Nicki Minaj feels like she’s ‘winning’ the Remy Ma beef by staying silent

Paris Fashion Week - Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2017 - Rick Owens Show

Here are some additional photos of Nicki Minaj at Paris Fashion Week. Nicki was in Paris all of last week, which is possibly one explanation for why Minaj didn’t seem to “react” to Remy Ma. On Oscar weekend (two weekends ago), Remy Ma destroyed Nicki Minaj with one of the greatest diss-tracks of the past decade, “shETHER.” Remy Ma came for Minaj’s wig and that wig was snatched completely. Minaj spent all of PFW looking shook. Since then, Remy has been releasing additional music and basically taking a victory lap. Everyone’s been asking themselves, “Is Minaj still the baddest bitch – which she claims she is – if she can’t even respond properly to Remy Ma?” Well, as it turns out, Minaj doesn’t want to play Remy’s game. Hm.

Nicki Minaj has no immediate plan to respond to Remy Ma’s vicious diss tracks, in which Remy calls Nicki every name in the book, including a cheater, a tramp and a has-been. Our sources say Nicki feels Remy’s accusations are being exposed as lies by various people, including Lil Wayne, Trey Songz, Ebro and Safaree. There’s a lot of chatter that Nicki will fall off if she doesn’t respond, but she doesn’t buy it.

We’re told Nicki is not hiding … quite the opposite. She’s in the middle of high-profile appearances at Paris Fashion Week. She’s also featured on 2 tracks that were just released from Future and Gucci Mane. She also just released a new app.

As you know, Remy blasted Nicki, calling her a ho, a bitch, a cokehead, and a disloyal hoochie with bad butt implants. Remy also says Nicki slept her way to the top.

As for the long-term, Nicki isn’t ruling out a counterblast, but she feels right now she’s winning by silence.

[From TMZ]

You know what I think? I’m being completely serious here: I think this is a sign that Minaj has “gone Hollywood” to a certain extent. This isn’t so much about Minaj being shook (although, let’s face it, she’s shook). It’s about Minaj dealing with Remy Ma like a crisis-management issue, which is what – I’ll say it! – a white artist would do. Which is a mistake for Minaj’s brand, I believe. Minaj’s brand has evolved over the years, and she’s been a mainstream artist for a while now. Staying silent and taking the high road seems to be part of her effort to present herself as a mainstream, radio-friendly artist who won’t engage with petty beefs. But consider this… Drake is also a mainstream artist and when Minaj’s ex Meek Mill started that stupid beef with Drake, Drake responded and dealt with it swiftly and Drake was able to maintain his mainstream credentials and add some street cred. Minaj has basically lost credibility as a Bad Bitch now, because she’s making the choice to lean into mainstream sensibilities.

  1. Jennet says:

As a die hard Nicki fan, who loves her rhymes and flow, enjoys her music, I have to say that I’m unimpressed with her not responding. It leads me to believe she can’t. NAS responding to Jayz in “Ether” really cemented him as a hip hop legend.

Hip hop beef is part of the “culture”. When Drake responded, I really think “Back to Back” was one of his best pieces of work. So dope. Remy Ma has proven she has the credibility-“street cred” if you will.

Part of Nicki’s image is that she’s a bad bitch. Listen to “Four Door Aventador”. I agree, she is going mainstream pop and the ghost writing claims make me wonder now.I’m not entirely convinced she even writes her own rhymes.

In “Black Barbie” she was going on and on about being the best female rapper. It was a diss to Remy yet when Remy calls her out, she “takes the high road”. Nah, get back in the studio girl and finish what you started!

    • Missy says:

Yes yes yes. I’m so disappointed that Nicki hasn’t responded – especially when she’s done so in the past. We all know that she’s not above petty beefs. I mean, she’ll go after Miley Cyrus but not Remy? What’s your deal, Nicki?

