Jennifer Lawrence ‘feels a real need’ to speak to her young fans about politics

There are a bunch of new Jennifer Lawrence stories and very few of them are actually interesting to me. The only one I really like is her Good Morning America interview this week, where she discussed why she felt the need to write that Vice essay immediately following the election. Jennifer’s essay wasn’t bad at all – she was basically telling her fans “don’t feel defeated, we still have work to do.” It wasn’t about seeking conciliation with an orange fascist or curling up and ignoring the world. Her argument was: we’re still fighting. Here’s the interview:

Jennifer told GMA:

“I didn’t mean to speak to only people who voted for Hillary, I meant to just speak to the divide … for any presidential candidate, being very extreme is scary, left or right. For me, I was the star of the Hunger Games. So I had a lot of 12-year-olds and 11-year-olds and I know that they look up to me. I know that they’re listening to me and watching me. When the election happened, I couldn’t help but think of those girls who are 18. I completely understand when people say, ‘Just shut up and act.’ But for me there are times where I feel a real need to speak to those girls.”

While I have so many issues with J-Law these days, I’m totally fine with what she says here. Her thoughts were with her young fans, just as Hillary Clinton’s concession speech included a message to those girls and young women: you are valuable, you have worth, and your voice is vital, despite what you hear from President Deplorable.

As for the other Jennifer Lawrence stories… she appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on Monday night. J-Law is a huge fan of the Real Housewife franchises, and she gets very involved in all of the manufactured drama, etc. Here are some clips. I would love to know who “The Lady” is, and who in the world is “Pickle”??

I like the interview. She makes total sense and good for her for starting to speak out on important things. More of THIS JLaw please.
Also her appearance with Laura on WWHL was funny. She’s such a reality tv super fan

Yes it’s all very good but I cannot take her seriously. She is so annoying that I just can’t help but ignore whatever she says.

    • Gill G says:

So because you find her annoying you’re not interested in hearing anything about her that might change your mind? Fair enough…I get that feeling. But for me, this type of interview with her confirms that there’s lots of substance beneath the hype and goofing around.

    • Jess says:

“can’t help but ignore whatever she says.”

hmm, yet you’re quick to comment on every single story she appears in. k there.

    • Val says:

      Yeah same here.

  3. Lucy says:

This is precisely why I remain a fan of hers: Does she say wrong things at wrong times sometimes? Yes, but she’s also smart, capable, sensitive and in touch with what’s going on in the World.

    • Paula says:

I think she’s immature and unthoughtful sometimes, but I appreciate her being aware of her influence on young audiences and using it for good.

    • Nicole says:

Exactly I am the same. Do I wish she would lessen the antics a bit more now that she’s older? Yes but she’s regularly stepped it up in being present PUBLICLY (she could’ve been doing this in private for a while) and doing it for her young fans. That’s someone worth supporting to me even when she messes up

  4. Josefina says:

I still like her, and I think for the most part she’s a pretty fun and well-intentioned person. She has made me facepalm a lot because every now and then she’s inexplicably stupid and gross, but I ultimately think that’s what makes JLaw “so real”. She shows flaws. We see them. Just by following her I know she’s a three-dimensional being with positive and negative traits. Hollywood actors (particularly actresses) are so obsessed with their PR and being perfectly likeable, actually disliking someone at times, oddly enough, makes me like them more.

    • Lucy says:

This right here. She’s real not because she jokes about bodily functions, but because she presents herself as a human being. Not perfect, not always 100% likeable, not always a bombshell, not always a goofball.

    • Otaku Fairy says:

That’s pretty much how I feel about her too.

  5. Esmom says:

It’s good to hear she’s using her platform with young fans like this. I’ve spent a fair amount of time with teenagers during this election cycle and they get their influences and inspiration from an odd variety of places, celebs included. To hear a rational, substantive message from one is refreshing.

  6. Miss V says:

This is a good interview, and the Jennifer Lawrence we should be seeing more of, please. I cannot stand her other persona, but she’s much more tolerable when she shows a bit of maturity.

  7. perplexed says:

Is that all of her real hair? I don’t remember it being that long a few weeks ago.

Sorry, I know my comment is shallow. I realize her point about politics is important.

  8. Betsy says:

    I like her point.

I do not like her bleeding nipple dress.

  9. shanaynay says:

OMG…The Lady, The Raging Lady, Lady in Red, Lady in Red……Taylor Swift?!?

Pickle…Idk…for some reason Katy Perry springs to mind lol

  10. Otaku Fairy says:

Hopefully the takeaway for young first-time voters and any other first-time voters upset about Trump’s win isn’t going to be, “I guess my vote doesn’t mean anything after all.” I’m hoping this disaster will at least make people less apathetic instead of more.

  11. Vox says:

I wish Jennifer would feel the need to stfu about bodily functions. Not pertinent to this article, just a general sentiment. I do appreciate it when she says insightful things, though,
