Tracy Anderson’s advice: don’t work out at night, you’ll mess up your sleep

Here are some photos of Tracy Anderson on vacation in Miami two weekend ago. While she has a nice, athletic figure, I tend to think that she doesn’t know how to dress for her body? Even her bikinis are ill-fitting. The bikini tops are too small and too low-cut for her… bolt-ons. Anyway, as we’ve long documented, Tracy has an extensive history of trashing her clients, trashing every form of exercise other than her “method,” and trashing the people who find enjoyment in yoga, cycling, elliptical, running or walking. She is, I believe, a smug piece of work and it never fails to make me happy to think that Gwyneth Paltrow is in business with her and that at some point, that sh-t is going to blow up in both of their faces. So what’s Tracy’s smugness this week? She doesn’t think people should work out at any other time other than the morning. WTF?

Working out in the morning: “I like [working out] first thing in the morning, and I like it every morning, and I like it to be the thing you really protect. You can take on anything during the day and any stressors that happen. There’s so much more to working out than having a great butt or perfect abs — it has to do with our mental health, our attitude, our ability to fight disease and stress. So it’s really important.”

Why people should avoid night workouts: While the Tracy Anderson Method creator says it’s better to work out at night than not at all, she explains that later sweat sessions can prevent us from getting the sleep we need. “Sleep is incredibly important,” she says. “I wish people would go to bed earlier and get up earlier in the morning, because what happens when you [work out] in the evening is your adrenaline kicks in, and then it keeps you up later.”

She’d rather you do 15 minutes as opposed to nothing: “I’m an advocate for experts,” she says. “Go do something strategic, even if it’s 15 minutes of a DVD.”

Don’t hit the snooze button: “If you hit snooze, then you’re settling for less. Get up and get out of bed. I want to hit snooze too! [But] No one needs to feel defeated if they can’t get it in every morning. For women, identifying when your cycle is, you may want to hit snooze, and it’s important we recognize that. There are times when it’s okay to hit snooze because that’s what our bodies need — as long as it’s not a regular habit or it keeps you from owning your best self.”

[From People]

I work out between four and five times a week, and it’s only on the weekends when I manage to get to the gym before noon. And I don’t find that it’s really different for my body than my usual afternoon workouts during the week. The difference might be that I’m actually more tired for the rest of the day the earlier I work out. I do think Tracy still loves to generalize and mock anything that isn’t part of her “method” – plenty of people work out in the afternoon, early evening or late evening and that’s what works for them. While there’s an adrenaline kick, isn’t it true that your body will also flood your system with endorphins, and that after your workout, you may become very tired and calm, because endorphins are nature’s opiate? Meaning that I bet a lot of people feel like crashing after a night workout.

Personally I can’t do any cardio at night (after 8 or so) or I won’t sleep but I know that isn’t necessarily a common thing. Everyone is different.

    • teacakes says:

yeah, I’ve discovered I can’t either – I end up in this weird state between exhausted and wired and can’t go to sleep until the wee hours (and I’m usually out by 1 am, max). It really fucks me up the next day.

That doesn’t mean this lady gets to tell EVERYONE not to work out at night though.

    • Adele Dazeem says:

Ditto. Hate that I agree w her as she is smug but….

  2. Kelsey says:

Before I knew she was crazy, I used to do her workouts before bed. I’m a nkghtowl and the only time I can make is at night.

  3. Cee says:

I always crash 2-3 hours after my workouts. Sometimes I even work out from 9-10 PM, shower, have a light dinner and have the best sleep EVER. 8 full hours of bliss.

Whatever works for each of us, Tracy.

  4. Harryg says:

Ok, I knew that already. Anderson, you are annoying.

  5. Li says:

I sleep better when I do strength training at night. Also noticed that I burn more calories that way.

  6. QQ says:

Frankly Judging by these pics and tracy’s overall tracyness I pretty much am ready to do the exact opposite of anything she ever says

  7. Vivivoom says:

I have delayed sleep phase syndrom, so I usually fall asleep around 5 am. If I work out after midnight, it sometimes helps me fall asleep earlier, around 2 or 3. I’m completely useless in the morning, there’s no way I could work out before noon.

  8. swak says:

Everyone is different and she doesn’t seem to take that into account when spouting her advice.

  9. Arock says:

I’m more focused and do a more varied work out at night. During the day, with all the demands, 2 kids, work, etc I’m always watching the clock or trying to cut corners for times sake. Working out after the kids are in bed and watching Frazier or 30 rock is like zen. Or ID channel, love me some “I Survived”

  10. Shambles says:

It would’ve been perfectly fine for her to say, “I like to work out in the morning, more than I do at night. It keeps me up late.”

