Sarah Jessica Parker has adultery problems (SATC sequel spoilers)

Sarah Jessica Parker is having adultery problems. And no, it’s not totally about those rumors from several months ago about Matthew Broderick and that random 25-year-old redhead. It seems that the Sex and the City writers are working feverishly on plotlines for the SATC sequel (of which Chris “Mr. Big” Noth is returning) and one of the ideas pitched was Mr. Big cheating on Carrie. Beyond the simple fact that an Big-adultery plotline would be banal, SJP has issues with the writers’ idea. Because of all of the rumors about her husband Matthew, SJP doesn’t her art to imitate life. According to a source close to the production, “That subplot hit way too close to home for Sarah…[SJP] never discusses the situation with Matthew, and she certainly doesn’t want to revisit it in her acting career.” Hello, if that’s the case, SJP has bigger problems than a wonky plotline.

Sarah Jessica Parker has flexed her creative muscles on the film sequel to the “Sex and the City” movie – by nixing an adultery story line!

After husband Matthew Broderick was reportedly snared in a cheating scandal last summer, the Emmy-winning beauty decided art would not imitate life on the big screen, sources say.

“Sarah quickly eighty-sixed a story line that had her on-screen husband Big cheating,” an insider told the Enquirer. “When she recently read one proposed plot outline, she vetoed it.”

The hotly anticipated sequel to the 2008 film based on the HBO series begins filming in the fall and will hit theaters in May 2010. But writers and producers are already huddling to hash out plot points, supervised by Sarah.

“The first movie ended with Carrie and Big – Sarah and Chris Noth’s characters – happily married but producers wanted to add tension and conflict to the sequel,” the source said.

“Their challenge is to give audiences something juicy to draw them in, and one of the first ideas that surfaced was Carrie in crisis over cheating Big.” But Sarah, 44, definitely had other ideas.

Her 12-year marriage to Broderick, 47, hit the headlines when it was reported that he carried on a secret affair with a 25-year-old redhead. The couple stuck together and they’re now expecting twin daughters, via a surrogate.

“I think that subplot hit way too close to home for Sarah,” the source added.

“And since she’s not only the film’s major star and one of its producers, she immediately dismissed the idea.

“She never discusses the situation with Matthew, and she certainly doesn’t want to revisit it in her acting career.”

Meh to all of that. I’m going to give SJP the benefit of the doubt and say that she nixed the adultery plotline because it’s really stupid, not because Matthew was looking for a little strange. Not to spoil the first SATC movie (2008 SPOILERS), but the Miranda-Steve adultery plotline nearly killed me. That, and Carrie’s consistent narcissism and immaturity ruined the film for me, and if another adultery plot is all the writers can come up with, I won’t be seeing the second film.

As far as SJP and the state of her marriage… well, she and Matthew are expecting twin girls via surrogate, so let’s hope they’re more solid than they look. Here’s hoping!

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick are shown on 4/26/09 and 4/27/09. Sarah is also shown with their son, James, on 5/1/09. Credit: WENN.com

Why doesn’t Mr. Big go broke? That would be fresh and timely.

  2. Lem says:

that poor little boys hair is out of control

SJP is by far my least favorite part of SATC. I’m not suggestiong plots but Carrie growing up a bit would be a good thing

  3. Wench. says:

Big cheating would just be waaaaaaaay too obvious.

    Bring back Aidan!

  4. alecto says:

Bandaid babies will fix any marriage.

  5. katie says:

    ugh, enough Carrie/Big relationship drama.

  6. HUH says:

what a cute pic of SJP and her daughter.

    (yes, that was sarcastic.)

  7. yuzuriha says:

i really don’t care if she is a “fashionista”. I don’t know what the fuzz is about her cos she really isn’t the most beautiful lady out there. And honestly the dress she’s wearing with the red carnation…uff!

  8. sickofit says:

yap. i was thinkin this as well when readin about the seguel. mr.big cheatin would be stupid cause it just would not fit. seein him being broke would be more of it. and samantha would be broke as well. that sounds fun.

  9. Codzilla says:

    HUH: ROFL!

