Jessa Duggar named her second son Henry Wilberforce Seewald

The 59th Annual Grammy Awards arrivals

Jessa Duggar-Seewald gave birth last week. I didn’t write about it mostly because there was a ton of other crap going on, and because I was waiting to hear the name. Jessa and Ben welcomed their first child back in 2015, and they named that poor baby Spurgeon. Which… my God, that name still horrifies me a little bit. I think it’s because I’m obsessed with the nicknames little kids are given, and I literally can’t think of anything decent for “Spurgeon.” I mean, do they call him SPUR? Ugh. Anyway, Jessa and Ben finally announced the name for their second child. I honestly don’t hate it.

Baby Seewald has a name! Jessa (Duggar) Seewald and her husband Ben announced Monday that they will be calling their week-old second son Henry Wilberforce. The newest addition to the family is named after William Wilberforce, a politician and philanthropist who was instrumental in putting an end to the slave trade.

The couple decided on Henry mainly because Jessa “really like it…We just thought it was cute, but also there was another great man of God name Matthew Henry who lived before Wilberforce and he wrote a lot of great commentaries,” Ben said in the video.

The Counting On stars exclusively announced the birth of her second baby boy to PEOPLE on Feb. 6, revealing that he was born at 4:26 a.m., weighing 8 lbs. and 11 oz. and measuring 21¾ in. long.

“Mom and baby are both doing well,” said the happy couple. “We are so thankful to God for this precious new gift of life and are excited to be a family of four!”

Jessa, 24, and Ben, 21, who have been married since November 2014, are also the proud parents to their first son, Spurgeon, 15 months. On Wednesday, the couple shared the first photo of the new family of four along with a short video clip of baby Seewald.

“We are so excited to introduce our little baby boy to the world,” Jessa said. “I think it’s really awesome that we have two little boys so close together in age. I know they’re going to be best friends and love growing up and doing everything together, so I’m looking forward to seeing that. I know Ben’s probably going to have them out in the backyard playing football in the next couple of years!”

I’m also a little bit grateful that Jessa had another boy. While it’s pretty awful to be a guy or a girl in that family, the guys have it much better off. Bringing up a daughter in that cult must be a terrifying ordeal. Anyway, as for the name… Henry is a good name. Wilberforce is… well, the kid’s going to be grateful that it’s just his middle name.

the names are the least of the kids problems anyway.

  2. Alix says:

But they couldn’t have flipped “Spurgeon Elliot” around to make it easier for the kid? Poor boy. Henry’s the lucky one…

  3. Taiss says:

Willberforce & spurgeon? Lmaooo poor babies.

“I think it’s really awesome that we have two little boys so close together in age. I know they’re going to be best friends and love growing up and doing every thing together”. Girl bye, at this all your kids will be best friends.

    • Daisy says:

Don’t they hit kids until they’re smiley and obedient all the time? So maybe they will act like jest friends.

  4. Elizabeth says:

    Wilberforce? Poor thing.

I hope all the babies in this generation will be boys, so the moms have to do all the raising themselves, instead of passing them off to big sisters the minute they’re weaned.

    • Gabriela says:

It’s looking that way for most of the new generation, since Jill’s also having a second boy. The one that’s already going to be passing on his newer spawn, because he’s most likely not stopping at 4 kids, to the women in the family is Josh, now that oldest child Mackenzie (or however the name is spelled) is 7, so give it a year or two before she gets to be the surrogate mom for her siblings.

  5. Chelly says:

I wish for the time when the name Duggar meant nothing to anyone. This family simply annoys me

  6. Crox says:

Wait, the boy’s name doesn’t start with S like his older brother’s name?

Isn’t that against their religion or something?

  7. Chaine says:

Sooooo sick of hearing about these grifters and their endless spawning. “religious nut job with nothing to offer the world except her uterus reproduces yet again”–Stop covering them.

    • Crox says:

I think the first rule of “stories I want to read about” is to not click and definitely not comment on those you don’t want to see. 😉 More traffic – more coverage.

    • Elina says:

Ummmmm, why are we still talking about these people?

  8. Wren33 says:

I know I am being sexist here, but I can’t believe Ben is only 21 and already has two kids. I guess he always has the option of freaking out and going on a prostitute bing and being forgiven though.

    • Mols says:

I was going to say the same thing! I don’t comment here often, but seriously I was such a total idiot at 21 (and 24, which is how old Jessa is?)–I cannot imagine being saddled with all those babies and that level of responsibility. 21 seems so, so young.

    • lunchcoma says:

I looked at that picture and thought how young they both looked. Apparently the daughters are supposed to be ambassadors for their lifestyle because they’re easier to relate to than Michelle, but they just look like they’re a little overwhelmed. I can’t imagine the fact that Ben doesn’t have any sort of steady career helps.

  9. minx says:

I don’t think Ben has a job. Last I heard he did odd jobs for his father-in-law. So, no wonder they are still grifting.

  10. lizzie says:

these are names that people who have never interacted with the outside world think are “cool” and “unique”

  11. DiamondGirl says:

That older kid has total Duggar-face : (

  12. Harryg says:

Duggars go away you creep me out.

  13. Kate says:

Wonderful! Another baby to subject to the blanket training method! Yay

  14. Anastasia says:

Dammit, I love the name Henry.

That guy has dead eyes in both pictures. He’s not happy–BET.

  15. Dusti says:

I love Jessa & Ben’s babies names there names are hardly heard.

  16. Bethany says:

I believe that Ben goes to college but not sure where or what his major is. The surprising thing to me is the fact that Jessa seems genuinely happy in her marriage to Ben. She was not the most demonstrative woman in the world when they were courting but now she looks content and well-adjusted. As for the names – I like the name Henry but that middle name is a mouth full to say the least.

    • polonoscopy says:

She’s 24, has two kids under two, her husband is 21, and she’ going to be pregnant again in 6 months.

      She’s not happy.

  17. Disco Dancer says:

Stop Breeding! And this duggar girl looks like a glassy eyed loony toon.

  18. supposedtobeworking says:

The Wilberforce thing is much more icky than being an abolitionist. There is a group called the Wilberforce Project that is very active in protesting abortion and euthanasia rights in Canada. I am not sure if it exists in the states, but I would imagine it is. It sounds nice to name a child after Wilberforce, but I imagine this is the real inspiration – to keep them connected to the fundamentalist community.
