Time Mag asks ‘Is Truth Dead?’, includes lie-filled interview with Donald Trump

The Game Plan: Strategies for Entrepreneurs

SPOILER: Truth is not dead.

This is Time Magazine’s cover this week, “Is Truth Dead?” It’s meant to be a callback to a decades-old Time cover story, “Is God Dead?” But in this case, Truth isn’t dead, even though it’s being attacked on an hourly basis. In a not-so-hilarious twist, guess who is exclusively interviewed in this issue? That’s right, our Liar In Chief, Emperor Baby Fists. Seriously, tuck in, because there is a ridiculous amount of bulls–t. Here.

Time: Do you want me to give you a quick overview [of the story]?
Trump:
Yeah, it’s a cool story. I mean it’s, the concept is right. I predicted a lot of things, Michael. Some things that came to you a little bit later. But, you know, we just rolled out a list. Sweden. I make the statement, everyone goes crazy. The next day they have a massive riot, and death, and problems. Huma [Abedin] and Anthony [Weiner], you know, what I tweeted about that whole deal, and then it turned out he had it, all of Hillary’s email on his thing. NATO, obsolete, because it doesn’t cover terrorism. They fixed that, and I said that the allies must pay. Nobody knew that they weren’t paying. I did. I figured it. Brexit, I was totally right about that. You were over there I think, when I predicted that, right, the day before. Brussels, I said, Brussels is not Brussels. I mean many other things, the election’s rigged against Bernie Sanders. We have a lot of things.

Time: But there’s other things you said that haven’t panned out. The peg for this story is the wiretapping hearing on Monday, in which [FBI Director James] Comey and [NSA Director Mike] Rogers testified about your tweets there.
Trump:
Yeah well if you’d look at, in fact I’ll give you the front page story, and just today I heard, just a little while ago, that Devin Nunes had a news conference, did you hear about this, where they have a lot of information on tapping. Did you hear about that?

Time: I have not, no.
Trump:
Now remember this. When I said wiretapping, it was in quotes. Because a wiretapping is, you know today it is different than wire tapping. It is just a good description. But wiretapping was in quotes. What I’m talking about is surveillance. And today, [House Intelligence Committee Chairman] Devin Nunes just had a news conference. Now probably got obliterated by what’s happened in London. But just had a news conference, and here it is one of those things. The other one, election, I said we are going to win, we won. And many other things. And I think this is going to be very interesting.

Time: One of my ideas here is that throughout the campaign and now as president, you have used disputed statements, this is one of them that is disputed, the claim that three million undocumented people voted in the election…
Trump:
Well I think I will be proved right about that too.

Time: The claim that Muslims celebrated on 9-11 in New Jersey…
Trump:
Well if you look at the reporter, he wrote the story in the Washington Post.

[From Time]

This is the format. This is not a parody. This is not a high-minded satire. This is what really happens when you interview Bigly Trump. “Here’s one of your lies.” “I heard that in a newspaper, it’s true.” “Here’s proof that it’s not true.” “That’s just what I heard and I will be vindicated.” “No, really, it’s not true. You’re sitting there, lying to the American people.” “….Hillary Clinton…”

What else? He says that he’s “forming a committee” to look into those three million illegal votes that Hillary Clinton got. When asked about lying, he goes on and on about his electoral college votes. If someone agrees with him, then that person is “right.” If someone disagrees with him, that person is “fake news.” He goes on and on about Devin Nunes’ press conference, which apparently happened just minutes before Time interviewed Trump. He’s literally still justifying his tweets about Obama wiretapping him. This is how he spends his time.

IIRC, approximately two weeks before the vote, he didn’t have a clue what Brexit was. Sort of his “What’s Aleppo?” moment. What a mfking, lying sh1thead. I loathe him.

    • Esmom says:

I know, I thought the same thing. I loathe him too.

      • Mary mary says:

Found a passage that describes this along with the outcome.

“The Lord hates a proud look, a lying tongue and hands that shed innocent blood,a heart that devises wicked imagination, a false witness that speaks lies and he that sows discord among others.”

        Description sound familiar?

The outcome/prediction of this: “Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.”

        Peace out.

