Did Casey Affleck & Sylvester Stallone beef over seating at the Golden Globes?

FFN_KMFF_Golden_Globes_arrivals_010817_52276823

Sylvester Stallone was a returning Golden Globe winner on Sunday (he won last year for Best Supporting Actor for Creed) and he was also at the Globes as a proud papa. His three daughters were the “Miss Golden Globes,” the on-hand presenters tasked with shepherding drunk celebrities off the stage and passing out Golden Globes to the other presenters. But there were few-to-no cutaways of Stallone and his wife Jennifer Flavin during the telecast. Why was that? There was a seating snafu and Stallone is maybe carrying a grudge about it.

Despite his three daughters sharing the title of Miss Golden Globes and having the role of introducing best picture, Sylvester Stallone was nowhere in sight during the show. Now it appears that his absence was due to a seating issue at his assigned table, which included Manchester by the Sea star Casey Affleck, the film’s producer Matt Damon and its writer-director, Kenneth Lonergan.

According to multiple sources, things got testy after Stallone, 70, and his wife Jennifer Flavin walked up to their table during the show’s opening number to find only one available open seat.

One show source tells PEOPLE that no one, including Affleck, 41, and Damon, made an effort to accommodate the Stallones, who grew frustrated and seemingly embarrassed, and eventually retreated to the green room backstage. The couple would not return to the table and watched the show from backstage instead. Another source close to the situation agrees there was “confusion” over the seating but insists there was no ill will towards Stallone from Affleck or anyone at the table.

“There weren’t enough seats and so there was confusion, but it wasn’t personal against him,” says the source, adding that an additional chair was brought to the table and seats facing the stage were eventually freed up. (At that point, Stallone had little interest in returning to his table to sit with Affleck and the rest of the Manchester group, several sources tell PEOPLE).

Later in the evening, Affleck, who went on to win a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama, crossed paths with Stallone in the green room and attempted to apologize for the seating snafu, but Stallone was not receptive.

Stallone’s rep did not comment on the specifics of the report, but offered, “The story you refer to is an interesting rumor – but a rumor nonetheless. Sylvester Stallone had a wonderful evening attending and presenting at the Golden Globes and celebrating with his family and friends.” Affleck’s rep offered no comment.

[From People]

The only thing I find unbelievable (as in, I don’t believe it) is that Casey Affleck would magnanimously go up to Stallone and try to make peace about the seating situation. I also have my doubts about whether there was any “ill will.” But sure… this kind of thing happens, especially when the awards-show seating is by table. Most of the big movies have entire tables, but for smaller movies, you might have to share your table with other people. It sounds like the Manchester by the Sea table was supposed to share and there weren’t enough seats. It also sounds like a “Hollywood is like high school” issue. We’re the cool table, you can’t sit with us!

I think Affleck is a entitled twat and Damon is a smug twat, so it absolutely does not surprise me that they would refuse to make an effort to accommodate a veteran actor, for whom it was obviously an important night, given his kid’s involvement. Honestly, screw their ‘nice guy’ act.

    • SilverUnicorn says:

      Agree.

    • Jaded says:

I view it like a wedding, if I show up yo my table and there is a seat missing I go to the organizer, was some one else at the table exepected to stand the whole night?

      • Clare says:

@Jaded, you’re absolutely right – but the polite and kind thing is also to offer your seat to someone who is 30+ years older than you (or at least to his guest!), while the issue is sorted out. Or at least stand up and join them, make small talk, until the issue is resolved, so they aren’t standing there awkwardly.

Although truth be told, my opinion of Affleck and Damon is heavily colored by their history of sexual assault and remaining bodies with people who perpetrate sexual assaults.

      • Jaded says:

@claire sadly Stallone was also accussed of sexual assault of his half sister

      • Clare says:

@Jaded – ugh really? Gross. Doesn’t make smug and smugger any better, though!

      • Kori says:

There’s more than one accusation: http://baltimorepostexaminer.com/did-sylvester-stallone-molest-his-half-sister/2015/08/08#sthash.xDrJP5Eu.dpbs

But it still doesn’t exempt Affleck either. If for no other reason, give Jennifer Flavin a place to sit and watch her daughters while it’s worked out.

