Dakota Johnson: There are some toys out there which are ‘grimy & nasty’

As I was reading excerpts from this Glamour UK interview with Dakota Johnson, it occurred to me that the quotes could actually be sexy… if only they were being said by someone else entirely. Like, if this was Michael Fassbender or (God help me) Benedict Cumberbatch talking about the beauty of sex toys, I would be so into this interview. As it is, I’m just reading these quotes in Dakota’s voice in my head and everything is just so vanilla and unsexy. Dakota covers Glamour UK because she’s promoting Fifty Shades Darker, and she mostly sounds over the whole thing.

She’s ready to put FSOG in the rearview: “It’s not that it has put me off entirely, but I’m ready to do other stuff. And maybe they will be sexy [projects], or maybe they will be the complete opposite. But I do know that I’m ready to move on.”

Whether she has regrets about signing on to these films: “It comes in waves. But this project is not going to be my swan song. It has put my life on a path that I didn’t plan to go down, but I do feel proud of it. And the films have allowed me to do so many different projects and travel so much. In the end, Fifty Shades has plopped me in a world that I really wanted to be in.”

Whether her parents have seen the films: “They haven’t because it’s such a tricky thing. It’s too uncomfortable for them. It’s one thing if a film has one sex scene in it, but with this, a large part of the premise is the arc of their sexual relationship, and I think that’s a little inappropriate for my family to watch.”

She appreciates the world of sex toys now: “Oh some of that stuff is just so beautiful! When we first started on Fifty Shades, that wasn’t a world I was privy to at all, and I soon found out there are all these different tiers. There are some things out there that are really grimy and nasty, and then there are really beautiful, intricate and chic toys. Actually, whole aspects of the BDSM world are truly beautiful.”

I like the balance that she finds when describing a franchise that made her a huge star and yet the franchise is not really something to be proud of. She’s happy that FSOG “plopped” her into a world where she’s getting better scripts. But she’s not happy about the fact that she’s pretty much always going to be identified with this terrible character. As for the rest of it… I like that Dakota strives to be sex-positive. She isn’t out here, judging the BDSM community for their kinks.

it’s refreshing that she is openly grateful for the opportunities the franchise has given her. So many stars want to step on the work that made them famous, but she’s realistic about it. FWIW I think she is charming and low-key funny. I think she’d do well in a Marvel TV show or something.

Dakota turned out to be a lot cooler than I imagined her to be. I will always dislike FSOG, but I hope she stays around.

  3. Rose says:

How is she unsexy? She’s attractive and made the first move almost watchable.
She’s like normal person sexy, not movie start sexy if that makes sense?

    • Rocio says:

I totally agree. She’s sexy, pretty and seems like a nice person. She knows the films sucks and doesn’t go around badmouthing them but being graceful and grateful too.

  4. Ankhel says:

It’s amusing how little effort she and Dornan puts into convincing people they even like these movies…

After finishing The Fall last night all I can say is WHY JAMIE WHY????????? He’s such a good freaking actor. This franchise definitely made their names household but I don’t think I could ever watch him in a serious role again. All I would think about is the red room of pain and laters baby and let’s be real…I would stab the first guy who came at me like that lol.

    • Willow says:

In no way either one of these people are household names, nor could anyone who is not obessessed with crappy franchise or gossip could pick them out of a lineup. Nor are they A-list.

      • Dani says:

I would have never ever known who she or he were if it weren’t for 50 shades. It was the big break for both of them. Definitely not A list but for sure recognizable.

I guess I am one of the few that truly like the fsog and the actors it’s truly just entertainment you know this if you read the books it’s just escape from everyday life. I think Dakota and Jamie have did a great job bringing anaistia & Christian alive .
