Emma Stone vs. Ruth Negga: who wins the premiere-fashion face-off?

Two of this year’s potential Best Actresses had their premieres last night. And since there aren’t many stories to go along with Emma Stone and Ruth Negga, I thought I might as well combine these photos. Emma Stone attended the LA premiere of La La Land, a sweet little musical which is getting rave reviews all over the place. Emma is considered a frontrunner in the Oscar race, although her costar Ryan Gosling isn’t getting much awards buzz.

For the LA premiere, Emma chose this somewhat uneventful Prada dress. Something nice: it’s a beautiful color. Something not-nice: I don’t know, I’m just not feeling this. It’s a cute dress for a holiday party, but the thing about Emma Stone is that one of the big reasons why people are excited for her Oscar campaign is that she usually has interesting fashion. Like, we need a certain number of fashion girls attending the awards shows or else it gets really boring. Emma better deliver! PS… I do love her shoe choice here though.

As for Ruth Negga, she will likely get nominated for some big awards for her performance in Loving. Much like my feelings about Emma, I have high hopes that Ruth has a great stylist and that she’s going to rock all of the red carpets. Thus far, I’ve found her style somewhat underwhelming. I get the feeling that she likes dressing up and having fun with it, but… more drama, please! This Valentino look isn’t doing anything for me. She’s been wearing a lot of Valentino this fall though, so maybe she has some connection to the fashion house.

Ruth by a Country Mile… Or a Bird Sleeve if you would.. I hate that blue color cause it always looks Cheap and I don’t understand the overlay/weird cut/ odd Jewel Applique Business of the dress which is then capped by being oddly short?

  2. Jade says:

Ruth has such an amazing face, is it just me or does she remind anyone else of Betty Davis??

  3. Locke Lamora says:

They are both so so pretty. I don’t know lich about Ruth, but Emma is my forever girl crush.

But, both of these looks are underwhelming.

I LOVE Ruth Negga’s dress, but her styling always underwhelms me. She has amazing bone structure, such a beautiful face…she could get away with anything. But instead, she’s styled like Brie Larsen during her Oscar run. (That is NOT a compliment. Brie always had the same look to me.)

  5. Yeahright says:

    Ruth wins.
Everything Emma tries to wear, wears her.
She needs to stop with the couture.

  6. vicki says:

Um girl, Ruth is on the January cover of American Vogue!!!

  7. Mannori says:

Ruth wins but she needs to please STOP with the pouting face and suck cheeks thingy and posing too hard: she doesn’t need any of those tricks, she’s already interesting without any of that, it actually works against her. Leave that to the meh-ones…

Ruth seems like she’s finding a camera smile, understandable that it will take a while. She also seems to have big bags under her eyes or am I seeing things?

  8. OTHER RENEE says:

Seriously? Ruth’s dress looks RIDICULOUS. Almost looks like a red nun’s habit. Emma’s dress is lovely but not exciting. I’d wear it in a heartbeat. Her shoes are fabulous.

  9. jerkface says:

But why can’t they both look nice at the same time? They both look nice. No battle needed.

  10. Lightpurple says:

Emma’s styling is better and Ruth’s dress is more interesting. Ruth is so pretty but she looks tired here.

…emmas facial styling is totally amazing…ruths dress is gorge but I personally dont like red…both women look deeply beautiful….both their movies belong to the 50s tho…

  11. Fiorella says:

They are both nice designs, interesting colours. Emma is still very young looking but no signs of surgery or Botox . Her voice is not my fave though

  12. Jess says:

Ruth wins. Emma’s dress is fine but boring. Love the drama of Ruth’s dress.

  13. Lady Yaya says:

No Joel Edgerton pics? You guys used to like him, back in Hot Guy Fridays…

  14. Abbess Tansy says:

I adore both dresses, especially Ruth’s dress. Emma’s shoes are cute, I wish I could see what shoes Ruth is wearing.

  15. Marianne says:

I don’t like the sleeves on Ruth’s dress so I’d go with Emma.

I’ve saw La La Land at TIFF and am planning on seeing Loving this weekend. Can’t wait for Oscar season 🙂

Also, I do think Ryan has a good shot at getting nominated, but I think the reason why he isn’t getting talked about a lot is that he mainly just has to play “charming” in the movie. I personally found that Emma’s character has a bit more meat to her.

  16. Pandy says:

    Ryan wins. Fugly dresses.

  17. Classy and Sassy says:

Emma looks adorable in that dress. Not sure what Ruth was going for, but NO.
