Oprah explains tweeting #HopeLives after Trump met with Obama: ‘my mistake’

Oprah got some well deserved flack last week when she made a seemingly clueless tweet following Trump’s meeting with Obama. As you know, Trump seemed humbled and conciliatory after speaking with Obama for 90 minutes. He indicated that he would keep key parts of Obamacare, that he planned to honor US involvement in NATO, and like he also might be more reasonable than everything he’s done and said to date would indicate. As you also know, Trump was woefully ignorant about the requirements of being President and seemed unaware of basic requirements of the job. Plus we’ve seen Trump say one thing and then deny it or do another, sometimes within an hour or two. He can’t be trusted, this is a scary time, and so many of us are worried about our healthcare, social security, about potential raises in taxes for the middle class, and about a general attitude of hate and discrimination which has flourished in the wake of the election. This is what Oprah tweeted:

It’s easy enough for Oprah to tweet that from her massive compound while cuddling her spaniels and golden retrievers. She’s probably going to save millions of dollars under a Trump presidency and it’s not like she’ll be affected by cuts to social service programs. Oprah has rolled back her comments somewhat and admitted she made a mistake. Oprah talked about the tweet during a Q&A discussion with director Ava Duvernay following a screening of Duvernay’s new documentary, 13th. (Available now on Netflix.) It doesn’t sound like she’s apologizing exactly, just saying that she shouldn’t have addressed her tweet to everyone because it was more personal than that.

“Y’all heard about my tweet problems?” Winfrey asked a crowd on Sunday in Los Angeles…

Winfrey was slammed for the tweet throughout her mentions. “This is the second time I’ve had tweet troubles,” she said on Sunday. “And it’s the same lesson, so Jesus, I hear you. You don’t have to tell me again.”

Winfrey recalled getting in hot water when she had just started OWN for telling “everybody” with a Nielsen box to turn on her network as a way to increase ratings – and she explained how using “everybody” again was her mistake.

“I couldn’t breathe after the election,” she said. But seeing Trump and Obama together at the White House gave her a renewed sense of optimism. “I was expecting tension, awkwardness, and strain. So when I saw them sitting together, I actually took a picture of the screen that said ‘President-elect Trump honored to meet Obama.’ And President Obama was being so gracious, and I heard Donald Trump say, ‘He’s a good man.’ I heard Donald Trump say, ‘I’m going to be seeking his counsel.’ I literally went [deep breath], I can breathe now,” Winfrey said.

“My mistake, and this is what I know to be true: you can never talk about everybody,” she added. “Even in your arguments with your husband and your children. Don’t talk about what you should do, what you ought to do – you can only speak for yourself. So what I should have said was, ‘I just took a breath.’ What I said was, ‘Everybody take a breath – #HopeLives.’”

Winfrey said that perhaps a better hashtag would have been #CivilityLives, “because this was more civil than I expected it to be.”

The legendary talk show host has spoken out against Trump in the past, even comparing him to a “demagogue.” She said Sunday that her tweet was only in reference to the “transition of power” and not Trump’s policies. “Not, ‘Take a deep breath about… everything.’ No. Not at all.”

[From EW via Huffington Post]

I think I understand what Oprah is saying. She always touting wellness and relaxation techniques so you could read her tweet like she’s saying she could relax for once and that we’re in it for the long haul. She often generalizes her own experiences to other people so she didn’t realize that she shouldn’t do it in this case. Plus at least she left the tweet up and didn’t delete it once she realized it was tone deaf. It is somewhat reassuring that Trump seemed like he was seeking guidance from Obama, especially considering how incredibly ignorant he is about the job of being President. However we’ve seen the people he’s surrounding himself with, we’ve heard the warnings from the Republicans with consciences and even from the most strident right wing pundits. This is not normal, this is not ok and we should not try to normalize this by any means. We need to dig deeper and to stop trying to sound balanced. Treating Trump like an average Republican president is like giving climate change deniers equal debate time with scientists. One side has data and facts and the other is blatantly false. I really hope Oprah is right and that this is a good sign, but chances are low.

Both the so-called problem and her response make no sense to me. I may be overloaded and not able to process nuance atm

  2. Shambles says:

As one person on Twitter said,
    “She can afford to breathe.”

  3. lallyvee says:

Who told her those glasses look good?

  4. Jenns says:

    Other hashtag ideas:

  5. Singtress says:

I don’t understand why either of her tweet issues were/are issues.
    #notSarcasm #confused

    • swak says:

I can see with the current tweet why it was an issue. She says “Everybody take a deep breath” which as she said later it should have read “I can. . .” Not everyone can take a deep breath right now and think that it is going to be okay just because Trump said some pretty words. His actions will speak much louder than his words. JMO.

