Paris Jackson covers Rolling Stone, says her dad was murdered

Paris Jackson is on the cover of Rolling Stone. Since she turned 18 last April, she moved out of her grandmother’s house, brought her tattoo count to over 50 (some being slipped in when she was still underage) and started working on her multi-hyphenated careers. I cut Paris a lot of slack because I cannot imagine what her life was like, although she speaks quite glowingly of it in this interview. I just think having been in almost complete seclusion and then thrust into the spotlight because of your famous father’s death must have been a tough transition. Up to this point, I thought she’d handled it but it turns out, she struggled quite a bit. The interview is fascinating. In one moment, she sounds like a typical teen but then she backs up what she said with well-worded and introspective thoughts.

There are many quotes to pull so it was hard to choose. You can read the whole thing here. Paris talks about a sexual assault she suffered at 14, several suicide attempts, self-harming and seeking treatment. She believes many things absolutely, like that she does not, in any way, question her parentage. She and her brothers also believe 100% that their father was completely innocent of all charges made against him. And Paris believes her father was murdered, just as he predicted he would be.

Paris has a lingering distaste for AEG Live, the promoters behind the planned This Is It tour – her family lost a wrongful-death suit against them, with the jury accepting AEG’s argument that Michael was responsible for his own death. “AEG Live does not treat their performers right,” she alleges. “They drain them dry and work them to death.” (A rep for AEG declined comment.) She describes seeing Justin Bieber on a recent tour and being “scared” for him. “He was tired, going through the motions. I looked at my ticket, saw AEG Live, and I thought back to how my dad was exhausted all the time but couldn’t sleep.”

Paris blames Dr. Conrad Murray – who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in her father’s death – for the dependency on the anesthetic drug propofol that led to it. She calls him “the ‘doctor,'” with satirical air quotes. But she has darker suspicions about her father’s death. “He would drop hints about people being out to get him,” she says. “And at some point he was like, ‘They’re gonna kill me one day.'”

Paris is convinced that her dad was, somehow, murdered. “Absolutely,” she says. “Because it’s obvious. All arrows point to that. It sounds like a total conspiracy theory and it sounds like bullsh-it, but all real fans and everybody in the family knows it. It was a setup. It was bullsh-t.”

But who would have wanted Michael Jackson dead? Paris pauses for several seconds, maybe considering a specific answer, but just says, “A lot of people.” Paris wants revenge, or at least justice. “Of course,” she says, eyes glowing. “I definitely do, but it’s a chess game. And I am trying to play the chess game the right way. And that’s all I can say about that right now.”

[From Rolling Stone]

The article mentions that Lisa Marie Presley also said on Oprah that Michael believed there were people out to get him. I can’t help but read some of his paranoia/conspiracy theory in her last answer. Paris said a few times that Michael spoke candidly to his children, “He did not bullsh-t us. You try to give kids the best childhood possible. But you also have to prepare them for the sh-tty world.” While I agree with that, the strength with which you press your point about a sh-tty world could skew a child’s perception.

I worry about the Jackson kids because I don’t know who is looking out for them. After reading this article, in which her older brother Prince is also quoted, I worry a little less about them. They seemed to be thinking for themselves and not just regurgitating something some handler told them. For instance, it sounds like Prince is not as convinced that Michael is his biological father, although, as he said, it doesn’t change anything if he wasn’t. Or when Paris talked about her fledgling modeling career. Citing self-esteem issues throughout her life, Paris said, “there’s a moment when I’m modeling where I forget about my self-esteem issues and focus on what the photographer’s telling me – and I feel pretty. And in that sense, it’s selfish.” At least she acknowledges that her modeling is selfish, which is more aware than most of the celebrity spawn models.

    Poor lost child.

    • MamaHoneyBadger says:

…who should slow down with the tattoos. She’s only 18? (!)

    • LoveIsBlynd says:

A parent who “educates” through paranoia and fear based conspiracies…this is just damaging to a child’s developing outlook. Sadly Michael was on a lot of drugs- the evidence is the multiple plastic surgeries and opiates that go hand in hand= paranoia. Sounds like everyone in her family and entourage wants to blame AIG.

  2. milla says:

why is she on the COVER?

    • nemera34 says:

Coming to say the same. There is not legit reason for her to be on the cover. I think this is exploiting her. It is just sad to me. Very sad.

      • milla says:

it is already worse than with WH’s daughter. this girl already made Chanel commercial…

she needs normal life, therapy and love, not cover of music magazine.

