Amal Clooney: America could ‘lose some of its moral standing’ with Pres. Trump

Last week, Amal Clooney made an appearance and gave a speech at the Texas Conference for Women in Austin. Fashion note: she wore a pinstriped Armani dress to the conference, and I have no problem with it. I tend to think Amal goes too flouncy and girlish for some of her professional appearances, but this dress is a solid professional look. Throughout the week, there were quotes from her speech leaking out, but it wasn’t until the political comments came out that everyone began paying attention. Some highlights:

Women standing up for women: “The worst thing that we can do as women is not stand up for each other, and this is something we can practice every day, no matter where we are and what we do — women sticking up for other women, choosing to protect and celebrate each other instead of competing or criticizing one another. Women’s rights are human rights. As women, there is a bond we all share . . . There are struggles that only women share . . . I never understood why women were considered a minority when we are a majority and powering the global economy. Holding back women is holding back half of every country in the world.”

She wonders what Trump will do about ISIS:
“The president-elect has said that fighting ISIS is actually a priority … so it may be that there can be progress, and obviously everyone has to respect the outcome of the democratic process here, and we have to hope for the best.”

On Trump’s politics: “[Trump’s comments] that there should be a religious test imposed on entering the U.S. or the fact that there should be state-sponsored torture or that families of suspected terrorists should all be killed – all of those things are violations of international human rights law and the values that underlie that,” noting that “there’s some concern from abroad as to are these things actually going to happen, or is the U.S. going to lose some of the moral standing that it has internationally.”

[From NY Mag & Page Six]

Yeah, it just feels like everything is a horror show and the international community is absolutely appalled with the bad life choices Americans are making. If Amal had come out and said “Everyone in Europe is horrified,” she would have been telling the truth, but at what cost?

This also got me wondering if Amal is going to become an American citizen – even when you’re getting your American citizenship through marriage (as Amal would), it will take three years, and that’s with every single thing in order. Amal and George have only been married for two years, so while I’m sure everything is fine with her paperwork, I doubt she’s an American citizen yet. Of course, I’m not even sure if she has applied to be a citizen. If she has applied, I’m sure she’s not worried that a President Trump will screw up her personal immigration process – after all, Trump and his supporters are pretty clear about allowing “hot” immigrants into the country.

I’m commenting on everything -can you tell I have a snow day? She’s not wrong! And I agree this is a good professional look, too short for me still, but I apparently lack international glamor.

  2. Shambles says:

I wish she’d wear her hair natural. Whatever her natural texture is. I’m just over all these over-done looking blowout curl things.

And yes. America is the drunk, pervy uncle who can’t stay married and squandered all of his money at the horse races of the world’s thanksgiving table. To think, we could have been the awesome grandma who used to be a hippie but is now just a cool lady who gets sh!t done and loves everyone. Le sigh….

    • Jayna says:

      I love her hair.

Yep. I will never get over this election. I feel like I”m in a nightmare.

      • LoveIsBlynd says:

Thank you Jayna- I’m so fired up and in despair at the same time. How can anyone on FB post post pictures of cats or recipes…nothing is worse than fascism. I had nothing to complain about before- ever…we may lose basic human rights as well as turn our planet into rust and dust. Am I over reacting?

    • detritus says:

I would love to see her natural texture, I bet it’s big beautiful curls, just by looking at how much lift she has at her roots.

I’m visiting New York at the end of the week, and I’m having trouble with this. It was supposed to be a girl power trip, celebrating the first female president with my pregnant and nursing besties. Girl power and triumph and celebrating being badass bitches who get shit done. Now it’s more like a cry-together and try to plan a way to smuggle my pregnant friend back to Canada.

      • Jayna says:

I don’t know. Her sister seems to have the same texture hair as Amal, thick hair with some wave to it, not big curls (in this photo). Even not blown out, I would think it would just be a little more wave in their hair. And her mother, also in this photo, even if blown out, doesn’t appear to have hair that is curly.

And here Amal is 20 years ago in her late teens.

Her natural texture looks a lot like mine – basically wavy with a bit of curl here and there (goes into ringlets when freshly washed/air-dried, but smooths out into larger waves/a bit of curl in a day or so, or with just a little blow-dry). She definitely doesn’t have curly hair, though she probably has to fight frizz.

      • detritus says:

Oh man do I ever love that wayback photo.
And yeah it looks like she’s just got a lot of volume and texture.
It’s gorgeous hair, but I imagine a lot of work to tame?

Teacakes, your hair sounds beautiful. Waves and curls with a bit of work, or straight with a bit of work. Best of both worlds!

