Emma Watson in Christopher Kane at the NY ‘Beauty’ premiere: cute or meh?

I can’t say that I’ve really enjoyed Emma Watson’s fashion during the promotional tour for Beauty and the Beast. She wore an amazing Oscar de la Renta jumpsuit to the LA premiere and I flat-out loved it, but other than that, her style has been rather meh, if not flat-out bad. She’s also been doing the sustainability challenge, meaning all of her clothes have been made from sustainable fabrics, etc. Anyway, last night was the final – ?? – premiere of the world tour. Emma and the Beauty crew did a big, splashy premiere in New York, despite the fact that the gigantic blizzard was about to come down on them.

Emma’s look at the premiere was Christopher Kane. I’m not a fan of Kane’s designs for the most part – I feel like he’s trying to do, like, cartoon-chic most of the time. This gown was surprisingly non-anime. It’s sleek, it’s simple, it’s black and all the drama is in the back. Yeah, I’m still not crazy about this. I think if she had worn it early on the promotional trail, I would have been more forgiving. But the final premiere needed something big and notable and this wasn’t it. And I really hope Emma’s cleavage doesn’t start another discussion about her feminism. For the love of God.

As for the widespread reports about how Emma was supposed to be the original star of La La Land – a role which ended up getting Emma Stone an Oscar – Watson cleared the air about the casting once again, saying:

“It’s one of these frustrating things where names get attached to projects very early on as a way to kind of build anticipation or excitement for something that’s coming before anything is really actually agreed or set in stone,” she said. When her supposed casting in La La Land was announced, she’d already committed to playing Belle in Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast. “[Beauty and the Beast] wasn’t a movie I could just sort of step into. I knew I had horse training, I knew I had dancing, I knew I had three months of singing ahead of me and I knew I had to be in London to really do that. This wasn’t a movie I could just kind of parachute into. I knew I had to do the work, and I had to be where I had to be. So, you know, scheduling conflict-wise, it just didn’t work out.”

Makes sense. And I can also see why Emma would rather do a Disney movie as opposed to a La La Land, which probably looked really strange on the page.

I’m also including photos of Ewan McGregor and Luke Evans at the premiere, because they’re both lovely.

The men in this movie are doing the Most in terms of fashion and I for one LIVE for it… I’m still “Arrested Development Mystified at George Michael’s Bland GF HER??” in regards to her in this movie… Like were Emily Rossum and the other Emily both busy? ( to be quite fair I’m just as mystified about this movie in General though)

emmy rossum would have been great but i bet they would say “too old” even though she’s only 30 and looks 22. emma watson is 26 and looks 17. i haven’t seen it – i’m sure emma watson is FINE – but you know emmy rossum would have jumped on that s*%t in a heartbeat. ewan mcgregor’s hat is making me giggle but the rest of him is making my crotch have a headache so – i can get over it.

    • Abby says:

DANG. Emmy Rossum would have been AMAZING. I’m a fan of Emma but Emmy looks like a disney princess and she sure can sing.

Having seen La La Land…it would not have gained Emma Watson an Oscar, a nomination maybe.

Emma Stone had already garnered goodwill with the academy off her role and nom in Birdman. That did help her case this year.

    • Nicole says:

Yea I agree. When the glitz fades Emma is not going to be happy that her winning role was for LLL. As much as I enjoyed the movie it was not Oscar worthy besides maybe cinematography. I didn’t think they deserved Actress or Song tbh.
This was another “well give her the oscar because she waited”

Idk, I think she looks awesome. The perfect balance of high drama glam and badassery.

That shot where she’s looking over her shoulder is breathtaking. She could model.

    • detritus says:

I really like the back of the dress.

I think it may have looked better on a taller actress? I’m not sure, the proportions look off somehow. She still looks lovely though.

    • starkiller says:

Erm…I don’t mean to be rude, but you must not have much knowledge of the modelling world if you think this person could be a model.

Emma looks she could be a Beckham kid. She resembles Brooklyn with lipstick in the above pics.

She’s a beautiful girl with a beautiful body and she looks awful. Hate the hair, the dress material, the boob area, the mesh, ugh. Her back looks nice, as does her purse and manicure, that’s about it. It’s a shame. She should fire her stylist. Seriously, this is her moment to be BEAUTY! Sheesh.

Luke Evans is handsome but his small, too short, too tight suit makes him look like a wee hobbit. I know the look he was going for and kudos for trying but I don’t think it works.

Ewan McGregor, I love him and he’s so handsome and he can pull off the hat. No, seriously, pull it off! I don’t like it. Other than that he looks great. His outfit is perfect. Swoon.

    • LadyT says:

This was her moment to be BEAUTY- right! This is just a big ol nothing special. And boring black to boot.

Kaiser! Where are photos of dan stevens?!?! He’s so beautiful!!!!

I actually really like it. I’m always in favor of a dress that doesn’t show every little bit that your mama gave you. I’m really over the ‘more skin the better’ dresses or origami cut out designs that have there barely there look. I think this is sexy in a not in your face way.. And the boys are lookin mighty fiiiine… **phew**

  8. Nicole says:

The boob area and around the hips I don’t like. For some reason it makes her look wider than normal and the cut is a little odd in both places. The back is lovely but this could’ve been better. I like the darker looks on her because its opposite of her HP days where she wore a lot of lighter looks

  9. Shelley says:

The length overwhelms her petite frame. A different color would bring out the design a bit more.

  10. OhDear says:

Hasn’t Luke Evans worn that suit already in the promo tour? This isn’t meant to be negative – suit just looks very familiar.

  11. OTHER RENEE says:

From the front the dress overwhelms her and I get bobble head vibes. It’s better from the back but who cares about that when the front visage is so off?

    • Wendy M says:

Bobble head is a good way of putting it. With that 5 finger forehead – the girl needs some damn bangs.

  12. Cel2495 says:

    Love love the dress!

  13. Rocio says:

I want to like the dress but the material looks cheap.

  14. KBeth says:

She is so lovely but this dress does nothing for her. The hair is also terrible.

  15. Anitas says:

It’s all good, but would someone honestly attach Emma Watson’s name to a project to build excitement for it? Really? No offense to Watson, but Stone is much more proven as an actress, and maybe a celebrity too.

    • Lex says:

They’d draw in a fairly wide audience interest from Watson (even if people don’t rate her acting) – everyone knows what she has been in! Not everyone would know Stone (except now as she has won an Oscar, she’ll be more widely known).
