Ian McKellan kissed Patrick Stewart on stage at the Empire Awards

Are portmanteaus appropriate for friendships? Like, really lovely, forever friends? Because I think at this point, Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen should get one. I’ve been writing combinations out like a high school cheerleader with a crush and wish to push for Stewellen. Last Sunday, Sir Pat received the Legend Award at the Empire Film Awards. So of course, Sir Ian (a previous Legend recipient) was invited to present it to him, which Sir Ian did with a delightful speech he seemingly made up on the spot and gave without notes. Furthering the conviviality of the moment, Sir Ian surprised the crowd by planting a congratulatory kiss on Sir Pat when he took the stage to accept his award. And Sir Pat loved every minute of it.

Fresh from scene-stealing performance as Charles Xavier in Logan, Sir Patrick Stewart has stolen something else – that being another cheeky snog from best pal Sir Ian McKellen.

The duo were both in attendance at the Empire Film Awards on Sunday night, where Sir Patrick was picking up the Legend Award for his outstanding contribution to cinema.
Invited to present the award was his former X-Men co-star Sir Ian McKellen, who gave a fairly nice speech about his Taylor Swift-reciting bro for life.

However, not content with just sharing the award, Sir Ian – who has previously won the award himself – decided to go in for a cheeky snog when his pal joined him on stage.

The unexpected moment was met by cheers, but we can’t say we’re that surprised as this isn’t exactly the first time the friends have got affectionate – back in 2015, the duo shared a snog at the premiere of McKellen’s movie Mr Holmes.

You can see the Mr. Holmes kiss here. What I wouldn’t give to spend an evening listening to these two give witty speeches about each other. That would be worth atoning for some of my past if I had some form of guarantee this is what awaited me Upstairs. And I am not the only one, Sir Pat said he was so enchanted with Sir Ian’s speech that he, “would have been happy just to sit there and listen to his speech without having to get up and do anything myself.”

Speaking of charming, CB has been posting about Sir Pat’s foster pup Ginger. The love affair isn’t over yet, Sir Pat posted this on Saturday:

Could you imagine becoming Ginger’s forever home? You would have the happiest girl on the block. I’d tell everyone she was royal pedigree because she was fostered by Sir Pat. In addition to Ginger, he is admirably advocating for fostering in general. On Friday (the other St. Pat’s Day), he posted this little guy:

And since we are on the subject of Logan, the only thing that makes Stewellen even better is to add a dollop of Hugh Jackman to the mix. If you have not seen this clip, do yourself a favor. It’s bewitchingly enjoyable and just gets better with each viewing:

I am sooo happy to see this guy this happy <3

  2. Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

I so ship Stewellen – love these 2. Plus I think Ian has a crush on Patrick, he did admit to fancying Hugh Jackman on Graham Norton (to his face no doubt). That was the episode that Ian told Patrick to hurry up and die. LOL

  3. pru says:

    They are international treasures!

Also, I’m still not over Logan.

  4. Georgie says:

one can really tell that all three if these gentilemen are truly grateful, lovely people. I am so glad they can just all be themselves – l imagine a time (not hard since it was not long ago) where all three would have to drastically mute their affection for each other for “appearances”. We have a long way to go still but things are changing!

  5. slowsnow says:

That kiss is so hot. This sounds terribly stupid but I love kissing (my kids know I get all happy eyed when characters kiss in films). 2 cool dudes kissing takes it to a whole other level.

  6. Sixer says:

I call them Surian and Surpat. It’s like the title of a children’s TV show or something.

I still don’t get the kiss thing though. I have come to realise that my family is far more unusual than I thought but all of us kiss each other hello, goodbye, congratulations, etc, on the lips. Regardless of gender. My dad and his brothers are the kissiest men ever. It’s impossible to imagine them meeting up without giving each other great big smackers.

    • Tris says:

So, you DO get the kiss thing!

      • Sixer says:

No, I mean I don’t get why it’s a thing you’d notice. It’s honestly taken conversations on here – and I’m in my 40s! – for me to realise that it’s more unusual than usual for men (and women) who are close to one another to kiss on the lips. I honestly thought all families did it.

    • slowsnow says:

In France people kiss all the time on the cheek and in my country men don’t kiss, they hug and are very physical with each other but no kissing. I’m ashamed to say that when we’re in France or with French friends and my man kisses his male friends (on the cheek) I get all tingly inside! Cultural tingling of course.
Glad the men in my family don’t kiss, it would have been utterly confusing for me. 😉

      • OhDear says:

I still remember how people freaked out over Giroud and Debuchy kissing during a match!

      • Sixer says:

I’m taking my dad to London to see family and go to the theatre this weekend. It’ll be the first time he’s seen many family members since Christmas. And he’ll greet every one of them, man or women, adult or child, with a cuddle and a kiss on the lips.

Like I say above, I honestly thought all families were like that. But now I realise it ain’t so! We’re the weird ones.

      • slowsnow says:

I’m picturing all of you kissing away in central London and for some reason it’s making me giggle.
As I said below, we also occasionally kiss our kids on the lips, affectionately (I was kidding above obvs) although not a typical thing in my country.
Sounds like you have a loving, free-spirited family, Sixer, how lucky.

      • Sixer says:

Well, it should be noted that we also argue like demons. Kiss hello, eat food, have drink, start a gazillion rows, kiss goodbye. That’s pretty much how it goes!

    • Jen says:

My family are the same. I’m from the UK and the comments people come out with are unreal. I think it’s sad showing affection with your family is deemed inappropriate by certain people.

      • slowsnow says:

I was kidding when I said that I’m glad that men in my family don’t kiss of course. Kisses are like affectionate words – you can say I love you in a chaste or sexual way. We’re civilised creatures and should know how to differentiate.

I’m always baffled by the level of offensiveness people find in affectionate gestures and even some sexual, personal choices.

My 11 y o son sometimes kisses me and my husband on the lips and our 16 y o daughter does too because they picked up habits from other cultures. I don’t think my family ever saw them do it, but they’d be horrified if they did.

  7. Ash says:

so …his fostering is everything. I just got a rescue pup who was foster…there is a whole host of issues as they are timid or anxious about being shipped off again….like its terrible…so the fact that Ginger is feeling at home and affectionate is amazing.

  8. Tallia says:

I don’t know who I am more jealous of, Stewart for kissing McKellan or McKellan for kissing Stewart. #allthefeels

  9. serena says:

Those two are so lovely!! I honestly ship Stewellen so much!

  10. Bethy says:

I adore these two. If you haven’t watched the Graham Norton interview, do. Sir Ian surprises Sir Pat and Hugh while they are promoting Logan. My deepest regret is not seeing them on Broadway a few years ago in Waiting on Gadot.

  11. lower-case deb says:

    so jealous of Ginger.
    so so jealous.

i’m so tempted to go and set up myself for another foster fail (4 and counting) after all the Ginger overdose… my husband’s going to kill me.

  12. saywot says:

So good to see Magneto and Professor X finally getting along… lol 🙂

  13. Cel2495 says:

Just love these two! They are so wonderful!

  14. Linda says:

This is nothing unusual. The kissed each other when sir Ian was a surprise guest on the Graham Norton show a few weeks ago. Sir Patrick said in an interview he always greets sir ian with a kiss

  15. Chocolate says:

Ginger is beyond cute. Patrick and Ian were way better than Fass and MacAvoy.

  16. Otaku Fairy says:

    I think they’re pandering. 😉