    • QQ says:

*stands clapping in Ovation* this needs to be responded to in the Stud, if you are not you’re being washed, and yes she is Using “going Hollywood” as some sort of bs exit strategy, No Bueno, Remy ma got that fair and square

    • Celest says:

Fair enough but you must know that theres a difference between how hiphopheads like yourselves perceive this and how the mainstream do. The people who turned Nicki into a super star dont care who writes her rhymes. They buy because she has a unique flow, engaging personality, brightly coloured music videos and fun aesthetics. Most of her fans dont even know that she is describing sex acts half the time, they just like how she creates these different characters and sounds completely unlike any other rapper. Thats it. Nicki clearly values this audience over the hiphop purists.

Personally, I think its a wise business choice. Most hiphopheads never like her in the first place anyway. They were even pissed that she named the Pink Print, a popish sounding album after Jays iconic Blue Print. Even with the best writers writing her Remy comeback, the purists were always going to be pissed at her. I mean Charlamagne still clowns Drake even after the Meek Mill thing. In this context, best to brush it off and focus on being the pop star who raps.

      • LilliLilian says:

Well…..This was a damn good comment and an extra wide eye-opener to why Nicki was able to become an A-list “rapper,” despite not being anything the rap fanbase would desire. That whole colorful character routine is definitely what won her pop-fame. Heck, I purposely wanted to be on the bandwagon of rap fans who disowned her for being so comical and slutty, but those damn colorful clown videos had me like “she’s not so bad, it’s entertaining.” Then I got disowned! But, yep, if she keeps giving a colorful character show to the pop audience she probably (sadly) can keep her “rap” career going another 1.5 years.

      • artistsnow says:

        WOW! thank you Ladies!!

Very nice to read some detailed, deep and wise comments.
Rap is music but it is also a lifestyle. Complicated.

    • Ghost&Tommy says:

@Jennet: I like that you said that and that you have sense enough to understand that there’s a difference in liking Nicki and her “music” n knowing that she really isn’t about that “rap queen” life with her nonresponse to Remy.
I’ve seen a lot of Nicki fans basically trashing Remy because she slaughtered Nicki in SHETHER n I’m like its okay to like someone but when they do or say something stupid, it’s cool to call them out n that doesn’t mean you like them any less.
You’re one of the few Nicki fans that I’ve seen make any sense as far as this Remy vs Nicki thing.

    • Amanda DG says:

I still listen to Back to Back… Drake played that beautifully. “Trigger fingers turn to Twitter fingers” gets me every time.

  2. AreYouForReal? says:

Cut Nicki some slack – she needs time to hire a ghost-writer to pen the diss track for her. :-/

    • Tiffany27 says:

This honestly is why I assumed she had yet to release the clapback.

    • Mike says:

I was going to say something similar but I thought it wold come off as sexist

    • Peeking in says:

I was all about Nicki responding until Remy released a second track, which was so weak, then, to top it off with yesterday’s interview? Nah, Nicki will be fine.

      • Nicole says:

I’m with you. At first I thought it was lame she hadn’t responded until Remy buried herself. So she is doing the right thing at this point

  3. Clare says:

I dunno – Minaj is making her $$ from 13 year olds who buy her music – not from the ‘rap game’ (sorry I am lame and don’t know the appropriate terminology ) . Her brand is pink lolipops and thigh highs and rolling on beds with Ariana Grance. Going to war with remy Ma may help her credibility on ‘the street’ but come on – that’s not what pays her bills.

Besides, feeding the fire just gives Remy Ma more mainstream notoriety. Why would Nikki feed that fire?

  4. Babs says:

There’s no high road when you started it all.
She was murdered and she can’t do nothing about it. She should have stayed all the way silent. This PR response is whack.
Since she’s talking I’d like her to adress her brother’s wrongdoing and why she is paying for his defense (his defense which is basically blaming the twelve years old victim).

    • Nyawira says:

Nicki didn’t “start” anything. She postures in her music exactly as every other rnb, pop, hiphop artist. Everybody from Rihanna to Miley refers to themself as the baddest and the queen. The only line that even vaguely implies that she was addressing Remy was the line where she says she waited two years and Remuneration has been out of prison for about two years. None of the alleged subliminals are about reducing Remy using her body or her sex life. But if you admit Nicki took subliminal shots then you must admit Remys too. Plus you must go back to the era before Remy went to prison because they were at it long before now.

