Carrie Fisher gave Harrison Ford a heads-up that she was revealing their affair

Yesterday, we learned the absolutely shocking (!) news that Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford had carried on a three-month affair during filming of Star Wars: A New Hope. While it had always been rumored that those first three film sets were dens of hedonism, drugs and sex, this was the first time Carrie had actually confirmed a long-standing rumor. She was 19 years old when she began carrying on with the 33-year-old Harrison, who was married at the time. So, the question now is… does Harrison mind that she’s talking about this? Probably not.

One might expect Harrison Ford to have had a few choice words for Carrie Fisher when she gave him a friendly heads-up about a book she was writing that would publicly reveal their 1976 affair. Instead, the dry-witted actor uttered just one.

“He went, ‘Lawyer!’ ” Fisher tells PEOPLE.

The actress-author, 60, took his reaction as playful, if resigned, and assured her Star Wars costar she’d send him an early copy and said she was open to any notes. Indeed, Fisher, who was just 19 at the time of their whirlwind romance during the original Star Wars shoot, sent Ford an early manuscript for The Princess Diarist, exclusively excerpted in this week’s issue of PEOPLE.

“I called him and said, ‘Where are you? I’m sending it to you,’ ” she recalls. “I don’t want to embarrass anyone and he’s very private. I said, ‘I know you’re not going to be excited but …’ ” No notes from Ford were forthcoming. (And he did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.) While Fisher has yet to receive Ford’s feedback, she isn’t second-guessing her decision to write about their days together.

“It was 40 years ago,” she explains, adding that the whole experience — making the original film and carrying on their secret romance — “was of a time.”

[From People]

I sort of agree about the 40 years ago thing. Obviously, if the adultery wounds were fresh and his kids were still little, it would be a different story. But it was 40 years ago! That’s long enough for people to call it a vintage sex scandal or a classic Hollywood affair. And I think Harrison’s silence speaks volumes – he’s not going to make a fuss about it and he obviously didn’t do anything to stop her from writing about it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Oh, and Carrie also pushed back on the claims that she called Harrison a bad lover. She told People: “Any reports claiming I said Harrison was bad in bed are utterly false. Perhaps people should read the book before they write their stories.” Thank God. My vintage lady-boner for Han Solo doesn’t have to deflate with the idea that he was a dud in the sack.

I assumed she told him about it. She doesnt seem like a bad lady. Plus that probably wasn’t even the first time he cheated on her. Hence the divorce. The guy’s on his third marriage so I doubt he cares much now.

    • smcollins says:

      @Margo S
Exactly! And I couldn’t believe some of the reactions from yesterday, either. You’d think this was some major revelation and that it happened only a few years ago, as opposed to a few *decades* ago. The quickness that some tend to jump onto their moral high-horses is laughable sometimes.

      • CharlotteCharlotte says:

Yeah, about that comment of your. Stop trying to normalise this ish. She was a teenager. She was drunk and stoned. He was 33 and married. That’s not okay. It won’t be okay in another 40 years.

        THIS IS NOT NORMAL.

The fact that Ford got around a lot in the 70’s and 80’s was hardly a secret, he was basically Warren Beatty with somewhat fewer high profile notches on his bed post. I guess people forgot about that when he became super private in the 90’s, but it certainly won’t be news to his adult children that he was screwing around on their mothers. So I think we can give the ‘won’t somebody please think of the children’ thing a rest.

    • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Yes – especially when his infidelity was the reason his first 2 marriages ended.

Also, wasn’t there a rumour that she had a brief fling with Lucas or was that someone else? He was another one who put it around HW during that era.

    • AmunetMaat says:

I was a kid in the 80s. I never knew anything about Harrison Ford’s personal life. He was that guy with the smile in the Indy movies. Hearing all of this gossip now is popcorn magic. I heard of Warren Beattty’s womanizing. To know that Ford was the same way is shocking. Eve Babitz said Ford was a great lover. One can imagine.