    • Lucy says:

Am I a complete idiot or was that incredibly hard to follow? I had to re-read that snippet several times because I kept going back to see what the original question was and then reading the answer to try to make sense of it….I have no idea how journalists can even keep up with him, 3 questions and my brain is dizzy from the lack of nuance. Does this lunatic have a grade 3 education? Or is his plan to simply confuse people with word vomit as a distraction for how crazy and stupid he is?

      • Kristen820 says:

The answer to both questions is “yes”.

      • Angela82 says:

@Lucy: Nope definitely not just you. He puts Palin’s word salads to shame. Not a single coherent thought was said. 🙁 I don’t get how a President, or really anyone, can possibly be this stupid.

      • Beth says:

You’re definitely not an idiot. I had to read it a few times and I still didn’t completely understand it. When Trump answers questions in interviews, has a habit of not making sense. He usually changes the subject and rambles about something totally different

      • Emma33 says:

When he’s speaking, what he says isounds vaguely comprehensible. But written? It’s like word salad to the power of 50,000.

      • Raina says:

No, he’s not doing it on purpose; This idiot is genuinely incoherent and inarticulate. He reminds me of an elderly senile patient who keeps saying everyone is stealing from him. He will be impeached.

  2. Who says says:

Studies show that our brains are particularly ill-equipped to deal with lies when they come not singly but in a constant stream, Trump, we know, lies constantly, about all sorts of matters. When we ,the public ,are overwhelmed with false, or potentially false, statements, our brains pretty quickly become so overworked that we stop trying to sift through everything. It’s called cognitive load and our limited cognitive resources are overburdened. It doesn’t matter how implausible the statements are; throw out enough of them, and people will inevitably absorb some. Eventually, without quite realizing it, our brains just give up trying to figure out what is true.

    • detritus says:

      this is interesting.
most people don’t code information as likely right, likely wrong or whatever, either.
It just becomes information, instead of retaining a level of credibility associated with each idea or the source.
So add that in to the increased cognitive load, and people will absorb some of this nonsense as ‘the truth’.

      • Who says says:

Correct ,so therefore it is really important to make this conscious effort to not go into cognitive load and remind yourself what is truth and what is fiction.

  3. Elysium1973 says:

I’m ready for President Pu**y Grabber to get impeached and for his minions of the devil (Bannon, Kurtcher, Miller, Mitch “the turtle” McConell, the Nazi “Dr” SEBASTIAN v. GORKA, and thirsty tryin’ Ryan) to go to prison. Oh, and don’t forget Kelly “con job”. They need to get gone. ASAP.

  4. Lolo86lf says:

Truth is now a very rare commodity given to the masses in very small amounts. In Trump’s administration; truth is non existent. He thrives on lies, deceit and fallacies.

  5. Esmom says:

If this isn’t evidence that truth is dead, I don’t know what is. Or maybe it’s not dead but it’s in a pretty deep coma, showing little signs of waking up anytime soon.

    • Megan says:

Trump cannot distinguish “facts” from “truth.” Yes, truth can be manipulated, but eventually the facts are going to bite him in the ass.

      • Radley says:

There’s literally no reasoning with him. I wonder if we’ll need the military to physically remove him from the white house? Or will he go on a twitter rampage and accuse half of America, and all of Canada, Mexico, the UK, Germany, France, Sweden and Australia in engaging in a far flung conspiracy against his tremendous plans to make America great again?

    • cindy says:

@Radley- this what I have been wondering! I have nightmares that if he is impeached or charged with treason he will run for the “football”/red button.

      • Mary mary says:

Codes could be changed on him 🙂 and his fat little fingers wouldn’t be able to push any buttons correctly.

  6. cindy says:

I really believe that if trump is not impeached, our country may never be the same. He has already done so much damage, and I know pence et al., are horrible, but trump is a true despot. I don’t believe he’s insane, in the legal sense of the word, but his personality is so destructive and twisted, he will take an entire country down just to feed his fragile ego.

    • Megan says:

@Cindy I think he has already done irreparable damage by sowing the seeds of hate, distrust, and divisiveness in ways we have not seen since the civil rights era. His course rhetoric and win-at-all-costs approach to everything has driven comprise and common ground to extinction in America.

