Adam ‘Ad Rock’ Horovitz designed a shoe to benefit Planned Parenthood

As if we needed further evidence that Adam “Ad Rock” Horovitz is a total mensch. Ad Rock was part of one of the most successful and groundbreaking groups of all time, the Beastie Boys, and Adam currently spends his time on a variety of projects, like acting gigs, activism and more. Following the election of Donald Trump, Ad-Rock wanted to do something to help support all of the ladies out there. So he designed a sneaker (with pink piping!!!) and the proceeds will go to Planned Parenthood. Here are the kicks:

You can buy the sneakers here at Keep, the LA-based vegan clothing brand. They’re priced at $97, which isn’t the craziest price ever for a good shoe, especially when the proceeds benefit such a great organization. Keep does say that this is a pre-order item – the sneakers won’t be available until February. They are the perfect Valentine’s Day gift! Ad-Rock said this about his association with Planned Parenthood:

Winter’s cold and I couldn’t find a warm sneaker to walk around in. Given the outcome of our current election, it’s gonna get a lot colder before we can feel that summer sun again. So I collaborated with my friend Una [Kim, founder of] Keep shoes not just because I wanted warm sneaks, but because I support small business. I support women run business. I support Asian-American run business. Net proceeds of this shoe will be donated to Planned Parenthood because I support a woman’s right to choose and feel that women should not be punished for making decisions about their own lives and bodies. If you have similar beliefs, you might wanna grab a pair. Or, if you simply support fresh styles, then you too can be part of what peeps in Keeps are doing.

God, I just love him. He might be more “woke” than Mark Ruffalo.

Speaking of how Ad-Rock is awesome, I’m sure most of you heard that the Brooklyn park named for the late Adam Yauch was vandalized following Trump’s victory. It was vandalized with swastikas and pro-Trump messages, because people are f—king awful. Ad Rock came out to the park following the vandalism and he led an “anti-hate rally.” Here are some photos:

The shoe is not my style but I love that he did that for PP. I really like the idea of a warm sneaker. I wear them for work because I teach preschoolers but in winter I tend to switch to boots but they are less comfortable for running around with the kiddos.

I also love that he did the anti-hate rally. It was heartbreaking to see what happened to MCA’s playground. I’m still trying to wrap my head around these acts of hate. So horrifying.

    • Little Darling says:

I’m going to pre order them and when I wear them, looking like a moon walker, I’ll be sure to point out the cause. Because I’m sure my friends are going to be like “dude what’s up with your shoes? Why are they puffy and black? (:

So much love for this guy.

    • BengalCat2000 says:

Me too! Plus he’s married to Kathleen Hanna. They are my celeb dream couple, lol!

      • theothercleo says:

@BengalCat2000: Have you seen “The Punk Singer”, about Kathleen Hanna? I know it sounds ridiculous because I don’t know them but I thought “This is what a marriage should be.” And I don’t even care about getting married.

      • Little Darling says:

Agreed! Kathleen Hanna IS the cool.

      • BengalCat2000 says:

@the othercleo, I have seen that documentary! You should check out the doco about her band Le Tigre…so good!!!
Ot, But Cleo is my kitty’s name 😻

    • Valois says:

      Yeah, Kathleen is amazing!

Can’t believe he was also married to Ione Skye who dated Anthony Kiedis as a teenager.

    • Kitten says:

OBSESSED with him still, to this day.

      Such a good man.

Thanks for covering this story. Fills my heart with warmth

I’m sorry. I don’t know where to put this, right now. If there’s a political thread, I’ll post it there, too.

It’s for those who are interested in financially supporting.
Recount…Wisconsin tripled the estimated amount to recount.

The movement is losing steam.. the donations have slowed down considerably.

Please pass it along, if you haven’t, already.

Aww. I like this. Big up to him.

