Zayn Malik on why he disclosed his anxiety: ‘I knew I had to put it all out there’

Zayn Malik is really branching out in many directions (that wasn’t supposed to be a pun but then I read it and now I’ve decided to leave it). Obviously, he’s a singer with a successful solo career, he’s a fashion designer and now an author. His book, ZAYN, is due out today. The description says it’s “a photographic journey of his life since leaving One Direction,” which was a year and a half ago. Although that seems like a pretty short timeline to document, it’s more what he is documenting than how much. As has been reported, Zayn suffers from anxiety issues and has had to pull out of a few performances as a result. But when his anxiety made it impossible to perform at the Capital Summertime Ball last June, he decided to be up front with his fans and tell them exactly why he was canceling. You can read his announcement here. In his book, Zayn explains that the reason he chose to be honest was for his fans who also suffer from anxiety.

I just couldn’t go through with it. Mentally, the anxiety had won. Physically, I knew I couldn’t function. I would have to pull out.

One of my team members offered to write a statement saying that I’d been taken ill, but I didn’t want to do that. I was done with putting out statements that masked what was really going on. I wanted to tell the truth. Anxiety is nothing to be ashamed of; it affects millions of people every day.

I know I have fans out there who have been through this kind of thing, too, and I wanted to be honest for their sake, if nothing else. When I was in One Direction, my anxiety issues were huge but, within the safety net of the band, they were at least manageable. As a solo performer, I felt much more exposed, and the psychological stress of performing had just gotten to be too much for me to handle—at that moment, at least. Rather than hiding away, sugar-coating it, I knew I had to put it all out there.

[From Time]

You can read the full excerpt here. It’s obviously very emotional for Zayn and quite brave of him to lay himself bare like that. Especially since he said that even after he was completely honest, some people, including many within the industry, still had doubts about his motives. Fortunately, he has also received an outpouring of compassion and others reaching out to him who suffer from the same.

I found what he said about that the band being a safety net for his anxiety interesting. That must have been a terrible realization after his departure from One Direction. Later in the excerpt, Zayn says it’s further frustrating for him to cancel his performances because he loves performing. Not only is he letting his fans and business folk down, but also he can’t indulge in the addictive buzz of performing live. Like anything, the more that is said, the more spotlight shed on any disorder, the more we remove the stigma surrounding it. Someone who does not suffer from a disorder may never truly understand what that struggle is like but I think if we can just move to a place of empathy, we will all be so much better off as a society. Of course, handling something like anxiety is aways improved with a strong support network. In addition to his family, Zayn has girlfriend Gigi Hadid who seems to really have his back on this. I hope they both continue to champion this cause.

Pretty much the hottest most pretty male celeb ever but a beard ruins even him (for me)

  2. Nicole says:

Paint me as an asshole, whatever. But why go for an entertainment career, especially solo if you deal with this? I have terrible anxiety and I know that I would not get a thrill from performing. Also, he is letting down his bosses and fans. I just don’t get it. I am totally putting out a double standard because I feel for him, but don’t understand his choices.

It’s odd, but my daughter suffers from anxiety yet loves to be on stage (dancing, mostly). I wonder if it’s the applause, which is a type of affirmation? She’s a soft spoken girl but when she had a line in the winter pageant she really belted it out. Performing just seems to bring out the best in her. Maybe anxiety isn’t tied to personality? If you’re a performer, you’re a performer. Just one with anxiety. Does that make sense?

      • Stella says:

This makes a lot of sense – im unfortunately the same, though when I was younger – my anxiety is far too out of control now to be able to perform – I prefer to be behind the script/camera etc these days

      • Lacia Can says:

Oh Stella, that’s sad to hear but good to know you’ve succeeded despite it. My daughter is fortunate to be growing up in a time when anxiety is recognized as a treatable illness. Idk how old you are, but when I was young any kid with anxiety would have been told to get over it. Not helpful. It sounds like you’ve made your own path despite obstacles, which is great. 🙂

      • Nicole says:

That makes total sense! I must say I did love the stage when I was quite young and did a few films, etc. So, you have a point! Thank you. I would not have thought of that. And the validation thing makes so much sense.

    • Suzie says:

He is very talented. Check out his album. He sings beautifully and has many fans who want to hear his music. It’d be a real shame if he quit. Plus he says he loves it. He’s right not to give up.

    • Leen says:

It’s odd yes but I get it. i love drama and acting and love to perform but I have bad bad anxiety. It would always hit me before a live performance, but on stage it would dissipate. I don’t think it would be fair to exclude someone from exploring their passion. I never ended up going into the drama route but I completely get how you can have anxiety AND love to perform.

      • Nicole says:

Never said he should not explore his passion. It is just a hinderance as a business decision for promoters, fans, etc.

    • ReineDidon says:

Even people suffering from anxiety can dream of being entertainers.
Also, anxiety isn’t present 100% of the time. Sometimes you feel on top of the world and capable of achieving anything. And sometimes you have a panick attack, feel down, fear the failure and the pressure of not being as good as expected.

      • Nicole says:

Again, NOT WHAT I SAID. It is a poor business decision. That is all. Time is money in all aspects of business. Cancelling gigs could get to be a big problem for an entertainer. It is like calling out at work. Just business. Follow your dreams? Absolutely, but be aware of what that comes with it because you will be expected to perform and show up. I know what anxiety does, live with it everyday and also have seen people be fired quite quickly for not showing up for productions, etc. Music may be different from film though.

I really really like this boy and his music, i Hope he gets well and prospers

  4. Suzie says:

It’s a really good thing that Zayn is speaking up. I used to suffer myself from anxiety, I was handling it ok but was unable to use the subway as I felt claustrophobic, finding it difficult to breathe normally. I was ashamed to say it to family and friends as I thought they’d think differently of me; so I would come up with excuses for not taking the subway. The less taboo it becomes, the easier it is for sufferers not to feel isolated and to open up about it instead of keeping it as a secret. Especially for boys/men who are afraid to be seen as weak/cowards and suffer in silence. Also it should help non-sufferers, especially young people, to have more compassion.

  5. Gaby says:

I like him. Plus, that gorgeous face.

  6. atiaofthejulii1 says:

I still think he has a big drug problem and that doesn’t help his anxiety.

    • Suzie says:

People assumed he had a drug problem because he was very skinny and gaunt but he said he suffered from an eating disorder, which actually makes more sense retrospectively. He looked like it.

  7. Nev says:

    The beauty.

  8. MellyMel says:

I read earlier that he also talks about having an eating disorder a few years back which explains old pictures of him looking really thin. I’m glad he’s talking about it because eating disorders are still seen as a female disease and there are so many men and young boys that struggle with it everyday.

  9. Bethany says:

I have suffered periodically from anxiety/depression since I was 13. When I was in my late 30’s the anxiety got so bad I couldn’t leave my house and had to take a leave of absence from work. Ended up in the hospital and thank goodness I found help. Anxiety is horrible. I appreciate Zayn’s candor.

  10. Fran says:

Those two could make the most beautiful babies ever.
