Chris Pine hates people who ‘spew poisionous vitriol’ on the Internet

Star Trek actor Chris Pine heads for a workout wearing an Enterprise spaceship t-shirt
Chris Pine is turning into one of my favorite new actors. He’s not really new, but with the massive success of Star Trek, he’ll soon be one the biggest rising stars of Hollywood. My affection for him is twofold – he’s really, really hot and his interviews are pretty funny. To promote Star Trek, he did an interview with Cosmopolitan where he basically told women that the way to his heart is through complimenting his wang. Chris’s latest interview isn’t so charming, but I think he may have his reasons. Chris is GQ’s cover boy, and in the interview (quotes via Popeater) Chris badmouths fame, the Internet, and how Star Trek is very “kitsch”:

Chris Pine’s star is on the rise. He plays the young Captain James T. Kirk in the already-a-blockbuster revival of Star Trek. But the actor was worried before the movie became a hit, and he talks about his dislike of the message boards and blogs, what it’s like to fill the shoes of William Shatner and more in the June issue of GQ which hits newsstands May 26.

‘Star Trek’ versus ‘Star Wars:‘ “I was a ‘Star Wars’ kid. The kitsch factor in the original ‘Star Trek’ series is high, but the show manages to take on these huge questions about race, sex, and war. I have a great appreciation for what Mr. Shatner did with the part. There’s a gravity to it, but he’s having fun.”

The Trekkies: “The amount of dissection of the minutiae of this movie…I was blown away by the protectiveness. I’m definitely guilty of looking at the blogs, and I’m not a fan of the anonymity [of the Internet], how it allows people to just spew poisonous vitriol like vomit.”

Making ‘Just My Luck’ with Lindsay Lohan at the height of her fame: “She was making a lot of money and attracting a lot of attention from the paparazzi. It put in stark relief that I don’t want that kind of life.”

[From Popeater]

I totally see the “poisonous vitriol” but to be fair, I think Chris is just speaking in general terms. Because he hasn’t been in the public eye long enough to have made a big (negative) impact on blogs. But then again, I don’t troll the Star Trek sites. I thought the Trekkies were pretty happy with Chris as Shatner’s replacement? Maybe not.

I found the Lindsay Lohan comment interesting. It seems like he’s not trying to bad mouth her, he’s just saying she’s a product of this bad media environment. I would love to know if they hooked up – I doubt they did, but when they made Just My Luck, Lohan still had her life relatively together. A hookup wouldn’t be totally ridiculous. Chris probably has too much sense, though.

Oh Chris, come here rest your head on my chest I’ll make it all better.

  2. Retail Employee says:

Poisonous vitriol is rife in the working world; at least Mr. Pine is making more than minimum wage to deal with this kind of crap. He should be expressing gratitude for the gift of opportunity. Lindsay Lohan is screwed up because of her soul sucking wannabe mother.

Was Chris actually talking about comments made about himself when he made the reference to the anonymity of the Internet allowing people to spew poisonous vitriol like vomit? Because I think that his remark perfectly fits the celebrity gossip blogs, including this one. The people on this site just love to hate on celebrities. Let one of you editors rip into someone, and all the little copy cat fans follow suit. And their opinions are in no way representative of the American public. Reading most of the comments becomes an exercise in overwhelming negativity, and I seldom do it anymore.

    Well said tigerlille.

Except for the part where you’re doing it right now…..

Anyway. As far as your question about Trekkies being receptive to him: I thought that they weren’t? I got the impression that original trekkies were really really unhappy with the movie.

I have yet to see it, but I admit to not having watched Star Trek/Star Wars at all. And trekkies scare me. :X

  6. Iggles says:

I thought the movie was awesome. I saw it twice. I think Pine did a decent job, however, I dislike Kirk in this movie. I don’t think he paid his dues enough. The big draw for me was Spock’s storyline. I think Quinto stole the show!

  7. anon says:

tigerlille, take an honest look at these sites vs. fan sites.

the whole point of these sites (as I see it) is to rip on celebrities and their inanities, their ridiculous attitudes and entitlements, and their lifestyles.

if you want to hear cooing and praise, it’s best to stick to a fan site.

and to be fair, I see a lot of people disagree with what the editors say…that is, an editor will post a negative opinion of someone, and some may agree but there are others who don’t. not everyone becomes a copy cat. and if their opinion does mirror the editors, it doesn’t mean they’re copying the editor, it just means they have the same opinion.

“And their opinions are in no way representative of the American public.”

simply not true. they’re representative of at least a portion of the American public. but no ONE opinion IS representative of the American public. that’s what so great about our country.

