Lin-Manuel Miranda: ‘I’m not gonna lie, I’m excited to go to the Oscars’

I say this every year, but one of my favorite parts of Oscar season is the series of reaction-pieces from people who have just been nominated for an Oscar. Some people are too cool for school, and they merely offer a canned, rehearsed statement thanking the Academy. Other people are unapologetically gleeful and giddy. Lin-Manuel Miranda was gleeful, giddy AND too cool for school. He’s already won everything else – literally – and now he’s been nominated for an Oscar for Best Song, for his work on Moana (the song is “How Far I’ll Go”). While I think there’s a really good chance that one of the songs from La La Land will win, I also think that Hollywood loves Lin and they want to reward him too, so why not fulfill his EGOT? If he wins the Oscar, he’ll be the youngest EGOTer in the history of EGOTs. Magnificent.

Anyway, Lin-Manuel has been in London for a few months working on Mary Poppins Returns with Emily Blunt. That’s where he was when he learned about his Oscar nomination – on the set, eating Indian food and watching a tape-delay of Roger Federer play in the Australian Open quarterfinals. I LOVE THIS. Game respects game. Federer = Lin-Manuel.

Where he was when he learned about his Oscar nom: “I was on my lunch break from this movie I’m working on, and I was watching the Australian Open on delay from this morning. So I still don’t know whether Federer wins or not, but he’s doing really well. My phone vibrated off the table. I didn’t know the time because I’m in London, so I messed up. I didn’t know when the nominations were going to be announced because I can’t do math. [Laughs] It literally started buzzing off the table, and that’s when I found out.

Plans to celebrate: “I don’t know! I guess I’ll pop a little something of bubbly with my wife when I get home from work tonight. I think that’s about as crazy as I’m going to get!

His first Oscar nomination: “Ooh, you say that like there will be more. How exciting! [Laughs] No, I’m not gonna lie, I’m excited to go to the Oscars. I’m not even a little jaded, especially about the Oscars. I’m the kid who used to tape the Oscars and memorize Billy Crystal’s musical monologues. And you know, the Jack Palance running jokes… I used to tape them every year, so I’m thrilled to get to go to the party. I’m that dork. The fact that I’m going to get to go to the Oscars is actually a crazy big deal. And I’m really just so excited for the entire Moana team. I mean, I worked on the movie for the past three years. They’ve been working on it for five years. It’s a wonderful sort of congratulations from many, many years of hard work, so I’m thrilled to be a part of it.

Going up against two songs from La La Land: “Oh, it’s great. I’ve known Benj [Pasek] and Justin [Paul, who wrote La La Land’s lyrics] a long time. We share an orchestrator, and we’ve shared a lot of laughs over the years, so I’ve been thrilled watching their success. This is going to be their year because Dear Evan Hansen is also a motherf—ing great score, and that’s on Broadway right now. So I think they’re going to have a really great night, and this is going to be great practice for them for June. And then Sting! Sting and Justin Timberlake! What! It’s a crazy category. It’s a mad libs of a category.

He’s excited about the screeners: “From what I understand, one of the perks of being nominated is you get to be a part of the academy and one of the perks of being part of the academy is screeners, so I’m really down for some screeners right now. So, you know, hook a brother up.”

[From EW & the LAT]

I just love him. I love that he says “I’m not gonna lie, I’m excited to go to the Oscars. I’m not even a little jaded, especially about the Oscars.” I feel like he always tries to keep his sense of childlike wonder, especially about new experiences. I mean, he’s literally won everything else, from multiple Tonys to an Emmy to a Pulitzer and more. He’s been honored by everyone and everything for his genius. And he’s still super-jazzed to go to the Oscars and hang out with Michael Shannon and Viola Davis. God, I hope he wins.

I’M EXCITED FOR YOU TOO, LIN. Also, because I will enjoy the irony of Puerto Rican becoming the youngest EGOT winner of all time in a time when white people are making a racket about immigration.

    • SpunkyPR says:

And I believe he may be the second Puerto Rican? Isn’t Rita Moreno an EGOTer?