    • Tiffany :) says:

To be fair, it was also a big night for Affleck, as he was predicted to win best actor. This is the organizer’s fault. Affleck is on my shit list for the assault allegations, but I don’t think the Manchester team should be faulted for this. The golden globe girls are a pretty minor role in the whole scope of things. I find it odd that they were seated together at all.

    • JennaR says:

      @clare I agree too.

  2. Bridget says:

Wait, so the Golden Globes didn’t triple check their table assignments? And didn’t have an event person on hand to fix a problem like that immediately? No place cards? Does this mean one of the Manchester folks brought an extra guest? How does this even happen?

And of course none of them moved. Matt Damon seems like someone who has been told for so long what a nice and wonderful guy he is, he’s just been pumped up to the point where he thinks he can justify any of his thoughts and decisions because he’s ‘nice’ so it must be okay.

    • Rachel says:

That’s what I’m thinking. Seems to me the issue would be with the organizers of the event unless someone with Manchester did in fact bring an extra guest, which would be incredibly rude. Barring that, how could the organizers not double and triple check the seating arrangements???

      • Clare says:

It does seem a bit amateur hour, doesn’t it?

      • Karen says:

They did have place cards. John Legend’s had his last name spelt wrong, so I’m going with just a bad coordinator all around.

      • Bridget says:

Though would it have killed one of them on-nominated Manchester people to get up for like 20 minutes? (Looking at you, Damon)

      • MamaHoneyBadger says:

Misspelled “Legend”? How does one do that?? Yikes…

      • velourazure says:

Shoddy organizing. So if Affleck or Damon gave up their seat, where would THEY go? Take another person’s seat and on and on the farce goes? And since when did Sylvester Stallone become some Grand Duke of American Cinema who needs to be “accommodated”?

I’m surprised these venues don’t explode from all the puffed up egos.

      • Bridget says:

Damon wasn’t in the movie, he was there as a producer but it wasn’t exactly his ‘moment’. As stated in the article, another seat was added to the table and no one expected to just ‘give up their seat’ but moment or not it wouldn’t have killed anyone to have been courteous in the meantime.

    • dappadaph says:

As a event planner who does University events, we make sure we are on hand for situations like this. So yes bad coordination.

    • lucy2 says:

Yeah, this is clearly the event planner’s fault. Considering this is a major event, that’s pretty embarrassing.
However, if I were another person seated at that table, I’d be saying to everyone “shove over to make room” and waving down someone to get an extra chair and place setting.

    • moon says:

This. I don’t believe Matt Damon is the nice guy he pretends to be for his image.

Also seems like press is keeping quiet on Casey Affleck because mentioning his win would lead to more press about his sexual harassment charges. I guess the press strategy is to keep quiet till the final oscar home run?

  3. Mia4S says:

You know I get that Creepy Affleck’s hair is likely for a movie, but with a little careful styling he could look less like the stereotype of a sexual harasser we all know him to be. Just….ewwww. His outsides match his insides I guess.

  4. CidySmiley says:

Affleck looks like a wild bear man fusion with that raggedy a** beard.

    Thats all.

  5. Talie says:

Maybe Stallone would’ve been more comfortable watching the show from Mar-a-Lago.

  6. Pix says:

I don’t know why, but I love this story. Best gossip of the day.

    • detritus says:

I just wish they got into fisticuffs.

      • MamaHoneyBadger says:

My money would be on the old dude. I can’t see Affleck taking a punch well, not even from a 70-year old man. (Although I bet Stallone’s as tough as someone half his age.)

      • shelly says:

Mrs Stallone would proper bitch slap Damon as well, by the look of her. And then get all Jason Bourne on him with a pair of tweezers and a nail file from her handbag.
        That would be gossip heaven.

  7. Jaded says:

This story makes o sense, aren’t these events planned with a seating map? Nobody would get in without an invite and everyone has assigned seats if there was an issue it would be planning? Also Stallone wife needs to chill on the plastic surgery, she looks terryfying. On a whole other note can the globes get rid of this stupid miss golden nepotism crap.

    • Birdix says:

It’s that same squinty eye Melania/Sarah Jessica Parker look. Too much eye makeup? Filler?

    • supposedtobeworking says:

I agree about the story – I have seen multiple pictures and videos with Stallone in the audience, including during Meryl’s speech. Could there have been an error early on? But I doubt it lasted most of the show.