The sooner he goes, the better, but he will leave a lasting legacy of ugliness.

  7. Rachel says:

You know what guys, I’m tired. I am so damn tired. When do we as the American people say enough is enough! This is bullsh*t! A segment of the population has. We scream it every day until we’re hoarse. No rational person can listen to this man, read his interviews, and think he belongs in this position. And yet I see interviews with Trump supporters that really make me believe EVERYONE should have to take a civics exam before they’re allowed to vote.

How much more do you need congressional Repubs?! Instead of circling the wagons, how about you do your damn jobs and get this man out of office?? But then I ask myself if the alternative is any better, and it just makes me so weary.

Guess I just needed to vent. It always makes me feel a little better to come on here and see like-minded people. To know you’re there to pick up the slack if I need to take a mental health day…

    • Betsy says:

How many readers will this page get? I have no idea, but it’s more than you and me. Everyone call their two senators, and your representative today and tell them you want this investigated, as deep as it goes (and it pretty plainly extends deep into the GOP bench). Tell them you want truth to matter. Tell them a hostile takeover by Russia is unwelcome. Find yours here: https://www.usa.gov/elected-officials

    • Kitten says:

Did you see the interviews at the Trump rally in Tennessee? O_O

I’m past the point of feeling bad for these people. They are dangerous, straight-up dangerous to democracy because they continue to enable Trump and his incessant lies.

  8. SusanneToo says:

It’s heartening to learn that at least one type of business has flourished under trump. Art supply stores are selling out of poster board to make protest signs.😊😊😊✊🏻✊🏻✊🏻

  9. manamoo says:

His sentences make no sense whatsoever. I get a headache trying to read them.

  10. Radley says:

I saw an interview with the author of the article on CNN this morning. And Trump is lowkey trying to claim he’s a prophet?? Like he can legit predict things? The dude is nuts and dangerous and we’ve gotta stop pretending he’s not. There’s no way to overstate my level of concern at this point. It’s off the charts.

  11. KJA says:

I’m exhausted by all of this, and it’s probably nowhere near how the lovely American people on this site feel. I’m close to turning off news alerts. I want to be informed, I want to stay on top of things but I’m just tired.

  12. VegasSchmegas says:

After he gets impeached, he will have a “tremendous” career with Dionne Warwick’s Psychic Friends Hotline.

  13. BJ says:

OMG I thought this was a satire piece like they do in The Onion.Knowing that this is real makes me wants to cry…

  14. Jenns says:

I don’t know how anyone with a rational brain can look and this and think that this man is fit to run the United States.

    • doofus says:

at this point, the only folks who do are those who value party over country/truth/justice/etc because they have an irrational hatred of the Dem party.

      either that or they’re bigots.

      oh, or supremely stupid/uninformed/misinformed/willfully ignorant.

  15. Radley says:

I wonder if Devin Nunes actually wants the investigation taken away from the House Intelligence committee? I mean what he did was so flagrant, you have to wonder if there’s an ulterior motive. Also, Bigly Smalls and his puppetmasters are extremely paranoid and vengeful. Republicans that actually see the writing on the wall will initially have to handle it carefully lest the white house goons throw them under the bus. Just something I’m contemplating. That all said, I still think Nunes’ major concern is me, myself and I.

    • doofus says:

I think he wants a deal. I think, once the dominoes start to fall, there’s going to be a mad rush among this admin to see who can “turn state’s” first and get a deal to rat on the rest of them.

    • Lightpurple says:

Nunes actually seems to think he can do whatever he wants and nothing can touch him because he bought into Ryan’s “mandate” claim. His congressional website is pure right-wing propaganda instead of offering actual services to his constituents

  16. Insomniac says:

If you need a break from this walking crap factory, do yourself a favor and google “Joe Biden puppy.” (I tried posting a link, but it didn’t go through.)

    • Louisa says:

I saw this last night and almost cried with joy. For just a moment all was right with the world again.

  17. Shambles says:

He cannot even string together a coherent stream of thought. He needs to practice for his impeachment trial.

