Michelle Obama covers Vogue for the final time as FLOTUS: bittersweet?

1216-VO-COVR01-01_noupc

It’s been said many, many times that Americans got love-drunk on the Obamas during their eight years in the White House. They were always such a beautiful, photogenic, cool, amazing first family. No matter what, I kept saying, we needed to enjoy them and embrace them even harder in their final months in the White House. Well, all of that has taken an especially bittersweet turn following the election of an orange predator. These are not simply the final months within which we’ll get to enjoy the Obamas. These are the final months within which we will have some positive sense of who we are as Americans. So that makes the December Vogue cover especially heartbreaking. Michelle Obama makes her final appearance as FLOTUS on the December Vogue, her third Vogue cover overall. You can read the cover story here. Some highlights:

The role of First Lady is what each woman wants it to be: “Everything we do is by choice. I could have spent eight years doing anything, and at some level, it would have been fine. I could have focused on flowers. I could have focused on décor. I could have focused on entertainment. Because any First Lady, rightfully, gets to define her role. There’s no legislative authority; you’re not elected. And that’s a wonderful gift of freedom.”

Pres. Obama on his wife: “Michelle never asked to be First Lady. Like a lot of political spouses, the role was thrust upon her. But I always knew she’d be incredible at it, and put her own unique stamp on the job. That’s because who you see is who she is— the brilliant, funny, generous woman who, for whatever reason, agreed to marry me. I think people gravitate to her because they see themselves in her— a dedicated mom, a good friend, and someone who’s not afraid to poke a little fun at herself from time to time.”

Her life post-White House: “I will take the same approach leaving as I did coming in. I won’t know until I’m there. I’ve never been the former First Lady of the United States before… But I will always be engaged in some way in public service and public life. The minute I left my corporate-law firm to work for the city, I never looked back. I’ve always felt very alive using my gifts and talents to help other people. I sleep better at night. I’m happier. So we’ll look back at the issues that I’ve been working on. The question is: How do I engage in those issues from a new platform? I can’t say right now, because we can’t spend that much time really doing the hard work of vetting offers or ideas or options because we’re still closing things out here.”

Whether she considers her fashion choices “brave”: “Yeah, no…I don’t think about it like that. It all boils down to comfort level: If I’m going to make you comfortable, than I have to be comfortable first. So my first reaction isn’t ‘Who made this?’ But ‘Let’s try it on. What does it look like? Oooh, that’s cute. Oh, wow. I never thought of wearing something like this. let’s put a belt on it. I feel gooood in this.’ There are definitely designers that I love, people I love to work with. And who they are as people matters. Are they good people? Do they treat their staff well? Do they treat my staff well? Are they young? Can I give them a boost? But! When all of that is equal…is it cute?!”

Why she likes to hug people: “I always touch people because I know that there’s a level of anxiety, people are teary or they’re nervous, and I just try to physically hold them and bring them down and say: ‘We’re here. I’m just Michelle.’ I want them to be able to walk away from that moment feeling like it meant something to them. And if they’re too nervous, if it feels too…formal, people can’t breathe. So that’s what I try to do with my interactions: a hug, a touch. It’s like music. It’s like friendship.”

This made me want to cry. Yes, because I’m going to miss Michelle so much, but also because… Melania Trump is our new first lady. How in the world did we get here? My mother – who proudly voted for Hillary Clinton, thank God – is absolutely appalled by the FLOTUS situation. I can’t even think that far, mostly because I think Donald Trump will usher in the apocalypse and who cares what Melania will do? In the grand scheme of things, Melania will probably be the least controversial and least damaging part of the Trump administration. She’s just going to shop and act as hostess and that’s it. No one even knows how Melania feels about Michelle’s White House garden.

Michelle is a goddess. We are so lucky to have her and I really hope she stays in the public eye/keeps up good work. The Obamas will not be the first family anymore but they’re still here! Maybe they can be the ray of sunshine we can hang on to during the upcoming dark times. Lots of pressure for them though 🙁

As for Melania, I kind of feel bad for her. All she wanted to be was a trophy wife, she must be so stressed and overwhelmed. She aimed correctly- she knows she’s not all that smart and she didn’t really want to work hard, which is fine…but look at her life now.

    • Fl girl says:

I hope that no designer who dressed Michelle will deign to dress Balonia.

      Yea, I’m a sore loser.

      • Neelyo says:

Call me one too because I was hoping the same thing.

      • S in Seattle says:

After 8 years of cringing at the tasteless nickname Moobama, PLEASE don’t sink to that level. Like her or not, Melania is not the one to be upset about.

      • cd3 says:

I like your comment @Seattle. It’s in the true spirit of Michelle’s own (over used!) quote – when they go low, we go high…

And Michelle will be greatly missed. I hope she doesn’t disappear from the public eye.

    • Karen says:

I was just traveling, and the people kept asking why Michelle didn’t run for president.