    • holly hobby says:

Yes Jennifer Flavin used to be stunning. She looks really different here. At first I thought she was Melania. So sad.

  8. Deedee says:

Affleck looks like his brother in law, Joaquin Phoenix, looked like when the latter “quit Hollywood to become a rap singer” and make a documentary about it. Just no.

  9. Bex says:

Who knows how this went down, but you think you’d make some effort to find space for someone when it’s obviously a big night for their family, stupid as the whole ‘Miss Golden Globe’ thing is.

And speaking of Casey Affleck- did he somehow escape press after he won? I’ve seen the Q&A sessions on YouTube with every other major winner, but his is almost conspicuous by its absence. Maybe it’s just not gone up yet, because he clearly took pictures for the press backstage.

  10. Pantalones en fuego says:

The more I hear about Casey Affleck the less I like him. Damon is following closely behind him.

  11. als says:

Stallone is the coolest at any table.

    • Nancy says:

I think he was cool at the beginning of his career when his first wife typed his Rocky scripts….then he hit it big, dumped Sasha and married Brigette (sp) and went on to dump her…then wife mid life crisis wife Jennifer with whom he had his daughters. Who does this remind me of.

  12. Kate says:

I don’t see how this is Affleck’s or Damon’s or anyone at that tables problem unless they hid a chair or had their feet up on one or refused to make room if an extra chair was provided. It doesn’t sound like any of that happened though.

How where they meant to ‘accomodate’ Stallone? It’s an event with planned seating, they couldn’t just go take a chair from another table. What were they meant to do, have two people share a seat? Leave?

Stallone should have just flagged down someone working the event and asked for an extra chair. It’s not that hard. That he decided to sulk about it in the green room all night rather than actually attempt to rectify the situation says a lot about him.

    • Bridget says:

The implication being made is that the Manchester crew were jerks about it.

    • Oriane says:

Shouldn’t the men stand up when a lady arrives, anyway? They could have collaborated, stood up all together while the ladies were seated, and worked together to flag down an organizer… all of them remaining seated when a couple is looking for a missing seat looks like saying “your problem, can’t be bothered to even be polite, just go away”

      • Kate says:

Do you really need half a dozen people to
flag down an organiser? It’s not a hard task that needs to be planned out and actioned as a group.

If Stallone could find his way back to the green room, he could find someone to get a chair.

      • Bridget says:

Again, the implication isn’t that they just needed another chair, but that the Manchester crowd wasn’t particularly interested in making room. Remember, the event is a full dinner, AND camera time is a consideration when it comes to the placement of individuals at the table. Not to mention, have you ever just pulled up a chair and sat down at a completely set table? The only way there’s room is if people make room for you.

  13. hey-ya says:

…jeez…this must be why so many older a listers avoid awards ceremonies…jeez…no respect…

  14. lucy2 says:

Why do I have a feeling like the Miss Golden Globes thing was used to launch a reality show. The Stallone Sisters?

  15. I Choose Me says:

I believe something happened if only because this story is so out of left field. Whether or not it wet down as reported is another matter.

  16. Aaron Fa says:

Jennifer Flavin looks like Melania Trump.

  17. TheOtherSam says:

Casey & Damon are douche extraordinaires, they could have made a small effort to perhaps accommodate or flag down some event staff. But I wonder if this is a case of the Stallones perhaps muscling in where they weren’t assigned?

Traditionally the parents of Miss GG are seated somewhere in the middle of the venue, not the front. I can recall this from past shows. I’m thinking Sly and the Mrs weren’t happy with their assigned seats, and tried to hustle into one of the front tables? It would be such a huge error on the Event Managers end to not have two seats for a big star like Stallone, at one of the front tables. Can’t see that happening. And the Manchester-by-the-Sea table would have been full.

Either way more bad pr for Casey. Can’t say I feel sorry for him given his issues.

  18. S says:

Stallone is the elder. Just based on that people should have got up and accommodated.

  19. Genna says:

There was a gossip blind (I know) on seating arrangement fights before the globes so maybe they’re the answer and there’s something going on between Affleck and Stallone?

Can’t say I feel bad for either one of them but I feel a little bad for Afflecks new girlfriend who had to watch from the green room instead of going to the actual awards.