    • robyn says:

A kind word from Trump and suddenly she is accepting and hopeful? These are crazy times indeed and she should remember what Maya Angelou said: ‘When someone shows you who they are believe them; the first time.’

Don’t forget Oprah what it felt like to be scared in America!!!!!!!

      • eto says:

I was/am scared as well but I had a similar feeling to Oprah – even if it was fleeting. That finally in this hellish nightmare Trump had been humbled – I wanted to be optimistic. Seems foolish now, but I can understand what she felt in that moment.

    • Myrna says:

      @singtress +1000

    • LoveIsBlynd says:

Well, HOPE fully Trump said all those bigoted things to get the bigot’s vote and now that he’s president he won’t do a damn thing to change the upward spiral of civil rights intimated by Obama. That would take work. This man’s a brand not a worker. Trump is just a narcissist who threw the dice on appealing to the lost underbelly of america’s capacity to get off their butt craters (couches) to vote. Now that the thing is “the leader” he will probably just parade his trophy wife and start his N for narcissist network for his retirement in four years.

  6. swak says:

Pretty words from Trump about keeping parts of Obama Care and keep the US involved in NATO. When/If that happens then I’ll believe Trump. Until then he has reversed himself so many times I’m surprised he isn’t dizzy.

  7. JRenee says:

I see what happened here, it was a faux pas, but she does try to seem like your average jane. She just isn’t though..

  8. Lenn says:

We always give Goop a hard time for being out of touch but this woman takes the crown every time.

  9. Scarlett says:

I didn’t understand why people got so fussed in the first place. I didn’t vote for him and I’m scared as all heck BUT, how can we ask for civility from others if we don’t show it ourselves. Giving him a chance (he hasn’t even taken office) and attempting to see hope is how I am coping. It’s a democracy! And he won! The pendulum will swing back eventually.

    • LittlestRoman says:

Provided, of course, that he and his cohorts don’t dismantle the system which allows the pendulum to swing back.

    • Natalie S says:

We gave him a chance and he picked Bannon. This is what is meant by not normalizing him. It’s a horrifying pick. To ignore this and still say Give him a chance -is part of normalizing him.

    • boredblond says:

Giving him a chance is not the issue–we have no choice, but asking to have his slate erased is not possible. His biographer, who spent years with him, described him as ‘souless’..he has demonstrated exactly who he is, and being told to ignore it is insulting.

    • hmmm says:

That’s called being naive. Civility to the Trumpsters is something to exploit. When has civility ever won a war? I guess we can suffer and die with our principles in tact.

  10. Radley says:

The trouble with social media is that it gives you a very public forum for your every brain fart. And also, the trouble with social media is it gives every pissy person watching a forum to eviscerate you for it.

I think everybody can agree Oprah means well but is not perfect. A minor eff up. She mea culpa’d. Moving on. We know she isn’t a Trump supporter.

Honestly, people who harass, insult and bully via social media really don’t have much room to criticize Trump. I caution everyone against allowing the anti-Trump movement to eat itself alive by going after every ally who occasionally phrases a thing inelegantly or disagrees over relatively minor things. Stay focused on the actual problem which is President-elect (ohmygod) Trump.

    • oliphant says:

100% agree- oprah is not the problem here.

    • pinetree13 says:

I agree with everything you said Radley.

    • hmmm says:

She sees herself as a leader as do many others. But it’s clear she does it from a cocoon. She deserves to be called out on it. Her words have power and influence.

Your doublespeak about bullying is dishonest and irrational.

      • oliphant says:

‘Your doublespeak about bullying is dishonest and irrational.’

They’re being irrational? You’ve proved Radley’s point very well here, though I doubt that was your intention.

    • lol says:

      I agree. Oprah is right.

  11. lisa says:

was the hope biden would come up from behind and sucker punch him to death? crossed my mind

  12. LinaLamont says:

    She’s a moron.

Dr?Phil, Dr Oz?, Deepak Chopra, Gary Zukav, Suze Orman, Jenny McCarthy, The Secret…
Critical thinking isn’t in her repertoire.

  13. I'mScaredAsHell says:

Last time this happened (candidate loses popular vote but wins electoral college), folks took a breath and united behind the winning candidate. And that got us 8 years of war and a Great Recession that almost rivaled the Great Depression.

So, no I won’t be taking a breath….I’ll be fighting against this one.

    • robyn says:

You have my respect. If Gore had won all those years ago we never would have been in Iraq. The world would have been different. Thousands of lives would not have been lost or maimed.

