Faith Hill on aging: ‘I’m OK with having lines. I’m almost 50’

Faith Hill is on the cover of the Spring-Summer issue of New Beauty magazine. She and Tim McGraw have been married for 21 years. There were rumors that they had problems many years ago, when Tim had a self-admitted drinking problem, but they weathered that story. They seem really well matched and happy to me now, I hope my perception is correct. Anyway, in addition to two decades of marriage, they have three daughters, Gracie, Maggie and Audrey and two successful music careers. Plus, on a superficial note, they are very attractive people who are both pushing 50. According to Faith, her secret to beauty is to just not worry about it. I realize that easy to say when you look like Faith Hill, but she makes some good points on the subject, especially about social media vs. a realistic view of aging.

When it comes to the subject of beauty, and aging in general (she’ll turn 50 this September), Faith says it’s something she tries not to give much thought to.

“I honestly don’t pay attention to it. If I did, my girls would notice and I don’t want that. It’s not a message I want them to have. The secret is being confident—with your age, with yourself. Life is so precious. We only have one; what’s the point of stressing about all of that?”

“Each decade has been different. Each day is a blessing. That’s how I want to look at it.”

One thing Faith does stress in the anti-aging game: having a realistic take on beauty, something she thinks is so important in this digital age.

“Social media can be so cruel, but we’ve always emphasized the importance of having a realistic take and a healthy view regarding beauty to our girls. They know it’s not just on the outside. It’s really important to us to teach them that beauty is on the inside. People can see your heart by the expressions on your face and by the way you carry yourself—they can see your happiness.”

Which works out perfectly, because she says Tim’s favorite look on her is “just natural.”

“He likes when I have no makeup on and crazy-curly hair. Before I put it up in my ponytail, he always tells me to wear it down because it’s his favorite.”

“But I really do swear by the fact that if you are happy and if you spread that happiness, you skin will be rosy, your smile will be bigger, your eyes will be brighter—no matter what decade you are in; no matter what stage of life you are in. It’s what I strive for. Take care of yourself; take care of your soul.”

“I’m OK with having lines. I’m almost 50, I want people to know I’ve smiled a lot.”

[From New Beauty]

I, too, am not that far away from 50 and I agree almost down the line with Faith’s thoughts. I notice the lines on my face and the grey in my hair but I don’t mind them. I know that if a guy is looking in my direction he is likely looking at someone behind me (or I have spilled my lunch down my front… again). But I really like Approaching-50 Hecate and if this is what she looks like, then I’m fine with that. 20-year-old Hecate may have had breasts where they belong and smooth skin on the back of her hands but she wasn’t as happy – given the trade off, I’ll take the lines. Plus, I’ll admit, I love crows feet on eyes because I like evidence of laughter in a person’s life.

I also agree with not getting too worked up about your appearance around your kids. I lost a lot of weight after I had my second child. I talked about weight and dieting constantly during that time. And now my children talk about weight and dieting constantly and I can’t seem to undo it. They’re like sponges with anything you say, the problem is, you don’t know how they are processing it until it’s too late.

For Faith/Tim music fans – they are recording their first album together and going on tour. The album won’t be released until later this year but their single, Speak to a Girl, debuts today and they will perform it together at the ACMAs April 2. Their Soul2Soul Tour begins in New Orleans this April and is only the second time they have ever toured together, the first being in 2007.

We just announced all of our tour openers & added more dates. That was so fun! Soul2SoulTour.com for details!

I mean, she is stunning, but looks botoxed to high heaven. So I don’t know if she doesn’t worry about it. Good for her if she doesn’t.

    • KB says:

Yeah, IIRC she’s been one of the worst over-botoxers in the past.

    • susiecue says:

She definitely is botoxed out! She’s barely been able to move her face in the last few red carpet interviews I’ve seen.

    • QQ says:

Right, I was gonna say cute quotes and all but sis your eyes are Crazy from Botoxing so.. which one thing is real??

I seriously do not like country music or either of these people in particular, but agree with her and know they have been together for so long, it’s really sweet.

her thoughts about grey hair and lines on our face remind me of the Audrey Hepburn quote: “For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.”

    • Kata says:

As lovely as that quote is, sadly, it’s not the way the world works. Not at all. Inner beauty is something rarely noticed.
The way you look plays a huge part in the way you’re treated. Especially if you’re a woman.

I’ve seen her on some red carpets where it is OBVIOUS she worries about lines on her face by the amount of botox she has stuff into it.
I’ve never been a fan of hers and have listened to country for over 20 years. She’s got a few good songs and has a beautiful voice.
There were rumors WAY back at the beginning of their union that she got knocked up as a way to trap him because he really wasn’t the family type. I think that is where my dislike for her started. I can’t remember the exact specifics of it but it was pretty obvious at the time that it was probably true.
That being said they have been together for a very long time and have seemed get through it without any major scandal and with Tim’s acting career taking off (no, he’s not a huge movie star but he’s been in some pretty good movies and can act).
I’m going to see them in May. I’m not thrilled at seeing them both because their duets make me want to puke in my boots but I think it will be fun and it’s my birthday and why not!?

I like Faith Hill, and I like her healthy outlook on aging. That’s what I call aging with dignity. I can only imagine what Kim Kardashian will do to her face when she turns 50.

    • Happy21 says:

LMAO, If she even still has a face by then! It may be falling apart in pieces. Hehe!

  5. Jess says:

I think I recently saw a candid picture of her out and about, and she definitely looked closer to her age and less frozen in those, but she was still beautiful! I agree with what she’s saying though, and I love when women age naturally and just let it happen, of course there’s nothing wrong with Botox or surgery if that’s what you choose, but for me personally I don’t mind the lines or gray hairs that have popped up the last few years. When I was younger I thought I would hate being this age(35), but it’s the opposite! I feel more confident in myself than I ever have, I’ve mentally calmed down so much since turning 30, and I’ve traded partying and sunbathing for lots of water and sunblock and rash guards, generally taking better care of myself, but I love the memories I made and the physical scars I have from that time in my life:) The media needs to chill with the airbrushing!

Hecate, I really loved all your comments on this!!! 😘

  7. Mel says:

It’s OK that she is OK with having lines being “almost 50”.
What it’s not OK is that so many people are not OK when a woman “almost 50” (or beyond) does NOT have lines (and I am not talking Botox or any procedures).
It’s like a weird taboo: not having lines – or any sort of complaints – when you are “almost 50” (or beyond), or even *mentioning* it (without boasting), is frowned upon.

  8. Grant says:

I love the two of them and have immense respect for the fact that they’ve made their marriage work for two decades. I’m not surprised there were rumors about marital troubles. What twenty-year marriage (under intense media scrutiny, no less) doesn’t have issues?
