Emma Stone in Alexander McQueen at the SAGs: stunning or meh?

The 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Arrivals in LA

Emma Stone surprised me at the SAG Awards last night. It’s not that I hate Emma’s style, or I think she’s completely hopeless sartorially. I just haven’t been digging her fashion choices the past few years, and I think she’s goes for cute/twee when she should be going for clean, mature and sophisticated. So I was surprised that she chose this rather sexy Alexander McQueen gown with the half-lingerie look. I would have hated this if the entire dress was lingerie, and I would have hated it if the whole dress was embroidered velvet. But mix the two together and… I think I like this? Is that weird? It’s just such a surprising choice for her. Anyway, obviously Emma won the SAG for Best Actress… which means that Natalie Portman probably has little-to-no chance. Yay? Even though Emma was the worst part of La La Land, if it means Portman doesn’t get another Oscar, I think I’m Team Emma.

Kerry Washington wore Roberto Cavalli. I don’t hate or love this. It’s flattering and it’s okay. Kerry elevates a mediocre dress with her superb styling though – hair, makeup, jewelry, everything looks incredible. She’s just glowing.

Emily Blunt also wore Roberto Cavalli. This was a lot cuter in motion, on the carpet. You could see the detailing and it was pretty. But in photos, it doesn’t look that great. Everything looks like it’s the same color – the nude shade is too fleshy, and her hair is literally blending into the dress.

I disliked La La Land, but I LOVE Emma, so I’m happy she got the award. The dress is ugly though.

Kerry looks awful. Like a game show hostess. Emily looks bad too. Has there ever been a Cavalli dress that wasn’t tacky?

    • Megan says:

Kerry’s dress looks like something Kim Kardashian would wear. Kerry deserves better.

      • teacakes says:

The movie awards trail is the one red carpet without a Kardashian infestation, that’s one good thing about it.

      • PGrant's Girl says:

@Megan, omg now that I see Kim K in that dress, I can’t unsee it! Even Kerry’s center part is KK-like. I think it’d be better without the sleeves.

      • HappyMom says:

I was coming on here to say the same thing: from the straight hair to the blank look. Kerry Washington is fierce-why oh why did she do this???

    • kennedy says:

I don’t the whole “Emma was the worst part of La La Land” criticism. She was VERY good and she is nearly in every scene. So if you love the movie, you kind have to love her performance. Plus, I think she has such great, natural chemistry with Gosling. I can’t imagine another version of the movie especially Emma Watson and Miles Teller…. barf.

I’m glad she’s winning everything! I love her and she seems like a genuinely kind person.

  2. detritus says:

Emily looks like a very expensive and tasty wedding cake.

Kerri is beautiful and stunning as always, her skin is so glowing but that is icecapades go to a wedding dress.
Her fashion never does her justice.

Emma’s corset looks like it’s making her organs hurt.

    • Rachel says:

Emma’s dress was very Frederick’s of Hollywood. In the 90’s.

And her speech was horrible. I was really just hoping for someone other than Natalie Portman to win, but when Emma started her whole mess of a speech (gah – even Ryan was embarrassed for her!), I would have preferred a Portman win. I wasn’t buying the whole “oh you like me, you really like me” act.

  3. CornyBlue says:

I feel like Emily Blunt’s dress would have looked better on someone with a darker skin tone.. where the detailings would have been a bit more apparent.

  4. Cee says:

I loved La La Land and the trailer does not do it justice. I thought it was going to be singing instead of talking and I was glad that was not the case. I also liked the ending. Even in La La Land not everything ends up being the way it should be.

However I do think the movie stands on Emma’s and Ryan’s chemistry. Different casting would have made it fall flat on its’ face. I loved the music and cinematography but I’m holding out until Hidden Figures is released.

  5. Shambles says:

I don’t think Emma was theeeee worst part of la la land, but Ryan was much better. Her audition song was amazing though. I like the dress.

    Bonus John Krasikski!!! Yum.

    • Norman Bates' Mother says:

I also don’t agree Emma was the worst thing in La La Land (I loved the movie btw), but there was a huge gap between her singing skills and Ryan’s. He’s not the best singer ever, but he’s pretty decent and her voice is weak. But her character wasn’t supposed to be the musically gifted one and in my opinion, she was really good in the non-musical, acting parts – far better than Portman in Jackie.

  6. Div says:

I love Emma but ugh on her probably winning the Oscar (also ugh on her dress). She’s attended every event, even in places like Colorado and Mill Valley, and is hustling for this Oscar hardcore. She gave a good performance in a decent film, but it was “easy” compared to the roles of Amy Adams, Isabelle Huppert, Taraji P. Henson, and yes, even Natalie Portman. It was a lightweight romantic musical drama where she just had to appear stressed a few times and she also sang with her weak voice.

Her winning just shows the annoying part of the awards circuit…where they often reward the likeable, young ingenues who hustle even if they are better performances. The fact that she’ll probably win over Isabelle Huppert, who is considering one of the greatest French actresses of all times, is absurd.