    • Mrs. Wellen-Melon says:

May she one day know what it is to achieve because of her own merit.

    • velourazure says:

I’ve subscribed to Rolling Stone (print) forever. It’s basically a joke at this point, the content is terrible. If the magazine gets any smaller it will be a pamphlet.

  3. Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Am so sad for these kids, Paris esp she seems so lost. She seems like an intelligent, self aware girl (who is a dead ringer for her mother Debbie) and I hope she finds peace and the family intervenes to help her.

As for the rapist; name him.

    • Alix says:

The Jackson family intervene? Don’t hold your breath.

      • Jesie says:

Ideally they’d all stay far, far away. Every member of that family is either an abuser or an enabler. Her rapist is likely one of her uncles.

    • QQ says:

Rumor is it was one of her relatives that eventually they went on to sort of separate them after her suicide attempt… This girl makes me sad 🙁

  4. Sayrah says:

    Sheesh.

  5. Esmom says:

I don’t know. Even if she is thinking for herself and not regurgitating a party line, she seems pretty lost and messed up. How could she not be? It’s too bad she’s not choosing to live outside the spotlight, which seems like it would probably be much healthier.

    • detritus says:

She’s going to have a lot to unpack to be healthy, because MJ was not and that’s a very hard thing to come to terms with.
He may have loved them deeply, but he was passing on concepts of the world that are just not true or healthy. And in the spotlight? I can’t imagine.

Paris deserves to feel beautiful and strong, not just when shes modelling. I wish her the best.

  6. paolanqar says:

I don’t understand why she is on the cover of Rolling Stones but she seems to be an ok child.
She will have to deal with whatever her family put her through for the rest of her life but so far she seems balanced and mature.

  7. Sam says:

Serious question. Why does it matter whether he was their biological father or not? To them he was their father. I’m trying to figure out why some folks are so hell bent on making the point that he isn’t their “real” dad and it makes me sick. Just because you’re adopted doesn’t mean those who adopted you are any less your parents.

    • RussianBlueCat says:

      Agree totally

    • Jesie says:

I never understood why people made such a thing of their parentage. Yes, Michael was clearly lying about some things (Debbie was obviously a surrogate and never his ‘real’ wife), but we could all see the truth and it’s not that wild of a situation. He was single and obviously had some issues with his own genes, so he used surrogates and donors. Big whoop.

I remember that Bashir interview where Michael got about as close as he ever did to explicitly saying Debbie and the surrogate for his younger boy were surrogates, and Bashir just kept acting exceptionally dense about the whole thing and making a huge deal of the fact Michael took his children home after they were born instead of leaving them with their ‘mothers’. Crap like that was so frustrating.

      • paolanqar says:

Bashir was probably the worst choice for that interview.
Every time I watch it I want to punch him in the face and I am not a violent person.

    • Bridget says:

I think it goes back to Jackson’s enduring legacy of weirdness. Does it mean that he wasn’t their father? No. But it’s pretty clear that Jackson simply married his surrogate and his children are from sperm donors.

    • Lucrezia says:

I don’t think it’s a biological/adopted thing per se. People think it might be a lie, so they pick at it. I bet 95% of them don’t actually care about whether he’s the biological father, they just care about whether MJ told the truth or not. It was all tied up with whether Debbie was really his wife (which was really not believable) so people started questioning everything he said.

    • OriginallyBlue says:

It shouldn’t matter as he was the one who raised them for better or worse. I do know some people are taking issue with her saying she’s a black woman and if Michael isn’t her biological father and her mother is white then it’s messy. There are white passing mixed race people (see Halsey and Pete Wentz) but since we don’t know if Michael is her biological father then it’s…but he raised her and if she believes they are blood then I can’t fault her for that. I am sure Michael adored these kids and did the best he could for them and that’s all that should matter.

    • Insomniac says:

Couldn’t agree more. It seems really cruel to these kids to keep picking at them on this point. He *was* their father, biologically or otherwise.