  10. vale says:

If ANYTHING make Carrie cheat on Big. Make it slightly less predictable, although why does anyone have to cheat to begin with? We’ve seen that plotline already. Also because who wants to watch an hour of an already self-important Carrie turn herself into a victim and cry and whine and go apes–t on big and…. wait.. wasn’t that the plot to SATC 1??

I hope the writers are reading this: people don’t have that much money to spend to go to the movies so MAKE IT WORTH THEIR WHILE and use your imagination.

  11. becca says:

Yeah, seriously. How about the writers let the economic crisis come to Carrie’s doorstep in the form of Big losing his job. He’s hunting for months, and in the meantime Carrie cheats on him with a tycoon of sorts so she can keep on buying her minollos and jimmy choos. That way, the audience can at least see her real colors show.

  12. PJ says:

Kaiser, I totally agree. The adultery plotline in the SATC movie was very contrived.

But the writers do have to come up with some sort of conflict between Carrie and Big for the sequel. Maybe they’ll have a fight about kids, or Mr. Big will want to move back to Napa, or maybe he’ll lose his money in the stock market crash.

  13. Ally says:

Yes, Big losing his penthouse-paying job and both of them having to make the relationship work on a budget would be awesome. Let’s see if they can still stand each other without all the “stuff”. I for one would love to see Carrie regain her brain cells and lose her moronic love of labels.

SJP is always hectoring about a budget-conscious lifestyle in her interviews. Let’s see her put the plotline where her money is.

For me the appeal of SATC was the great comic writing and acting, and the fact that the women had such active lives with a new outing every day and night. The clothes and designer excess were a side thing that eventually became distracting. Get away from throwing money in the audience’s face and back to the good stuff!

  14. lola lola says:

OMG That dress! What the heck? It’s horrible! Is she trying to look dumpy? Is it a costume or something? Please! Someone explain it away! And SJP: Burn that thing!

  15. ! says:

“That, and Carrie’s consistent narcissism and immaturity ruined the film for me”

I couldn’t agree more. Suddenly our self deprecating, spunky but down on her luck girl was just a snob, obsessed with a closet and a Vogue spread and having the focus on her her her. That scene with her pestering Big and acting like a child was just….ugh. I’ve never liked that “their shit don’t stink” attitude they’ve often taken on with many of the characters.

A cheating plotline would have elicited a major groan from just about every SATC fan, me thinks. One more commitment issue from Big would ruin everything. He’s cheated, he’s opened up only to close up again, he’s been afraid to get married again blah blah blah blah. Let’s see him act like a real man and a real adult for once.

  16. Ana says:

No cheating! They’re married and supposed to live happily ever after! The Steve/Miranda thing almos killed me too. I was so disappointed in Steve and really haven’t looked at him the same since.

  17. jayem says:

Yeah, they already did that with Miranda and Steve anyway. And I’m tired of them trying to make Big such a cad. The storyline in the movie was ridiculous. Actually, if anyone cheated, it would probably be Carrie!! (I should read the rest of the comments before I post…)

I think you guys have a good idea with him losing his money. But I do have to say the crux of the fun of the series is that they are who they are and shop all the time. It would be a buzzkill.

And I completely agree with you guys about Carrie’s behavior in SATC 1. It ruined the movie for me. Our HBO heroine would have NEVER acted that way. Nor would she have painted her apartment blue. But that’s another rant.

  18. connie says:

hasn’t carrie always been self involved? everytime someone else has a problem she brings it back to her dilema. ever since i noticed this it’s the only thing i can concentrate on and as such she became my least favorite character. in hindsight, i always try to make sure i don’t “pull a carrie” in talking with friends

  19. Alison says:

The world definitly doesn’t need another SATC movie. The well is dry. It’s going to be awful no matter what.

  20. enchantress says:

SJP – do something with your hair, girlfriend! That frizzy mousy look flatters no one, including you 🙁

  21. dew says:

She looks dreadful! That dress looks like a 2nd hand prom dress worn originally by the daughter of a dirt farmer. And middle-aged women should not wear young hairstyles — go for something more sleek, or a loose updo, PLEASE! And shoveling on the makeup doesn’t fool anyone either.

  22. lkjglkj says:

i’d rather SHE had an affair in the movie. and i agree with another commenter- bring back Aiden!!!

  23. DiMi says:

They already did the adultery theme with Miranda in the first movie.

They’re just going to have to make her have a baby.