Thank you! I thought I was the only one that didn’t understand people’s reactions yesterday. Ford’s kids are old now and likely aware of their father’s behaviours. They’ve most probably got over it a long time ago too. Carrie Fisher most likely knows that and understands it. Her father, after all, famously left her mother to marry Liz Taylor…

Please, please, when I am 60 and beyond, let me not care at all about things from my past being revealed. In fact, let me gather my teenaged grandchildren around and horrify them with my escapades. <3

  4. Amelia says:

When does her book come out?
This is exactly the kind of distraction/vintage gossip I’m after right now. Her being a dog lover and mental health advocate just seals the deal for me.

And yeah. 40 years have passed. I imagine Ford’s kids from that marriage know enough about their Dad to not be shellshocked by it all.

    • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Have always been a fan of hers – she’s a great writer.

Prob not and Carrie isn’t going to be the only starlet he has an affair with.

    • Ca says:

Ford’s kids are older now than he was when he played Han Solo. They can deal.

  5. bellebottomblues says:

Good for Carrie for confirming the long held rumours, and kudos to Harrison for being cool about it all.
    Speaking of “Runours” lol……
Stevie Nicks is another celebrity I wish would write her autobiography.
She keeps saying she wants to wait till everyone involved is either too old to care or is dead. I hope not!

    • Bethy says:

      Me too. I love Stevie.

    • TQB says:

Oh yes, please! And please, I don’t want to think about losing Lindsey Buckingham or Mick Fleetwood right now… I just can’t. However, I do want to know all their sordid secrets ;).

  6. Tourmaline says:

Harrison Ford is so handsome in that top picture. Even his hands are gorgeous. Swoon

    • Christin says:

Random thought — I wonder if the photographer credit is the same Maureen D who dated Cary Grant for several years in the 1970s.

  7. JA says:

Well I guess I’d rather ride my horse then cackle with glee that a married father of 2 cheated on his wife with a 19yr old for 3months because it fulfilled some fantasy I had of them 40yrs ago. It was gross then it’s gross now…

  8. Tig says:

I dunno- why go there now? Good grief- Harrison Ford survived a plane crash-hardly think he’s going to care about this. And pls- no “deets” beyond the fact it happened. That stuff absolutely makes me cringe!

  9. fiddlefaddle says:

Is it just me or is it quite rare that that kind of on-screen chemistry does NOT lead to shenanigans?

    • TQB says:

I was an actor for many years and I completely affirm the shenanigans. I was a young person so had little to lose but I always wonder what it would be like, now, to play someone’s lover whilst being married and such. The last show I did I played a mother and I still look at my “son’s” pictures online with great maternal affection. I might be a bit too method.

      • fiddlefaddle says:

Yes, I can easily imagine that, especially between intense actors. I have some experience with stage actors and opera singers, and the latter’s shenanigans were especially legendary.

Luckily none of the new young Star Wars cast are married, I think…!

  10. DesertReal says:

I concur, it was a long time ago and any kids he had with his ex are surely in their late 40s or early 50s. This delayed reaction “scandal” hasn’t diminished any of my love for either one of them.
    However.
Mark “Luke” Hamil’s see through shirt in that pic tho….
As Dave Chappelle/white boys on the internet like to say…
    “WHAT are those?”

  11. Aud says:

I have a shirt like that. It looked totally fine and then I saw a pic taken with a flash. 😳 I was horrified.

Wtf with the duck lips, Carrie.

  12. fiona says:

Carrie was 19 in that movie?! She looks 30 in that top photo. And 30+ in all of the star wars films. Didn’t realise she was that young.

  13. someone says:

At 47 and 49 I’m pretty sure that Harrison’s sons love him for the father and grandfather he is now, rather than disliking him for how that marriage ended. Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart helped pay for this ex wife’s housing when she was diagnosed with MS a decade ago. Not only did they buy her a house and adapt it for her disabilities but they also paid her medical bills and nursing care. Google Mary Marquardt and you can find her interview from 2005 where she thanks them.

I think the real drama might be the fact that Harrison met his second wife Melissa Mathison on the set of Apocalypse Now in 1976, which was filmed right before Star Wars. The question would be did Melissa know about Carrie? And what did Mary know about all of them?

  14. iheartjacksparrow says:

Since this happened during filming of the first (now fourth) film, I wonder how difficult it was for them to make the next two movies together.

    • Me45 says:

It’s pretty much common knowledge that they were together during the filming of The Empire Strikes Back too.