  18. lizzie says:

guys….HE IS INSANE. MENTALLY ILL. NEEDS LABOTOMY AND SHOCK THERAPY

  19. Beth says:

This guy is nuts. Never makes sense. Now that the wiretapping was proven to be a crock of bs, is he saying he actually didn’t specifically mean he was wiretapped

    • Lightpurple says:

Well, as Kellyanne explained, Obama was listening in through the microwave

      • Beth says:

At first I thought Kellyann was joking about that. No way could she be so stupid! I loved reading peoples tweets and comments about the spying microwave. Hilarious

  20. robyn says:

I’m guessing Nunes was unknowingly set up by Trump who already knew what Nunes would reveal. A distraction from the Manafort/Russia issue and a way to muddy the waters about his Obama wiretapping lie.

Lies are Trump’s game and its impossible to trap someone who is mercurial about the truth, especially when they have no shame and can twist a lie into a pretzel and then force you to eat it.

  21. Hazel says:

He cannot speak in a complete sentence! That’s the influence of twitter, my friends. The lying, though, is all him.

  22. SusanneToo says:

JFC!! I think that’s the correct reaction to this – “Oklahoma Republican Says God Can Use Rape And Incest To ‘Bring Beauty From Ashes”
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/oklahoma-abortion-bill-god-rape-incest_us_58d33663e4b0b22b0d19cb53?

    • Llamas says:

OK is insane. I live here and although I’m a Repub I will say that this conservative govt is overbearing with social issues. They don’t practice less govt. I hate it so much.

On another note: is trump okay? Like actually. I feel as though he is truly mentally ill. I’m not a psychologist yet but I keep getting the feeling that he’s having psychosis/dementia. Word salads, weird claims etc.

      • Angela82 says:

Psych major working at a mental health agency. Yes El Cheeto is certifiable.

And anyone who opposes abortion in cases of rape, incest and medical crises can go f*ck themselves. I am not a kids person, hence I am on long term birth control. If I didn’t need to take it and I was raped and got pregnant I would not be responsible for carrying something I never wanted much less it being the product of a violation of my rights. If I got pregnant through rape I would be suicidal having that baby. There is no blessing in it for me, especially since I am an atheist who doesn’t give a crap what God thinks of me. Sorry a$$hole Republican congressman.

      • Kitten says:

        “is trump okay?”

The answer is always “no”, Llamas!

I don’t know if he in mentally unwell or not. This interview was all over the place but to be fair, “Trumpanese” always comes across as bizarre in print. I suspect that he might sound slightly less insane if we were listening to him and not reading his words.
(please note that I said “slightly”!)

      • Beth says:

@Angela82, that is exactly what I always say to anyone I know who opposes abortion. If I was raped, I would have the abortion right away. I can’t imagine having no choice but to be pregnant and give birth as a result of a cruel and violent crime like rape. When pro life people talk about how abortion is the murder of a baby being ripped from the womb, they don’t want to understand. If I was going to die from the pregnancy or we knew the baby wouldn’t survive past birth, it would be upsetting, but I would have an abortion. I’m also an atheist so I don’t believe God would hate me and send me to hell.

      • Angela82 says:

@Beth, the past few years one of my good friends was trying to have a baby. For whatever reason, the first three pregnancies had genetic abnormalities so severe they said she would likely miscarry late (her body seemed to not miscarry early 🙁 ) or the baby would die soon after birth. This was not a case of down syndrome or intellectual disabilities. The babies would not SURVIVE and her life would be in great DANGER. Fortunately they were able to get genetic testing done to make sure it wasn’t one of them (she was willing to use other eggs/sperm if that was the case), and it wasn’t, apparently it was a freak thing. However, she was so upset at the idea of having to have another potential abortion that they ended up at a fertility place in MD. They did have a healthy baby boy via in vitro and testing the embryo early on in the process. We are also lucky and here in MD insurance has to cover 80% of fertility treatments.

My point is not everyone seeks abortion b/c they are a “whore”. Lots of people who want kids have to have them to save their life or to spare the poor fetus/baby an inhumane existence IMHO. And then you have rape. How anyone can force a woman to have her attackers baby is sick and pathological IMO. I get you have the Jaycee Duggard’s who end up accepting them and loving them (lets face it in her case she had no choice at the time), but its a screwed up situation nonetheless.