There is a UK-based group of feminists who are holding events and raising money for Planned Parenthood in the wake of Trump’s election as an act of international solidarity. I was reading their page and they said there has been a huge spike of US women getting IUDs in case low cost contraceptive services get taken away. And I realised I’ve seen quite a few ladies on here talking about getting IUDs but it hadn’t really clicked that they might be choosing this method because of possible PP defunding.

Is this a widespread thing? Because it’s mind-boggling to me.

    • Kay says:

I think the rush to get IUDs is related to the legitimate fear that the funding for affordable contraception will be eliminated when the Affordable Care Act is repealed/revised come January 20. So women are rushing to get IUDs, a longer term form of contraception, that isn’t cheap at full cash price, before Inauguration Day.

      • Sixer says:

Yes, that’s what this group was saying.

I read the article yesterday and put it together with seeing quite a few Celebitches talking about the cost of their IUDs lately.

Here in the UK, healthcare is generally free but we do pay a small amount for medication – about £8 for any prescription (usually lasting a month). But all contraception is absolutely free and women would never make a contraceptive choice on the basis of cost. Condoms are free in sexual health clinics, too.

It’s hugely shocking to me! But what it has done is provide some very sharp clarity about what American women actually mean when they talk about attacks on reproductive rights by elements of the GOP and religious right. It’s not just abortion restrictions: it’s literally EVERYTHING.

      • eggyweggs says:

Get it now, ladies! I said it before, but here goes again: under ACA, insurance companies are REQUIRED to cover IUDs (check on the brands covered; the two biggies are definitely covered). Mine, with insertion at Planned Parenthood, was $8. Same-day service, too! This should even go for crummy insurance.

Second thing, and please do not think that I am happy about the presidential election AT ALL, but this kind of action gives me hope in a dark time in our nation’s history. It feels like the terrible outcome of this election has made people — celebs included — publicly recommit to progressive causes. Like, we got complacent. We stopped being public about the issues that are important to us. We stopped challenging people to do more and be better. Now, we’re stepping up again.

Can I say something stupid? I find him insanely attractive.

This is amazing. This is awesome. I remember the first time that I heard “Girls” and as soon as I heard “Girls to do the dishes”, I tuned out on the group as a basket of douches. And now look at him: married to Kathleen Hanna and designing shoes for Planned Parenthood. Evolution is awesome.

    • pinetree13 says:

I think they did that deliberately to annoy and be tongue-in-cheek. I don’t think they are actually sexist but I know what you mean! “Girls to do the laundry, and clean the bathroom”

    • Amanda D says:

They admitted and apologized many years ago for some of the insensitive material on their debut album. I think those guys were an amazing example of how people can change for the better if one has an open mind!

    • Rachel says:

Lyrics from “Sure Shot,” one of my favorites (RIP Adam):

“I want to say a little something that’s long overdue
The disrespect to women has got to be through
To all the mothers and sisters and the wives and friends
I want to offer my love and respect to the end.”

  8. nicegirl says:

I love this! and will order the shoes

  9. Slowsnow says:

A long long time ago I went to a Beastie Boys concert in Paris where I was living at the time. An all-girl really good band opened for them, Luscious Jackson. The crowd started shouting mysoginistic stuff. I was appalled. When they came on stage, the most amazing guys on earth, the B Boys, gave a lecture on respect, and particularly respecting women artists as artists. I loved them immensely and from there on they were my absolute favorite band. I miss MCA, who died from cancer a few years ago. No more Beastie but Ad Rock and Mike D are still teaching everyone how artists (not celebrities) behave.

    • AJ says:

Luscious Jackson are amazing! I saw them 20+ years ago at a club in Providence,RI. Their drummer, Kate was the original drummer for the Beasties when they first started out and were a punk band.
I will always love the Beastie Boys and I am still sad about MCA.

      • Amanduh says:

Coldplay (I know…bear with me!!) did a GORGEOUS cover of “Fight for Your Right” after his passing and I just sobbed watching it. So beautiful.

  10. Amanda D says:

Adam is such a good man! Love the Beasties!

    I still miss MCA… 🙁

  11. Ramona Q. says:

And they’re vegan, I love that.