  14. HK9 says:

She made a mistake and she admitted it. Another question begs to be asked, can Trump admit his mistakes? I’m guessing that’s a no.

  15. alexis says:

Its gonna be a long four years for you, isn’t it? Just accept that whether you like it or not, he will be our next president. The best you could hope for is he at least does a decent job, and you’re not even giving him a chance. Not even in office yet!!!!

    • robyn says:

There’s nothing to accept. He is a racist sexist bully and unfit for the office. It is completely abnormal that he won. He plays loose with the law and facts and will shoot himself in the foot and it is sure to happen long before four years. His crooked ways will be too much to bare and someone will eventually lock him up. He will look good in orange since it will match his face.

    • hmmm says:

You want people to accept chaos, suffering and death. And to live in terror. Very useful.

    • Fire rabbit says:

      .

  16. Juniper says:

I don’t know who said this first because I’ve read it and seen it several times now – but as John Olivier said – put a note on your bathroom mirror, your nightstand, your computer, wherever…. that says, ‘THIS IS NOT NORMAL’. Do not normalize this President.
Also like a few have said – the horror of this comes in waves. My sister told me the other day that her two young teenage girls liked and supported Trump. That horrifed me enough but I suddenly thought how susceptible young minds are to the kind of crap Trump peddles. My sis went on to tell me about my oldest nieces ‘boyfriends’ and I had this sickening moment when I thought about how young boys just coming into puberty interpret (probably subconsciously even) the whole pussy grabbing thing. To now have the man that said THAT in the Whitehouse. It’s not going to be good and I hope to God parents are sitting down with their children and having a very neccesary ‘THIS IS NOT NORMAL’ talk.

  17. lucy2 says:

I think I get what she was trying to say, but I also get why people were annoyed by it.
Oh well. I think we have bigger things to worry about than Oprah putting her foot in her mouth.

  18. supposedtobeworking says:

He seems to take on the opinion of the last person he spoke with, so I think she can breathe every time he is around someone with critical thinking skills who embraces inclusive policies. But I’d hold my breath every time he’s speaks to anyone in his inner circle and has a disagreement with sanity.

  19. LouLou says:

I find it hard to believe that she’s breathing okay now. Now that a white supremacist is DT’s chief strategist. Why the rush to act like things are okay when they definitely are not? She could have just said she was hoping for the best while observing things closely. I saw the clip where she said this stuff. She seemed excited, like she was talking about a potentially helpful new diet book.

    • hmmm says:

She’s always been in the business of giving false hope while secretly devouring an entire fruit pie in one sitting. That’s how she’s made her money.

      • CharlotteCharlotte says:

I loved Oprah growing up, but then could not longer ignore the way she would thrust shonky snail oil salespeople on her public. And I’ll never forget one episode I watched where she mercilessly bullied a woman in the audience for saying she makes “afghans”. Oprah misheard her and said the woman said “Africans”. The poor lady was so upset and protested, but Oprah shouted her down. And then brought it up several more times during the episode to demonise and mock the poor lady, and it isn’t as though she could defend herself. She was forced to laugh along, even though she had visible years in her eyes. I lost a lot of respect for Oprah then; I was a teenager being mercilessly bullied myself at the time. Bullies are the pits.

Also, there was a poster using “Hmmm” on several boards some years ago and was rumoured to be RDJr.

  20. jen says:

I cannot stand Oprah, at all.
Back in the 80’s, she was still a humble, caring human being.
During the 90’s, she started to think that maybe she is God, and in the 00’s acted liked she was.
During a show on sexual abuse, she asked a teen-aged girl why she didn’t come forward sooner because then then the other female guest that was sitting next to her wouldn’t have been abused. Yes, she did say that and when a psychologist called her out on that despicable blaming and shaming, the psychologist got death threats for going up against the great Oprah.

Hey Oprah, STFU! You are not God but you are so far removed from this planet and humanity.
You can breathe because you are not now OWNED by a racist, sexist, greedy, lying, cheating, sexually predatory sociopath. The rest of us now are. We are at the mercy of a madman. Get it? Now STFU!

  21. Nymeria says:

“Plus at least she left the tweet up and didn’t delete it once she realized it was tone deaf.”

Yes. Let’s just censor everything but still keep telling ourselves we’re not as bad in that regard as Russia.

  22. JRenee says:

And on another note, I love the candy cane onesie she’s wearing.

  23. Sunshine Gold says:

People, we have enormous problems in this country – let’s save our outrage for real things that matter.

  24. Luci Lu says:

Everybody makes mistakes Oprah. Donald Chump is an evil, vindictive, lying liar, racist; and, he quite-possibly raped a thirteen-year old child, when he was forty-eight years old. When people show you who they are…….