Remy is just a goon. She raps with the deep voice of a goon, the lyrics of a goon and the mentality of a goon. She complains about getting a “harsh” sentence because she is a woman. She admits to prison contraband and fighting and even brags about not being caught. The genre didn’t always belong to the gangsters, they stole it. I wish Nicki was more empowered in her sexual lyrics but I rather her than Remy The Goon.

      • Tommy Wiseau says:

Nicki started it, Remy responded, Nicki was murdered & buried, and here we are.

      • Celest says:

I love the username. “Your tearing me apart, Liiiiisa” lol

But the OP is right. Nicki didnt start. Every rapper says they are the greatest and for everytime that Nicki has said that, Remy Ma has said it twice over. When Remy was asked about it last year, she said she wasnt addressing Nicki. She should have given Nicki the same benefit of the doubt.

In any case, Remy Mas track was misogynistic claptrap. I’m not here for that nonsense. She loses ALL points for lacking the imagination it takes to diss a woman without spreading rumors about who she slept with. So no I dont think she “murdered” Nicki. I think she murdered all women in a male dominated profession and taught impressionable girls that you “bury” other women by publicly shaming their rumored sex life.

  5. jess1632 says:

How the mighty have fallen. She used to be baddes in the game no competition (itty bitty piggy, anyone??) now she’s reduced her fans to no drama when she used to be all drama. I haven’t really listened to her since her first pop album came out (hated it) but when I heard about this drama w Remy Ma I expected so much more from nicki. Sigh

  6. V4Real says:

Nicki never claimed to be a battle rapper, there is no need for her to respond to that load of crap Remy put out. All Remy did was try to slut shame another woman and put her plastic surgeries on blast. Remy has had plastic surgery herself.

Nicki is not hiding before she left for Paris she was filming a music video with Future. Remy is still trying to capitalize on her 15 minutes of fame courtesy of Nicki. Remy put out another diss called “Another One”. She’s just being thirsty and starting to look stupid arguing by herself.

We all know Nicki doesn’t write her on lyrics, so what. Remy Ma didn’t write that by herself. Papoose is the one Nicki should be clapping back to.

    • Peeking in says:

💯 exactly! Why should Nicki give Remy any shine by responding to this? I’m not even a Nicki fan, but Remy was shading Nicki before, no matter what she says. Which other female rapper was she talking about before? Iggy? Come on now.
Then she now says she’s not proud of her track and is disappointed that people are praising a song that’s tearing another woman down. Bih, you made the song! Own it.

    • Bridget says:

When it was Taylor Swift or Miley Cyrus, Nikki clapped back immediately. But when it’s someone she can’t intimidate, she decides to go with silence?

      • V4Real says:

Saying how you as a Black entertainer feel about being omitted from MTV’s video of the year and blaming racism as the culprit is different.

Nicki firing get back at Taylor who assumed the tweet was about her had every right to. Taylor was the one who responded to Nicki and felt stupid when Nicki told her that she wasn’t talking about her. Then Miley felt a need to jump in by saying Nicki wasn’t very polite. These things doesn’t even compare.

      • Peeking in says:

Did she make a song about Miley or Taylor? Those instances were about race relations and the music industry, she was right to respond. Why should she respond to someone slut and body shaming her? I guess it’s outrageous when women are slut/body shamed, unless it a diss track about a female rapper.

      • Nicole says:

Well Nicki didn’t come for them and it was about something more serious.
This is Remy trying to get her shine. Just look at all the interviews she’s doing just off this one-sided beef. Even Drake and Meek didn’t do a press tour off a diss track. Heck Remy didn’t even write it clearly. The second one that she DID write was whack

      • Bridget says:

Nikki made her reputation as someone who isn’t afraid to speak up for herself. And while Taylor and Miley are both women who essentially represent young, white women as an audience, to me it felt like in both instances Nikki was punching down.