    • naughtycorner says:

I agree with you that your father is your father regardless whether bio or adopted. The difference here is that it is Paris who is insisting that she is Michael’s biological kid something that she apparently got from her father which isn’t necessary (and likely untrue )
MJ may have been proud of his blackness in terms of a rich culture and history etc but it is not far fetched to say that he apparently had an aversion to his black features. In that context even though I know some biracial kids can be fairly white presenting it seems he was very invested in convincing the world that he could biologically produce ” white ” children
By perpetuating what seems to be a lie it is Paris and her family that are making adoption/non traditional parenting seem shameful

PS. For the but but vitiligo crew. This disorder present universally as spotty patches of depigmentation it does not make you uniformly several shades lighter nor does it give you a paper thin nose , cleft chin or long straight hair

      • Goldie says:

I think some people have speculated that he bleached his skin in order to cover up his vitiligo. Meaning that he thought it looked better to have his skin be one tone, rather than have a bunch of light patches. I’m not saying I believe this. Just pointing out what I’ve heard. I agree that he clearly had some deep self-loathing issues, given all his surgeries etc.

      • Shelly says:

        My kid has it
one of the treatments if it gets too disfiguring is you remove the melanin from your skin totally
The downsides are you are very sun sensitive and more prone to skin cancer and burn easily.

      • Jeesie says:

Jackson did have the standard vitiligo patches of lightened skin. For years he wore dark make-up to cover up the white patches (not especially successfully, he looked very patchy in flash photography), and when he had more visible white skin than black he started wearing white make-up to cover the dark patches and hide the fact that his skin was semi-translucent.

      • naughtycorner says:

Not saying he didnt have vitiligo he probably did .It just that this is oft bandied about as a defense when anyone raises the obvious issues MJ had with his original features
Also its a chicken and egg situation , there are some instances when the vitiligo itself is caused by someone bleaching their skin in the first place

    • detritus says:

The older brother talks about this a little.
He says something along the lines that he has doubts MJ was his genetic father, but that it doesn’t matter because he was his real father.

    • Bridget says:

Also, one other answer to your question: money and secrecy. As Jackson’s children they are the beneficiaries of his estate, but also his fame. He kept his children literally hidden from public view, and there were so many questions about them because of that.

    • Miss M says:

I think because if I recall correctly HE made a big deal to say they were all his biological kids. But , someone correct me if I am wrong.

      • Jeesie says:

He did. But again, so what if he was lying?

I can think of 5 people I know in some capacity who fairly obviously aren’t the bio parents of their children. None of my business. Unless I thought they’d stolen a child (one of the few things no one accused MJ of), never in a million years would I even privately entertain the thought that I deserve answers, let alone actually bring the topic up.

  8. LAK says:

She is stunning as a blonde. Definitely her colour and she should keep it.

  9. PoliteTia says:

Star Shine you are not Miley. Please tread carefully. Forget the lime light and live the quiet life. The lime light destroyed your father

  10. Manjit says:

Why blame the promoters? The management and legal teams negotiate and agree the contracted number of shows, where is their responsibility in all this? Surely they know the artists better than a promotion company.

    • Geekychick says:

And “people are out to get me/they are gonna kill me someday” is typical for drug addicts.

  11. RussianBlueCat says:

I have to wonder if the “complete stranger” that assaulted Paris was a stranger. I get the feeling it was a close friend of the family or even a family member. Does not sound like she got much support in dealing with the assault from her family. The best thing she could do is distance herself from the Jackson family, too many secrets and turmoil for any young person growing up in that environment.

  12. Bridget says:

Oh honey. There is so much to unpack here, all I can say is that I hope she gets the help she needs.

  13. cheese says:

she has got such incredibly beautiful eyes. she seems grounded. hopefully she doesn’t mutate into a Miley

  14. Talie says:

Young people who inherit a lot of money can only go down…unless that inheritance is delayed. But she should not be on the cover of Rollingstone or trying to be a “model” or doing whatever other career she needs to feed the beast. Therapy and education should be the priority.

  15. Slowsnow says:

Oh boy. And yes, why give her the cover? She is clearly affected by a lot of stuff. Giving her this kind of platform while she is still so hurt and not had any closure does not seem right.
Poor girl. On one side we have baby fists against real journalism and on the other this tabloid sensationalism.

  16. Lucy says:

Her and her siblings have been through so much, it’s incredible. And those of you who may be dismissively thinking “poor little rich girl”, please don’t. Just do not. I hope she’s able to find her peace.

  17. Nina says:

Eh, cut her some slack. She’s 18. 18-year-olds typically speak in absolute, grandiose terms. She seems self-aware enough to be mindful of what the industry can do to a person, and her family doesn’t seem to be interested in exploiting her in the way they were with her father, uncles, and aunts. I think she’s just finding her way.

While I don’t think she deserves to be on the cover of the issues, I do really like the way it looks. Those colours are beautiful.

  18. Tig says:

She is very attractive, and very young. Agreed, the last thing she needs is to get on the “model of the week” carousel. Her upbringing was definitely out of the ordinary, and hope she has a good therapist in her life.

