I completely agree with Jag.

Incidentally, I found it interesting when I read Brooke’s book about post-partum depression how normal her life sounded. It’s easy to assume that because someone is famous, they are also mega-rich, live in an enormous house and have lots of staff. Brooke’s life didn’t sound like that at all. She was talking about justifying the cost of a part time nanny for example. It came across as genuine, not PR spin.

I’m on Brooke’s side. The reporters are a bunch of hood rats looking for meal.This woman is clearly ill. there was nothing wrong with Chris disciplining his daughter. Teri is clearly mentally incapacitated and should not be going out with anyone.

When I first heard about this, I was livid and wanted Brooke to prosecute them for kidnapping. After reading this article, my mind is changed. The mother still shouldn’t have been allowed to be checked out by strangers without alerting Brooke – if her mom really is unable to make good decisions, but it doesn’t sound as much like the reporters were unknown rats. As for Brooke moving her mom into her house, I agree with other posters that living with a person with dementia – or Alzheimer’s in my family’s case – can be too much of a struggle for the family and layperson, so putting them where they are supposed to be watched and cared for 24/7 is best.

Kathy Griffin talked about Brooke’s Mom a little bit in one of her Bravo comedy specials. Even though Teri’s alcoholism is tragic, Kathy managed to find humor in it. It really wasn’t any different than any other family that has an alcoholic family member. In short, if they (the alcoholic) gets a few drinks in them, everyone better run for cover because you never know what is going to come out of the person’s mouth. Sometimes the words strike a little too close for comfort. That is what Kathy Griffin described about Teri attending Brook’s wedding. Kathy also makes fun of her parents drinking a lot of wine. Sometimes finding humor in sad situations is the best way to deal. I hope Kathy had Brooke’s permission to cover that in her stand up. She probably did.

I guess you can find sympathy for both sides.

If it’s true that Teri’s suffering from mild-dementia, then it is a very difficult thing for all people involved and I sympathize with both.

On the other hand, coupling that with alcoholism makes me want to lean towards Brooke.

Either way, I don’t blame her for having limited and controlled contact with her mother. Sometimes, it’s for the best.

As for the enquirer, are we surprised at all that they’re sleazy, sneaky and underhanded?

Who cares if the National Enquirer had a previous relationship with Teri Shields? The woman is in a NURSING HOME, which means she obviously isn’t in top condition. Besides which, are you telling me the reporter just went for a friendly visit? No way, he went there to dig dirt.
That is called taking advantage, and I agree that it is just despicable.

I feel bad for Brooke’s mom since she isn’t well, but in Brooke’s defense, she’s had to put up with her raging alcoholic mother all of her life.

Teri is in no position of accusing Chris Henchy of being controlling. Teri was the epitome of a stage mom and controlled Brooke for many, many years.

I often wonder how much of Brooke’s childhood attributed to her depression. I think it went beyond PPD.

Brooke will find peace if she lets go of her issues with her mother.

Life is short. Move the mother closer to where Brooke and the kids live and let her mother see the kids more often, with Brooke supervising.

Her mother’s not fully competent, but still her mother, her responsibility….and there are many benefits in taking the higher road, rather than living small and with bitterness.

My father suffered from dementia for the last few years of his life. The idea that anyone other than family would be allowed to take Brooke’s mother out for any reason is just beyond belief, in my opinion. The day my dad walked over to the neighbor’s to tell them he had witnessed a murder in their home the night before gave us all a shocking idea of just how quickly his mental state had deteriorated.

No, it doesn’t show up “overnight”, but loved ones find all kinds of justification for odd behavior because the reality is so incredibly difficult to accept. It’s also fearful, as you get
a glimpse into how your own life may very well end. It’s not surprising that a family has such a terrible time figuring out how to best deal with this situation. It’s hard for me to read comments from people who obviously have had no first hand experience but feel perfectly okay passing judgment on those who DO have to make tough choices.

Some day you may very well find yourself having to make such a call, so don’t get too flippant about it.