      • Celest says:

        @Bridget

When was Nicki, the big bad black rapper, punching down when she broadly spoke up about being overlooked for not being the acceptable white? When Taylor, the biggest whitest pop star in the world attacked her for it? Or when Miley did the same?

Your logic reminds of a youtube clip in which this white woman is aggressive towards a black pregnant woman in a parking lot. The black woman verbally defends herself. The cops arrive and the white woman starts crying. The cop treat the black PREGNANT woman as the aggressor and put her on the ground to cuff her. Delicate white womanhood is protected from aggressive blackness and the day is saved. Stop. It.

    • BKittyB says:

Nicki may not have claimed to be a battle rapper, but she surely did posture like one. Now that she’s had her wig, edges and kitchen snatched clean she wants to be quiet. She should have been quiet a long time ago, when her mediocre raps went slid into inane territory. Her fan base isn’t the same as it was when she first came out, and that’s ok. But if she’s going to go out into the waters, then she’d best realize there are sharks who don’t like to be provoked.

  7. Dragonlady sakura says:

Before she lost her damn mind and ruined her looks, Lil Kim was the queen B. Lil Kim will always be he baddest bitch to me.

  8. Squiggisbig says:

But she also hasn’t really stayed silent…she sniped at Trey songs on twitter, approached a number of DJs to get them not to play it, used that clip of Bey saying Nicki is the best rapper, and allegedly tried to block Remy from going on Wendy Williams/getting air time, etc. she’s basically done everything but respond on wax.

And sorry, but the stuff about her brother is not a lie. Whether or not she did pay his legal bills (my money is that she did…) she definitely paid for his wedding and there was definitely his DNA evidence linking him to a minor.

    • Onemoretime says:

This 100% she came for Trey Songz, Lil Kim, Millie & Taylor. She called the DJs to guilt them, make them pick a side. Girl just swallow your pride and ask Scaff Beezy for some help! Lol her rap creditablity is gone. Just like country music dismissed Taylor Swift, rap music has dismissed Niki. They should do a pop cd together. Lollll

      • Nanny to the Rescue ( ex-Crox) says:

Based on the sizes of their fandom that would be the most sold pop song of the decade. You’d LOL here and they’d be laughing all the way to the bank.

    • Celest says:

I am not defending her brother but I think we can all find ourselves blinded to family members wrongdoing ESPECIALLY when its such a serious allegation. Its a effed up place for any family to find themselves and believe me, people who think they know what they would do are lying through their teeth. Her brother probably has an elaborate story of how he is being set up because X, Y and Z and “sis, you KNOW me, I raised you, I would never do that believe me. Will you believe the scammers or your brother?” I’m just saying theres a cognitive dissonance that sets in with family members in this circumstance and none of us can honestly predict how we would mentally process such a thing.

      • Otaku Fairy says:

Good point. At least she hasn’t come out shaming or trashing the victim, pulling the “a few moments of action” card, blaming alcohol, or making some other BS excuse for her brother like other people who’s relatives or friends turned out to be rapists or abusers have, or dismissing the allegations as ‘tabloid fodder’. As far as her paying for him to have a defense attorney goes- it’s easy to assume that she’s the one who paid for it because she’s rich and he’s her brother. Has anyone in that family or any other source leaked who actually paid for his defense team, or is it just Remy Ma’s words in the diss track? The mom was the one who bailed him out of jail.

      • Jeesie says:

I’d also add a lot of wealthy people fund relatives they don’t like because it keeps them at arms length.

My brother is a violent sociopath. I send him some money now and then because that’s all he actually cares about, and in return he stays away from me. If I didn’t give him money, he’d try and force his way into my life, and even if I could successfully keep him away via court orders (doubtful), it would be a long drawn out hassle I don’t need, and would cause all sorts of drama within the rest of my family.