  19. Shelllley says:

They photoshopped her to an inhuman extent, didn’t they?
Her neck is the size of her wrist in the cover photo.
Completely unnecessary. She’s a beautiful young woman with a human sized neck.

  20. Shambles says:

In the photo that was used as the header/last photo down. Something is OFF with her face, no? Lips/ nose?

  21. Jess says:

Well I just slipped down a rabbit hole and went to her Instagram, then over to see what Prince is up to, then googled side by side pictures of all the kids with their supposed parents, what a mess! I’m convinced that Blanket is the only biological child of Michael, he really favors him a lot, but Paris and Prince are right, Michael is their dad no matter what.

    • YepIsaidit says:

I think the rumor was that Prince’ dad was michaels dermatologist. Not sure about Paris or blanket.

    • Bridget says:

I will never get over the fact that poor young man is called Blanket.

      • The dormouse says:

The origin of the “Blanket” name (IMHO): MJ did an interview holding the baby after the incident where he dangled him off the balcony for fans. He seemed quite out of it on something, and when he was asked what the baby’s name was he hesitated and looked down. The baby was wrapped in a blanket, and that was the answer MJ came up with.

“Blanket … we call him Blanket.”

How does it help these kids to overlook obvious lies?

      • serena says:

Chill, It’s just a nickname, his real name should be Prince Michael Jackson II if I’m not wrong.

      • Bridget says:

        BLANKET.

      • The dormouse says:

@serena – except I don’t believe “Blanket” was his nickname before that odd moment in the interview. After that, of course, everyone had to go along.

    • Snowflake says:

They are good looking kids. Hope they are OK mentally, that’s an unusual childhood.

  22. MellyMel says:

I can’t even imagine growing up the way they did and then being thrust into the spotlight because of their father’s death. Also in some of the pictures I saw yesterday that go along with this interview (or maybe another photo shoot I’m not sure), she is giving me major Madonna in the 80s vibes.

  23. trtgfc17 says:

You know what? She’s a celebrity’s child, and she will overtly express herself the year she becomes 18 regardless. Tats and talking deep about private stuff is expected (almost). Look at Miley. I think Paris’ family did all they could to keep her respectable before she’s an adult. I am glad she is not a Scientologist like some of those rich kids and hopefully doesn’t end up like Whitney and Bobby’s daughter. I say good for her. I AM surprised she has made such bold statements about her father’s death, but it shows how bold her nature is. I wish the best of luck to her and she should definitely start modeling. That is a beautiful face. MJ would be really proud of her. Also, I don’t recall celebrities and their children getting magazine covers for talent all the time. It is about what the public is interested in, and I’m sure Rolling Stone will sell many copies of that issue. I’m just happy it’s not a f*cking Kardashian on the cover!

  24. Pumpkin Pie says:

Any chance the police, child services or any relevant institution follows up on her statement regarding the rape?

    • detritus says:

nope, they barely do it when someone presses for it. They definitely don’t follow up on comments =(

      • Pumpkin Pie says:

Thank you for replying to my post.
I find it difficult to understand that authorities would not respond to her statement given, and I apologize for saying this, her profile. The voice of every human being suffering from sexual violence should be heard and legal follow up should be a must. A must.
I don’t walk Paris’s shoes, but I do have something to say: if shares this in a public medium, she has a responsibility. And I am sure that whatever she said in the interviewed must have being vetted, including by the editor and her family maybe.

  25. serena says:

She’s really beautiful, and interesting for that matter. She had a couple of rough years and I hope the future will be bright for her.

  26. Amelie says:

I worry about her. I’m sure Michael was a loving father but he was definitely bizarre, forcing the kids to hide their faces and being super secretive about their real parentage. As if mothers hand over their kids to the fathers, no questions asked (I remember that part in the Martin Bashir interview). The more secretive he got, the more people were demanding the truth.

And well, hopefully Paris will realize someday the only person at fault for her father’s death was Michael himself. He was the addict demanding to be given drugs to stay awake. His doctor was definitely criminally negligent but it was Michael’s own addiction that killed him. I suppose it’s too hard for her to admit that his addiction was stronger than his love for his own children.

And of course, being surrounded by the Jackson clan as soon as her father died. Her father secluded his children to keep them away and as soon as he was gone, the children were thrust in the spotlight at the memorial. I remember thinking the Jackson family exposing the kids directly like that could only be harmful in the long run when they had been hidden away for so long.