    • Jeesie says:

I’m not sure what’s wrong with a light performance winning? Good acting isn’t about crying and screaming and playing a character who goes through hell. Some of the greatest acting performances of all time are fun and joyful and whimsical.

      • Meryl says:

For me, it wasn’t a light performance, but more along the lines of she didn’t have much to do. Especially when compared to the other nominees.

I’m also incapable of taking Emma Stone seriously. She never disappears into the character, it’s always me watching Emma Stone try to act. And lots of times I think she falls back on comedy, even in a more serious scene, because her acting chops aren’t up to snuff. She’s continuously the weakest part of an ensemble.

It also strikes me as odd that she gets virtually no criticism when it comes to some of the project choices. I’m looking at you, Aloha and Woody Allen. People boycott actors for less, but she pretty much passed over any side eye because she’s a charming, young, wide eyed mediocre white girl. Would have loved to see Viola Davis in the Best Actress category. We would be looking at a completely different award race.

      • Sara says:

My main issue was not the light-hearted nature of the movie which was charming, but how weak the performances were. I think both Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are good actors but they have terribly weak voices (especially Ryan to be fair) and even weaker dancing skills. If you’re going to do an hommage to MGM and Gene Kelly (which this clearly was), please cast at least good dancers. Channing Tatum would have been a better choice.

      • teacakes says:

I have to agree. I forget which actor it was that said fake laughter was more difficult for them to do than fake distress, but that nailed why comedy deserves recognition too.

    • JulP says:

Agree with all of this. That’s why I hate the Oscars. It’s rarely about who gave the best performance; usually the person who campaigns the hardest wins (like Emma this year, or Eddy Redmayne a few years ago. Still bitter he stole Michael Keaton’s Oscar!). And I think the issue with Emma’s performance is not necessarily that it was “light,” but that there are probably hundreds of other actresses, both aspiring and established, who could have done a much better job (same goes for Ryan). And by that, I mean actresses who could be “charming” (which is really all her role required) while also singing and dancing well. Emma’s singing and dancing were downright embarrassing in my opinion. Her winning an Oscar for this role just underscores the fact that white mediocrity will continue to be celebrated, while superior actresses like Viola have to move to the supporting category in order to win.

  7. paolanqar says:

Is it me or Emily Blunt looks pregnant?
I love Emma, I hope she will get the Oscar since Amy Adams is not there to compete.

    • Merry says:

Didnt Emily just have a baby? Thats probably the old baby weight you are seeing.

      • paolanqar says:

She had a baby a few months ago and her stomach was really flat lately. Now it looks bumpy again.. so i was wondering if maybe she’s pregnant again

      • Shijel says:

Or maybe it’s just an unflattering dress, post-pregnancy body and less shapewear. I like it. Her body looks good.

    • HappyMom says:

Just had a baby. And she is very thin. I think it’s a badly shaped dress.

  8. Merry says:

Hahahahaha! Wtf is Emily wearing? Its like she dug up an old white night slip from the dumpster all covered in yellow dumpster sludge. As for Emma, her dress looks like a loving friend tried to hide it in the waste disposal unit but Emma snatched it before it could shred everything. Bot these women need to get more honest friends.

  9. ell says:

emily’s dress flattens her boobs. roberto cavalli makes the ugliest dresses.

  10. smcollins says:

I have mixed feelings about Emma’s dress. I honestly can’t decide if I like it or not. Her hair & makeup look great, though. I haven’t seen La La Land yet, but I’ll watch anything with her and/or Ryan in it so I definitely will. I think Kerry’s dress is a miss for her, but she’s so freakin’ beautiful it really doesn’t matter. And while Emily’s dress is a little too flesh toned I don’t hate it. I don’t love it either, but she does look very pretty. And her & John are just the cutest. They seem very happy, and I’m happy for them!

  11. Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Not feeling the dress. For me, red carpet McQueen will never beat Margot Robbie’s Unicorn dress, LOVED that dress so much.

  12. Bex says:

I don’t believe that Emma was the worst part of La La Land at all (that would be the screenplay). IMO her character was very slight and she gave more to it than was on the page. I wouldn’t give her the award over some of the other nominees, but she was very good. I think I’d love her dress without the weird peel away lingerie part.

  13. Rocio says:

I hated Emma’s drees. It looks like a sleeve fell off and we are seeing her underwear. Not a good choice.

  14. dorothy says:

she looks like she just got assaulted not the look for me

  15. I Choose Me says:

I dislike Emma’s dress with a passion. Looks like a craft project went awry. Emily’s dress is also hideous (on her) because it makes her look jaundiced. Kerry’s dress is ok.

  16. serena says:

Nope, I think Emma’s outfit is pretty awful. I still don’t understand how such a beautiful woman can dress so badly.

  17. SM says:

Emily looks like rachel’s cousin transported from an episode of friends. Jen Aniston would be flatered

  18. Lucy2 says:

I don’t like Emmas dress, it looks like it’s half falling off. Kerry’s is good for her, but I still don’t like it. Emily’s is very unflattering.

I enjoyed Emmas movie and I thought she was good in it, but I don’t feel that it was an Oscar-winning roll or performance.