I also pay for rehab and lawyers when he needs them, because otherwise my mother would pay for it all and go hungry. If I gave her money she’d just give it to him, so unless I could live with seeing her wind up on the street, I’d be funding him one way or another. When she dies I’ll cut him off and drop the rest of my family if I have to, but for now, throwing money at him to keep him out of my face is the best I can do.

These situations can be complicated. Ideally when one family member is a monster the rest would see that and you’d all cut them out. But it rarely works like that.

  9. Jeesie says:

Meh. I know the culture, I grew up with it, I get it, but I’d be really happy to see the end of rap battles. They represent the worst aspects of rap. The violence, the misogyny, the homophobia. I’ve never, ever heard one that didn’t have a few lines that made me sick to stomach. And worst case it’s part of the escalation that leads to people dying over petty BS.

Remy Ma is a lousy rapper with no flow, and a vile, completely irredeemable human being who paralysed a woman she ‘thought’ might have stolen a couple of grand from her. And now she’s being celebrated for absolutely disgusting, misogynistic lyrics about another woman’s sex life and body. It’s gross. If Nicki wants to opt out of that, good on her.

The Meek Mill thing might have given Drake more credibility (for like a week), but in the end he just looked kind of stupid for wasting so much energy on someone so far beneath his level. Again, good on Nicki if she’s decided she’s above this crap. She’s a mainstream pop star. It’s ok if she actually acts like it instead of pretending she’s something she’s not.

Also, I’m getting kind of sick of people acting like Nicki just couldn’t get a response together. Maybe she personally couldn’t, but she could have had a dozen ghost writers sign NDA’s and start putting together something brutal 20 minutes after Shether dropped. She made a very clear choice not to go that way.

    • MC2 says:

I totally agree with all of this!

    • Otaku Fairy says:

“Remy Ma is a lousy rapper with no flow, and a vile, completely irredeemable human being who paralysed a woman she ‘thought’ might have stolen a couple of grand from her. And now she’s being celebrated for absolutely disgusting, misogynistic lyrics about another woman’s sex life and body. It’s gross. If Nicki wants to opt out of that, good on her.”

This. Which is why if I were Nicki Minaj or someone like her with any type of rap or songwriting skills whatsoever, and I was going to clapback, my gut reaction would have been to frame the diss track and its accompanying music video as more of a commentary on the kind of misogyny Remy Ma expressed in the video and its’ real world impact of it on women and girls, and then donated the money to organizations like NOW, The AHA foundation, and the Polaris Project, and then to an organization that specifically deals with gun violence like the Newtown Action Alliance (given Remy’s history) and let all that be the final response on the subject.

  10. Radley says:

That weak spin is worthy of Sean Spicer. Not buying it Nicki.

  11. tx_ava says:

she seriously thinks she’s winning? Is it even possible to be more self deluded than that??

  12. JeanGrey says:

That’s not how Hip Hop works. Bye Nicki. Come take this capital L

  13. JeanGrey says:

Also, neither of these chicks could touch the real queen. MC Lyte. There were others better than these two as well. Lauryn Hill, Brat. As much as I love Lil Kim, her lyrics had a lot of Biggie influence, but she’s killed Nicki several times over as well. Nicking stopped being hip hop a long time ago. she’s just a gimmick

    • Celest says:

I feel like Lil Kim and Foxxy Brown ruined the female rap game. Lil Kim especially had a performative over sexed gimmick that never felt empowering at all. Pep (of Salt n Pepa) was inspiring and empowering on sex and Lil Kim came along and damaged that with her act which was intended for a male audience. If I have a problem with Nicki, its that she modelled the sex side of her act on Lil Kim instead of an act like TLC. I mean Eve generally steered away from that theme but when she did discuss sex, it didnt feel like a plea for male attention.

To be honest, I’m glad Lil Kim turned her face into the indinguishable blob it now is with her surgeries and skin bleaching. It turns her into a joke and hopefully her “contribution” to the genre will be laughed at rather than emulated for years to come.