      • chn says:

Are we really asking that? After all the hate she received for merley existing these 8 years?
I don’t recall any other first lady getting as much hatred as michelle obama. The most vile things I have ever read was aimed at michelle. And I honestly didn’t see many people defending her all that much.
I wonder where all the people now begging michelle to run were all those years she was being attacked, called a man, a gorilla etc and they didn’t spare her innocent daughters either.

      • Karen says:

^I should add these weren’t Americans asking. Canadians.

But she focused on worthwhile things instead in a MEANINGFUL way. Could someone PLEASE tell this to Katie Keen and Normal Bill?

Even this Britisher will miss this FLOTUS.

    • teacakes says:

This Indian will miss this FLOTUS too.

The level of scrutiny American political spouses face has always been slightly bizarre to me, but she’s handled it with incredible grace and good humour. I wish I could be even one-tenth as amazing as her when I’m older.

  3. Tila says:

I love her so so much but they really could’ve done better with the cover.

  4. Louise177 says:

For the life of me I can’t imagine Melania doing anything. Agree that she’ll just be a hostess. I don’t think she even wanted or thought she would be First Lady. I doubt she even knows what her job even is.

    • Lightpurple says:

Her husband doesn’t have a clue what his job is either but she’ll have the easier learning curve.

    • als says:

She may not know anything but I bet she’ll love the power that comes with the new status.

    • Megan says:

You know, if we have to have a narssasitic crybaby and his tacky wife as president and First Lady, I would prefer Kanye and Kim.

    • Alix says:

@Louise: Her job is to keep hiding the fact that she’s in this country illegally. And pretending she’s never had anything done to her face, which is well nigh in the back of her head now.

      • Madailein says:

I’m not defending Melania, just her status, but she is NOT in this country illegally!! Though she may well have been, at one time—it wouldn’t surprise me—she is married to an American citizen, Mr. Jack o’ Lantern Face, and she has been a legal U.S. citizen for some time…As far as Michelle goes, I miss her already. Such a charming, warm, steadfast and devoted woman! I’m not a native born American, I have dual citizenship, and am half planning to return to my country of birth for the next four years. Then again, I’m an American, too. I’d feel bad deserting my fellow countrymen/women at such a daunting and truly terrible time.

  5. Rae says:

I will miss the Obamas, I will miss the way Michelle owned every room she stepped into, but mostly I will miss hearing President Obama talk so proudly and passionately about his wife.

There is nothing more romantic than to hear a man utterly devoted and in love with his wife.

As for Melania, I will support her for herself because she is NOT her husband. If I trashed her for nothing other than being Trump’s wife, I would be another ignorant hypocrite.

  6. Mot says:

    Michele Obama 2020!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Talie says:

Based on The Wall Street Journal reporting, Obama as agreed to tutor Trump in how to be a president…dear lord. I am devastated for them that they are now inextricably linked to this man, but I also admire him for putting his country first, always.

    • Nina says:

I hope Obama can sway Trump a little bit. Since Trump has the attention span of a goldfish and clearly doesn’t interested in policies, he can be manipulated. The question is who will influence his decision, hope its not Banon.

      • Who ARE These People? says:

Of course it will be Bannon. Bannon helped him win the election. Bannon will work to help him broaden and consolidate his power.

And did someone mention Trump wants more rallies? Of course he wants more rallies. It’s not just for his ego; it’s to inflame and organize the public.

They need only to figure out a single, unified scapegoat to get everyone else behind – so far it’s been quite a diverse lot.

That Bannon chose to close the campaign with anti-Semitism offers one suggestion.

    • lizzie says:

I totally agree. I am a small person who would let Trump hang himself.

Obama is a saint. He cares enough about our country (and to a degree his personal legacy) to put some seriously disgusting stuff behind him and reach out to Trump — despite knowing it is falling on deaf ears.

      • Vernie says:

A saint indeed. I nearly had a rage stroke when I read that WSJ excerpt. The indignity of it makes me stabby.

  8. Nancy says:

She was a noble First Lady and history will reflect that fact. Gracious and beautiful, and she did a such a great job with her daughters and protecting them in the White House. As much as I despise the president elect, I am quite sure his wife will be on many covers as well. I can’t imagine what her legacy will be, maybe a saint for being married to that man. I saw a meme with Michelle and Melania sitting together for their meeting at the White House: Hi, I’m Michelle said the First Lady, Hi, I’m Michelle said Melania, lol, good luck!

  9. Nicole says:

We didn’t deserve the Obamas and after this election good luck getting either of them to step back into the political ring. That is if the US isn’t scorched earth in 4 years

  10. Maya says:

To my American friends – I have a genuine question.

If for any reason Trump doesn’t get sworn in as president next year (he quits, Supreme Court decides against or he gets ill etc), will that automatically make Hillary the next president?

Or does Mike Pence still get to be the president?