The angle of that first photo is a little creepy. It is from below and almost looks like they are going for an upskirt shot. Intentional or not, it is a subtle reminder of Amal’s body being put on display when she is there to give a speech and it’s not a red carpet event. Women are often objectified and I believe that doing that delegitimizes their authority.

(This is not Amal’s fault and I think her outfit is quite professional)

  4. BeBeA says:

Honestly it’s almost like making a cartoon character the leader of the free world. It seems like now that the position of President of the United States means nothing and others will be running everything for him, the USA and the world are about to change in a big way. Power struggles and GOT the political version where ” We the People” suffer the most! Sad! 2020 Scooby- doo will win an office, if we are still here.

  5. nicegirl says:

I agree. I have had that same opinion about America’s moral standing globally since the cheeto in charge got the primary for the republicans.

We have created a terrifying, and more dangerous – world. Yay, us.

  6. teacakes says:

    She’s not wrong, is she?

the US is supposed to be one of the leading lights of the world in terms of democracy and citizens’ rights/advocating for human rights – and yet here you are, with a President-elect who openly insults and threatens minorities and is known to be a sexual predator, one who said your democratic processes were invalid and “rigged” if they didn’t go his way. And on his election, has proceeded to APPOINT A WHITE SUPREMACIST TO HIS CABINET WTFFFFFFFF (and the next Attorney-General will likely be a segregationist?!)

I know what I think of him, as a non-American. I can well imagine what heads of state would think if he’s the one sitting across from them on any human rights issues, and what kind of credibility they’d think he has (answer: none).

  7. Nimbolicious says:

I don’t care for her, but I agree with her commentary — although mine would be much less subdued than hers.

‘Murica needs all the help it can get right now, from anyone, from anywhere.

  8. Stuffapea says:

There is no benefit to her for getting American citizenship, as
America is the ONLY country in the world that taxes you where ever you live. Once she would have it she would be obliged to declare not only her earned income, from where ever, but also the extent of her other assets and holdings so that America could get its piece. certainly, there are foreign earned income credits and foreign tax credits to help balance out the tax bite. But otherwise, she has nothing to gain from letting Uncle Sam get a looks inside her portfolio. George most likely files a “married-independent” return.

    • Who ARE These People? says:

Agree. Dual citizen with Canada and it’s an expensive, time-consuming pain in the arse to have to file 2 returns. Wouldn’t give up either citizenship – at least for the moment – but it’s a burden.

  9. JRenee says:

His nomination and election has already solidified the lost of some moral standing. The entire world is watching and most of the world is shocked and horrified.

  10. Amelie says:

It’s one thing to give a speech, it’s another to do the heavy lifting to create change. I tend to listen to the ‘heavy lifters’.

I am sure there are plenty of issues to address in Great Britain and Lebanon (and the entire Middle East) re: women’s rights, I wonder why Amal only has the U.S. in her sights?

    • sayy says:

bc US caused the Iraq war, afghan war, punished Pakistan for not allowing them to get through the country without full acquiescence, Libya, Egypt’s appointment of Sisi, Israels full takeover and genocide of Palestinians, Syria, and is now trying to overthrow erdogan to create a syria number 2. So ya i think she as an Arab who has seen what camps that turned into cities with poverty and us sponsored terrorism has a little bit more of an interest in what the us does when it comes to how it affects her home and the world…

      • Amelie says:

I was referring to women’s rights in the Middle East per Amal’s speech. If you consider that in the Middle East countries, woman are still considered chattel, need to be accompanied by a male relative in order to leave the home, need to wear particular garb(headscarf, veil etc) ,may not be allowed to vote or drive or own property, use public swimming pools, try on clothing before buying them etc. etc. there’s a lot more to be rectified there than in the U.S. My point was to ask why she doesn’t do this? The only visit she has made to any camps was quite recent and she was in designer clothes with her entourage.

I won’t argue with you on US foreign policy as I disagree with many aspects of it.

  11. With President Trump: “is the U.S. going to lose some of the moral standing that it has internationally.”

You mean after the Iraq War in 2003 and then learning nothing from that & doing the same thing with Libya…….and then with Syria. Was there any moral standing left to lose?

  12. Nemera77 says:

Really I don’t see anyone paying attention. Most people don’t know who she is or care about what she thinks.

I actually agree with the comment about “Moral Standing” but looking at some of the comments the focus is on her hair and outfit.. so no not many people actually caring about what she said. Is she still working in London. Doesn’t seem to be. Looks like she is on some speaking tour.