    • squeezeolime says:

“white people” aren’t making a racket about immigration, a**holes are making a racket about immigration. please practice what you preach by not generalising.

      • Veronica says:

White people are the ones with the power and the desire to remove “undesirables” from the American landscape, a group that is overwhelmingly defined as non-white. You want to play respectability politics, you can kick around with Richard Spencer. *I* am a white woman who’s fed up with splitting hairs on the issue. The polls showed that whites overwhelmingly supported Trump, INCLUDING white women. That isn’t generalization – that’s a FACT supported by the data in the election polls. We don’t get to not own that. If you’re mad about people generalizing white people as racist and ignorant, then direct that anger at the right people – the white people who voted a racist demagogue into the most powerful position in American country.

      • Anni says:

Good point, squeezeolime. Trump voters have other things in common besides just being white….and data from the election polls supports that, too. How about the fact that they all have a tendency to vote Republican? That’s KIND OF A BIG ONE.

I worked my ass off trying to convince people of ALL races not to vote a reality tv show host into office. We must be VERY careful not to generalize….that is the first step towards divisiveness.

    SO EXCITED FOR LIN.
I do love this dude. Following him on Twitter is so much fun. His work is enjoyable (yes I’ve seen Hamilton twice and ITH twice as well). And I loved Moana. It’s easy to be excited for someone that clearly enjoys his work most days and really wants to spread the love of music around. That’s what I love most about Lin.
And he is not wrong about the LLL music producers…Dear Evan Hansen is this years Hamilton. It’s going to win everything. If you live in NYC I suggest getting tickets. I went during its opening week on Broadway (after missing its off Broadway run) and laughed and cried through the entire show. Cannot wait to see it again

  3. Soprana says:

Even if he doesn’t, his career shows no signs of stalling. I’m sure he’ll be a winner in the next 5 years, if not before

  4. Crox says:

I really like his attitude. The “I’m too cool to be giddy over a nomination” crowd always seems phony to me.

  5. Jeesie says:

I do really hope he wins, but I won’t be sad if La La Land gets it. It’s pretty rare these days to have a popular live action musical in contention, and Lin’s going to have a ton more chances now he’s Disney’s go to guy.

I think he has a good shot though since two La La Land songs have been nominated. The studios been pushing City of Stars, but Audition is right up the Academy’s alley, so that could split the votes. Just so long as Justin Timberlake and his stupid, stupid Trolls song doesn’t win.

Anyway, love Lin. Honking for more Lin coverage over here!

  6. OriginallyBlue says:

Love him, he’s so delightful, but really I’m going to need him to win. I usually hate kids movies and only took my daughter to see Moana because we were late to the other movie I wanted to see. OMG!! I swear I liked it more than her and I cannot wait for it to come out on DVD/Blu-ray.

  7. Insomniac says:

I am so happy and thrilled for him. He really has been a rare ray of light in a lot of darkness these past couple of years.

  8. minx says:

    Love LMM!

  9. Lucy says:

He deserves everything!! I hope he wins, and I also hope they invite Alessia Cara (the young Canadian singer who recorded the song) to perform it at the ceremony!

    • OriginallyBlue says:

Really? I like her voice and a couple of her songs, but I don’t like her version. I hope they get Auli’i Cravalho.

      • Moneypenny says:

I agree, Auli’i’s version is much better in my opinion. Alessia’s is good too, I just prefer the film version.

  10. Lauren says:

I really hope he wins, because “How Far I’ll Go” is brilliant, but I also think am sad that “We Know The Way” wasn’t nominated, because it’s beautiful. “There You Are” is also incredible. Actually, the whole score from Moana was great, I’m kind of upset it wasn’t nominated.

This rambling, so I’ll just say I love that soundtrack.

  11. Voldielocks says:

Can’t remember where I read this description of him, but it’s so fitting: human sunbeam. Is that not perfect? 😄

  12. Ashley says:

If this was any other year I’d want LMM to win, but THIS year it’s all about Pasek and Paul! They’re next to have an EGOT.