Glad she moved out of her grandmother’s. Hopefully she can heal and won’t go down the substance abuse route.

  27. Ever bloom says:

Her father was probably a paedophile but what he did with his own children was just as appalling, who covers their children’s faces by making them wear masks. That sort of bizarreness must have make them believe even now that the whole universe is out to murder them. Their perception of the world is very paranoid like their father.

Paris obviously deserves better, she should get required help. Be happy and do something productive rather than let herself get exploited by an industry, which according to her, took her father’s life.

  28. bellebottomblues says:

She looks nice here, but in the Chanel ad and many pap shots Ive seen, she looks utterly stoned.
Think there were many more deserving for the cover, but I guess that argument can be made for previous covers also.

  29. Char says:

I would have felt bad for her regardless, because no matter what anyone else thinks of MJ, to her & her siblings, he’s still their Dad that they obviously love. But I feel even worse for her & her brothers after being left to deal with the Jackson family without any buffer since MJ’s death. I was disgusted when she tried to commit suicide & the Jackson family told TMZ she was just “being dramatic.” I also quit following TMZ after that. She was a teenager who lost her father, have some decency.
That being said, I think the only way AEG killed MJ is that they agreed to work with someone who was obviously not mentally or physically well. & in another article I read, Paris said her father would cry to her at night about how people hated him & were out to get him. From everything else that has been said about him, it sounds like he had severe paranoia, & talking to your young children as if they are your best friend or therapist is bound to distort their views. It’s really amazing they are as “normal” as they are, given their circumstances.

  30. kNY says:

I’m not anti-tattoo, but holy crap. She looks like a piece of scrap paper.

Everyone, make this deal with your kids: have them draw the tattoo that they want, and put the drawing in a safe place and have them look at it in a year’s time. If they still want the that tattoo, then don’t argue. But chances are they will rethink it. I convinced a friend to do this a few years ago (for herself) and she’s currently relieved she didn’t get a tattoo of a sun around her belly button.

  31. Hiccup says:

I think it’s sad about the paranoia, her dad was an addict with an addicts brain and that was partly responsible for his fear of the world along with his own crazy upbringing. She’s still really young and seems intelligent, I hope she gets some good grounded people around her eventually, the Jackson family all seem disastrous in terms of support, groundedness or common sense. Maybe the kids have a shot. I hope so.

  32. Jasmine says:

In these pics, she’s not rail thin, and she looks on the taller side. Which tells me, she eats food. That alone makes me feel good about her decision making 😊

  33. Nymeria says:

Millions of people experience severe abuse at the hands of their caregivers. They are not then handed essentially a blank cheque and set free from the grinding drudgery that is a normal job. Want to spend the rest of your life in Fiji? She can. Want to attend expensive schooling without worrying about loans? She can. Want to buy a ridiculously huge house? She can. Want to never worry about health insurance? She never has and never will.

So why the sympathy? She has scars that millions of others have, yet she has resources they never will. I don’t feel sorry for wealthy people.

    • Hiccup says:

I think your point is very well put but that’s the exact reason why I feel sorry for these kids. Not having money can force you to mature and deal with emotional problems and is a pretty good way of staying on the straight and narrow. I’ve seen countless people who were Ok people with some problems basically fall off the deep end the moment they received a big inheritance or some such. It just makes it easier to fuck up yourself royally in a short space of time unfortunately, a “luxury” many of us don’t have. It’s not one I wish for either, I’m glad I didn’t have money when I was going through troubles from childhood, it would have made life harder not easier for me. Too many stupid options 😉

  34. MoreSalt says:

Holy moley – new lips, teeth, jaw and nose? Wow. She looks like a completely different human.

  35. aenflex says:

I feel badly for them. Can you imagine being raised by Michael Jackson? He wasn’t a well man. In fact, he was a very sick man. Whether or not he’s biological is irrelevant. They had to grow up with him. Terrible.

  36. Tanakasan says:

I read the entire interview. I really root for this girl. Prince said she has all of MK’s weaknesses and strengths. She seems incredibly kind, polite, empathetic, vulnerable, both painfully shy and charismatically regal, perceptive, sensitive, smart, wildly emotional, creative, loving, and full of demons. I hope she can focus all that is wonderful in herself and goes on to have a happy and fulfilling life.

  37. Bread and Circuses says:

She is super-pretty; she has the most spectacular eyes, and her skin is flawless. How unfair that she has had self-esteem issues with regard to her looks, because she’s always been lovely.
