Jamie Dornan likes it when girls are ‘down’, ‘girls who’ve got their sh-t sorted’

I can’t believe that we’re already in another cycle of promotion for another Fifty Shades movie. The first go-around was for Fifty Shades of Grey around this time in 2015. That promotional tour was flat-out painful, because much like their chemistry on-screen, Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson act like they sort of hate each other in real life too. To be fair though, I think Dakota was going to be the worst part of Fifty Shades of Grey. She was not – she was actually one of the strongest parts (of a bad movie). Jamie was the one who sucked. I’m hoping that the second film, Fifty Shades Darker, will show him to be a better actor. We’ll see. Anyway, Jamie covers the February issue of GQ Australia – the interview is basically the same as this newish Cosmopolitan about FSD and what he likes in a woman:

What we can expect from FSD: “We pick it up maybe four or five days after the first movie ends. In that time, he’s managed to grow a bit of stubble, which is pretty impressive after four days. He’s more open in Darker. He’s more willing to compromise and to alter himself for the good of the woman he loves, which I think is important. There are so many aspects of him in the first book and the first movie that you haven’t seen changing, and you feel that he’s so set in his ways, so stubborn. But that’s what Ana does to him — he’s willing to make changes and that’s very evident in Fifty Shades Darker. She makes him a better person.”

Whether he would ever have a Red Room of Pain: “I’d never in a million years have a Red Room. I learned from doing the research for the films that it’s just so far from what works for me. And I’ve got kids, so I’d be dealing with some pretty heavy locks. I would save some money by not building a Red Room.”

His advice for Christian Grey: “Loosen up a bit! Like, relax. Get some guy friends. He’s obviously been through some horrific things in his youth that have colored who he is today, but he needs to let his hair down a little bit.”

What he finds attractive in a woman: “Girls who are at ease with themselves, in whatever sort of way that manifests itself. Girls who are ‘down.’ Sorry, I say that word very funny in my accent. And I guess I have my own meaning of it: girls who’ve got their sh-t sorted and are comfortable with who they are. If who they are is a bit unhinged, that’s fine as long as they’re accepting of it! I like laughter — I like trying to make people laugh, and I like when people make me laugh. I think my wife’s very funny, so we have a giggle a lot.”

[From Cosmopolitan]

My interpretation of “down” is different than his. When I say someone is “down,” it means “they’re cool with whatever freaky sh-t is about to go down” or it just means “they’re down to hook up” (which could be the same thing!). He makes “down” sound like someone who pays their bills on time and never forgets a bikini wax. I sort of don’t get this: “If who they are is a bit unhinged, that’s fine as long as they’re accepting of it!” He’s okay with crazy just as long as they know they’re crazy? I think a lot of dudes like crazy, despite what they say to the contrary.

As for the Red Room stuff… he was asked a lot of question two years ago about his kinks and such and he always came away sounding rather judgy and NOT sex-positive. I wonder if someone at the studio was like, “Try to keep it light, we need the kinkos to come out for this.” Which is wrong, because no self-respecting kinko wants to see these milquetoast Twihard fan-fiction movies.

I just can’t find him sexy. He looks to me like he sprays when he talks. cringe.

    • Lulu says:

I can see that everyone who is commenting on THE JAMIE DORNAN are still in the immature stages of life! For those of us who have lived life a bit longer can tell you that this entire trilogy is nothing but a beautiful love story! Jamie Dornan is the perfect Christian Grey and the most handsome MAN in the universe! Dakota Johnson is also a perfect fit and very beautiful!

      • ELANDA HINTON says:

I love him in this movie and he is so sexy to me; they chose the right man for this part! Dekota Johnson and Jamie Dornan are a perfect match; they really made the film good to watch! I have looked at FSOG at least 10 times and ! will be at the movies to watch this one, buy it, and I will record it when it comes on tv.

      • Wilma says:

You guys slay me! 😂 Good that you’ve got something to be passionate about!

  2. INeedANap says:

I never thought I’d say this, but Dakota Johnson deserves better.

  3. Red says:

I like him! He’s saying it’s not for him, how is that judgey? I also think he’s means confidence. Like no matter the personality, as long as you own who you are. Idk, I find him quite endearing during interviews.

    • mia girl says:

I agree. I find him very likable in interviews. Plus see: THE FALL.

      • tealily says:

The Fall has given me complicated feelings about Jamie. Is he a beautiful man? Yes. But… I’m also slightly appalled by him. I’m not sure I can see him past that role!

      • Grey says:

THE FALL OMG. He is so amazing in that show. Like it makes me sad he is doing Fifty Shades after that show, because he did the most amazing job with that character. So glad others have watched it, I waited not very patiently for it to get on Canadian Netflix for the third season.

      • KB says:

I was attracted to Dexter and Paul Spector. I think I’ve got a problem.

ETA: This was a joke, I just think both actors are hot

    • KB says:

I love Jamie! I think he’s got complicated feelings about playing this character. I think he accepted for his career and maybe then realized the relationship is borderline, if not completely, abusive. Of course, he seems fine playing a serial killer, but there are far fewer watching The Fall than Fifty Shades.

I think it’s good they let him have stubble, because he’s one of those guys that looks much better with facial hair.

      • Jan says:

I like Jamie and yes, he looks much better to me with facial hair because he looks about 15 without it. And his Ulster accent is to die for. Regarding FSOG, of course he did it for the exposure and the money despite the distasteful character and storyline.. He’s not well known and the exposure this series is giving him is worth a few months of cringeworthy interviews. His wife must be very cool if she’s okay with millions of women drooling over her man. I’m not sure I would be.