    • Kate says:

      Pence.

      • Shambles says:

        F*ck me.

I already knew that. But still. F*ck.

I’ve been trying to engage in conversation with a guy who voted for Trump, but actually laid out his logical, step by step reasoning for doing so beyond just, “Trump Train.” Two days later, he posted about how happy he is that his sister got engaged to her female partner. In the nicest way I could, I asked him how he felt about the fact that our VP-elect is about as vocally anti-LGBTQ as one could possibly be. I’m interested to see what he says.

    • cynic says:

Mike Pence would be vice-president, and he is just as bad, if not worse than Trump. He is a hard-core conservative who also hates the gays. He believes gay people should be subject to conversion therapy.

      • lizzie says:

he also tried to pass legislation that made women have funerals for a fetus if they had a miscarriage.

      • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

He also had stations that were registering mainly African-Americans to vote raided by police. He’s a real gem.

    • Larelyn says:

There are only two ways Hillary can become president at this point in time:

      1) For the Electoral College to vote against their pledges in December. When the EC electors were chosen by the parties, they swore to follow their state’s outcome. However, they do have the option to go against their pledge: they are called faithless electors. There are usually consequences and fines for being a faithless elector, but the option is still there. You might have seen the main change.org petition to convince the EC to go faithless.

      2) States with close results will have recounts. There is a .01% chance Hillary can get a majority through recounts. There is about a .1% chance Hillary will tie Trump through recounts (percentages are my guess – just to show how slim the possiblity is). If there is a tie, the tie breaking vote goes to the House, which could possibly break in Hillary’s favor if the House listens to all this uproar.

Every other scenario puts Pence in as president. And those scenarios are much more likely than the two I outlined above.

  11. Farah says:

According to sources, the cover was supposed to be Hillary. I love Michelle, but this makes me sad again.

I would’ve loved Hillary looking powerful with the words: Madam President.

  12. Rice says:

Can’t remember who spoke about it (Colbert?) but there was a pic of the WH staff when current POTUS was talking about the POTUS-elect. Some looked like they were about to burst into tears and others looked downright pissed.

  13. mellie says:

I just love her…there are just no words to describe her other than CLASSY!

  14. Maura says:

She’s so beautiful and inspiring. I hope she can rest and recharge before figuring out what is her next right step because we will need both Obamas to help us through these next few years.

  15. LinaLamont says:

    “bittersweet?”
    No, just bitter.

To go from her to the soon-to-be-I-can’t-call-her-FLOTUS…UGH!
To see that crass POS family inhabit the White House, after the class act that is the Obamas…UGH

Do you realize that we had 8 years without a scandal? From anyone even associated with the First Family?

  16. Shambles says:

“Everything we do is by choice. I could have spent eight years doing anything, and at some level, it would have been fine. I could have focused on flowers. I could have focused on décor. I could have focused on entertainment.”

THE SHADE. Oh, my Goddess. Can I just pretend this is her way of telling Melania that she can choose to be a superficial fembot if she wants, but she actually has the power to do something meaningful?

Michelle is divine. I will miss her so much.

  17. cynic says:

I will miss this classy, loving couple.

  18. Beckysuz says:

God how I will miss her.

  19. Fire Rabbit says:

Who is he going to scapegoat next? The Media, including entertainment, if you want to consolidate your power, you have to control the information stream. Then the educators and educated. Bonfires for all. The umbrella over all of it will be race, gender and religion. There are ways that ruthless people are unafraid to use to get rid of people who stand against them. These are not kumbaya people, they are unresponsive to reason and negotiation. They don’t care about walkouts and protests. Your anger feeds and emboldens them. I feel people, especially white people, still do not comprehend just how much things have changed for this nation.

  20. MellyMel says:

I haven’t bought Vogue in years but I will be buying this copy. And crying while I read it most likely. Also fun story…Vogue posted a picture of Melania on its Instagram asking what everyone thought of her fashion sense and what she would bring as FLOTUS… the comments were a mess and they deleted the picture. We are not ready for another First Lady.

  21. aenflex says:

She’s smokin hot. And seems like a decent, intelligent person. The whole package.
I hope she keeps active in politics.

  22. Lorelai says:

We didn’t deserve the Obamas. They must be so disappointed in this country right now.

    ::cries::

  23. Lana 234 says:

The First Lady will be dearly missed. She has been one of the most dynamic First Ladies we have had in a long time. Like president Obama said about her what you see is what you get. In the past First Ladies have always seemed distant cold. She is the epitome of what a lot of women strive to be which is intelligent, kind and warm.

  24. maryquitecontrary says:

Michelle. Sasha. Malia. Barack. The Obamas.

    OUR First Family.

Only a few last bittersweet months left. One last Thanksgiving.

    One last turkey pardoned.

    One last Christmas.

    One last New Year’s Eve.

    Miss YOU. Miss US. Godspeed.