  14. scar says:

She is winning. Remy Ma is extending an olive branch now. I actually love how she played it like she won’t even bother to speak on this bitch beneath her

  15. Talie says:

The young girls and guys who give her sell-out concert tours and platinum records…they do not know who Remy Ma is. You’re not wrong to say that she has moved past that phase of her career. This was a big story in the urban media world, but outside of Wendy Williams, mainstream media did not take to this story.

  16. Classy and Sassy says:

Britney has been rising above it her whole career, and I doubt she has a single enemy in the industry. Good move, imo.

  17. Zeddy says:

Until this happened, I didn’t know who Remy whatever was. Still don’t. Don’t care. I actually dig this way of handling things because what’s more infuriating that not getting a response after you shit on someone. Annoys the christ out of me. Team Nicki FTW.

    • Otaku Fairy says:

I’d seen her before and knew of her before this, but not any of her work.

  18. Mimz, says:

Nicki should stay in the high road, and keeping herself alive, because this remy girl is dangerous and, although I recognize that shEther was a good diss, it was disgusting, anti-feminist, slut-shaming etc etc.
Remy sounds like she’ll be knifing you for nothing, and I do believe Nicki’s strategy here is, she won’t be battling with the likes of Remy or whoever. All of Remy’s follow ups and interviews are lame. And, as I said on another post, Remy couldn’t even perform the song live, two days after dropping shether, because she forgot the lyrics.
She. Is. Thirsty. and she is looking desperate as hell to become relevant. But most people see her a clown now.

  19. jerkface says:

I can’t stand her or Remy.

  20. Pandy says:

Finally got to read the SHEther lyrics yesterday and laughed my way through them. Especially the implants lines. Nicki’s response was to expose her breast wearing only a pasty at PFW. Klassy.

  21. Stephlove says:

FIRST OFF LET’S START THIS OFF WITH REST EASY IN PARADISE BIGGIE☝☝..
I’M A KEEP IT💯💯 NICKI DEF STARTED IT, TALKING ABOUT HOW REMY COULDN’T HAVE KIDS ECT..EITHER WAY NICKI GOT SLATTERED IN BOTH SONGS..TO SIT QUIET MAKES U LOOK LIKE A BITCH SCARED “WHICH OBV SHE IS”. TOOK REMY 48HRS TO COME OUT WITH SHether AN SHE WROTE IT SHE DONT HAVE A GHOST WRITER..THERE BOTH 2 DIFF STYLES AN I’M GONNA GO WITH REMY MA CAUSE SHE REAL AN KEEPS SHIT💯💯 NICKI IS FAKE FROM HER BARS TO HER ASS ECT..WANNA BE LIL KIM..CAN’T FCK WITH OLD SCHOOL..MY OPINION..

  22. Amanda DG says:

More like she’s taking a big “L” like her ex Meek did. All talk, no action. No wonder they were such a good match.

    • Celest says:

This is the juvenile part of this that I cant stand. Kids, sometimes you win, sometimes you dont. Everyone does. Never ever lift a finger solely to save face. Its never that serious and the people mockingly giving you that L have probably never scored half your wins anyway. Simply keep your eye on the bigger picture and pick your battles accordingly. Leave the macho preening to animals in heat. In the grand scheme of things, nobody with a life of their own gives a damn.

  23. Ayra. says:

Welll, whatever she was winning, she just lost because she just put out 3 songs that made me feel regretful for her. They sound like her usual garb, that’ll do well on the charts because it’s catchy and not because it’s good.
Features with Drake and Lil Wayne and had the audacity to give Remy a 72 hour time limit.

  24. Ash says:

Kaiser…. Im assuming you’re white…. and by this blog post… YOU ARE SCORED YOURSELF AN INVITE to the COOKOUT (look that up, its a wonderful phrase of endearment)

You just READ NICKI for FILTHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH …all facts

but honestly nikki is trying to handle this like taylor swift and just all types of no hun….like you suppose to be the baddest female rapper (stole her looks from rappers Foxy Brown, Lil Kim, eve, and not to mention TRINA —the baddest b*tch back in the 2000’s) and now you’re gonna remain silent and run behind wayne and drake…. she’s LITERALLY DONE.