      • Beth says:

@Angela82 I’m so sorry for your friends situation! These are the things pro life people don’t think about. When people are called “whores who should’ve been more careful” when they decided to have an abortion, that’s awful because they don’t know why she’s having it done. None of their business and we should have the right to choose what to do

      • Imqrious2 says:

Kitten, the words are the same, the few times I unmuted the sound on the news with him on: rambling, incoherent half sentences without any regard for what was asked. He literally just chooses a “fork in the road” every few words, and keeps ambling. It’s beyond disturbing.

  23. S says:

This transcript made my head spin. These are the rantings of a mad man. A delusional, man-baby. I’m surprised he didn’t add “Na, Na, Na, Boo, Boo” at the end of his batcrap crazy, “I guess, I can’t be doing so badly, because I’m president, and you’re not,” sign off.

I mean, seriously, we have a president whose verbal agility tops out as “I know you are, but what am I,” and who can’t separate fact from fiction, and believes ONLY info that spins him in a positive light. A so-called leader who openly admits to believing he doesn’t need knowledge or research to make good decisions.

    WTF fellow Americans?!? WTF?

  24. Snowflake says:

Ladies, in Florida, here is the number for our Republican representative John Rutherford 202_225_2501. I just called and a person picked up right away. I left a message please oppose the American Health Care Act, you take care of us, we will take care of you at re election time.

  25. holly hobby says:

STFU Orangino! He makes Lyin Palin sound like a Rhodes Scholar.

  26. Josefina says:

One thing that really worries me about the Trump effect is the ammount of people I have seen using Trump’s debating style. I feel like in the past months discussing politics online has gotten particularly frustrating, and it’s not even because of the tense political climate. It’s because it is completely pointless. This people don’t respond to facts and logic, they have chosen the truth they want to live in and they won’t let go off it. In their heads, the FBI is investigating Trump because of liberal pressure by the left-wing dominated media. You can explain to them with pears and apples why that doesn’t make sense, but they won’t listen. And they’ll have the nerve to say YOU are the one who is being brainwashed. The fact that after all that has happened, Trump’s approval rating is somewhere around 40% is extremely worrying. The presidents we’ve lately had here did a lot less in 4 years than Trump did in 3 months, and both of them left with an approval below 20%. The bigger problem with these people isn’t that they are ignorant and bigoted, but that they are 100% resistant to change. Their healthcare will be taken away, and when they are sick on their dying beds, they will use their last breaths to blame Obama/Hillary/Mexico/Leftist Media for it.

This isn’t exactly new. As someone who regularly posts in forums like this for all sorts of topics, I’m familiar with trolls. But these aren’t trolls. These aren’t just sexually frustrated 15 year old boys. You open their FB accounts and you see a woman in her late 40’s, with children. A woman you can see buying veggies in the supermarket. Sitting next to you on the bus. Waiting on the same voting line as you. I felt people like that used to avoid political discussions before, but not anymore. Politics are no longer for smart people. You’re free to think whatever you want. Your factually wrong and logically incoherent opinion is just as valid as any else.

    • SusanneToo says:

Sometimes, when I’m on twitter and I read a really nasty anti-Obama/Hillary comment or a buttlicking trump comment, I check their TL and they almost invariably list CHRISTIAN as one of their attributes. Yeah, sure.

    • Kitten says:

      YES.
      Everything you said.
It’s such an exercise in futility when there’s no acknowledgement of even basic facts. I’ve posed this question before but how do you approach a conversation with someone when you don’t at the very least have the same understanding of truth/reality? In order to have a productive political conversation, there has to be a starting point, a place of common agreement from which to branch out into differing viewpoints. If you don’t have that, there’s nowhere to go.

Excellent comment and thanks for so perfectly articulating the frustrating and fruitless experience of interacting with a Trumpster.

    • Beth says:

Trump supporters are so frustrating to talk to. They refuse to see the truth, listen to facts, or admit that they aren’t happy with the awful way things are going. This is absolutely the only place I go and not be called a snowflake or libtard. Hopefully these people will come to their senses before everything is beyond fixable