And how. I went to bed dreaming of Spock after seeing the movie, POSSIBLE SPOILER! – only I was Uhura. ;p *damn I miss the emoticons, can never get quite get them right.*

I agree with anon . I actually believe there is more truth on celebrity gossip/ blog sites than magazines. All those magazines like Vogue, People,Elle etc.. kiss celebrities’ asses and over hype them to no end. It’s annoying to me to read an Elle magazine with Lindsay Lohan on the cover where the article makes her seem like she’s the most interesting important person on the planet. It makes me want to gag. So If anything, blogs and websites that talk celebrity gossip are more accurate. I don’t even buy magazines anymore. I know at times commenters or blog/website writers can be a bit negative but for the most part they are fair.
I’m sure celebrities don’t like them because they rather see themselves through rose colored glasses. They want to believe their own hype. Thank god for Blogs and websites. Thank god for Freedom of Speech.

Take “spewing poisionous vitriol” out of the internet and what’s left? Online banking?

  11. CC says:

Bob, stop being funny this is a serious matter 😉

You know what else is annoying are these top 10 lists. You know, “hottest woman in the world.” All this rating of actresses in magazines. I mean first, who’s to say who is most beautiful? And second, can’t they just say “hottest actress in the world.” ? That would be at least fair and a little better. I mean, have they actually seen every single women in the world or even in the USA for that matter? I see hotter girls than Lindsay Lohan almost every single day of my life and at least a prettier girl than Megan Fox or Angelina Jolie once a month, who are not famous. So it’s tiring and extremely annoying to read that stuff.
I could give a S*** what this upcoming actor Chris Pine has to say.

  12. HUH? says:

    that and porn, Bob.

Anyone involved with making, re-making or doing a sequel of something like Star Trek, Star Wars, Harry Potter, anything by J.R. Tolkien, (you get where I’m going) has to be prepared for the nerd backlash. People love to complain when it makes them feel important, and in general, fanboys really, really, really need to feel important. He should shrug it off and not let us know it affects him. At least that’s what I’d do if I were so lucky as to be in such a position!

  14. CC says:

Hmm, Maybe I shouldn’t have gone off on that tangent before. I got a little off topic. I should have saved those comments for when there was another Maxim top ten list or something. But it just bothers me when celebrities put down people /gossip blogs and websites-for their comments.
He probably was just referring in the context of fanboys (Treckies) of Star Track who are already saying he can’t live up to William Shatner or soemthing. That wouldn’t be fair to him because the movie isn’t even out yet.

  15. RobN says:

Actually the movie’s been out for more than a week.

I get the feeling he’s going to be one of the actors who get’s all whiney about the press as he’s standing in line at the bank cashing the huge checks those anonymous internet types make possible.

  16. ash says:

saw it, loved it, he was awesome. Spok was great as well. The whole thing was very entertaining. LOVE LOVE LOVED it.

  17. SixxKitty says:

OMG! I hope that Skanktress didn’t get her grubby talons on him!

  18. downtown says:

Actually C and R, I think the colors flew on your previous topics, so that’s all one needed. See that’s the sh*t he’s talking about, people who just see what he says and just twist it into whining, as if he’s that ungrateful, he acutally had a blast form what I hear. I hope he doesn’t turn into one of “those” actors but it remains to be seen, hell Shatner basically let the colors show when he told eveyrbody (under the disguise of a SNL skit) to get a life and yet they still worship him

  19. Ryo says:

Some really hardcore Trekkies were really ripping Pine apart before the movie came out because Shatner wasn’t in it and he just became the focus for it. Some really nasty things were said about Chris. (Chris kind of got it the worst because word got out early on that Quinto had Nimoy’s seal of approval but Shatner never said a word about Chris and all that came out was that there was some kind of “dispute” and Abrams wouldn’t put Shatner in the movie.) I think that’s what he’s talking about.

Of course, now that’s it’s released most of the fans have changed their tune. It’s had quite a good reception with most of the hardcore fan base actually. But I felt bad for him before – that’s a lot of pressure and he was getting ripped to pieces before anyone ever saw him.

And he IS grateful for the opportunities he’s had – I’ve watched probably like 50 different interviews with him and Quinto and each and every time he’s mentioned how grateful he is for what he’s experiencing. Him and Quinto both actually.

I would think Hollywood would love internet comments. It’s a way to read the public’s mind for free. No more paying big bucks to marketing research firms for celebrity Q ratings.

Restaurants encourage customers to drop anonymous critiques about their customer service in suggestion boxes and malls often employ “secret shoppers” to anonymously rate the work of employees. Anonymous internet comments about celebrities are no different than this.

  21. orion70 says:

let the Trekkies hate away, I saw this last night and I loved it. The casting of every character was brilliant. The humour also made it for me.

I probably shouldn’t talk too much about fanboys/girls. I could have squealed when I saw Simon Pegg come onscreen.

Kirk’s “test” where he’s eating the apple and strutting around put me in mind of Dennis Quaid’s Jerry Lee Lewis for some reason.