  4. Loopy says:

Is that his wife she is cute, why in the heck is she wearing that, does absolutely nothing for her.

    • tealily says:

Oh, I disagree! I think she looks lovely.

      • Loopy says:

I didn’t mean she should be in a bandage dress or a LBD, just seems a peculiar choice but its just my opinion.

    • Anett says:

Check out her other funky, teribble outfits, there are plenty of them.

    • Jan says:

It might be that the photo was taken during her last pregnancy. Maternity wear? I read somewhere that she owns her own vintage clothing shop so she can probably has her pick of all kinds of goofy outfits from the past.

  5. ravensdaughter says:

Does Jamie have his s–t sorted?

  6. Marcy says:

He can sort his sh*t sorted with me and I will get his kinks out to play

  7. QueenB says:

“In that time, he’s managed to grow a bit of stubble, which is pretty impressive after four days”
and people say there is no character development…

  8. Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Have never got him – he’s not a great actor and looks wise does nothing for me plus he’s a douche. He cheated on Keira Knightly and there has been rumours that he cheats on his wife as well.

Dakota seems like a sweet person, ITA she’s the best thing about those movies and thats saying a lot. She’s a decent enough actress but I don’t see her winning any Oscars.

    • KB says:

He didn’t cheat on Keira. Do you have links for these rumors? I’ve never heard anything about him cheating on his wife either, so if you’ve got links for that, I’d appreciate it as well.

I googled both and found nothing, so…

    • Wilma says:

I thought it was the other way around with Keira?

  9. VirgiliaCoriolanus says:

My thing, that I will never ever get over with him…….is that he accepted a role in Fifty Shades, etc….and then started to act like he was completely “over it”….by completely dismissing the character/picking the character apart (which YES, do that….but is also kinda wtf, I’m sure that’s not what they wanted you to do when they hired you for it)…………..but then turns around, on an interview for “The Fall” and talks about how he “play” stalked a woman.

    SO WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

I think he took the role for the money/visibility, but is too chickenshit to say so, so he acts like a dick.

    • KB says:

I think the difference is that Fifty Shades has the potential to normalize abuse. I haven’t seen the movie or read the book, but I’ve read articles about the response from the S&M community and they’ve called it an abusive relationship.

In The Fall, it’s clear that his character is despicable. The fact that you’re supposed to like him in Fifty Shades and like their relationship, makes all the difference.

He’s also had two daughters since he signed on, and I’m guessing that’s got to weigh on his mind as well.

  10. Borincana en la luna says:

The fact that I find him far more appealing in The Fall than in any 50 shades trailer is alarming, to say the least.

  11. Insomniac says:

I keep completely forgetting who this guy is in between FSOG film promotions. I see his face and think “Now which one was he again? Was he in Game of Thrones, or Downton Abbey, or something? Was he Superman?” I’m usually good at remembering who these folks are, but he continues to elude me.

  12. Ever bloom says:

The best erotic literature I have ever gotten my hands on was Lady Chatterley’s lover, dirty and yet graceful. I found it in my brother’s study desk when I was looking for some notes. They never knew I read it, coming from a conservative Muslim family I truly felt empowered in secret defiance.

    • Jan says:

Congrats. Reading something like that is even more fun when done in secret under the covers. It’s so deliciously naughty, isn’t it.

  13. ash says:

but Keira Knightley who he dated was just that….and he self-sabotaged that because supposedly he was jealous of her having her ish together and being as he would call it “down”

  14. Squiggisbig says:

Do these movies actually make any money?

    • Harrie says:

FSOG made a half billion dollars in its theatrical release. Then there were the dvd,Blu-ray, and pov monies. It more than did OK.

  15. Tig says:

I thought these comments were fine- he’s a gorgeous looking individual, esp in motion. I thought he held his own in Arachnoid against Cillian M. Will be interesting to see if pt 2 does the box office as the first. If not, will they dump the third film on demand right away?

  16. Pam says:

Her dress looks like what I wore when I was 9 months pregnant in satin 😊 Comfortable though!

  17. Mark says:

Anyone who thinks he’s a bad actor should watch all 3 seasons of The Fall….he’s incredible in it and totally steals the show from Gillian Anderson, which is no easy feat as she is terrific in this as well. Clearly the writer needs to do a little more research. If Dornan sucked in 50 shades (sorry but not by cup of tea as a movie) then it is clearly the directors fault.

    • Harrie says:

I think the writer and editor were to blame. I read the books AFTER I saw the movie because a friend said the film didn’t make sense the way it was released. Christian was socially awkward in the books. He had never had real dates and didn’t understand women…Or anyone else for that matter. His horrific childhood was not brought out in the movie the way it was in the books. Hopefully FSD fleshes out the character. Christian was portrayed correctly based on the books, but the explanations for his behavior was never really explained. Dornan did a good job of being the Christian in the books.

      • Cintia says:

Agreed. Foley is an awesome director and I expect Darker and Freed to be superior movies to FSOG.

  18. bbbb says:

He has the most beautiful hands, skin, legs, and eyebrows.

I watched him on The Fall, and I could see why the character he played came off as so intriguing while being such a monster. His eyes are so unsettling in the best way possible.

At the height of his modelling career, JD was the # 1 male top model in the world. Had no competition coming close. He likes to cover all that up now for whatever reason, but I think it’s a mistake.

    • Jan says:

I kind of think he just did modeling as a job until the acting thing happened for him. Just a temporary thing to pay the bills.