But it’s bullsh!t for her to say that’s what should work for everyone. That’s when people get in trouble, when you start making up rules for other people.

The Guru of the lineage of yoga I’m certified to teach in always used to say, “If someone tells you their way is the only way, leave.”

& Yes, I’m still pissed at her for “emotional pot smoking yogis.” I am one of those, and frankly, we are awesome.

  11. teacakes says:

She’s obnoxious, but I have to give her this one – when I was working out at night (done by 8.30 pm), I just could not fall asleep afterwards – I’d end up staying up till 2 or 3 a.m. and be hideously tired the next day.

Some people just do not take well to adrenaline in their systems before bedtime, it looks like I’m one of those.

Would imagine someone like Tracy who doesn’t work a normal job, most of her friends are probably like her, has no idea its hard to fit in a morning exercise routine. Sometimes at night is the only time a person can do it. You either exorcise or you don’t, peoples schedules are different.

    • my3cents says:

Agree. In an ideal world I would get up take my kids to school and then hit the gym.
In reality we rush out the door and go to work, pickup, dinner after school stuff…
So yes I would love to be able to work out in the morning, always envy those moms…

  13. jerkface says:

This woman is a scam artists and a real jerk but I too find that I can’t work out at night because I’m sensitive like that. I like to work out in the middle of the day when no one is at the gym or at the break of dawn because it does feel good. I hate making small talk at the gym. I’m in there pretending godzilla is after me, making my motto SHUT UP AND RUN! LOL

  14. Matomeda says:

I have 3 kids including an infant, and they wake up at 5:30am and I take care of them alone all day until my husband gets home and helps at 5. I *cant* work out sooner. I prefer morning, but it’s night or nothing. And I pass out pretty quickly after 😉

  15. pinetree13 says:

Meh, I’m no Tracey fan but I didn’t find this interview smug. They asked her for her opinion, which she provided. It’s her opinion that working out is better in the morning. She even said that working out in the evening is better than not at all. I can’t work out in the morning but I get what she is saying.

I actually think she comes across well in this interview. I see nothing to criticize in what she said.

I will say that bikini is hideous. Not only does it not flatter her, I’m not sure who it even would flatter. It’s just such an ugly swimsuit. It always baffles me when the rich wear such cheap looking stuff that you know probably cost a small fortune.

  16. Violet says:

I think it depends on your schedule and you personally. I could not work out at night and get good sleep after, but many of my friends who were athletes did, and they never had trouble sleeping.

  17. Miller621 says:

I am not a fan or hers or anyone who’s as judgmental as her. I’ve heard rumors for years she’s bulimic. Anyone that sells what she does for a living but doesn’t even follow her own advice for a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have any impact on the way I choose to do things. I do agree with what she said about doing 15 minutes. Some days I run out of time and I at least squeeze in a quick mile on the treadmill, it’s better than nothing.

That being said personally am a morning workout person. We all know our bodies and what works for us. I have a lot of autoimmune issues and wake up exhausted and in pain, a good day my pain is a 7. As the day goes on I get more exhausted. I am a SAHM of a toddler and we go non stop all day but even on the off chance I take it easy I have nothing left in me at the end of the day to workout. I’ll get up early when we have to be somewhere even if I haven’t slept well to have coffee and stretch and be ready to workout when my daughter wakes up. Than we eat shower and leave. It works for me and ensures I workout daily. One of My girlfriends refuses to wake early to workout and usually goes running after dinner. I always say I can’t imagine working out that late or with a days worth of food in my stomach. It’s a no no but I have to workout before I eat or I get really nauseous.

  18. Citresse says:

I was walking around downtown Toronto a few months ago at around 2am. I was looking for a 24- hour McDonald’s after arriving by VIA train from a trip returning from Ottawa…. the train arrival was late and I was starving. Anyway, to make a long story short, I passed by a 24-hour gym and saw people working out. I thought it was weird but to each their own I suppose. ps- keep in mind I didn’t see anyone in that 24-hour gym over age 30, so this insomniac trend is a young-uns activity it seems.

  19. raincoaster says:

She’s not very good at math or logic. If you go to sleep earlier, wake up early, and exercise then, it’s not actually a different amount of sleep than going to sleep late, waking up later, and exercising then. I work at night, get to sleep around 6am, and wake up at 2pm. People consistently think I’m getting 12 or 14 hours of sleep, because waking up at 2 seems sooooo lazy to them, but it’s eight hours of sleep, same as anyone else.
