  28. Lisa says:

    God she looks terrible

  29. Fabvintage says:

Olivia gives me strong pregnant vibes! Normally her style is always on point.
    But i could be wrong…

  30. Nemera77 says:

Horrible.. I saw Lainey going on about it being great.. Lainey has lost her mind. This is a terrible dress; and I don’t think outside of talking about the dress no one cares that much for Goop. Nor what she is wearing. What exactly is she promoting.

  31. emilybyrd says:

i think the dress doesn’t look too bad. it’s just that the color’s all wrong on gwyneth. it just makes her skin look drab.

  32. Ladiabla says:

I love this dress on GP

  33. A Fan says:

What a unique dress. Really unusual (in a good way). Would look way better on, let’s say, Diane Kruger or Elizabeth Banks.

    [*Goop doesn’t do it justice.*]

  34. artistsnow says:

It looks like a deep red tarantula is crawling up her chest.
